Fashion Worldbuilding in FMA:b

From a historical fashion standpoint, the fashion in FMA:b (and the manga) is all over the place, but since the 1914/1915 setting of Amestris is not actually linked to the real historical time period there is no need to apply rigid fashion rules to the worldbuilding. And yet, I think it is very interesting to explain the fashion of Amestris through a Watsonian lens.

And what better place to start with than the very a-historical skin-tight, skin-showing clothing of our teenage characters?

Winry is always dressed practically and job oriented (coveralls, gloves, something to tie her hair back with) and yet she’s also dressed like a typical modern teenager. Crop tops and short skirts are the norm for when Winry is doing everyday stuff outside of her workshop or extreme territories. She is by far not the only character that dresses like this - we see both Matel and Paninya in similarly tight and form-fitting outfits.

And the world around them doesn’t react to this excess of skin with disgust or outrage - their way of clothing seems to be the general norm, or at least pretty widespread and accepted. But if we look closer, it seems that this is only a societal norm for young people.

Most of the older women we meet, are dressed rather conservatively, with dresses and long skirts being the norm. Hair is most often drawn in a bun on older female characters, and the general dress shape seems to be late 19th century inspired.

In this crowd scene for example, we can see a handful of young women wearing pants with their hair open, while the majority of the women depicted seem to be wearing skirts, dresses, and aprons as befitting a working women, while others seems to have scarves wrapped around their shoulders as if out and about on a stroll through town.

Which would make sense. This would divide the expected “proper” way of dressing along the axis of age (and/or marital status), with the cut-off being somewhere in the mid- to late twenties. Characters like Riza Hawkeye, Matel, and Sheska play into this, as they are all more conservatively dressed as Winry, but do not yet follow stricter fashion rules as they seem to be common in older demographics.

In this scene Riza is wearing a skirt that covers her knees and a jacket that covers her neck and the entirety of her arms. We later see her dressed in different civilian clothes as well, with a white blouse, a pink cardigan, and comfortable loose pants. As such she is in a transitional phase of fashion, between the more loose and short styles of the youth and the more traditional cuts of the older generation.

Shezka is much the same, her blouse and typical turtleneck much more “grown up” than the clothes Winry and her age-mates wear, and yet the rest of her clothes have not yet reached the same level of “age”. Both of these characters are also unmarried, which could be another factor in the way they dress - historically speaking, expectations on dress were different between single women and those that were married, so there is a distinct possibility of the same being the case in the world of FMA.

Which brings us to another very interesting axis of analysis: how do jobs and fashion interact in Fullmetal Alchemist?

The way I see it Amestris is a country on the verge of changing. We see a noteworthy amount of female soldiers, but only one female General - so much so, that Sloth is ordered to kill “the” female General, because Olivier Mira Armstrong is the only woman in the upper brass. The other female soldiers we meet all have ranks up to First Lieutenant, but nothing above. There are no female State Alchemists. Most of the other professionals we meet are men.

It makes sense for Olivier to be the first female general based on her family history and the fact that she was probably an outstanding soldier - but it also highlights that the military as a structure has probably only allowed female soldiers for up to 30 to 40 years by the time we meet the Elrics and their world. And I see much of Amestris through that lens - most gender-based laws have probably been repelled by now, but the society at large still remembers a much more divided structure. This is reflected in the fashion, of course.

In a country that has only recently changed its views on which professional fields should be open to all genders, the divide between the fashion rules for those that remember more rigid structures and those that grew up without certain assumptions is growing. Societal standards are slow to change, but they do reflect the opinions of the general public - or at least the rules and traditions people tend to cling to. 

Let’s take Gracia for example. While the hemline in general seems to be rising in all age demographics (except the elderly, while staying relatively conservative in older demographics and - hypothetically - married women) Gracia dresses less form-fitting than other women in her age range (Riza Hawkeye, Rebecca Catalina). She is generally dressed more “proper”, even later on when we see her wearing skirts that end above the knee. What I really find interesting though is the comparison to her younger self - roughly eight years younger, as this is a picture from the end of the Ishval War. Even though she is probably about twenty to twenty-three in this picture, she is dressed a lot more conservative than all the other female characters we have met in that age range so far. This can have multiple reasons. Maybe Gracia is from a more conservative, rich family that favors more traditional style of dress - or we can see the rabid change in society in just eight years.

Again, Amestris as a society in the middle of extreme social change.

We can even see it in the military uniforms. Female soldiers in active duty wear the same clothes as their male counterparts.

But what we see multiple times is other female officers employed at Central Command (or other military headquarters) wearing a different uniform - with a much shorter skirt (tho a longer skirt option seems to be available, as we also see female soldiers wearing skirts that cover the knees).

This could imply two things: a) the longer skirts were the normal uniform for female employees of the military not cleared for active duty, and only recently shorter skirts became a part of the uniform as a reaction to the changing fashion landscape or b) the shorter skirts existed for longer as some sort of sexist tool of the upper brass to demean their female employees.

For the sake of our current worldbuilding, let’s go with Option A).

Again, the general hemline seems to be rising - in a way, it wouldn’t even be historically unheard off. In the 1920s the female silhouette changed so much in young, city-dwelling circles that you might even see the occasional knee peak out from under a skirt - Amestris could be experiencing a similar change in fashionable dress.

There is one other thing I want to mention while I’m at it: the influences of other cultures on Amestrian culture and fashion.

Amestris is an imperial power, and while that means that it has a very strong national identity on the one hand, we can also see how it has adapted other cultural influences in its daily life. While the wearing of traditional Ishvalen clothing is probably demonized and a sure way to get othered, influenced from other nations Amestris is war-ing with can be found.

Xing-style clothing seems to be pretty common, and if anything it seems to be a sign of status to be able to afford clothes from Xing.

We see Mrs. Bradley were Xing-style clothing multiple times throughout the show, and it always seems to be something a lady of good standing can do without consequences. This implies a certain level of cultural trade and exchange between the two countries, especially once you consider that Xingese features seem to be common enough in Amestris that Ling always has to mention his status as a foreigner since his appearance alone would not give it away.

(And the fact that all Lan Fan and Fu had to do to go undercover was exchange their Xingese dress for classical Amestrian clothing and suddenly they could disappear in a crowd without a problem)

And this bit of decor in General Grumman’s office? This also implies some sort of cultural influences from Drachma.

There is also the fact that class probably does play a role in the way people dress, with people from Rush Valley, a certified weird town full of weird people, dressing more wild, with less need for social conventions in a place like that. And people from the countryside favoring practicality over fashion, and much of the women we see there wearing loose dresses and aprons, which makes sense. At the same time, what little we see of the Armstrong family, they seem to favor a more conservative style of dress, even at a younger age.

Which makes sense - fashion is influenced by a lot of different factors, class, age, gender, gender representation, work and cultural influences all making a difference.

And just as an aside - while this post mostly discusses women’s fashion in FMA:b, I think it applies to men’s fashion as well. At least to a certain degree. While most men are much more uniformly dressed in “old-timey” clothing, the current shift seems to be happening when it comes to wearing hats.

And I also think teenage boys are less tied to the fashion expectations of their time - Edward for example dresses very modernly and weird. BUT and - this is very interesting - his sense of fashion is constantly considered as outside of the norm. Part of his Growing-Up Arc is starting to wear the clothes society expects him to wear... which means that while women’s fashion is rapidly changing, men’s fashion is still rather strict in comparison, with breaking of the rules being perceived as socially “punishable” in comparison.

okay yknow what since i got both of these asks I'm gonna make two posts: I'm gonna answer these asks with specific photo references and talk about my inspo for the fashion, and then I'm gonna make another post where I list out the actual in universe fashion trends I have written down for the world of under the hanging rose. how's that sound?

okay so first off, the inspiration for most of the fashion in the rose universe is from a few time periods of royal european history. I'm a big fashion history girlie so this might not make sense to most people who aren't into fashion history, but I kind of imagine the royal court fashion in Arestes (the country under the hanging rose takes place in) for women to be a mix of the tudor era and victorian era

specifically, the bell shaped silhouette and long, tight sleeves of the tudor era, but with the off the shoulder necklines of the victorian era. sometimes the square necklines of the tudor era are also worn, but in Arestes that's considered recently out of style as the off the shoulder neckline styles become the latest fashion. hair-wise I took a lot of inspiration from both renaissance era hair and a bit of the late middle ages, and also just game of thrones/house of the dragon because the costume design in those shows is amazing. intricately braided updos are standard for noble women in the capital city, and there's always some kind of veil/hair covering pinned to the updo even if it's not covering the hair completely.

the mens fashion is a bit less historically-based, but I guess if I had to make comparisons i'd say loosely late 18th century to early 19th century?? but with a few elements thrown in from the renaissance era and the middle ages. for the most part though a lot of my inspo for the mens fashion comes from game of thrones and house of the dragon. button-up coats and tunics with dark pants make up the standard structure of most mens court wear, with tunics going from anywhere to mid thigh all the way down to calf-length. the references I post under the read more will help it make more sense, but I'll also go more into detail in the actual fashion masterpost i'll make

okay photo references for niki, wilbur, and phil's dinner outfits (bc those are the only ones i have good references for) in chapter 1 of under the hanging rose below the cut!

alright so first off since she got asked about directly, niki.

I don't have a singular photo reference for her dress because it's kind of a mix of several images I saw.

this was the main inspo for the neckline/shape of the dress, although I'd say the waistline is a bit lower and there's less gathering in the skirt.

the color is definitely closer to this painting of a tudor era woman I saw

while the veil in her hair is pinned up like this

except the veil isn't black, it's a sheer white/gold color

also regarding the earrings wilbur mentions niki wearing, I have a full list of her piercings/the jewelry in them here

then for wilbur one of my main reference pics is this

now this high-collared coat is kind of his basic/standard look for at least this part of the story, except his coat is dark blue and decorated with lighter blue embroidery as opposed to the dark orange/lighter orange combo you see in the pic. also, wilbur's not royalty, so he's not wearing that huge gold necklace thing at all (and obviously he's not wearing a crown). his everyday tunic is a similar structure to that coat, it's just less fancy.

now wilbur's ferronniere is most similar to this

with the gold chain being pinned into his hair and the pendant resting in the center of his forehead

and also as mentioned in the chapter wilbur isn't as huge on piercings as others are, so he has far fewer piercings than niki does

like wilbur, phil's dinner outfit is pretty much the same as his everyday wear, just a bit fancier.

phil's tunic is a light blue color, with the cloak over his shoulders being a soft grey color. the metal clasps are made of a pair of wings, and the main difference between his dinner outfit and his every day wear is that his dinner tunic is covered in embroidery whereas his everyday one is more simple. I sadly don't have a reference for phil's Consil pendant necklace, just know it's there.

although it wraps straight around his forehead instead of sitting on top of his head like this one does in the pic. the gems are ones of darker shades too

and of course phil's piercings bc I decided ear piercings are extremely popular in Arestes mostly for my own enjoyment

YIPPEE!!

The reenactment I went to over the weekend (The Grand Encampment) was so fun! :DDD

Unfortunately, since it was the first annual occurrence of this event, it was a bit small for a timeline event! There were other events that weekend for many other groups, so groups were scattered around southern California. Only Union soldiers (so the artillery group acted as the sole Confederates) and very few Rev War groups. Hopefully it will be better next year since the planning will be better and more organized!

I went in my colonial outfit with my regiment, the Royal Marines :). I did get sunburnt though sdoufbisdubfs. It was pretty hot. and everyone was tired XD! Both days I went in my colonial dress!

On the first day in the morning I mainly just got settled and explored our era’s camp a bit. We had two tented taverns set up and our regimental tents. We talked to one of the tavern keepers and he told us about all his antique furniture in the tavern! The chair to the right (my left) above is from the era! I missed the pass and review, though, which is basically an introduction to every participating group. Our battle was first, but since we had such a small group, it was an extremely small skirmish! I was watching as a camp follower and spoke with some time travelers. General Howe personally commanded our troops and the rebels were dispersed!

Right after, there were two air demonstrations. First, the Red Baron flew by and landed for us!

Second, the “D-Day Doll” took off and skydivers landed on the green!

An American WWII plane also flew!

Next, there was a WWI demonstration! Trenches were dug for the reenactors! This was a western front demonstration, so we had British (and Canadian) and German soldiers. One French soldier was there, too! However, the French soldier’s regiment didn’t come and he was alone ;-;. The trench battle had the British and Canadians crossed no man’s land to the German trenches that they had gassed. Only one of the Allies and I think 1 or 2 of the Central Powers survived. Great accuracy on their part!

After the battle, we met a WWI Marines reenactor who had so many original artifacts! There were original helmets, rifles, spades, etc. One of them was an original record player with original WWI records including “Over There” and “It’s a Long Way to Tipperary”! I can post them in a repost!

Next was a WWII battle based on a battle in the Pacific Islands. So, the battle was between the U.S. and Imperial Japan. The battle was fought in the brush so we could see the Marines, but Imperial Japan hid in the brush. In the end, there were no U.S. survivors. A sandbag actually caught on fire near the brush and some WWI soldiers ran to put it out thankfully odushfcsidhf. Here is a photo before the battle!

More WWII! There was a tank! An M4 Sherman used by the U.S.! I got to look inside the turret. The tank gunner showed us the cranks to turn the turret and gun.

Next was a fashion show through different eras and a meeting of reenactors who are historical figures! I went to the Civil War camp and had a lot of fun talking to them. All so nice :3. That evening there was a swing dance with a live band! (The instructors got sick but there were so many great dancers, anyway). It was amazing :D! I did do some dance but not very good XD. There were many WWII reenactors there :).

On day two, I came a bit later. For our battle, we had more British soldiers! I met a few other ladies who are part of the Britannic Society and watched the battle with them. Next, we went to the WWII camp to talk to the reenactors. Many of the ladies were portraying women’s divisions during the war! I went back to the AmRev era with my group. We practiced drilling. It’s so much easier to do it in person than reading! After drills, I went to the tavern and we had snacks that were cooked over the fire! I was with the Britannic society members, the tavern owners, a few soldiers and George Washington. It was so much fun :D!

After, I went back to drilling but assumed a soldier impression! My commander loaned me his gear so it was all very big on me XD! Here we are, the only three Royal Marines over the weekend!

We practiced marching and other commands. No firing since it was my first time. The musket was pretty heavy and my arms were tired after!

Overall, it was a super fun event! I can’t wait to go to more!

Bonus! There was an anime convention across from our hotel and the cosplays were so cool!

we're spanning about 1350-1520, but MOST people are sitting comfortably in the middle to late 1400s, with some purposeful exceptions*. everyone is wearing something different, there's a lot of emphasis on crossover between countries and routes of trade that literally only make sense in a fantasy setting.

(*for example, people make fun of the mage for wearing a houppelande, because it's definitely out of fashion by 1450 and i thought it would be a fun little parallel to draw for his robin-hood costume.)

WITH ALL OF THAT CONTEXT

i made agatha's parents merchants (i thought it was a neat little nod to the traveling christmas party thing from the books, and it drew them a little bit closer to the inciting incident) which means she's simultaneously able to get the absolute cutting edge of fashion for the era if she wants, and under the scrutiny of her parents (who are both in a public-facing and extremely social-currency-based profession)

there's kind of a background argument in one of the earlier chapters between her and penny about it: agatha's in trouble with her mother for wearing too many slashes in her sleeves, penny thinks slashed sleeves and petticoats are superficial and impractical (the new modern hoopskirt is where it's at, if you wear skirts!), agatha scoffs because why in the world would she have a saffron-dyed, embroidered shift if she wasn't going to SHOW IT TO PEOPLE???

the thing about slashed/paned sleeves, in general, is that they were considered kind of uncouth at the time. slutty, one might argue! they were designed specifically to reveal small sections of your shirt or chemise, and if you're showing off your expensive undergarments too much people might talk.

it would have been considered very fashionable for agatha to have a few slits in her sleeves-

(sometimes women wore them in their bodices, but agatha wears a fancy schmancy stomacher in this so that's not relevant.)

-but too many of them in a single garment would start to suggest things about her character, in the attitude of the era. given that her parents have hangups about her behavior and propriety, it's supposed to have kind of a "YOUNG LADY YOU ARE NOT GOING OUT IN THAT" vibe. it's the kind of thing people were banned from entering churches for.

her mother is irritated because even if it's fashionable, it's not 1500s classy fashionable, and i'm hoping it kind of carries the same narrative weight as them finding her shoplifting habit very common and disappointing, but not actually punishing her for it because their disapproval and her perceived failure to conform are punishment enough. (purple varnish!)

TL;DR-

compared to the 21st-century idea of modesty agatha's outfit as i envision it would be considered downright matronly, but for the time period?

it's basically the equivalent of wearing an open white button-down shirt to show off a cute (and grotesquely expensive) designer bralette.

Deathrock in particular is interesting because it was basically the “American version” of goth music and subculture for a long time and is widely called “too punk for goth and too goth for punk”. Darkwave and industrial are products of the scene getting its start in the early 80s when synthesizers became commercially available. Whether or not industrial in particular counts as “goth” or not is one of the quickest ways to start a fight among goths and also because nobody seems to be able to agree on what’s “real” industrial music. Metal isn’t widely considered to be goth music proper but I have yet to meet a goth who doesn’t like at least a little bit of metal. Historically that crossover didn’t really happen until metal started getting more creative as well (after all, the 80s were the golden age of fratty hair metal and toxic masculinity and neither of those things mesh well with goth style and sensibilities). 

Now that I’m done rambling about the early history of the goth scene, here’s some short answers to the inevitable goth faqs:

Isn’t goth also about aesthetic and fashion?

Yes, but they can’t be fully separated from the music and community. The music generally inspires the fashion and we really like copying the outfits, hair, and makeup of musicians. Goths don’t own in dressing in all black and there’s plenty of goths out there who don’t “dress like it” (including myself and MANY goth and post-punk musicians).

Are you all satanists/pagans/witches? Are you all kinky?

More often than the average person but it’s more a consequence of being in a counterculture community than anything else. Goth and alternative women aren’t your fetish or your future “big titty goth gf”. We just like a certain style of music and just happen to dress weirdly sometimes.

Why don’t more people know that goth is about music?

Goth music generally doesn’t sell well because so much of it is too abrasive or weird and most artists are pretty far underground. Goth musicians also had a habit of denying involvement with “the goth scene” early on and goths, punks, metalheads, and emos are generally lumped together in mainstream media. Gothic fashion is much easier to rip off and sell than the subculture itself is. You (and more likely than not) your parents have probably heard and enjoyed semi-“goth” music before if you like Depeche Mode or The Cure.

How do I get into the goth subculture? 

Listen to the music. Spotify’s Dark and Gothic playlist is surprisingly good and I’m partial to this massive Spotify user-created playlist of old and new bands and this mix on Youtube with lesser-known bangers. Goth music varies widely but a fuckton of it is made to be danced to because we hang out in clubs a lot of the time. The map below isn’t quite accurate but may be able to help you find your local community be it a club or a nonprofit organization! It’s fine to be confused and it’s perfectly alright to ease into it slowly without worrying about how to dress.

Why do you guys like vampires so much?

They represent the pain and suffering of the human experience in a way that humans don’t plus Anne Rice’s Interview With the Vampire came out in the 80s and Bauhaus and David Bowie were in a movie about vampires. They also just straight up look cool.

Can you do a female Aztec Empire with baby Mexico?

Historical Footnotes:

I actually headcanon that mexico never really knew Azteca, or at least, not in any “conventional” sense. For most of Mexico’s life, Tlaxacala was her dominant mother figure, though she had many other parents, including Azteca/Mexica.

Uh Tlaxacala and Azteca/Mexica did not get along well at all, the latter being a constant imperial menace to the former, and resulting in Tlaxacala being more than grateful for the opportunity to flip the odds on the Aztec Empire.

Unfortunately, there’s not that many sources on fashion or clothing of Colonial Mexico prior to 1700s, so I’m basing Tlaxcala and Mexico’s clothes on European fashions of the late 1600s. 

Tlaxcala’s dress has virago sleeves, a style of sleeves made of strips of fabric into two puffs by a ribbon or fabric band above the elbow. It was popular in the 1620s-1630s.

Her off the shoulder dress top is based on a painting of Princess Mary, daughter of King Charles, which dates to the latter half of the 17th century. Honestly i did kinda combine multiple styles for this dress wheezes. The color scheme and overall style is inspired by a Van Dyck portrait of Marie-Louise de Tassis!

Mexico is wearing a dress inspired by the Infanta Margarita Teresa in a Blue Dress, a painting by David Velazquez!

God if I wanted to be truly accurate to the historical time period, I would’ve put Mexico in a farthingale but those are ugly >:(((((((

Azteca/Mexica is wearing a huipl, a sort of sleeveless blouse commonly worn by women in Mesoamerica. 

mexico might be a little too young looking for the time period but I’m only realizing this now writing these notes fuck

all in all i’m not the happiest with this (particularly with Mexico and tlaxcala’s outfits), hopefully in the future I can do better work and research :////

i know this is me being a massive nerd, but i’ve found the costume designer who did black sails and he has moodboards of everyone’s costumes on there

(also fun fact you can find ebay pages of pretty much all the costumes worn in the series and some of the details are fascinating - there’s a surprising amount of undershirts across the actresses’ outfits)

key highlights

silver and flint’s new coats in series 3 getting their own moodboards

eleanor’s clothes in series 1 and 2 being based off power suits, which makes her transition to more typical women’s clothes (and stays!) even more interesting

max’s moodboard has some of the most fascinating and intricate corsets and stays i’ve ever seen, both historical and contemporary, and it’s honestly kinda impressive how i can see that translated in her costumes??

there’s a behind the scenes photo of louise barnes (miranda barlow) lounging in one of her gowns with the cape from the end of s2 flashbacks and just. the layers. the details. i love it

silver’s s4 outfits are meant to have both maroon influences and "subtle native american vibes”

which is probably because the people of maroon island were also influenced by native american fashions, interestingly

blackbeard was partially influenced by assassin’s creed blackbeard

also blackbeard and silver have the same screenshot on their s3 and s4 moodboards respectively and i think he’s also from assassin’s creed but i’m not sure

we were deprived of seeing aristocrats wearing that hilarious banyans with weird cap combos in the salon flashbacks, which is an utter tragedy
