My posts
Honestly, I spent much of the week coping with storm migraines. You can tell, because I was reblogging a lot from under a cold compress rather than doing anything useful with life.
Reblogs of interest
The Hot Vintage Lady Polls are rough out there, y’all. Round three started closing yesterday (see what’s still open here), and as of this writing, we have lost Bette Davis, Alla Nazimova, Theda Bara, Myrna Loy, Barbra Streisand, Fay Wray, Lucille Ball, Ginger Rogers, and Olivia de Havilland--and it looks like Catherine Deneuve, Clara Bow, Lana Turner, and Mary Pickford are on their way out. Meanwhile, I learned about a ton of actresses I’d never heard of before, only to shriek when Sharmila Tagore, Nadira, and Waheeda Rehman lost this round. (Edwige, I will never forget you.)
Let me remind you (and me sometimes, too): Not everyone has the same taste or childhood attachments or cinema experiences as you. And everybody in this bracket loses. Everybody but one.
(I can tell I’m not cut out for brawling because I’m like, “I will be very sad to see Norma Shearer go, but Hazel Scott seems nice!”)

“Actually, Mr. Musk, I am an attorney. Do you know that?” Here’s the highlights of Mark Bankston, the man who brought down Alex Jones, coping with Elon Musk and Elon Musk’s Lawyer, who is not even licensed in Texas, for 100 pages of deposition.
Hozier Watch 2024: “Too Sweet” has now charted higher in the UK than “Take Me to Church,” and it’s getting real close on the US charts. This is a song that didn’t even make last year’s album. I am endlessly fascinated.
Happy Leland Melvin Day!
Happy Neil Banging Out the Tunes Day!
“Posting endless DNIs because we can’t (or don’t know we can) make spaces just for the people we do want to interact with” actually makes a lot of sense in this centralized social media hellscape.
There is a 20k mg weed gummy and nobody needs that. “Forget meeting the Hat Man this is what turns you into the Hat Man. This is worse than that torture drug that makes you experience 600 billion years in a second. This is the secret to honest to god shifting.”

Just this once, I will allow this AI rendition of a “traditional Polish family” and their traditional Polish woodchuck.
I am absolutely not saying there is anything wrong with being into tentacles; I’m just saying that Pyramid Head doesn’t even have them and thus is a pretty tame choice to complain about.

One of the things that’s so great about this Ilia Malinin free-skate program is, he makes it look so effortless that I would have never figured out on my own, without Tumblr’s commentary, that there’s a couple moves in here that no one in the world can do but him. Like, the very first jump and the announcers start screaming.

Fic Prompts: Free Day Friday
It's a little follow-up to Mistaken Identity au, as per the poll results!
The first week "home" had been...stifling. The man purporting to be Jak's father wouldn't leave him alone, always checking in on him, making sure he wasn't pulling at the IV, asking him questions he just didn't have the answers to. The one upside was that Damas had finally brought Daxter to see him. Of course, it had been right in the middle of Jak's fourth escape attempt, which may have been calculated. But considering Jak was pretty sure he was going to lose his mind without Daxter, he'd decided to let it go for now.
For the first hour, neither of them had even spoken. They'd just clung to each other in silence, taking solace in the knowledge that they were both alive, and here. Damas had stood to the side, watching, like he always did. He really hadn't given up on this "I think you're my kid" business. And without blurting out everything he knew about time-travel, Jak couldn't exactly prove him wrong. Frankly, even if he did tell Damas exactly why he was wrong -- namely, that Jak had technically only been born five-ish years ago -- Jak didn't think even that would convince him. He'd probably think it was some near-death hallucination Jak had in the desert.
Daxter wanted Jak to play along; let this new city think they were long lost children returning home. Anything was better than rejection and exile! But Jak just...couldn't. First of all, he was a terrible liar. Tess often told him he couldn't bluff his way out of a paper bag. But even more pressing, it just didn't feel right, repaying an act of kindness with one of deception. Besides, what would they do when they found out it was all a mistake? Better not to get comfortable at the outset.
It was, all in all, a difficult position to be in.
"So tell me why your friend there looks like a river-cat, but has human blood," Damas finally interrupted after close to two hours of watching them sign to each other.
"He has wha-"
"I HAVE WHAT?!"
Daxter bristled and leaped down onto the cot. "Whaddya mean my blood is still human?! How did you even figure that out?!"
Damas was entirely too cheerful when he answered, "Oh, nobody knew what you were when we found you, so we did a blood test. Using the wrong medicine could've killed you, after all. The vet called it a day and went home with a migraine once she figured out all your internal organs are identical to a human's. That's probably why you can talk, I suppose."
Sputtered explanations of Daxter's plight -- talking over each other and around each other, one blaming himself and the other refusing to accept it -- took up the next seven minutes while Damas just listened with a stupid grin. Maybe because it was the most Jak had willingly spoken to him since regaining consciousness.
On the bright side, after learning that Daxter was medically still human, Phobos had brought a pair of pants for him. Maybe they were an infant's button-snap trousers, but the buttons made room for his tail and both boys were grateful for it.
After four days of tortuous boredom and the hated IV, they finally let Jak out. No one had returned his clothes -- it figured, couldn't let him have gear that would help him escape -- so he'd had to shuffle out after Phobos in slightly undersized sandals that pinched his toes. Even with Daxter's enthusiastic and highly colorful commentary on the world outside the clinic, Jak hadn't been prepared for the size of the city around them.
He'd expected something like the Slums of Haven. Ramshackle buildings of sheet metal and broken roads surrounding a few locations of importance. The market district outside of the clinic alone could have fit all of Dead Town quite comfortably, and according to Daxter that was only a quarter of Spargus's true size! Asymmetrical sandstone houses and apartments lined city walls and a network of well-kept walking paths in a variety of levels, many with baskets of colorful fruits, or racks of laundry drying on landings high above the street.
Jak had immediately wandered away from Damas and Phobos, just trying to take it all in. The air was clear -- hot, but clean and free of smog -- and tasted of salt. A child collided with him, bounced off, and continued running as other children gave chase with shrieks of laughter. Jak had never seen kids playing in the street before. Where were the guards? The soldiers? Everyone outside walked with heads held high, calling out greetings, haggling over prices. The marketplace thrummed with life and color and sound, almost overwhelming in its intensity. Haven seemed like a ghost town by comparison!
Jak strayed between vendors' stalls, trailing his fingers along split-rail counters and sturdy awning poles. Daxter leaned eagerly over his shoulder, pointing out all the ammunition and daggers and armor being made. There were piles of metal gems being weighed on scales, traded back and forth, even being set into weapons! City of the hunter indeed. It looked like everyone had gems of their own to pay with. Daxter even swore up and down he'd seen an eight year old with a handful of metalbug gems buying a satchel of seeds!
"Oye! Don't wander off like that, kid!"
Phobos caught him two streets over, peering at a rack of creepy gas masks. She sounded more amused the annoyed, at least.
"See something you like?"
"This place is so crowded." Jak shaded his eyes and tried to guess how many of the people around him were warriors.
Phobos snorted and jostled his arm with a friendly elbow. "This is nothing. You should see the Arena!"
Arena? Like a stadium? The possibility of racing piqued Jak's interest, and he and Daxter exchanged eager glances.
"What's the Arena?" Daxter asked.
It was fairly hard to miss, as it turned out. Phobos pointed them towards a structure built into what looked like a caldera, just north of the market.
"There, that's the Arena: gathering place, courtroom, race track, stage and morgue, all in one!"
Daxter blanched. "What was that about a morgue?!"
Phobos shrugged. "It's built over lava, kid. Citizen candidates have to prove they can survive volcanic activity -- and Marauders, and- well, most desert life, really -- before we let them leave the city. If they don't take it seriously enough: whoosh! Crematorium."
"....ah." Daxter cringed and slid down Jak's back until only his ears were visible over Jak's shoulder. "Hence the age restrictions."
"Hence the age restrictions," Phobos agreed. She gave Jak a little shove. "Hey, if you want to get a look at it, one of our veteran hunters managed to trap a couple metaljackets recently. The Warriors' Guild is giving a demonstration for civ candidates and younger rookies this afternoon. Kind of a "here's what you can be if you don't slack off" thing."
"Ugh. Metaljackets." Jak rolled his eyes. "Not as annoying as Stingerheads, but they're up there."
He paused.
"Do you even have Stingerheads out here? Those stupid things drive me crazy."
"Well..." with a slightly chagrined look, Phobos tiptoed to wave down a slightly dismayed looking Damas, who was apparently questioning some baffled shopkeepers as to their whereabouts.
"I mean. We used to. But then we found out that Leapers really will eat anything they can fit in their mouth. We don't have a Stingerhead problem anymore."
Phobos shooed Jak over to the now relieved Damas. "Go on, I've got work to do. You guys, I dunno, bond or something. Take Jak to see the metaljacket exhibition."
Of course, in the clarity of hindsight, she would regret the suggestion.
There were still a few hours before the event was scheduled to take place, but there were already some people camped out to get front row seats. Damas didn't seem to think that this was a particularly wise strategy, commenting as he led the boys past the stands that the campers would likely run through most of the water they had on-hand while waiting. He paused when he noticed that one of the "campers" was an old man, stretched out on the benches and snoring softly.
"Well. Peat excluded. That guy just kind of does what he wants and manages to survive anyway." Damas tugged at his lip. "Honestly, nobody's really sure how. I mean, the man ate a cobra once because he said if it bites you, biting it back cancels out the venom."
"Does it?" asked Jak.
Damas’s head whipped around to fix wide eyes on Jak. "No! No, absolutely not! He was in the healing ward for days! But he managed not to need the foot amputated and ate the rest of the snake anyway."
Daxter gagged and Jak laughed. "I wanna meet that guy."
Rightly, Damas had a bad feeling about that.
When the exhibition did begin, Jak was a little disappointed. Sure, the long gunstaffs used to keep the metalheads back were cool, but he couldn't see the weapons' details well from the box where Damas usually sat. He leaned over the rail, squinting as one woman used her staff to vault into the air and slash a metaljacket back down to the ground. Daxter, long since grown bored, was scanning the rest of the stadium. Abruptly, he sat up and smacked Jak's arm.
"Hey lookit! It's a Precursor orb!" He pointed to a familiar shape lying on an awning halfway down the Arena walls. "Somebody must've dropped it! I bet we could get that later, huh Jak?"
Daxter looked around.
"...Jak?"
All Jak had heard was "Precursor orb" and the old childhood habits came flooding back. Without a second thought, he slipped over the railing the moment Damas’s back was turned. The metal was almost blisteringly hot, but he ignored it as he climbed down footholds that should have been too small for a human. Getting the orb without falling into the Arena would be tricky, but not impossible. He just had to watch his balance.
Up in the observation balcony, Damas was a little more focused on catching up on some paperwork than on the exhibition below. He tuned out the ottsel-boy muttering in alarm about...something...in order to review a new infrastructure proposal. The faster he got this done, the more time he would have to get to know Jak.
He heard some cries of alarm down below, but ignored them. The rookies would realize soon enough that the Guild had everything under control.
"Hey boss?"
"What, Kleiver?" Damas didn't even spare a glance at his talk-box.
"Er...ain't that your brat, climbing into the Arena?"
"What are you talking about? Jak's right-"
Damas finally looked up.
"...here?"
He dropped the datapad and leapt to his feet. "Oh don't tell me-"
A quick scan of the ring confirmed his suspicions and before he could stop himself he burst out, "JAK! WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!"
Jak paused and looked up at him from where he was leaning over the awning, orb in hand. He looked down at the orb, frowned, and looked back up at Damas.
"Is...that a trick question?"
"Get back up here before you fall and break your neck!" Damas yelled, gripping the balcony edge with white knuckles.
Behind him, Daxter sighed and shook his head. "Welcome to my world, Spikes," he said sympathetically, "welcome to my world."

Something to Stay Part 4
Sakura X Itachi
Prequel to Say anything
Itachi doesn’t like being called Uchiha-san.
Rating G
Call me by my name
It was 4:55 when Sakura rushed into the locker room to change into her scrubs for the day. She was always at least 15 minutes early, but this morning it was hard to get up. Sasuke had so many questions and worry for his brother, by the time she go to answering all of then it after 11pm and she wanted to crash into bed, which she did the moment she got home. Shower be damned!
Her alarm woke her from sleep at 430, apparently she snoozed it at 4am. Next thing she knew she bolted out of the bed, almost tripped on her bedding that was now on the floor of her bedroom. When she says almost tripped, she means full on face plant to the floor. A quick shower to wash of the hospital grim just for it to be replaced by a new layer. There was no time to dry her hair, which she put into a quick messy bun. Looking in the mirror after throwing on a simple pair of skinny jeans and oversized T-shirt with a bowl of ramen on it, she noticed the bumps on her face and the slight break out she has gotten due wearing surgical mask so long yesterday and only eating cookies. Looking at her watch, it was 445, the time she normally got to work. She grabbed her Toms and ran out the door.
Sakura made it to handoff just as the clock hanged to 5. Kabuto looked smug. “You look like a walking disaster this morning. Try to put yourself together before seeing patients. We don’t want you giving them a heart attack with how dreadful you look.”
Sakura found herself having to count to 10. She could not punch Kabuto, in the face multiple times, it would be unprofessional. She was sure he was upset with her getting to assist yesterday. They had 20 patients to cover. Kabuto took 4 and split the rest between her and the other intern. Anticipation and worry came to her briefly, knowing that she would have to take care of Itachi. She hoped Sasuke and his parents got what ever peaceful rest they could obtain. She heard the nurses complaining how Fugaku demanded them be able to stay past visiting hours to see that Itachi’s needs were being meet. She planned to pre-round on him last, so she could make a quick escape to meet before the formal rounds with Dr. Senju.
She finished going through the charts of her other patients in record time and able to quickly examine them with no problems. She had a couple appendectomies, cholecystectomies, and hernia repairs. She had one hernia repair who tried to get a little to handsy when she was examining his abdomen. Sakura made a mental note to have a nurse with her the next time she had to be in the room with him.
She had 20 minutes before she had to meet with her team. She planned on taking 5-10 minutes to quickly check on Itachi and then get coffee. She already downed her first cup when she was sitting in front of her computer. Sakura also didn’t care to fix her appearance, aside from her dark circles, she looked presentable. She wasn’t here to appeal to the male sex, she wanted to learn and follow in the footsteps of Dr. Senju.
Hana quickly gave her a report on how Itachi was doing. He had woken up in the middle of the night and went back to sleep after some pain medication was given. His family had left before he fell asleep, which came to be a relief for the nurses working. He was still resting this morning.
Sakura took a deep breath, gently knocked on his door. Hearing no response, which she expected, she entered.
Many years have gone by since she last saw the oldest son of Mikoto and Fugaku. From what she remembers when she was 11, he was a tall, dark, intimidating force. He once snuck her some dango that Sasuke didn’t want following her punching him in the face. His parents weren’t happy with her. She had ran off into their gardens after the incident.
This man laying on the bed sleeping was not the picture that she carried with her all these years. He looked paler than normal, his lines under his eyes were more pronounced, IVs in both his arms, and the IV poll on his right side. His heart tracing looked steady, no arrhythmias. Oxygen saturation was perfect. His breathing pattern and heart rate on the lower side confirmed he was in a deep sleep.
“Uchiha-san, its Dr. Haruno. I will be taking a quick listen to you and then will want to look at your surgical incision.” She had placed on her hand on his left arm, gently trying to get him to stir. She then went about assessing him this morning.
It was now time to look at his incision and knew she would have to be more forceful when trying to get him awake. He started to stir.
“Uchiha-san, its Dr. Haruno. I am just going to check your abdomen quickly to make sure everything is ok. How is your pain?” Those words brought Itachi out of his dream world and as he opened his eyes he was met with the most color he has ever seen, bright pink and emerald. He was once again reminded of a cherry blossom field.
As his eyes started to focus more he was met with Sakura. Gone was the scrawny little thing, and now before him stood a grown women. She still had delicate features, gone was the baby fat of her face. Her hair was on the top of her head in a bun. No makeup on her face, which was a breath of fresh air compared to the other women he has come across over the years.
“I will need to bring your covers down to get access to your bandages, is that ok?” Her eyes were warm and welcoming. She had a comforting hand on his shoulder.
He didn’t answer her right away, but went to slowly push his blankets down. The slight crunch he did caused pain to shoot through his abdomen.
“Uchiha-san you should let me do that for you. It wasn’t even 24 hours ago that you have an intense surgery. I will let nurse Hana now that you will need one of your as needed pain medications.” Her voice was smooth like honey.
He didn’t even notice as she removed the bandages on his abdomen and inspected the site. She worked quickly and professionally. After she was done looking she redid his bandages with fresh gaze and tape.
“Do you need anything else Uchiha-san?” He didn’t know why she was acting so formal with him, but he could understand it. They hadn’t seen each other in years, she wasn’t even a teenager the last time they met. He couldn’t remember ever holding an actual conversation with her.
“No Dr. Haruno. Have you heard from Sasuke any?” He couldn’t help but ask.
“I haven’t heard from him since last night. Hopefully he is getting some rest along with your parents, all of you have been through a lot. I almost thought you wouldn’t remember I'm friends with Sasuke.” She had a slight smile on her face. She was staring at him and it was then that he realized it was because he hadn’t said anything in reply. Itachi got caught up staring at her eyes, those dazzling emeralds.
“Sasuke talks about you and Naruto, well as much as someone like him can… Would it be possible to get something to drink? My throat feels raw.” He had to kick himself for asking her about the drink, he was an absolute idiot.
“Of course. I’ll see if one of the nursing students can bring you something. They are pretty good at checking in on patients and helping out. Dr. Senju and the team will be around later, get some rest Uchiha-san.” Sakura had brought his covers up to his chest and walked out the door. For some reason her saying Uchiha-san didn’t sit well with him.
A few minutes later he was brought multiple cups of water and students more then welling to help him. it was when his nurse came in with some pain medication that they were shooed away.
Itachi didn’t know what to do with himself now. When was the last time he was idle for so long.
________________________________________________________________________________________________
Sakura made it just in time to get a new cup of coffee before starting rounds with Dr. Senju. It was hard keeping an indifferent face when talking with Itachi. She couldn’t help as she acknowledged how attractive he was, but she wasn’t an airhead preteen anymore. She was able to separate work and her personal life. While Itachi muddied the water some, she would be professional with him and his family when they came into the hospital.
A proud smirk made its way onto her lips as she brought up her coffee cup to her mouth. She had beat Kabuto and the other intern to the meeting spot. She only had to make it though 3 more days until she had a day off. Sunday would be a glorious day!
Jin was the second to arrive, he was one in her first year class. He stood a head and half taller then her, he had an average build, his coloring was brown hair and brown eyes. Unlike her, he had a tan to his skin. He was doing a trauma rotation, but belonged to the orthopedic surgery program.
“ Wonder where Yakushi is? I heard you got to scrub into that surgery yesterday with Dr. Senju, man is she scary! “ She couldn’t help but be irritated by his voice, it wasn’t his fault that she was having the start of a migraine.
“He should be here soon, maybe he heard about a new case for the day.” It was unlike Kabuto to not have arrived by now. At times Wednesday could be a slow day compared to the other days of the week. Starting Friday - Monday you would get the reckless injuries that were brought about by too much drinking and wanting to have a good time. A couple of weeks ago it was a party boat that capsized when too many people were on it.
“Where is Yakushi? I’m ready to round, it was a long ass day yesterday. “ Dr. Senju came up, tea in hand. She was not Kabuto’s biggest fan to start and him not being here was not a way to get off her bad side.
“Dr. Senju, sorry to interrupt but Dr. Yakushi was pulled into a surgery with Dr. Orochimaru.” It looked like the nurses had sacrificed one of the nursing student’s to deliver the message. Sakura didn’t know the name of the poor girl, but could see her shaking.
A grumble came form Dr. Senju, her lips pressed together. “ Let get started. I take it you two are carrying the majority of the patients anyway. We will round on them and then you two can finish charting. You two will be up for first assist on the next surgery. Decide among the two of you who will take it when it comes.” She then started walking down the halls.
Rounds were lightening fast. It was decided that Jin would take the first surgery of the day since Sakura got the one yesterday. Jin vanished to do his work, while Sakura took to sitting at one of the empty computers at the nursing station. The gossip from the nurses would put Ino to shame. ‘notes and then lunch.’
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
“Shisui leave Sasuke alone. “ How many times did Itachi have to stop those two. Sasuke had gotten back at Shisui for giving his cell number to some of the nurses. Sasuke’s phone wouldn’t stop going off. In retribution apparently Shisui’s Instagram was hacked and was announced that he was undergoing treatment for multiple STDs, his prior conquests were not to happy about the announcement.
Shisui had come with food from Mikoto. Sadly he was unable to eat it due to being on clear liquids. The aroma itself was making Itachi’s mouth water. Itachi refused to let either Sasuke or Shisui eat his food and made them put it in the mini fridge in his room.
“I heard you have little Sakura-chan overseeing you. Aren’t you a lucky dog. Sasuke I don’t know how the two of you never got together even for a night.” Sasuke looked ready to attack. Itachi wasn’t aware that his cousin knew Sakura. Shisui initially worked for the family law firm, but then branched off with itachi to do pro-bono work. He typically got in later then Itachi and stayed to close up the office, where Itachi opened it. Shisui had guilt from not being to the office sooner he may have been able to prevent itachi getting shot.
“Uchiha-san I have come to check on you quickly. Sasuke-kun said that you may be in pain.” Sakura was at the door, her presence stopping the inevitable match between Sasuke and Shisui.
Sasuke looked annoyed and Shisui straightened up. Itachi could already tell Shisui was putting his best flirting face on. “Sakura-chan I have to ask if it hurt?” Sakura looked at Shisui annoyance spreading on her face.
“Shisui we have had this conversation before and I’m not currently in the mood to put up with your ridiculous pick up lines.” Sasuke was annoyed he knew his cousin was doing this to get on his nerves. He and Naruto made it their mission to make sure the guys wanting to date Sakura where fully screened, much to the annoyance of Sakura. She had to keep most of her relationships a secret, unless they were creeps. The creeps she held no remorse for when the two idiots chased them away. Just because they watched out for her didn't protect her from having her heart broken a few times, before she decided to focus solely on her training.
“Come on lets go find something to eat since Weasel here wont share his food.” It was then that Sasuke’s stomach started to grumble, he was in agreement to finding food and some tomato juice.
After dumb and dumber left Sakura was able to speak to Itachi. “Uchiha-san I know you have been having increased pain and wanted to make sure you were doing ok. Is there anything that you need? “
“Why do you call be Uchiha-san? “ Itachi blamed it on his pain medications for having no filter.
“What am I supposed to call you? I think Shisui has dibs on Weasel. “ she looked playful, mischievous look behind her eyes. It reminded itachi of the little girl he remembered from another time it seemed.
“I would like it for you to call me by my name Dr. Haruno. I feel like my father should be in the room when you say Uchiha-san. “ Sakura couldn’t imagine anyone calling Fugaku by anything other than Uchiha-sama. His face would probably get as red of the tomatoes that Sasuke adores so much in anger.
“Itachi-san considering you are older than me doesn’t that make you an old man?” Before Itachi could reply Sakura’s stomach decided to interrupt their conversation.
‘I forgot to eat lunch again! Two appendectomies came in that Jin and her split, which was around lunch time.’ Sakura couldn’t help but be embarrassed.
“Excuse me Itachi-san, but I will leave you to get some more rest.” Itachi didn’t want her to leave. She was a breath of spring in the shade of beige room.
“My mother made me a bento and my doctor has decided to only let me have liquids. I don’t think she would mind me giving it to you.”
Sakura was speechless. Mikoto’s food was a precious commodity, one that Sasuke refused to let anyone have. “I can get some food in the cafeteria, that was made for you and I’m sure you would like to have it once you are cleared for a regular diet.”
“I’m sure my mother would make me a new one when the time comes. This one hasn’t been in the fridge long and will still be fresh. I insist that you take it. Although I do ask that you enjoy it here as a way to repay me. I could use company that doesn’t want to punch the other person in the face.”
“Well that’s an offer I can’t refuse.” This meal would be the first of many, neither of them knowing that at the time.

You Are My Medicine – Rated K – 2D always needed his pills to take care of his migraines. But someone can also take the migraines away from him too.
Your the Best Present – Rated K – It's 2D's birthday! And of course 2D forgets that it is his birthday. But Noodle is also sad about something. Sorry, summary sucks.
Rated T:
A Midsummer's Wedding – Rated T – Noodle is getting married... but not to 2D. And he's not taking it very well, poor guy.
A Step Too Far – Rated T – Noodle catches the end of an argument between 2D and Murdoc. One that ends with 2D punching Murdoc and in trying to figure out what happened she learns of Paula. Confronting 2D about it seems like the only way to get answers even if they lead to an unexpected ending.
Bleeding Out – Rated T – "FACEACHE! Faceache, holy shit!" Murdoc yelled, pulling him from his bunker to the lift. "What? What's going on?" 2D squeaked, following the bassist. "It's- It's Noodle! Somethin' ain't right with her!" (2nu-centric, but not actually 2nu.)
Blimey, You're TwentyOne Already! – Rated T – It's Noodle's birthday and she has a special request. What on earth is 2D going to do?
En Route to the Vending Machine – Rated T – En Route to the Vending Machine that I'm Pretty Sure Doesn't Even Exist. Yep. That's all.
Fisticuffs And Frozen Peas – Rated T – Murdoc Niccals has the innate ability to get on the wrong side of everyone. Picking a fight is just the way he communicates. But picking a fight with Noodle? that's a different story. Contains some 2DxNoodle fluff, Oneshot. R&R xX
Gravity – Rated T – Oneshot. 6 years have passed since the release of Plastic Beach and the band reunited. Everything is going great and the Gorillaz are enjoying being together again as they prepare to release their new album. But what happens when 2D finds a letter to him inviting him to Paula's funeral? What will he find when he gets there? And more importantly, what had Paula been hiding from him?
I Promise – Rated T – It wasn't until 2D's head began to feel extremely light, and his eyes rolled back until he realized what he was doing, but there was no turning back now. Warning: Suicide Attempt and Aftermath
Just Say The Words – Rated T – 2D has a special surprise planned for his beloved Noodle and something to ask her. But it seems that he just can't find the time or place to tell her.
Louder Than Words – Rated T – '...They both felt safe and happy with each other...But now she was feeling an old worry tug at her mind's corners again…' The small trials and triumphs of a new relationship. 2DxNoodle. One shot, rated due to mild fluff.
May 23, 2011 – Rated T – Her presence in this stoic world he'd created sent him into an emotional spiral that brought about the worst of his migraines. The emotional detachment he'd grown fond of now mocked him, & he was forced to hold his tongue because it was too hard to speak.
May 23rd – Rated T – It's 2-D's birthday, but no one remembers, well, almost no one.
Melancholy Hill No More – Rated T – Noodle had always been good at finding 2D's secret spots... 2DxNoodle
Memories and Chocolate Pudding – Rated T – A short story I wrote as a request from a friend. She wanted a cute story that had to do with Phase 1 Noodle and 2D, something brother and sister like. Of course I added my own 2DxNoodle touch in the end. 10 years later of course. ; Enjoy.
No Rain – Rated T – If Noodle stays with him, then he's really gonna have it made! 2DxNoodle Song Fic.
Nursing a Flu – Rated T – 2D is sick, but he has a certain guitarist to take care of him.
Plastic Beach: Phase Three – Rated T – A 22 page story we had to type for my English class. It could be about anything we wanted so I chose this. 2DxNoodle.
Something's Up at the Spirit House – Rated T – Something is very wrong with the Gorillaz new home, and it's driving 2D mad. Will he and his bandmates be able to handle the mysterious forces at work at Saturnz Barz? A story to tie together the music videos and events of phase 4. Will be a little silly, a little eerie, and contain a dash of 2/nu.
The Meaning Of - Salt Skin Drafts – Rated T - A series of one-shots revolving around 2D and Noodle and the growth of their relationship between phases 2 and 3. Would-be continuations to my discontinued story Salt Skin. Friendship/Eventual Pairing.
Ups and Downs – Rated T – Noodle and 2-D both have strong feelings for eachother, but can there relationship take the challenges life throws at them? 2-DxNoodle COMPLETE!.
When You’re Close to Me – Rated T – Noodle has returned home to her boys, and is ready to face the feelings she'd had while away.
Rated M:
A Look I Used To Know – Rated M – He bit his lip as his eyes returned to her, studying her unsure movements while she tried to ignore his presence as he watched her. He felt his heart ache as she stood to her feet, the dejection in her body unclear to most was a scream in Stuart's ears...
A Simple Understanding – Rated M – Their grief was eating away at them, but all it took to save them was a simple understanding of feelings. 2DXN
Another Story – Rated M – This is not based in kong nor plastic beach. In fact this is just based between 2D and Noodle. Russel and Murdoc are mentioned but not by name. Please read and review!
Awake – Rated M – After a night out, 2-D awakes with a familiar face next to him, and very little memory of what happened the night before. A 2Nu fic. Rated M for strong language and sexual content.
Confessions – Rated M – 2D wiggled his eyebrows, a smirk threatening to break out. "Yeh think yeh better than meh?" Noodle scoffed. "Of course I am, 2D, I could beat you at any game you throw at me." She tried to ignore the fact that he had edged much closer that he was previously sitting. "Well," 2D breathed. Noodle swore she could feel his breath tickling her face. "Wah 'bout this one?" STRONG LANGUAGE
Just Passing Through – Rated M – A reunion between two band members after four years apart. 2DxNoodle. Rated M
Plastic Beach Romancing – Rated M – 1st fanfic ever! Yay. Everyone from the Gorillaz. So Noodle makes it to Plastic Beach and finds 2D just before he overdoses. I'd love to get comments please. Noodlex2D! 3
Reuniting – Rated M – To make matters worse, somehow, some way without Noodle's consent or knowledge, the three men had thought it would be amazing to vacation in the middle of the woods, in the middle of nowhere, while staying in a log cabin of all things. This is a gift fic for WreckTangle. Rated M for sex...you've been warned. 2DxNoodle. O.o
She's My Collar – Rated M – Noodle and 2D have a secret that they feel has been kept long enough. They want to figure out a way to tell the others and come up with something rather creative. When Russel and Murdoc hear the lyrics to "She's my Collar" for the first time what will their reaction be? Can 2D and Noodle defend themselves or will their secret affair become just a memory? Rated M.
That One Day – Rated M – This fan fic has the song "Girl Gone Wild" in it by Madonna because it fits the plot lol. There is also an outside character by the name of Marcus that is mentioned. Rated M for lots of sexual scenes lol. Enjoy!
The Rube Goldberg Effect – Rated M – Poll winner! 2D has fallen asleep on Plastic Beach. His back now lobster red, he's in desperate need of relief. A hot summer day, a sunbite, a bottle of Aloe, and a bathing suit covered body. So what's Noodle have to do with this?... Aloe can be fun, too

Day by Day - Day 4
BTS Fanfic AU - Day 4′s writing improv for Day by Day on Twitter.
Member: TaeHyung - all members involved.
Pairing: Don’t know, but probably not romantic.
Genre: Unknown at first, has turned into somewhat mystery/angst
Polls involved. If you want to read on Twitter or participate in polls, check it out HERE.
Day 1 : Day 2 : Day 3
Tumblr media
Day 4 HoSeok shook his head, frustrated. Why did he feel the need to take care of this kid...
After what he'd done...
"I'll be fine here... don't worry about me..." he said, watching Tae's brow furrow in pain. TaeHyung just groaned an ambiguous reply.  Jimin had told him to leave immediately... and he probably should have.  Besides... he needed to get back to...
HoSeok swore under his breath and checked the time... it was almost 1am and the kid would probably be asleep... or worried. He didn't know whether or not to text him, letting him know he was ok or not.
How would he even explain? He'd probably worry him even more by texting... especially if he was already asleep.  HoSeok looked at TaeHyung and thought about what to do.
Tumblr media
HoSeok stood and gently touched Tae's shoulder.
"Where's the bathroom?"
"Upstairs..." Tae moaned.  HoSeok walked upstairs, but instead of using the bathroom, he pulled out his phone and brought up JungKook's number.
*Hey Guk... I'll be out all night. See you in the morning.*
HoSeok pressed "send" and silently prayed for no answer...  There wasn't one.
While he was upstairs, he saw a few doors... the one to the bathroom, a closed one at the end of the hall... and an open one, to a bedroom. Moving towards the door, he peaked in... The small bedside lamp illuminated the room in an eerie light.  He was surprised at how... bland... the room seemed. He'd been told that Kim TaeHyung was incredibly particular about his tastes... loved bright colors and chaotic decor.
This room had nothing but beige, sparse walls. No photos.
HoSeok frowned at the pang that hit him. He shouldn't care. He only cared about his friend, not this stranger. Not the stranger who hurt his friend.
Still, HoSeok grabbed the pillow and blanket from Tae's bed. Walking into the living room, he saw TaeHyung had laid down on the couch, the bottle of water now on the floor.
Guess those pills kicked in, he thought.  Still, he walked over, lifted Tae's head gently and placed the pillow underneath, before covering him with the blanket. It was just for tonight, he told himself. It was because of the guy's migraine, the pain of it, at least he was suffering too... Tomorrow would be different.  Tomorrow...
HoSeok shook his head. What was he even trying to do? Why had he even tried to find him in the first place? He sat down on the loveseat opposite the couch, staring at the kid asleep on the other side. What the hell was he going to tell Kookie?
Nothing. The kid wouldn't like him searching him out. Let him never know he found him. TaeHyung groaned in his sleep, hand going to his head. HoSeok sighed, and let his head fall back. The leather of the loveseat was cool against his neck, and he felt his eyes grow heavy.
I'll close them... he thought... but only for a moment. just for a moment... then I'll leave...
No long after, HoSeok was fast asleep.
Tumblr media
TaeHyung felt completely and utterly drained. He also felt lightheaded and slightly nauseated. Slowly opening his eyes, he thought back to what had happened before he'd fallen asleep...
Where was he?  On the couch... living room... That guy... HoSeok had been here. Tae's eyes shot open completely and he sat up fast... too fast... Dizziness washed over him and he closed his eyes again, trying to calm down. Taking some deep breaths, he opened his eyes again and slowly looked around...
The place was empty...
Slowly he looked around...
"Hey..." he called out, his throat and mouth feeling dry and raspy.  "Are you here?"  As he stood to his feet something fell and pooled around his feet...
A blanket? No... HIS blanket... and his pillow was on the couch too... What the...
Was this really the same guy that had punched him and spat such crap at him yesterday? That had looked at him with utter disgust and hate?
He'd given him... a pillow and blanket?
He... he had to be hallucinating.  As he passed the kitchen he saw a note on the counter. Picking it up, he read,
"This is my number. Call me when you're ready to talk about JungKook. This is between you and me, so don't tell anyone... HoSeok."
Don't tell anyone, huh? Tae thought. That translated into "Don't tell Jimin."  And he wasn't sure if he should or not. Tae made his way upstairs to his room. It made him sad... He didn't like his room. It was boring... but whenever he put something up, colors or photos or... anything... it would start to cause his headaches again.
Jimin suggested just leaving everything blank... for now anyway. And "for now" had turned into 6 months. He barely remembered the accident... and had no recollection of what had caused it or what had happened that day.  Nobody told him anything, and when he tried to think... migraines.
It was better to shy away from the pain... to ignore it.
He turned to go to the bathroom but stopped. There was something on his desk that wasn't there before...
TaeHyung walked over and looked at the photo on his desk... his blood running cold. His phone buzzed in his hand... and he didn't even remember he'd had his phone. It was ringing... it was Jimin... but he had to look at the photo on his desk…
Tumblr media
TaeHyung stood frozen as his phone buzzed in his hand... He swiped his thumb right and held the phone to his ear.
"Hello?" he said, his voice seeming far away.
"Are you ok Tae? did you sleep well?" TaeHyung reached for the photo on the desk, trying not to let his mind race...
"I..." he closed his eyes and breathed in. "I had a migraine last night... a bad one..."
Jimin was quiet for a moment.
"Didn't HoSeok leave? Did he talk to you?" he asked.  Tae stared down at the photo... his eyes beginning to sting with tears... Why? Why was he crying?
"TaeHyung?"
"He asked some questions... I talked about... photography..." Tae grunted, his fingers pressing around the photo, creasing it as a stab of pain shot through his head.
"Damn HoSeok! I told him to leave! He can't just let me explain later..."  TaeHyung could barely
register what Jimin was saying.
"Explain... damn it, Chim... my head... it's..." TaeHyung bit back a scream, shouting through clenched teeth and lips.
"Tae? What's wrong? TaeHyung!" Tae dropped his phone and fell against the table, clenching the photo in his fist. But he had to look at it...  But Jimin...
Tae fell to his knees and pressed the palms of his hands against his head.
"Chim!" he called. "Chim help me!  Please!" Tears were streaming down his face and the sharp pangs of the migraine were coming in shorter and shorter waves.  He could barely breathe, and he barely heard Jimin's voice calling to him.  Everything was going black...
"It hurts, Chim!  It hurts!" Tae fell on his side, out of breath and in agony.  The photo still clenched in his fist.
"I'll call Hyung!" Jimin yelled through the phone. "Yoongi! Call him now!" Jimin yelled. TaeHyung's vision was going black around the edges but he was seeing stars.  His chest began to ache as well.
"It's gonna be ok, TaeTae... You're gonna be ok! Hyung is on his way!" TaeHyung couldn't hear him after that... but he brought the photo up to his line of sight again... Who was he? Why was Tae with him? Why did he look so happy?  Another stab of pain hit TaeHyung, sharper and even more painful than he'd ever experienced.
He shouted before the blackness and sweet oblivion overtook him. But even in the darkness that tried to erase what he had just seen... the imprint of the photo remained... Who was he?

Klaine Fic: A Dizzy Twister Dance
Written for Day 4 of Klaine Advent 2017 Prompt: “Drink”
Summary: Blaine feels terrible, but he simply cannot miss his dance exam at NYADA today. He's just going to have to pull through it - hopefully with the help of Cassie July's gorgeous teaching assistant.
Word Count: 2000 - Read on AO3.
Blaine was dying.
Okay, that was slightly dramatic, even for him.
But if someone were to ask him, “Hey Blaine, how you feelin’ today?”
His response would have to be somewhere along the lines of, “I’m dying.”
However, it didn’t matter that Blaine had woken up this morning with a pounding headache, a scratchy throat, and a thrumming heart rate; Even if he was dying, he had to get to today’s class.
After the results Cassie July had given him for his last semester in dance class, Blaine was truly feeling the pressure on this, the morning of his practice examination. Okay, so it wasn’t his final graded performance today, but Cassie was known amongst students for making her mind up about eventual grade decisions based on how well they did on this day.
Blaine felt queasy as he let the subway car he rode to NYADA rock him from side to side, leaning his forehead against a poll he was certain contained the kinds of germs that made him so ill in the first place. He hadn’t even eaten any breakfast this morning but that wouldn’t stop him spewing up on the poor unsuspecting old lady sat in front of him unless he could get off soon. Luckily, his stop was next.
‘You only need to be here for a couple hours, then you can crawl back home to bed and wallow in self-pity again’ he told himself as he all but fell out of the subway doors and made his way to class.
~
“Listen up, rejects! We’ve got a lot to get through today, so I want to keep to a tight schedule as we do this. Am I clear?”
There was a faint mumble from the group but no clear answer. Blaine could barely keep his eyes open, let alone answer the question. At the front of the class, Cassie July looked highly affronted.
“Excuse me?” she asked menacingly. “AM?” *BANG* “I?” *BANG* “CLEAR?” *BANG*. She brought her dance instructor’s stick down hard on the floor after every word, to wake everyone up and get their attention. All it did was make Blaine’s head pound even more.
“Yes, Miss July,” the class all but sing-songed together in a manner befitting pre-schoolers, not college kids.
“Okay,” she abruptly turned and walked to the stereo set up in the corner. “Now, first thing’s first, we’re gonna start with a ten-minute warm up, and then I’ll call you in alphabetically, in groups of four or five, to do your individual assessments.”
Blaine’s heart dropped at that word. Alphabetical. That meant some serious cursing on his part that his mother ever agreed to take his father’s surname all those years ago. It means he will now most definitely be in the first group to perform. He didn’t think it was possible, but the room began to spin a little more.
“Also supporting me today will be my junior assistant from this year who I know some of you may be unfamiliar with if you had classes with Laura this semester. So for those who don’t know, this is Kurt Hummel.”
She gestured over to the man next to her who gave a small smile and raised his hand in greeting.
Just like that, Blaine’s headache seemed to dull but his heartrate also picked up exponentially. Ahhh, Kurt Hummel. Sweet, gorgeous, muscled, older, tank-top wearing dancer, Kurt Hummel. Yet another reason for Blaine to drag himself out of bed this morning.
The man was a Greek god and Blaine was pretty sure Kurt was put on this earth to make dance class that little bit more bearable for him. Blaine certainly wasn’t immune to the guy’s oblivious flirting and (on the odd occasion) eye-fucking he directed at Blaine in class warmups; usually when Blaine was bent into a strange yoga-like pose with his ass in the air or his foot up on the barre.
Kurt was also so very kind and sweet to Blaine on the few occasions they’d interacted, which usually ended in Blaine doing something stupid like snort-giggling at his own joke or tripping over his words. Kurt’s ability to humour Blaine’s flaws only made Blaine crush that little bit harder on the guy who was senior to him in both age and position at NYADA.
Blaine was pulled out his moony-eyed staring at Kurt as the warm up music began playing through the sound system and everyone around him was moving to find their own area in the dance studio.
‘Okay. Focus, Blaine. You only have to make it through this class and then you’re done.’
Blaine tried as hard as he could to follow Cassie’s directions and keep up with her speed and position as she moved from one stretch to another and from one dance move to the next. By the end of the first phase of the warm up, Blaine’s temperature was quickly rising and he used the few seconds of interlude between songs to hurriedly unzip his hoody and throw it off to the side somewhere.
The room really was spinning now and when he turned back to get in line, he caught eyes with Kurt who was looking at him rather concernedly.
“Are you okay?” Kurt mouthed to him from the sidelines.
Was Blaine okay? Honest answer: No. He felt awful. Was he about to let Kurt think that?
“I’m fine,” Blaine mouthed back, trying for a smile which probably looked painful.
Kurt didn’t look all that convinced as the music faded in to a new routine and Blaine worked to pick up the speed. When Cassie eventually had them all exhausted, she called for time as everyone stopped to catch their breath and wipe away the sweat before their upcoming individual performances.
As Blaine stood in place, he suddenly found it hard to keep his head up. Bending at the waist, hands on his knees and head hanging down, Blaine panted for air and desperately willed his heart rate to slow down and the room to stop spinning.
“Blaine?” Kurt called, making his way through the group towards him, concern in his voice.
Just as Blaine was about to lift his head and reassure Kurt he was fine, the room seemed to turn a whole 360 degrees as his vision went black and he heard Kurt shout his name.
~
“Woah man, is he okay?”
“Oh well, that’s one less person to compete against today.”
“Miss July, should I call the medic?”
“Ugh, Fat Ass has probably been skipping meals. That’s why he fainted.”
Blaine only dimly registered these voices swirling around his foggy mind from above him. He felt something solid underneath him and suddenly seemed to realise he was lying on the wooden floor of the dance studio.
“Ooh, Mr. Hummel, I think he’s awake.”
“Oh, thank god. Blaine? Blaine, it’s Kurt.”
Kurt? Kurt was there. Instantly, Blaine felt pressure on the side of his face and neck. A hand. And a thumb stroking his cheekbone.
“Can you hear me, Blaine? If you can, just give me a little squeeze.”
Suddenly Blaine found one of his limp hands being entwined with Kurt’s and he made sure to squeeze with all the energy he had.
“That’s great, Blaine. Can you sit up at all? Open your eyes?”
Groggily, Blaine’s eyelids fluttered open and he was greeted with a rather disconcerting sight of Kurt leaning right over him and half a dozen students standing around him. The shock was enough to make Blaine want to bolt upright, but Kurt’s hand seemed to slowly steady him as he helped Blaine gently ease himself up.
Kurt was knelt next to him, still holding on to his hand as Blaine moved his other palm to his forehead – the migraine from earlier lessening but not going away.
“Okay guys, he’s alright. Can we give him some space now? Miss July has just come back in so go get back in formation,” Kurt said, waiting for them to follow commands.
The group of dancers turned on their heels with a grumble of indignation, but not before the rudest one of the bunch made a comment about Blaine landing on his fat ass – intending for him to hear it. Blaine blushed a fair amount and Kurt shot the girl a filthy look before turning back to Blaine.
“For the record, I’d say I owe a great debt of gratitude to that ass of yours, then,” he winked as he said it and Blaine found himself blushing even more.
“Oh!” Kurt suddenly dropped his smirk as he leant behind to pull something out of a supply bag. “Here! Take this.”
Kurt had produced an energy drink from one of the bag pockets as he unscrewed the cap and handed it to Blaine.
“Drink up!” he indicated to the bottle as Blaine put it to his lips, still in a bit of a daze. “I can’t let you go fainting on me again, huh?”
It wasn’t until he started drinking that Blaine realised how dehydrated and hungry he was, finishing half of the liquid in one go.
“Ahhh,” he exhaled after his gulp, “thank you.”
“It’s no problem.”
There was a somewhat awkward pause here as Kurt didn’t really know what else to say, so Blaine just took another sip and waited.
“Okay,” Kurt sighed, “So it looks like your assessment isn’t going to go ahead today now. Cassie even said to me she’ll find room for you to do it by yourself on another day. So, for now, you have the rest of class off.”
Blaine heaved a sigh of relief. Thank god Cassie wasn’t going to make him do his performance today. He didn’t think he would make it through if not.
“The problem now is, I don’t think you should be going back home on your own quite yet. You still look a little pale.”
Not to lie, Blaine did still feel pretty terrible. What felt worse, however, was having Kurt (always pristine and amazing Kurt) seeing him looking far from put together like this.
“If I didn’t have to help Cassie out, I totally would have offered to come home with you an-“
Now it seemed it was Kurt’s turn to blush. Blaine couldn’t help it when he started to giggle and had to cover his mouth. Kurt looked somewhat embarrassed for a few seconds before he too chuckled a little.
“It’s okay, Kurt, really. Maybe I can just wait for my room mate to finish classes and I’ll go back home with him.”
Kurt was ready to accept this when he asked, “So what time does he finish?”
“Oh, not until 5pm today. But it’s fine, I can wait in the library.”
Kurt’s affronted look indicated to them both that he was so ready to argue, neither of them noticed Cassie had made her way over, coming to stand towering above them both. Crossing her arms, she interrupted whatever Kurt was about to say.
“Look, Hummel. Here’s the deal. I know you wanna jump the kid’s bones so badly you’re gonna pop a boner in class one day. And Anderson, I know you would climb that like a tree in an instant,” she jerked her thumb towards Kurt here. “So just take the lesson off, Kurt. I’m fine. I can manage on my own. Take the poor kid home. And Blaine, I’ll e-mail you with a new assessment date this afternoon. Don’t worry about it.”
With that, she turned her back to return to the class as they were finishing up the routine she’d left them rehearsing.
Kurt and Blaine seemed to find themselves in stunned silence for a moment before an exchange of looks and a small smile told them all they needed to know. It was about time they got out of here.

2020: Who Saw THIS Coming?
Remember when I retired from blogging?
I actually did retire, except, I consider this little corner of the Internet -- MY corner -- to be a place where I document the big stuff. I told you about my engagement and then came back several months later to recap my wedding. Remember that? The wedding that THANKFULLY occurred in late 2019 before the world turned to shit??
Yeah. You know what happened. “The pandemic.” “The virus.” “Covid.” Covid-19″ (I personally prefer the first five Covids; I feel like they really fell off after that). “CORONAVIRUS.”
THE DUMPSTER FIRE THAT IS...2020.
Suuuuuuuuure, good ol’ Rona robbed Leo and me of our Italian honeymoon, but aside from that? We were able to squeeze in all kinds of fun things in good ol 2019 -- oh how I miss you, 2019 -- and have an unforgettable year. This year is proving to be unforgettable too -- just, ya know -- in like, a traumatizing sorta way.
Anyway, as I was saying, I have to document the big stuff on here. I imagine myself reading and looking back on this blog like an old, embarrassing diary (hell, I do it already) (the dating posts make me want to die) and who can omit THIS chapter? It’s got it all: a deadly virus, racially fueled riots and protesting, social injustice, a deranged madman in the oval office, and... MURDER HORNETS?
Tumblr media
exactly.
So rather than write out a whole long thing about my experience in 2020, I thought I’d break it down by month, starting in March. I’m going to be documenting the good, the BAD (there’s a decent amount of that), and anything new that transpired in that time frame. Did I take up any hobbies? Start baking sourdough? I guess you’ll find out.
Let’s start with:
MARCH.
The good. There was immediately a novelty to this whole Covid-19 thing. In the first half of the month I was commuting, going to work in my NYC office, and doing my usual amount of social things on weekends. When it was decided in mid-March that we’d have to work and stay home for a “bit” (lol), there was something exciting about it. We made jokes about social distancing and masks and had cutesy puns for “quarantining.” We hit the ground RUNNING with Zoom calls/video chats. There was something fun and exhilarating about all this.
The bad. People I KNOW got this virus. People I know LOST people to this virus. My Grandma’s health took a turn and things did not look good, but I couldn’t go see her. Shit, I didn’t see ANYONE except Leo, and even he was going to work in his office every day. I had to get used to this abrupt abundance of...alone time.
What’s new? I’ve always taken to social media as a creative outlet, but I QUICKLY started using it more -- and differently -- once things in the world got hairy. I treated my Instagram like my one gateway to the outside world, because it was: I surveyed my followers and asked how they were doing. I took silly videos talking to myself in the mirror. I wrote long captions on my photos letting everyone know what my experience was like. I tried to entertain those who were stuck at home, as I was, and needing an escape.
Oh, and ya know... Tiger King.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
APRIL.
The good. The weather was getting nicer, so Leo and I took advantage and often went for walks around our complex and even a local trail/preserve in our town. We started doing “lawn visits” to see our families from a distance, and that helped. For two people who were used to seeing their ‘people’ regularly, 3-4 weeks of not seeing them took a toll. I also started doing “Grateful April” on Instagram, where I shared a few things each day that made me happy/appreciative. Some followers of mine followed suit, which was awesome to see.
The bad. Hmm, I think all this sitting and lack of moving is hurting my back? (#foreshadowing). Also, ENOUGH with the Zoom calls and “virtual happy hours,” for the LOVE OF GOD! Oh, and that “novelty” I mentioned in March? That wore off quickly, and a lot of us started to feel weird, sad, isolated, uneasy, unproductive and stir-crazy. Myself included.
We were also reminded that this was the month we were supposed to depart for our honeymoon. Ugh.
What’s New? I did some arts & crafts (I painted ceramic bowls I bought from Target), gave myself a mediocre pedicure, found new/creative ways to engage and interact with folks on social media (polls, asking questions like “what’s in your Amazon cart?” and “who sponsors your quarantine?”), and got to see what it was like to have a husband with hair. I also discovered my love of tie-dye and wore...a lot of it.
Oh, and I was on CBS news talking about screen time. Iconic.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
MAY.
The good. The weather got summer-like and I definitely felt a MAJOR shift in my mood. Leo and I spent more time outside on our deck: listening to music, making margaritas, talking to neighbors. I even took work calls outside and got some much-needed Vitamin D. I had my first real “beach days” (bathing suit, chair and all). I started to FINALLY see my family in person; first, outside only -- and then eventually indoors.
The bad. Ahmaud Arbery. George Floyd, obviously. Dumb-dumbs protesting the lock-down and demanding haircuts. CLEARLY more to come on this. (See: June)
Oh, and my back pain? WAY worse.
What’s new? Some more arts and crafts: I started painting shells I found on the beach (lol).  I bought a pair of Crocs and documented the most absurd series on social media where I paired the heinous footwear with items that rhymed (Crocs & socks, Crocs & shamrocks, Crocs & botox...you get the idea.) I experimented with a few new recipes (made lemon poppy muffins & homemade vodka sauce). I re-watched Mad Men and it made me miss my office and coworkers.

JUNE. A rough one.
The good. We started doing more social things with our families: BBQs, celebrating Father’s Day, our nephew’s baptism. Doing this truly felt like “normalcy” and in those moments, we’d forget about all the garbage going on around us. I also decided (yes, after 3 friggin months of lock-down) that I needed to start exercising; something I needed for my physical AND mental health. I thought it could help my back -- which, yes, was feeling worse as time went on -- and it did make me feel good to spend a little time each day walking, jogging, lifting weights and just MOVING.
The bad. Um? Everything? For starters, the racial tension in the country came to a head and erupted in a MAJOR way -- and while the protests and all the #BlackLivesMatter movements were a positive thing, it absolutely brought out the WORST in so many others. There was rioting, looting and violence. Racism ran RAMPANT. Karens went wild. “Covidiots” were ENRAGED about being told to wear masks. There was police brutality and a President who threw fuel into the fire. Tensions and emotions were at an all-time high and we all got a harsh dose of reality that this country has SO FAR TO GO in regards to equality and civil rights and even basic human decency. I was -- and still am -- sad for this country.
Also? I finally went for an MRI on my back and found out I have two herniated discs; well THAT certainly helps explain things! Shortly after, I pull my back out entirely, and could not walk or move. The pain is excruciating; debilitating and I think, “can things get any worse?” and then...
My Grandma passes away.
It hurts. It still does. It was inevitable -- as death is, especially given her age and health condition at the time -- but it still felt like taking a bullet. I will always be grateful that I was able to get to see her one day before she passed away to say goodbye, but it’s hard not to be resentful that she didn’t get the memorial service and send-off she so deserved because of the pandemic.
(Side note: read about my amazing Grandma HERE)
In short, June sucked.
What’s new? We got a new stationary bike and set it up outside on the deck which was awesome, and I ended the month getting some epidural shots at the spine doctor. While the (strong) meds and injections didn’t exactly *cure* my issue, they made things a LOT better. Leo and I also drove into NYC (my first time there in MONTHS!) so I could go get my migraine Botox treatment at my neurologist.
I voted by mail (which is not fraudulent, by the way) (#eyeroll) in the NY Primary.
I also got not one, but TWO, amazing rainbows the week my grandmother passed away. I needed those, and I’d like to think she knew that.

JULY.
The good. More beach days and some consistent amazing weather (thanks, Mother Nature!). I started seeing a chiropractor twice a week and quickly respond REALLY WELL to treatment and start feeling a lot better. I put things into perspective and realize how lucky I am to live where I do -- on the beach -- and get to enjoy all this newfound free time doing things I enjoy. We also celebrate some family birthdays and have a small family gathering in honor of our beloved Dorothy.
Have you noticed that “seeing family” always ends up in my “good” section?
The bad. Naya Rivera died unexpectedly, John Lewis died, REGIS died. Our President remains as unhinged as ever, we desperately want to #FreeBritney, and Kanye West has a really sad, scary and concerning, uh, episode. He’s also running for President, maybe? Or not? On a personal note, Leo and I tried to eat dinner on the beach one night and LIT-rally got attacked by seagulls. Weeks later, bull sharks are spotted in the ocean RIGHT WHERE WE LIVE, and they prohibit swimming.
What’s new? Hamilton on Disney+: need I say more? The fig tree that’s been on our deck for three summers FINALLY started to grow figs! I re-watched Broad City and it is just... *chef’s kiss* perfection. Taylor Swift releases her album ‘folklore’ and I listen on repeat for seven days straight.

AUGUST.
Well, who knows? We’re not there yet. 2020 has certainly been a ride (and it’s not over yet; dear GOD), and I still can’t believe it ended up being this insane year, unlike anything I’ve EVER experienced. And while it undoubtedly has come with its fair share of challenges, it has also come with some blessings.
I have all this extra time now and I make a point to use it productively (most days). I log off from working and go outside, I walk the beach, go in our complex pool, ride the stationary bike, catch up with friends/family on the phone, read, and watch/re-watch shows.
The commute and hustle and bustle of every day in my pre-pandemic life would make me stressed and anxious; I was constantly snoozing alarm clocks, rushing in the mornings, dealing with overcrowded/delayed trains, and getting home late each night.
Life has become slower, in a good way, and it’s made me appreciate the simple things. I care less about material things and more about the basics: enjoying nice weather/the outdoors, my home, my husband, my family and close friends.
I genuinely stopped caring about getting my hair and nails done, going out to dinner, getting dolled up, or traveling. Don’t get me wrong: I enjoy all these things and I’ll of course do them again, but this whole situation made me realize that what I need *most* in this world are the simple joys that money can’t buy.
And for that? I’m grateful.
*stay safe, friends.*

5M4F 11: Protest by Phone (Round 2) [Sessions, Tillerson, Bannon, and the repeal of the Affordable Care Act] Dependencies: 5M4F10. (TIME SENSITIVE)
I posted a preview of this when the Senate confirmation hearings started on Tuesday, but I’ll give you the full run down here: this week and next (at least), your 5M4F tasks will be to script, and then make, calls to your representatives to ask them to rigorously vet and ultimately reject the confirmation of Trump’s most dangerous cabinet and White House appointments, to protest those appointments after the fact, and/or to object to top-level legislative priorities of the incoming administration.
Two of the appointments you’ll be protesting this week are cabinet appointments and require Senate approval: Jeff Sessions and Rex Tillerson (nominated for Attorney General and Secretary of State, respectively). The third, Steve Bannon, is being appointed to a White House position that does not require Senate approval, but you still need to call your representatives and put pressure on them to act in opposition to his appointment. Your voice is also urgently needed to halt the repeal of the Affordable Care Act.
The basic thrust of the task is pretty simple: write yourself a script that you can use to walk you through your calls to your representatives (there is an in-depth breakdown of this process in 5M4F5, which is also excerpted behind the cut), then give your local field offices a series of calls to protest these appointments. To be most effective, you want to only call your representatives about one issue at a time, so you will need to make multiple calls throughout the week to best keep your calls focused and to the point.
I also strongly urge you to share this information with your friends and family offline and encourage them to join you in making calls with you. Our goal should be to keep the phones ringing at every field office in the country, all week long, demanding that our elected representatives do their jobs, i.e., represent us.
If you want to do this all in one go: unfortunately, these can’t be completely finished all in one go, because of the issue of keeping individual calls focused on a single issue. Also, it is probable that your local field office will be closed on Monday because of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. But what you can do is script all your calls together (that you can do today, and it’s basically a copy-paste job, so it shouldn’t be too onerous), then make your three calls about Sessions in one block on Tuesday, your three calls about Tillerson in one block on Wednesday, et cetera.
If you want to do this five minutes at a time: easier! Your three scripts for a single appointee will probably only take you about five minutes to assemble, and one call will probably take about five minutes to make. You can sprinkle your scripting throughout the day today, and sprinkle your calls throughout your field offices’ business hours during the week; or script your calls about Sessions today, then call about Sessions and script for Tillerson Tuesday; whatever.
You might want to actually make your ACA calls first, potentially—as I understand it, the actual confirmations of Sessions and Tillerson can't happen until just after the inauguration. They can do more harm to the ACA before that.
There is some starter info on each of the four nominees/appointees/issues, with reasons to call about them, behind the cut; as well as a template for your scripts, and some info about what to do if you can’t make calls. Shortcut links:

What to do if you can’t make calls.
Once you've made your calls, check in on this week's poll to let your fellow humans know you've got their backs!
Jeff Sessions (nominated for Attorney General): Jeff Sessions has a long history of racist remarks and is virulently anti-immigrant. Paraphrasing from that article: his only problem with the KKK is that they smoke weed, and he opposes both amnesty for undocumented workers and in fact legal immigration as well, arguing that it depresses wages and swells welfare rolls, neither of which is true. He also doesn’t believe in man-made climate change, and since climate change has a greater impact on the poor and other vulnerable groups than it does on wealthy and privileged groups, climate change is in fact a human rights issue. He also supports banning Muslim immigration to the United States and will almost certainly work to dismantle the progress that has been made under the Obama Administration in almost every area of criminal justice reform and civil rights. This post on The Guardian tracks the questions put to Sessions during his confirmation hearings on Jan. 10-11th and the concerns raised about his record and may be useful to you in identifying the role your senators are playing in the process.
Rex Tillerson (nominated for Secretary of State): Tillerson is not only historically unqualified to be Secretary of State, he also has a history of acting in direct opposition to American foreign policy interests in Iraq and deep, long-term ties to Russian state businesses and political operators, which should be really, really worrying no matter where you fall on the political spectrum. Let’s be really clear: this isn’t “red-baiting”. The reason why everyone reading this should be very concerned about the new administration’s affection for and deference to Russia is because—directly quoting from that NY Times article—”...today’s Russia isn’t Communist, or even leftist; it’s just an authoritarian state, with a cult of personality around its strongman, that showers benefits on an immensely wealthy oligarchy while brutally suppressing opposition and criticism.“ Lest you still believe that Russia is a country that is on the side of the left: Russia has incredibly restrictive laws against LGBTQ people, scores 148 out of 180 in the world in rankings of countries by the degree of freedom afforded to the press, and is currently moving to decriminalize domestic violence. It also directly interfered with our ability to hold a free and fair election, not just via hacking but also manipulating not only Trump but also Jill Stein, because the importance of the third-party vote in taking down Hillary Clinton. Russia is not a friend to American interests (or EU interests, or NATO interests)—but it is a friend to Exxon-Mobile. All of this, particularly when combined with Tillerson’s track record of failing to prioritize American interests, means that his confirmation would directly threaten your rights and the rights of your fellow humans. This post on The Guardian covers some of the key details from his confirmation hearing on Wednesday; their liveblog of the confirmation hearing is much more detailed (recommended) but also covers the Trump press conference, since it was going on at the same time, so some of the details of the confirmation hearing itself are getting buried. (Note: this is probably not an accident.)
Steve Bannon (appointed as Chief Strategist and Chief Counsel): Steve Bannon is a racist, xenophobe, misogynist, and anti-Semite, darling of the KKK, whose only qualification is spreading fake conspiracy news a.k.a. racist propaganda on the internet. He also has extraordinary sway over Donald Trump. Steve Bannon is really, really dangerous. We need to keep him from ever getting to the White House. However, because he’s not being appointed to a position that requires Senate confirmation, when you’re making your calls about Bannon, you basically want to ask your representatives to block other things Trump wants to get done until he fires Bannon. Make it clear to them that Bannon in the White House is an affront to American democracy and American ideals, and we need to give him the boot.
The Affordable Care Act: The Affordable Care Act is historic legislation that brought health insurance to huge swathes of Americans who were either previously unable to afford health insurance or unable to purchase health insurance due to pre-existing conditions (full disclosure: this includes me, personally, because I have migraines; my migraine medication cost also dropped from $76 a pill before I had insurance to $6 a pill with insurance. When I have a migraine and no medication I consistently end up being treated for uncontrolled vomiting in the ER.). It has helped keep people out of poverty and dramatically reduced racial disparities in coverage. The incoming administration wants to dismantle the law, starting with the individual mandate (which is absolutely critical to making the ACA economically viable for insurers); while they ostensibly say they want to replace it with ~something~, in the six years since it passed, they have come up with absolutely fuck all. Both houses of Congress have already passed the legislative first steps to dismantle the ACA--it’s starting! Call your representatives as soon as possible to let them know where you stand and how they can keep your vote the next time they’re up for re-election. You can find out how your representative in the House voted here--notably, nine Republicans crossed the aisle to vote with Democrats against the bill--and how your senators voted here--only Rand Paul crossed the aisle on that one.
A note on protesting amid breaking news: Because I’m drafting most of this a few days before it’ll go live, and because I can’t know when, precisely, you’ll actually make your individual calls, the exact nature of how you protest these appointments and laws may need to change a little bit based on how far the confirmation/legislative process has got by the time you’re calling. Also, I’m going to be copy-pasting a lot of this post to make next week’s post, which will cover a very similar set of tasks, just different people and different topics.
So. If the nominee you’re calling about is still undergoing confirmation hearings, then encourage your senators to rigorously question the nominee on issues critical to protecting the rights of your fellow humans. If the confirmation hearings for that nominee are finished, focus instead on encouraging your senators to vote against the nominee’s confirmation. If the confirmation has already gone through, either thank or criticize your senator’s vote, depending on which way they voted; and in any case make it clear to them that you continue to watch their voting behavior to see whether or not they will have your vote in 2018 (or 2020, or 2022--it’s worth also taking a second to check when your particular senators will next come up for re-election, if you don’t know off-hand, because of the Senate’s weird six-year terms. Senators up for re-election in 2018 are listed here. Senators up for re-election in 2020 are listed here. Senators up for re-election in 2022 are listed here.).
Similarly, when you’re calling about legislative priorities, depending on what has happened around that legislative issue since this post went live, you will either be urging your representatives to vote a particular way; or be thanking or criticizing their vote, depending on which way they voted, and making it clear to them that you continue to watch their voting behavior to see whether or not they will have your vote in 2018 (or 2020, or 2022).
Also, when you call your congressperson in the House about Cabinet appointments, since the House doesn’t vote on Cabinet appointments, just encourage your House representative to go on-record as opposing the nomination. The goal here is to make a lot of noise, and also to try and muster the political left to come together and resist the incoming administration with full-throated determination and conviction.
Anyway, to handle how fast this is moving, I recommend that you plan on searching a reputable news source, like The Guardian, shortly before you make your calls, for any breaking-news updates on the confirmation process that may require you to tweak your scripts.
How to Write Your Scripts (excerpted from 5M4F-5):
The basic phone script for calling your representatives goes something like so:
Hi, {can I ask who I’m speaking to? <, if they don’t say when they pick up>} [Jot their name down.] Hi, <their name>. My name is <your name> and I’m one of <your representative’s name>’s constituents in <where you live>. I wanted to let <your representative’s name> know that I strongly <support | oppose> <the thing you’re calling about>, because <succinct explanation of reason why you’re calling>. Is <your representative’s name> planning to <do the thing you want>?
Then you have to plan for a few different responses:
They’re with you: Thank you. Could you please let <appropriate pronoun> know that <expression of gratitude> and <indication that you will continue to watch your representative’s behavior and hold them accountable>?
They’re neutral: This subject is very important to me because <longer, more in-depth and emotive reason why you’re calling>. I would very much appreciate it if you could let <your representative’s name> know that I feel very strongly about this and would really encourage <appropriate pronoun> to <do the thing you want>. Is there any way I could follow up with you or <appropriate pronoun> later?
They oppose you: This subject is very important to me because <longer, more in-depth and emotive reason why you’re calling>. Can I ask why <your representative’s name> is <not doing the thing you want>? [Let them give you a reason, and write it down.] Okay, thank you. I understand <appropriate pronoun> concerns, but as one of <your representative’s name>’s voting constituents, I would really appreciate it if <appropriate pronoun> revisited <appropriate pronoun> decision because <alternate succinct explanation of reason why you’re calling>. Is there any way I could follow up with you or <appropriate pronoun> later?
<expression of gratitude>! <polite send-off>!
I want to point out that you probably don’t actually really need to plan for all of these responses. You can probably make a pretty good guess where your representative stands based on their party affiliation. However, especially if your representatives are moderates and often vote across the aisle, it’s not a bad idea to spend a little time planning for all three cases, because then your behind is covered, and you can recycle this language over and over on later calls, to different representatives. And yes: we will be calling other representatives.
This is the sample script that I wrote back in November, on a different issue and to Barbara Boxer, who has been replaced by Kamala Harris, but it gives you an idea how the Mad-Libs-filling process works:
Hi, {can I ask who I’m speaking to? <, if they don’t say when they pick up>} [Jot their name down.] Hi, <their name>. My name is <Ginny Washington>, and I’m one of <Senator Boxer>’s constituents in <West Hollywood>. I wanted to let <Senator Boxer> know that I strongly <support> <her resolution to amend the Constitution to eliminate the Electoral College>, because <I think every American’s vote should count equally>. {I just wanted to thank her for all her hard work on behalf of the principles of equal representation and equal protection under the law.}
<Thank you so much for your time>! <Have a nice day>!
If you can’t make calls: I recommended before that if you can’t make calls, you copy down snail mail addresses so you can send snail mail letters, and that you grab an email address or online contact link no matter what. Calls are the most effective, if you can make them, but please, do send snail mail letters if you can’t, or an email if you also can’t swing a stamp or get to a post office. You can use the script above as a template for your letter, but you’re probably going to want to default to assuming that your representative opposes you, and you’ll have to of course make it sound like a letter and not a phone convo.
If you care about correct forms of address: weirdly, because these things are super arcane, technically the correct way to address your senator or representative is still “The Honorable <whoever>”, as in, “The Honorable Barbara Boxer.” That goes on the envelope. You can then write “Dear Mr./Mrs./Ms. <whoever>” as your salutation.

The Yankees and the 2018-19 Offseason Calendar
Fan Confidence Poll: October 29th, 2018
(AP Photo/Seth Wenig)
Last night the Red Sox clinched the 2018 World Series championship with a Game Five win over the Dodgers. That is now four titles in the last 15 years for the BoSox after zero titles in their previous 86 years. The Dodgers are still looking for their first championship since 1988.
Anyway, now that the World Series and the 2018 baseball season are over, the 2018-19 offseason is officially underway. There are a ton of important dates and deadlines coming up these next few weeks, plus some not so important ones as well. Here is the offseason calendar and what each of these dates means for the Yankees.
Today, October 29th: The start of free agency, kinda As of 9am ET today, all eligible players became free agents. Players used to have to file for free agency, which was a waste of everyone’s time, but now it happens automatically. Eight Yankees became free agents this morning: Zach Britton, J.A. Happ, Adeiny Hechavarria, Lance Lynn, Andrew McCutchen, David Robertson, CC Sabathia, and Neil Walker. They aren’t able to sign with new teams just yet, but they are free agents. There are now 32 players on the 40-man roster.
Wednesday, October 31st: Option decisions due Generally speaking, all option decisions are due three days after the end of the World Series. Some contract stipulate other dates — my go-to example is the Phillies having to making a decision about their 2011 club option for Jimmy Rollins following the end of the 2009 World Series — but three days after the World Series is most common. I should note Masahiro Tanaka announced he wouldn’t opt-out a day before the deadline last year. Announcements could come earlier.
The Yankees have one option decision this offseason: Brett Gardner. They hold a $12.5M club option for Gardner next season with a $2M buyout. It is a net $10.5M decision. If they decline the option, Gardner gets his $2M and becomes a free agent. If they pick it up, he’s back next season with a $12.5 salary. My guess is the Yankees will decline the option and look to re-sign Gardner at a lower salary to play a more part-time/platoon role. We’ll see.
Friday, November 2nd: Qualifying offer and disabled list activation deadline The qualifying offer has been set at $17.9M this offseason and the Yankees only have two free agents eligible for it: Sabathia and, if his option is declined, Gardner. None of the other free agents are eligible for various reasons. The Yankees won’t make either Sabathia or Gardner the qualifying offer. They’d both accept it in a heartbeat. Sabathia could come back at something similar to his $10M salary this year. The Yankees wouldn’t decline Gardner’s $12.5M option only to turn around and give him the $17.9M qualifying offer, you know?
Also by this date, all players must be activated off the 60-day disabled list. The Yankees have four players on the 60-day DL: Ben Heller (Tommy John surgery), Jordan Montgomery (Tommy John surgery), Jacoby Ellsbury (hip surgery), and Clint Frazier (post-concussion migraines). Once these guys are activated, the Yankees will go from 32 players on the 40-man roster to 36 players on the 40-man roster. It’ll be 35 if Gardner’s option is declined.
Saturday, November 3rd: The start of free agency, for real The five-day exclusive negotiating period ends this coming Saturday and free agency will officially begin. Saturday is when free agents are truly free to negotiate and sign with any team. Keep in mind MLB free agency is a marathon, not a sprint. There typically is not a rash of signings on Day One. I do think we’ll see some second and third (and fourth and fifth) tier free agents sign earlier than usual after what happened with free agency last winter — Eduardo Escobar already re-signed with the D’Backs — but probably not this early.
Sunday, November 4th: Gold Glove winners announced The Yankees have three Gold Glove finalists this year: Gardner in left field, Tanaka at pitcher, and Aaron Judge in right field. I can’t see Judge beating out Mookie Betts. Gardner and Tanaka could win though. The last Yankee to win a Gold Glove was Gardner in 2016. The last time the Yankees had multiple Gold Glove winners in one season was 2012 with Mark Teixeira and Robinson Cano. The Gold Glove winners will be announced during a live ESPN broadcast at 9pm ET. I guess MLB doesn’t want anyone watching.
Sunday, November 5th: Awards finalists announced MLB has been announcing three finalists for each of the four major awards (Manager of the Year, Rookie of the Year, Cy Young, MVP) for a few years now. They’re trying to generate some buzz during a slow time of the year. Judge’s injury takes him out of the AL MVP race and Luis Severino’s second half fade takes him out of the AL Cy Young race. I can’t see Aaron Boone finishing in the top three of the Manager of the Year voting either. Count on both Miguel Andujar and Gleyber Torres being among the three Rookie of the Year finalists though. It’ll be surprised if it’s not those two and Shohei Ohtani. The awards finalists will be announced during a live MLB Network broadcast at 6pm ET.
Tuesday, November 6th to Thursday, November 8th: GM meetings in San Diego Carlsbad, actually, but close enough. The GM meetings typically cover off-the-field stuff. I suspect improper use of electronics (sign stealing, etc.) will be a hot topic this year after the Astros were caught red-handed during the postseason. (Their excuse was they were monitoring their opponents electronically to make sure they weren’t using electronics improperly. Come on.)
Off-the-field matters are usually the focus here, but, whenever you put all 30 GMs together in one spot, deals can and do happen. The John Ryan Murphy-for-Aaron Hicks trade went down at the GM meetings. The groundwork for the three-team trade that brought Curtis Granderson to the Yankees was laid at the GM meetings way back in the day. Even if some deals aren’t completed at the GM meetings, they will surely be discussed, and possibly revisited and completed at a later date.
Thursday, November 8th: Silver Sluggers announced If Silver Sluggers are your thing, this is the date for you. Judge’s injury and Gary Sanchez’s poor year mean the Yankees don’t have a serious Silver Slugger candidate this year.
Thursday, November 8th to Thursday, November 15th: MLB Japan All-Star Series As they do every few offseasons, MLB is sending a team of All-Stars (“All-Stars”) to Japan to play a series of exhibition games against Nippon Pro Baseball All-Stars. So far seven players have committed to the event: Ronald Acuna Jr., Rhys Hoskins, Yadier Molina, Carlos Santana, Eugenio Suarez, Chris Taylor, and Christian Yelich. Don Mattingly will manage. Here are the game dates and locations:
November 8th to 11th: Tokyo
November 13th: Hiroshima
November 14th and 15th: Nagoya
I have to think MLB would love to get a Yankee on the roster. The Yankees are the sport’s most recognizable team and they’d help create buzz. Didi Gregorius would’ve been perfect for this event. He’s got a great personality and he spends every offseason traveling and making fun videos. Didi would’ve been great. Too bad he got hurt.
From MLB’s perspective, Judge would be ideal here, though he had the wrist injury in the second half may not want to push it. Perhaps MLB could convince Giancarlo Stanton? Eh. The rest of the roster will be announced sometime soon. I mean, this thing starts next week, so it has to be soon. The last Yankee to participate in the MLB Japan All-Star Series was Mike Myers in 2006. For real. Jason Giambi and Bernie Williams were part of the 2002 team. These games will all be televised live on MLB Network.
Update: The MLB roster was announced this morning. It includes no Yankees. So much for that.
Monday, November 12th: Qualifying offer decision deadline Players used to get seven days to decide whether to accept or reject the qualifying offer. Now they get ten. How very kind of the owners to give players that after receiving massive luxury tax concessions from the MLBPA. Anyway, the extra three days give these free agents a little extra time to shop around for a deal before taking or declining the qualifying offer. Again, the Yankees don’t have any qualifying offer candidates this year. This deadline means nothing to them. They’ll just monitor who rejects the qualifying offer and is attached to draft pick compensation. (The Yankees will have to give up their second highest draft pick and $500,000 in international bonus money each time they sign a qualified free agent this winter.)
Monday, November 12th to Thursday, November 15th: Major award winners announced It Manager of the Year on Monday, Rookie of the Year on Tuesday, Cy Young on Wednesday, and MVP on Thursday. Andujar and Torres both have a chance to be named Rookie of the Year. Maybe they’ll tie in the voting and be named co-Rookies of the Year! That’d be neat. But yeah, Ohtani’s gonna win. Sorry folks. All the awards are announced live during an MLB Network broadcast.
Andujar and Torres. (Presswire)
Wednesday, November 14th to Thursday, November 15th: Owners meetings in Atlanta A bunch of rich guys get together to talk about how rich they are and figure out ways to get even richer. They squeeze in some baseball talk if time allows. Nothing exciting happens here from a hot stove perspective, usually.
Tuesday, November 20th: Rule 5 Draft protection deadline The Yankees got a head start on their Rule 5 Draft protection this year when they called up Chance Adams, Justus Sheffield, and Stephen Tarpley during the season. Also, Rule 5 Draft eligible prospects Cody Carroll, Juan De Paula, Josh Rogers, and Dillon Tate were traded away at the deadline.
Generally speaking, college players drafted no later than 2015 and high school players drafted no later than 2014 are Rule 5 Draft eligible this winter, as are international free agents signed no later than 2014. Here are the Yankees’ notable Rule 5 Draft eligible prospects:
Catchers: Jason Lopez
Infielders: Diego Castillo, Dermis Garcia, Kyle Holder, Hoy Jun Park, Brandon Wagner
Outfielders: Trey Amburgey, Pablo Olivares
Pitchers: Nick Green, James Reeves, Erik Swanson
The Yankees will have four open 40-man roster spots once free agents are removed from the roster and 60-day DL guys are activated. It’ll be five spots if Gardner’s option is declined. I think Holder and Swanson are locks to be added to the 40-man with Amburgey, Green, and Wagner on the bubble. There’s always a chance for a surprise 40-man roster addition too, like Jonathan Loaisiga last year. He was much more highly regarded than I know I realized.
Keep in mind the Yankees can’t just load up their 40-man roster with Rule 5 Draft prospects. They have eight players becoming free agents, right? Well, those eight players have to be replaced, so those roster spots will be needed.
Monday, November 26th to Thursday, November 29th: MLBPA executive board meeting in Dallas The MLBPA is preparing for a labor war. The union made two high profile additions in recent weeks, which suggests they’re ready to dig in and make some demands in the next round of Collective Bargaining Agreement talks. Fortunately the current CBA does not expire until December 2021, so a work stoppage is not imminent. But this is the MLBPA’s first executive board meeting since the free agent hell of last offseason. Their CBA planning starts in earnest here.
Friday, November 30th: Non-tender deadline The non-tender deadline is usually December 2nd, but December 2nd is a Sunday this year, so MLB moved it up to the prior business day. On this date teams have to tender their pre-arbitration and arbitration-eligible players a contract for the 2019 season. They don’t have to sign them, they just have to make a contract offer. Players who don’t receive a contract offer become free agents. They are considered … wait for it … non-tendered.
The Yankees could be in for an interesting non-tender deadline. Would they non-tender Didi Gregorius rather than pay him a projected $12.4M to rehab from Tommy John surgery next year, only to have him become a free agent after the season? Would they non-tender Sonny Gray and his projected $9.1M salary if they can’t find a trade partner? What about Tommy Kahnle? Is he so far gone that the Yankees dump him and his $1.5M projected salary?
Aside from those guys, I think the Yankees might try the non-tender/re-sign trick with Heller. They’ve non-tendered young players coming off injury and re-signed them to a minor league contract several times in the past, most notably with Domingo German and Vicente Campos. Heller’s rehabbing from Tommy John surgery and the non-tender is a way to get him off the 40-man roster and keep him in the organization without exposing him to waivers.
Monday, December 9th to Thursday, December 13th: Winter Meetings in Las Vegas The busiest week of the offseason, historically. This is when most major free agent signings and trades will take place. That was the case for years and years and years. How will things play out this offseason? After last winter, I could see teams waiting out free agents because it proved to be so effective last year. There were some great bargains to be had in January and February. In all likelihood the Winter Meetings will be packed with hot stove action (if not trades and signings, then at least rumors) because the Winter Meetings are always packed with hot stove action. Should be fun.
Monday, December 9th: Hall of Fame Today’s Game committee announcement The Hall of Fame replaced the old Veterans Committee with four “eras” committees a few years back: Early Baseball (pre-1950), Golden Days (1950-69), Modern Baseball (1970-87), and Today’s Game (1988 to present). The committees meet every few years in irregular intervals to vote on players who fell off the BBWAA ballot, and this winter the Today’s Game committee is up. It’s hard to know who will and who won’t be on the ballot, but the folks at Hall of Stats came up with some names. Former Yankees David Cone and Jimmy Key are among them.
Thursday, December 13th: Rule 5 Draft As a reminder, players selected in the Rule 5 Draft must remain on their new team’s 25-man big league roster all next season, or be placed on waivers and offered back to their original team. The Yankees had multiple players selected in each of the last three Rule 5 Drafts and one only (Luis Torrens with the Padres last year) stuck. Even with an underwhelming crop of Rule 5 Draft eligible prospects this winter, it wouldn’t surprise me if the Yankees have multiple players selected again. Upper level bullpen arms like Joe Harvey and Raynel Espinal could interest a team enough to get a Spring Training look.
The Yankees have not made a Rule 5 Draft pick since taking Cesar Cabral and Brad Meyers in 2011. Depending on their 40-man roster situation offseason, I think the chances of the Yankees making a Rule 5 Draft pick this year are better than they have been in years. Maybe they’ll look for a live-armed last guy in the bullpen type or a corner infielder to compete with Luke Voit and Greg Bird at first base in Spring Training. Probably not, but maybe!
Friday, January 11th: Deadline for teams and players to submit salary arbitration figures The player files what he believes he should be paid in 2019 and the team files what they believe the player should be paid in 2019. It’s important to note the two sides could still agree to a contract of any size after filing salary arbitration figures. Generally speaking, most arbitration-eligible players sign before the filing deadline. The Yankees signed all their arbitration-eligibles before the filing deadline last offseason. The same will probably happen this year too. That’s usually how it goes.
Mid-January: BBWAA Hall of Fame class announced Voting results for the 2019 Hall of Fame class will be announced sometime in January. This is a big Hall of Fame year. Know why? Because Mariano Rivera is eligible. He’ll be on the Hall of Fame ballot for the first time this year. Rivera’s going to get voted in, of course, I just wouldn’t expect it to be unanimous. There are 400-something ballots cast each year and inevitably one of them will exclude Rivera. That’s just the way these things go.

Andy Pettitte joins the Hall of Fame ballot this year as well, though I think he’s a borderline candidate at best. He’ll clear the 5% threshold to remain on the ballot next year but I don’t see him coming close to the 75% needed for induction. Former Yankees Roger Clemens (7th year), Mike Mussina (6th), and Gary Sheffield (5th) return on the ballot. I hope Mussina gets in. His voting percentage has increased from 20.3% to 24.6% to 43.0% to 51.8% to 63.5% in his five years on the ballot. Hopefully he gets over the 75% threshold this year. Here’s the full Hall of Fame ballot.
Friday, February 1st to Wednesday, February 20th: Arbitration hearings The Yankees went to what is now a rather infamous arbitration hearing with Dellin Betances two years ago. Prior to that they hadn’t gone to an arbitration hearing since beating Chien-Ming Wang in 2008. Lots of teams these days are “file-and-trial” clubs, meaning they cut off contract talks after filing salary figures and go to a hearing. That’s designed to put pressure on the player. I don’t think the Yankees are a file-and-trial team though. They signed Aroldis Chapman and Nathan Eovaldi after the filing deadline but before a hearing in 2016. Seems Betances was a special case because the two sides were far apart. As always, I’d bet against a hearing. They’re uncommon and both sides try to avoid them.
Saturday, February 23rd: Grapefruit League play begins The Yankees open their 32-game exhibition schedule with a road game against the (groan) defending World Series champion Red Sox. They play their spring home opener two days later against the Blue Jays in Tampa. The Yankees have not yet announced their reporting dates (those are usually announced in mid-November), but, based on the last few years, pitchers and catchers will report ten days before the Grapefruit League opener (Wednesday, February 13th) and position players will report six days before the Grapefruit League opener (Sunday, February 17th).
Thursday, March 28th: Opening Day! The 2019 regular season beings on March 28th — actually, it begins March 20th in Tokyo, where the Athletics and Mariners are scheduled to play their first two games of the season — and the Yankees will be at home to take on the Orioles. The home opener was snowed out last year and twice in the last three years. I really hope that doesn’t happen again.
