My Reincarnation Isekai Villainess Rec List

So. I’ve gone and found myself in Isekai/Reincarnation/Villainess hell. For those who don’t know Isekai is a genre in which character(s) are transported to a different world. Initially you might be thinking “oh, she’s gonna share a both a series like Sword Art Online.” Oh no. You have underestimated the amount of taste I have. By which I mean I have none but that SOA is a taste I’m not here for.

Now a very specific sub-genre of that is the reincarnation one, particularly in which a character is reborn as a character from one of their favorite books or games from their previous, modern life. An even more specific sub-genre of that one is in which the MC is reborn as a villainess from that book or game, thus creating a bit of a challenge as villainesses usually are destined to die in the source material.

So! Here are my favorites, many of which are all 3 but some combine one or two of the above tropes. It’s my list so I do what I want. And most of my faves have a shojo genre tag, or at least a romance tag, because that’s where all the good stuff is:

Survive as the Hero’s Wife by Nokki

Canaria is reincarnated as the villainess of a popular cliche novel. Based on the novel, she is destined to be executed but can she prevent this from happening before it’s too late?

Why *I* like it: So this one was the one that really got me into the villainess reincarnation isekai genre! And it remains the top of my list. The huge draw for me in this one is that I actually really like the main couple! Like not even just lukewarm, I really like it! I’d read fic for it, if that existed. A lot of the villainess genre tend to portray the original heroine as vapid, unworthy of their status of heroine, or the actual villainess but in this case Gracie just turns out to be just an amazing strong woman who doesn’t actually need a man. (In fact I ship the three together full stop tbh lol). In fact, it’s a subplot that Gracie realizes (because of MC’s words) that if she wants to inherit her father’s title even though the law says a woman cannot... That she just should strive to change the law rather than be a tool with no use outside of marriage. And not to spoil anything, but she will definitely do just that.

And since I’m mainly finishing the rough draft of this list out of absolute RAGE at being made fun of for being into this genre.... A compilation of the main love interest, Cesar, because he’s absolutely beautiful. Look at those eyes! He’s such a great example of the sullen, dark love interest because he’s not those things when he’s with his wife, the MC!!! He’s so soft for her. And the whole point is that the love interest shows a different side to their lover right??

And like the great thing is Canaria, the MC, totally doesn’t notice for the longest time. She read the novel in her previous life so she’s *convinced* that one day Cesar will fall for the novel’s original leading woman, and she makes plans accordingly throughout their early days of their marriage. She completely hadn’t thought about the fact that since she’s not being a villainess this time around and not abusing him and everyone around her, and makes friends with Cesar... Like of course the course of events change. It utterly baffles Cesar when his wife keeps bringing up divorce because he’s so completely in love with her and you just gotta eat that shit up with a spoon because it’s so good and perfect drama but also funny.

There’s even a Halloween chapter where everyone wears costumes and basically I believe I was pandered to specifically.

Tbh, the arc going atm is sorta losing my interest but that’s because there’s political intrigue and I’m like just here for the romance lmao. So someone looking for substance and not just fluff might be more pleased than I. But it’s still on-going so. It’s just all in all a fun and great introduction to the genre imo.

I Reincarnated into an Otome Game as a Villainess With Only Destruction Flags by Hidaka Nami (Art) and Yamaguchi Satoru (Story)

Eight-year-old Katarina Claes is the only daughter of a duke, living her life peacefully and without incident until she hits her head on a rock... and then remembers that she is not actually the duke's daughter. She used to be an otaku who died on her way to school after spending the entire previous night playing Fortune Lover, her favorite otome game. After noticing that her current surroundings seem oddly familiar, she is shocked to discover that she has been reincarnated into the world of Fortune Lover as the villainess.

The villainess in the game usually winds up dead or exiled, so Katarina decides to use her knowledge of the game and its routes to avoid any bad situations. But is it even possible for the villainess to reach a good ending?

Why *I* like it: Ok ok ok, lol. So this one is probably one of the most well-known of the villainess reincarnation isekai genre atm! Particularly because of the anime currently running. And for good reason... the MC is so brilliantly stupid in the best of ways. While she plots on how to escape her fate of being killed or exiled by learning to sword fight and how to garden, she’s more or less seduced every capture target in this dating game... AND all the female rivals to boot AND heroine. The thing is that she is completely unaware and continues training for the day she is inevitably killed or exiled, as per the game’s original ending.

It’s just a silly, fun series and all the women’s feelings for her are taken about as seriously as all the guys’... Which isn’t much because absolutely no one really has a chance of getting this woman to understand they are all madly in love with her. Not a series to take seriously which is part of it’s charm, but it retains a lot of heart especially when it comes to the MC Katarina (affectionally called Bakarina by fandom) remembering her friend and family from her past life.

This series also has a manga spin-off about what if she’d been reincarnated while already in high school and bullying the heroine instead of a child... So basically she’s in hard mode, and yet she still succeeds in getting even more people into her little harem she has for herself.

Whether you chose to watch the anime or the manga (or the LN, which I haven’t got to) you can’t go wrong.

It Seems Like I Got Reincarnated Into The World of a Yandere Otome Game by Hanaki, Momiji (Story) and Setsuri (Art)

As a precocious child, Lycoris suffers from a strange sense of deja vu. On the day her father told her about her fiancé, she realizes that her fiancé was a character from an otome game she once played in a previous life.

“I am the heroine’s rival from the game?

And in the bad ending, I get stabbed to death?

What a joke.”

A story in which the protagonist is determined to avoid a yandere situation.

Why *I* like it: Hear me out! I know what you’re thinking... Yanderes??? But here’s the thing... Just by the MC being kind and getting 2 of the “yandere” characters out of abusive environments, they no longer end up as yanderes as they grow up. They aren’t those tropes any more! While the characters remain protective, they aren’t possessive and are happy to see MC branch out, if a little lonely. And the yandere that remain aren’t treated as hot, but annoying. So like sorry to disappoint if you think yanderes are hot but this isn’t the series for you.

Additionally, unlike other series of this trope, the MC is pretty quick to realize she just needs to trust her lover, that he will not turn on her and kill her as he did in the game nor will he fall for the heroine instead of her. It’s somewhat refreshing, as a huge part of the trope is the MC typically doesn’t realize until it’s spelled out that by not acting as a villain.... the rest of the characters don’t want to harm them... And might even have fallen in love with them.

Another fun aspect is how MC doesn’t remember things immediately, but only remembers things from her past life (and of how the game went) until it comes up. Additionally, she wonders some interesting things that aren’t even mentioned in other series like... What if she’s destined to be exactly like the game character? Will she be forced to be exactly like her? It’s a fun exploration of some common reincarnation isekai villainess tropes if you have experience with the genre!

Ascendance of a Bookworm by Shiina You (Art) and Kazuki Miya (Story)

A book-loving student and soon to be librarian ends up crushed to death by the pile of books during an earthquakes and wakes up as a five year old girl named Main in another world where books are scarce only available to the elite. Main, retaining her memories of her past life, decides to create and print her own books so she can read again.

Why *I* like it: So here is we depart from solely the villainess sub-genre (but only briefly!) Because there is another sub-genre of reincarnation isekai and that’s in which the MC uses the things they learned on our planet earth to re-invent things like shampoo and the printing press. And no other isekai does it better than Ascendance of a Bookworm imo. Main’s love for books leads her to recreating things she took for granted on Earth and starts selling them from a young age... Which might just end up saving her life as she ends up having a terminal disease that ordinarily she’d only be able to survive by being a slave to a noble... But by selling her products she has a chance to save herself!!! And the products she creates are available to commoners, not just the nobles who of course make it impossible for the poor to have nice things.

Additionally, a majority of this trope centers around nobles and royalty (and all the best ones are historical settings)... The fun thing about this one is that it actually centers around a povert stricken family. It’s a good break from the noble hierarchy within most isekai.

Finally, this series is the one that hits most closely to my feelings if I were to be reincarnated in another world... Which is to cry at the realization that I will never finish any of the on-going books and manga I had going on. That’s absolute hell, I don’t know how any of these MCs deal!! ;_;

btw there is an anime and manga both. Also LN but tbh almost all of these have LN.

Isekai Omotenashi Gohan by Shinobumaru (Story) and Medamayaki (Art)

Akane, an ordinary office lady, gets summoned to a different world along with her younger sister and pet dog. There, she ends up treating rare guests one after another with hospitality through meals!! Can she satisfy the citizens of a different world with home cooking...?!

Why *I* like it: Continuing our brief deviation from the villainess trope, Isekai Omotenashi Gohan is my favorite example of another subgenre of isekai - one without reincarnation - but one in which a “hero” is transmigrated to another world to save it... The problem? Oppsie, 2 people were taken. Sometimes in this sub-genre there is a question who the true savior is but in Isekai Omotenashi Gohan’s case they figure that out pretty quickly. They quickly figure out the MC’s younger sister is the savior. At first the older sister (Akane) is set aside as unimportant... But her sister only wants to eat the food her sister makes and it quickly becomes obvious that Akane’s role is important.

Akane makes lots of allies and friends by sharing the food from Japan and of course has a very subtle romance going on with her guard. But honestly I just enjoy this series as a person that likes food manga, like that’s it lmao, so much so that don’t be surprised when I make a best food manga list and yeah sorry Food Wars won’t be on it.

But fr, even if you don’t love the food manga genre try it!! It’s a sweet series and mixes domestic with fantasy in a great way. Plus only a few series are complete, with the rest being on-going, so if you want a complete and finished series try this one!

The Duke's Fiancee, Why She Had to Go to the Duke by Milcha (Story) and Golae (Art)

When Park Eunha dies in modern-day Korea, she awakens in the body of Raeliana McMillan, the eldest daughter of a nouveaux riche baron. However, this is no ordinary world; it's the exact same one as a novel she once read. Beloved by her family, it would seem as though she is in a fairy tale. But Raeliana is far from the main character—she is a mere plot device, whose murder at the hands of her fiancé instigates the entire story.

Raeliana has no intention to accept her fate quietly. She sets her eyes on someone in a position of great power—the vieux riche male protagonist Duke Noah Volstaire Wynknight—aiming to completely change the original story. Using her knowledge of future events, Raeliana offers information to Noah on the condition that he acts as her fake fiancé, but the Duke's two-faced nature throws a wrench in her plans!

Why *I* like it: This one is a fun one!! It really plays with different concepts that don’t often get explored in reincarnation isekai like where did the original consciousness of the character the MC became go??? Because MC only remembers her life on earth and is otherwise treated as though she has amnesia.... But is it amnesia? Is she another person entirely?

Also the humor is... great. Listen I refuse to give the best joke in the series just to make you read it but... the series is worth it just for this running joke.

Of course the romance is good too. The dude is kinda an asshole but she gives as good as he dishes out and it quickly becomes flirting anyway. I don’t want to say too much and give any thing away... but s’good!

Who Made Me a Princess? by Plutus (Story) and Spoon (Art)

The beautiful Athanasia was killed at the hands of her own biological father, Claude de Alger Obelia, the cold-blooded emperor! It’s just a silly bedtime story… until one woman wakes up to suddenly find she’s become that unfortunate princess! She needs a plan to survive her doomed fate, and time is running out. Will she go with Plan A, live as quietly as possible without being noticed by the infamous emperor? Plan B, collect enough money to escape the palace? Or will she be stuck with Plan C, sweet-talking her way into her father’s good graces?!

Why *I* like it: Ok, big sigh. How do I explain the pull ‘Who Made Me A Princess?’ has on me? Now a lot of the pull for many people is how cute the budding father daughter relationship the MC (Athy) has with her dad. But like, her dad is the worst and I want to fight him. On the other hand, most of the fandom hates Jeanette, the MC’s sister who has done literally nothing wrong except make everyone around her miserable but it’s not her fault ok, and I’ll fight the entire fandom in her honor. So it pains me to rec this series knowing that more than likely anyone who picks up this series because of me might have Wrong Opinions and I invite you to tell me just so I can shake my head about another wrong person existing in this world.

Never the less, this series is very cute! All the other series I have recced had the MC remember their past life at early childhood at the earliest, if not as a teenager. Athy? She has the misfortune to remember as a *baby* and it’s exactly as hellish as it sounds for an adult to be stuck growing up as a baby and suffer through the absolute embarrassment of having people feed and wipe her ass.

The MC was an orphan in her previous life and the book that she wakes up in is a shitty book even by her standards but then she really only skimmed it it sounds like that’s what interests me. As Athy makes changes to the original events of the novel and depth is added to the world, I start to wonder if the added depth was in the original novel or if the world had to add its own depth to stand as an actual lived in world?

Additionally, since I made the cover image Athy and her dad you might as well see her with her 2 love interests (and Jeanette!). People need to know who to ship, I get it.

Also I need a moment to appreciate, up close, the beauty of Athy’s eyes. So gorgeous.

Living as the Tyrant’s Older Sister by Aperta (Story) and Chyobab (Art)

When I opened my eyes, I was inside a fantasy novel world! The beauty I see in front of the mirror is the future tyrant’s older sister, Alicia! She’s not even a protagonist or an antagonist, but a character that doesn’t appear much and gets beheaded by the (upcoming) tyrant little brother. My life is all about escaping that fate from the novel. In the end, I seduced the male lead’s merchant friend who also doesn’t appear much and was about to leave the country with him. How-e-ver. The face of the man who spent the night with me was extraordinary, and was the male lead himself!

Why *I* like it: ……………...keke. Ok so this one is one I like just for the laughs. The love interest is an arrogant asshole, but see… The important detail the summary leaves out is that the MC’s… cousin (?) wrote the book that she woke up in! Moreover she’s the one that told her cousin to change the MC of her novel and make him good at everything and also make him a freak in the sack. Like who is really at fault here??? Lmao. Especially when she goes out intending to seduce a character she remembers being rich from the novel and accidentally bags the MC from the novel, aka the dude who kills her and her brother in the original novel.

In seriousness though, it really is funny. The facial expressions of the MC is just… chefs kiss. She’s got a pretty face but then she makes all these goof ass faces and I love it. If you need any more reason to at least give it a go, just know that at one point the male lead comes to check on her, expecting to find her crying and instead…. Walks in just as she screams FUCK at the top of her lungs and then begins a tirade of very creative curses including "Bitch oompa loompa ass bitch" which how can you not love her? Anyway the face the male lead makes after that has me maintaining that’s the moment he fell in love with her lmao.. but this is not Confirmed so it’s not a spoiler!!

EDIT: as of August 2020, I’ve since dropped this series. It remains on the list since I’d still rec it to people looking for a laugh.

Seduce the Villain’s Father by bia and dalseul

Upon opening my eyes after a bus accident, I found myself in the fantasy world of a webnovel I enjoyed reading... the only catch is, I reincarnated 20 years before the novel begins! Reborn as Princess Yerenica of the small Lebovny kingdom, I'm determined to change the future in order to prevent the series of unfortunate events that will soon occur!

Why *I* like it: How many times have you yourself had a suuuuuper side character be your favorite in a series and be depressed to see them done dirty? Well MC has a chance to fix that, to save a character that basically one appeared in prologue and basically prevent the birth of the villain character that later kills his own father… by seducing his dad, before he can marry the villainess!!

Yerenica is just adorable in her attempts to thwart the original novel. And like, I have to give her lots of respect for seeing the villainess character and having herself a good moment where she had to consider seducing her instead lmao. She knows when to let well enough alone though so she immediately boards back on the dad train, much to his chagrin because she keeps calling him father……………….. Even though he’s like…. Not a dad yet.

The characters are still relatively early on in their romance, but I have high hopes for it yet!

Edit: As of August 2020, I’ve dropped this series. It remains on this list because I think it’s a cute series and I think anyone who feels really strongly about the main couple will enjoy it.

Death Is the Only Ending For The Villainess by Gwon Gyeoeul and SUOL

Penelope Eckart reincarnated as the adopted daughter of Duke Eckart and the villainess of a reverse harem dating sim. The problem is, she entered the game at its hardest difficulty, and no matter what she does, death awaits her at every ending! Before the "real daughter" of Duke Eckart appears, she must choose one of the male leads and reach a happy ending in order to survive. But the two brothers always pick a fight with her over every little thing, as well as a crazy crown prince, whose routes all lead to death. There's even a magician who's enamoured with the female lead, and a loyal slave knight! But somehow, the favourability meters of the male leads increase the more she crosses the line with them!

Why *I* like it: So this one is another relatively new one added to my list, but it’s shot high up rather quickly!! The other otome game isekai’s that I have on my list are just like the real world, but the interesting thing about this one, is that it also retains otome game mechanics such as she can see the love interests love meter and also she can chose to use the video game script choices to reply to the characters, in the hopes of raising their love meter. This adds challenge, since she knows that if she gets any of the dudes to -10 she’ll be killed even as she sort of wonders if she truly would die or wake back up in reality.

What’s interesting also is that while she is the villainess character in the game… It ends up that the character was actually abused for years and that her title as a villain is unfair and that the game can be played as the villainess as even a player as a ‘hard’ mode compared to the heroine character. It’s up to her to turn things around and it’s actually a fun take on the villainess genre. I’m really looking forward to how things proceed even as my fears about which dude she’ll end up with continue to increase.

Finally, another layer I enjoy is that the MC lead a similar life in her previous life. She’d only just escape her own abusive family before she’d ended up here and MC just desperately wants to escape once again… using any means necessary.

The Villainess Reverses the Hourglass by SanSobe (story) and Ant Studio (art)

With the marriage of her prostitute mother to the Count, Aria’s status in society skyrocketed immediately. After leading a life of luxury, Aria unfairly meets death because of her sister Mielle’s schemes. And right before she dies, she sees an hourglass fall as if it were a fantasy. And just like that, she was miraculously brought back to the past.

“I want to become a very elegant person, just like my sister, Mielle.”

In order to face the villainess, she must become an even more wicked villainess. This was the new path Aria chose to take revenge on Mielle who murdered both her and her mother.

Why *I* like it: If you thought that this list might be in descending order, guess again! This one is one of my favorites. Now this one lacks isekai, but is a reincarnation of a villainess!! Rather the MC was an absolute horrible person in her past life, but finds out at the last minute that her ~pure~ sister had been leading her by nose into acting like a brat just seconds before she is executed. Now that she has a second chance, she’ll be a proper villainess and turn the tables on her sister.

In her last life, Aria never bothered educating herself so now that she’s a teenager again she actually has to learn things again (it’s not just like she gets to act like she’s a genius and good at everything) but she works hard at maintaining a sweet image and making everyone love her, even as she snickers behind their backs, all the while subtly setting her sister up for failure.

This is a proper revenge story, I’m promised by those who read the LN!! Revenge stories about women are rare to come back, especially one that doesn’t make revenge look like a total evil thing lol. What can I say, I have my interests. Anyway, it’s super cathartic to watch Aria slowly unfold her masterplan to foil her sister’s plans and take everything that her sister had cherished in her previous life. And all that not to mention the certain powers that Aria later discovers she has at her disposal... :3c

Beware of the Villainess by Bbongdda Mask (story) and Pureunkanna (art)

I became the villainess of a novel! Do I hate it? No! I find it rather nice. A duke’s daughter equals a jobless rich person. How can I miss out on a chance like this?! This is the best chance to just enjoy life. I should throw out the main plot and just live life how I want to! Not long after waking up as the villainess, I witnessed my fiancé, the crown prince and the novel’s male lead, cheating. I saw him embrace a lady other than I and he was smiling so bright. I was brought to tears… Just kidding, I didn’t cry! My tears are worth too much to be wasted on that garbage. Instead of tears, I yelled out, “Your highness, are you trash?”

Why *I* like it: Listen there are 2 ways to react to waking up as a villain of a series you once read… Either you turn the tables and become a good guy OR you can embrace it! The world the novel is based on has the basic premise of the pure and good heroine winning the affection of 4 bratty, horrible men. MC is the fiance of one of them and says fuck that. She also has some thoughts that none of these dudes deserve the heroine of the novel but this one is still pretty early on so the jury still out on if she’s going to save this poor girl from her fate of ending up with any of these absolute assholes.

This one is along the veins of the previously mentioned Living As the Tyrant’s Older Sister, in that the pull for this series is even less of the romance and more about the comedy aspect… Also MC’s facial expressions are…. Choice. Just so good. Enough with pretty girls making pretty faces!! We need more girls being ugly. It’s what we deserve. Yell at cheaters!!!!!! Tell them to fuck off!! Yes please.

Accomplishments of the Duke’s Daughter by Reia (Story), Umemiya Suki (Art)

Although she had reincarnated as the daughter of a Duke's house, by the time she regained her memories, the Ending was already here.

"After he cancels my engagement, the story would have me confined to a church. Where can I find my happy ending?"

Why *I* like it: I never read or watched Wolf and Spice but I imagine this is isekai Wolf and Spice… Well it’s got a lot about the economy at least lmao. That’s literally the only thing I know about Wolf and Spice. Anyway!! The twist in this one is that the MC remembers her past life just as she’s about to be exiled, the end of the original game. What the series focuses on is her life afterwards, as she scrambles to grab at any semblance of a good life… And she does so pretty quickly!

Her past life comes in handy as she sets to work managing a dukedom and fixes the economy!! Moreover, even though it pains my heart whenever two women are pitted against each other… It does a great job of putting into question the original heroine’s pure shtick as she spends extravagantly on dresses and would rather just donate to the poor one day, instead of Iris the MC who sets to work on fixing the economy and creating jobs for the poor and putting money into bettering their lives in the long run, rather than throwing money at them and running. Also, she’s grabbed the attraction of a mysterious man who takes a job helping her even though he is a prince aka the brother of her ex-fiance who he is fighting for the crown for.

And that’s it!! My list for now!! Tbh by next month there’ll likely be even more faves as I continue to add more and more series to my read list lol. Because this isn’t even a fraction of all the reincarnation isekai series I’m into, just the best for certain reasons.

BTW, if you’re like... wow this list sure is straight then true unfortunately. I’m waiting for the day “I Favor The Villainess” gets adapted somehow. Also there are several isekai in which a straight girl reincarnates into a yaoi novel but I haven’t found a true gem among them yet.

Check your motivators? That is a good way to get out of seeming laziness. The motivation for me creating my au was Pettiness, someone told me I couldn't and I every moment that I continue working on it I am proving them wrong. So, why did you start the comic, and if applicable, why do you want to continue. I would suggest for you self improvement, the idea that every time you draw or write something, and you think about the nature of the Piece, you become better at drawing or writing.

Alright, let me spin you a tale of how and why I came up with the alternate universe of...

StarHair Spinel

T'was the night of September 14, Steven Universe the movie had been pirated by someone a d became publicly available to view on this website called YouTube, I, FB, a passive consumer of Steven Universe content who had not yet been fully enamoured with the cartoon show, was quite excited to watch the movie. After observing the film in it's (almost) entirety, I had grown to enjoy this new gem by the name of "Spinel" for her adorable demeanor and tragic backstory, but I thought to myself, "What if this gem's backstory weren't so tragic and Pink Diamond had taken her to Earth?", and so, I had found images on the search engine by the name of google, put them in my drawing program called Sony sketch, and began to design a Spinel that was to be part of the Crystal Gems, a group of rogues that was the main focus of the cartoon.

And though this design had been changed since then, the core still would've remained as the basis for her current appearance. I had originally posted on a social media application called Amino which housed many sub cultures and groups also called aminos, I firstly posted this on a general art-based amino and then I decided to start a comic outlining the "beggining" of the departure from the main canon of the show, once I created the cover image, I soon started to think like none other, "I should show this to the Steven Universe Amino!", I was already acquainted with the amino thanks to sponsored youtubers but after a few problems involving my mom and me talking to a complete stranger who approached me I haven't been active it until I came up with the comic.

The comic had lasted 11 pages and I am still quite fond of it despite it's less than pleasant art and lackluster fast pacing.

*cough* My main motivator for the AU is purely out of passion to create, I was into drawing things since I could hold a pencil and I loved imagining different scenarios and stuff. And also some form of spite as I see alot of people drop their projects especially on the SU amino and I'm like "haha suckers, I'm still doing it unlike you!" to put it simply and harshly. It's kind of funny, honestly. I only started the Tumblr in April of this year and I don't plan on stopping anytime soon haha.

So does that mean you dont like game who shall not be named?? And if I may ask, how come???

I have nothing against the game itself. (in fact I LIKE a lot of their animations and music videos--when I go and seek it myself) I actually thought when I first saw the posts that it looked quite interesting and there’s no doubt the animation displayed in the gifs are quite beautiful. Just the fact that tumblr keeps shoving the same sponsored posts of it down my throat when I didn’t express any interest in it so it annoys the ever loving fuck out of me, and thus ensuring that I will never play out of pure spite in a stunning counter productive move.

Aspects & Fanfics Ep. 31: Royal Fears

With this new entry of this fanfic inspired on Sanders Sides by Thomas Sanders, Joan S. and the Foster Dawg Team, I’m starting a new phase on the format. My idea is to slowly move away from mimicking the format of a real Sanders Sides episode and start experimenting with other formats. In past episodes, there were four rules I always adhered to: I would use a script format (this won’t change, it will still be written as a script, even if it’s conceived to be read and not to be filmed), Thomas would always be present and center of the story, except in the ending cards (which forced me to use the gimmicks of the flashbacks, the orbs, etc), there would be an opening trying to make a short gag of some kind, and there would be an ending card in the style of the one featured at the end of Embarrasing Phases, some scene of the Sides in the Mind Palace foreshadowing future episodes. Some of these will stay, others may not. I want to try experimenting with the Asides format, introducing real ellypsis during the plot, maybe scenes without Thomas present, I don’t know, something to make the plot more dynamic and less rigid. We’ll see how it goes. Well, enough ranting. I’m leaving you with the new episode and I hope you enjoy it.

SYNOPSIS: Two of Thomas’ friends ask Roman for help and when he can’t fulfil their needs, they ask Chris instead, who excels in them. That makes Roman feel insecure and a bit jealous of his own son in spite of him.

WARNINGS: Romantic prinxiety, mentions to romantic dukeceit, even though Remus is not present in this episode. Angst.

[Thomas is writing something on his laptop, when someone knocks at the door]

THOMAS: That must be Dominic, he told me he would come over to ask me for something. I wonder what it is. [closing his laptop] Oh, well, this new Cartoon Therapy script for the episode after the one Adri was working in will have to wait. As well as the other eleven projects for the upcoming shorts, the next scripts for the two following episodes based on my life with the Sanders Sides, the notes I had to take so that I could tell Foti what we must improve for the following music show we’re working into… oh, yes, and I had to answer all these emails about upcoming sponsored jobs… Well, all of that will have to wait. Isn’t it weird that some people out there say that I’m not releasing anything while my friends tell me that I work too much? Oh, well, who’s right or wrong, who’s to say? That sounds familiar… Never mind.

[Thomas puts the laptop on the couch and goes to open the door]

[intro sequence]

DOMINIC: Hi, Thomas.

THOMAS: Hi, Dominic. How are you doing?

DOMINIC: Fine, thanks. I hope I’m not interrupting you. I’m sorry I just called you this morning, but I kinda need your help.

THOMAS: Oh, of course. Is there any trouble?

DOMINIC: No, no, everything’s fine. I meant that I need your help for some little project of mine. If you’re not too busy, that is.

THOMAS: I was working on something, but don’t worry, I’ve still got plenty of time till the deadline, and this moment of recess will be refreshing for me.

DOMINIC: Good. You know you can call me anytime, should you need any kind of assistance for that project, right?

THOMAS: Of course, thank you. But now tell me how can I be of assistance for you.

DOMINIC: In fact, it’s not exactly your help what I need. I need Roman’s help.

THOMAS: Roman’s help? Of course. I’ll call him right now. Roman! Could you come here, please?

[Roman rises up with his iconic princely pose]

ROMAN: [singing the first word in a G4] I-I-I-I-I’m here, Thomas… Oh, hi Dominic, it’s been ages.

DOMINIC: Yes, it has.

THOMAS: I’m calling you because Dominic needs you, Roman.

ROMAN: Well, I’ll be glad to rescue you however I can, Dominic. How can I be of service to you?

DOMINIC: [confused] Rescue… me? Oh, well. Roman, would you mind modeling for me?

ROMAN: Oh… I was born to be a model. Do you need me to wear Gucci, Dolce, Versace…? Let me warn you, when I wear a tuxedo, James Bond has to stir his Martini because he’s too shaken by my handsomeness…

DOMINIC: I was thinking more of a princely modeling. If I wanted that kind of modern modeling, I could have just asked Thomas himself.

THOMAS: [giggles bashfully] Oh, come on, I’m not a model…

DOMINIC: That’s not what your Instagram posts are showing, Thomas. You’re good looking, don’t belittle yourself.

THOMAS: Thank you, that’s flattering…

ROMAN: Well, what kind of project are we talking about exactly? Maybe if I know what you’re thinking on, I could be of more help.

THOMAS: I’m intrigued too.

DOMINIC: Well, I wanted to make a drawing featuring a prince, and since you’re the closest available prince I have, I was hoping if you could show me some of your best outfits to grab some ideas.

ROMAN: Of course, I’ll be delighted. As you can see, this is my normal princely suit, in bright white with a red sash.

DOMINIC: Yes, I have seen you plenty of times with it. It’s not exactly what I’m looking for. Have you got something else?

ROMAN: Well… [changes outfit to his old season 1 outfit] This is my old outfit, if you were going for something more sober, but equally bright.

DOMINIC: It is almost the same as your usual outfit, and no offense, but the suit looks a little bit like a cooking jacket. That won’t work either.

ROMAN: I’m not offended, that’s why I ended up changing it, after all. Okay, then let’s go for less utilized royal outfits of mine…

[Roman changes to the outfit he uses to wear when he’s fused with Remus]

ROMAN: How about this? Usually I wear this only when I’m fused with Remus, but if you wanted a radically different approach, this may work.

DOMINIC: I mean… It’s almost the same as the old one, only that in navy blue and brown, although the crown is a nice addition, but it’s still not enough, I’m sorry.

ROMAN: Well, you’re surely seem to know what you’re looking for… Let me see what I hold in my closet… There’s not much in my closet nowadays other than clothing… [giggles, then with a cringey expression] I’m sorry for that one. Okay… How about… this?

[Now Roman is wearing the very first outfit his brother Roland, the Prince Guy, wore in the Sanders Shorts, similar to his own old one but full of medals on the chest and the sash]

ROMAN: I couldn’t find anything, so I borrowed this from my brother. But I kept the crown since you seemed to like it.

[Dominic frowns slightly at Roman]

DOMINIC: This… is just your old outfit full of medals. It’s not what I’m looking for. Don’t you have anything else that doesn’t feature a sash?

ROMAN: [switching back to his usual outfit, with an over dramatic voice] No sash!? How can a prince get out of his castle without a royal sash around his heart symbolizing his pureness of heart and his indomitable will!?

[At that moment, Chris rises up]

CHRIS: There you are, father! I’ve been looking for you everywhere! Have you forgotten we had fencing class today? You promised you’d teach me how to use your samurai sword!

ROMAN: I’m sorry, son. I totally forgot.

DOMINIC: I’m sorry… who is this?

THOMAS: Oh, that’s right, you and Dahlia haven’t met him yet. This is Chris. He’s Angsty Creativity and the son of Roman and Virgil. And yes, two male Sides can physically conceive a child because they’re not human. Chris, this is my friend Dominic.

CHRIS: Nice to meet you, Dominic.

DOMINIC: Same.

ROMAN: Well, Chris, I’m sorry, but our fencing lesson will have to wait. I was helping Dominic with…

DOMINIC: It’s okay, Roman! I finally found what I was looking for!

ROMAN: What?

DOMINIC: Chris, your outfit is perfect. Would you mind modeling for me?

CHRIS: What? What is modeling?

THOMAS: You stand still while an artist draws you. Dominic wants to make a drawing of you.

DOMINIC: I want to make some sketches of you wearing your outfit so that I can get ideas for a future cosplay of mine. I could make some photos, but I prefer to draw I because then I can include some ideas on the fly into the drawing.

CHRIS: Oh, well. I’d be honored to be of help, if you need me. When would you need me?

DOMINIC: Oh, we can do it right now, if you want. I have my tools in my car, I’ll get them and we’ll be ready. Hold on for a sec, be back soon.

[Dominic rushes to the door. Roman watches the scene with a face of confusion]

CHRIS: Oh, wow… I don’t know if I’ll be good at this…

THOMAS: Of course you can do this. It’s not that difficult, and it could be a good learning exercise for you, right Roman?

[Roman doesn’t answer, as he hasn’t heard Thomas]

THOMAS: Roman? Are you with us?

ROMAN: Mmm? Oh, I’m sorry, what did you say?

THOMAS: I said that this could be a good learning exercise for Chris, and that he can do this. Don’t you agree?

ROMAN: Oh… yes, yes, of course. You can do this, son, and I fully support you.

[Dominic returns carrying some drawing tools]

DOMINIC: Okay, I’m back. Are you ready?

CHRIS: Yes, what do I do?

DOMINIC: Just stand where you are, open your legs, your right hand on your hip, hold your sword with the left one and raise it pointing to… Thomas’ big picture on the wall, the one that Logan hates so much, that will do.

THOMAS: Wait, what?

DOMINIC: Oh, he didn’t tell you? Well… you were going to learn about that sooner or later… Then, Chris, raise your chin, project your chest, hold your breath a bit, give me a brave smile and look at the big picture. Roman, would you mind stepping back a few steps? You’re covering Chris.

ROMAN: Oh, sorry… Well, if you don’t need me, I guess I’ll be going now. See ya later guys.

THOMAS: See ya, Roman, thanks for coming.

[Roman sinks down with a serious face]

DOMINIC: Now, the most difficult part, don’t move for the next hour or so.

CHRIS: Do I have to hold my breath for a whole hour?

DOMINIC: Oh, of course not, sorry, you would suffocate.

CHRIS: I mean, I can hold my breath for an hour if you want me to, it’s just that it’s not pleasant.

DOMINIC: You can hold your breath for a whole hour without suffocating?

THOMAS: That’s a new Side ability I didn’t know about…

CHRIS: Sure! I can hold my breath for as long as I want, but it’s not comfy, and after the first two hours or so, my skin starts turning purple.

DOMINIC: Don’t worry it won’t take that long. And you can breath from time to time if you want, Chris, as long as you don’t move.

CHRIS: Okay…

[A couple of hours later, Dominic and Chris are done and gone. Thomas is finishing his lunch before going back to his script, when someone knocks at the door again. Thomas goes to open the door]

THOMAS: Oh, hi Joan.

JOAN: [walking to the living room with Thomas] Hi, Thomas.

THOMAS: I’m still not done with the script. I think I can have it finished later today, it’s only a couple of pages of the ending what I’m missing.

JOAN: That’s fine… Listen, can you help me with something?

THOMAS: Of course.

JOAN: You see, Talyn and I are going to visit some family from out of town, you know, my uncle and aunt and my two cousins. These two cousins love spooky stories. I wanted to write a spooky short tale to tell them while we’re there… but I’m dried out. I can’t figure out anything. So, I wondered if you could call…

ROMAN: [rising up, with a theatrical voice] Do not fear, Joan! Creativity is here and I will help you with whatever you may need!

THOMAS: Oh, Roman… I didn’t call you yet.

JOAN: Yeah… I… I’m sorry… but I meant to call your son, Chris.

ROMAN: [disappointed] Oh…

JOAN: But don’t worry, I can use your help if you’re so eager to help me.

THOMAS: Are you sure, though? You meant to write a spooky story, and Roman, you know that’s not your strong suit.

ROMAN: [slightly dejected] Oh, a spooky story… Yes, of course. I’m… I’m not good at that. The experts on spooky are my brother Remus and Chris.

JOAN: Remus would be too much. I want a spooky story, not to traumatize my cousins with a retelling of “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre”. I thought on Chris because he’s Angsty Creativity, something in the middle, which is exactly what I was looking for.

ROMAN: [slightly sad voice] Yes… my son is so great… he’s been what everyone’s been looking for lately, it seems…

THOMAS: Are you okay, Roman?

ROMAN: [sudden over the top happy voice] Yes, yes, I’m fine! I’m happy that my son gets to be so successful, and I’m proud of him, of course, like I’m supposed to be as his father! Go ahead and call him!

THOMAS: Okay… Chris? Could you come here again, please?

CHRIS: [rising up] Yes, Thomas? I hope it’s not more modeling, like before… My muscles are still hurting of standing still for one hour.

THOMAS: No, this time what I need is exactly your thing.

JOAN: Yes, I need you to help me write a spooky short tale.

CHRIS: [excited] Oh, a spooky tale! I love spooky! Of course! What do you have in mind?

ROMAN: [with a bittersweet smile] Well, if you don’t need me, I’ll be going, just like before. Bye, guys.

THOMAS: Bye, Roman, thanks for coming. I’m sorry you couldn’t be of more help now.

ROMAN: [sighs while sinking down with an utterly sad expression] So am I…

[an hour or so has passed, and Joan and Chris are done and gone. Thomas is again in front of his laptop, trying to come up with something to write, but he can’t get anything]

THOMAS: I’m totally out of ideas… And I was so inspired this afternoon… Maybe I should go check on Roman. He looked so dejected when he left… Maybe he needs some cheering up. It’s good that, since I learned to dominate my Light Master powers, I can go in and out of the Mind Palace without assistance. Okay, let’s go.

[Thomas leaves the laptop on the couch, stands up and then sinks down. Before he rises up in Roman’s room, he hears Virgil’s voice, so he decides to stay hiding without showing up, listening to everything that’s happening there. Roman is sad and quiet, while Virgil is talking to him]

VIRGIL: A penny for your thoughts, Roman. You’ve been so silent for the last hour. Is there anything bothering you?

ROMAN: I’m fine… I’m fine, don’t worry, Virgil. I’ll be fine.

VIRGIL: “I’m fine” and “I’ll be fine” are exclusionary sentences, and “I’ll be fine” means that you’re not fine right now. What’s wrong?

ROMAN: It’s nothing… just my old stupid ego fighting against me, like usual. It will pass. It has to pass, right?

VIRGIL: I’m sorry, but I’m not following you. What are you talking about?

ROMAN: I mean… I should be fine already. In fact, I should be overwhelmed with joy and pride, like a father should be of his son. So, why am I feeling like this? Am I… horrible for thinking like this?

VIRGIL: I still don’t get you. Why don’t you start from the beginning so that I can understand. What are you talking about and what does Chris have to do with it?

ROMAN: Today, I tried to help Thomas’ friends with some projects of theirs… and they all preferred Chris’ help, who excelled at those tasks. I felt happy for him, but at the same time… I felt so bad… I don’t know why… Well, to be honest, I do. I felt displaced by Chris, like… [his voice starts trembling] like if suddenly I wasn’t needed anymore, like… Chris is so much younger and so much better than me in so many things. He’s a better prince than I’ve ever been… and it scares me to think that Thomas… may not want my help anymore. [tears start coming out of his eyes] Suddenly I’m feeling old, and useless… and… and…

[Roman starts crying. Virgil hugs him]

VIRGIL: It’s okay…

ROMAN: [crying on Virgil’s shoulder] I’m sorry I’m being so pathetic right now… You must feel so ashamed of me when I start crying like this, like a hopeless baby… I’m a father, I’m supposed to be strong to support my family, and yet I feel like the weight is crushing me down… Maybe I’m not good enough to be a father…

VIRGIL: Don’t say that, Roman. Of course you’re good enough. I couldn’t think of a better father for Chris than you. We’re just pretty new at this and need some time to get used to parenthood. Especially after the experience we’ve all just gone through, which was not exactly a good start. But it’s only a matter of time, you’ll see.

ROMAN: And yet, all I’ve ever done since I’ve become a father is a total failure after another.

VIRGIL: That’s not true!

ROMAN: Isn’t it? First I let that fiend take our son. I gave Chris to that monster on a silver platter because of my foolish idea of taking Chris to Sandersia while he was still wandering around over there.

VIRGIL: You didn’t know that would happen! None of us could have seen it coming!

ROMAN: And now, I’m jealous and envious of my own son, and I’m feeling him like a threat. What does that turn me into? I’m Prince Roman. I’m supposed to be a hero, and yet I’m behaving like a villain! Chris is the new hero and I’m just the villain that would wish to own everything the hero owns, that would wish to be in his place… I… I’m a fraud as a prince. Maybe I should abdicate the crown on Chris. He’d make a better use of it right now.

VIRGIL: Roman, I’m sorry to tell you, but you are truly behaving like a villain right now.

ROMAN: Right?

VIRGIL: Right, but not against Chris. You’re being a villain against yourself.

ROMAN: What?

VIRGIL: You are just throwing one harsh judgment against yourself after another. As I can see, you don’t really hold any ill will against our son. It’s all thoughts in your head… like, something about Remus was rubbing off on you. You’re starting to get intrusive thoughts of your own and they’re driving you mad.

ROMAN: I don’t know… maybe… Remus was part of me after all and maybe a part of him still resides inside of me… But still, that is a type of thought that I’m not supposed to have, especially against my own son.

VIRGIL: But you have constantly said that Chris’ achievements make you happy. So you don’t really have anything against him, it’s all against yourself. You’re thinking that you’re less than him, that you don’t deserve as much praise as him, and that is what is making you feel afraid. But that, as Logan would say, is a falsehood. You’re not less than anyone. You’re still prince Roman. The same great prince I fell in love with.

ROMAN: Virgil…

VIRGIL: Not so long ago, it was me who stayed in your position. I was the one who constantly belittled himself, who constantly thought of himself that I was less than all of the other Sides. But then you came around and changed my world for the better. I can tell you by experience that all these harsh judgments are only in your head, just like it happened with me. Think carefully. Do you honestly believe that Thomas could live without you? He couldn’t. He needs us all to be himself. You’re just as an important part of him as all the rest of us. Even when Thomas is a complete dork and quite a moron sometimes, he would agree with me.

[Thomas rises up in the room emitting some offended Thomothy noises]

ROMAN: [startled] Thomas? How long have you been here?

VIRGIL: Quite a long time. He tried to stay hidden, but I noticed him. That’s why I picked on him to make him show up.

THOMAS: You noticed me? I thought if you stayed hidden you couldn’t be noticed.

VIRGIL: Yeah, but you need some more practice in stealth. The portrait of Roman in the back wall got completely crooked when you arrived and I noticed it was you.

ROMAN: Wait, you’re right! How didn’t I notice that?

VIRGIL: You were so drowned in your own thoughts that you lacked the capacity to pay attention to your surroundings, Roman.

ROMAN: Anyway, you should have announced your presence, Thomas. It’s not nice to spy on us like that. And you should have told me, Virgil. I was having a private conversation and I didn’t want anyone to hear me, especially Thomas.

THOMAS: I apologize, Roman, and you’re right that I shouldn’t be spying on your conversations, but I’m thankful that Virgil didn’t tell you, and I think I can guess why he didn’t.

VIRGIL: [smirks] I think you guessed correctly, but go on, Thomas.

THOMAS: Would you have ever told me that you felt like this at all? Be honest.

ROMAN: Well, probably not… but even so, I was in my right not to tell you. Everyone has a right to keep secrets to himself, Thomas. Even you keep secrets, we all do.

THOMAS: You’re right. Everyone has a right to have a personal space and to have secrets of his own. However, if those secrets are wounding you, they’re also wounding me, and I think I have a right to know when something is wounding me, directly or indirectly. Don’t you? I promise not to spy on you again like this. It was wrong of me and I'm sorry, but I beg you that, the next time you have feelings like these that hurt you – and me – so much, come tell me yourself, at least whatever affects me or whatever I can use to help you.

ROMAN: I know… it’s just that… I was afraid of your reaction. I thought that you’d see me like a monster or at least… like a jerk.

THOMAS: Roman, what kind of person do you think I am? I’m not here to judge you. Aren’t we friends?

ROMAN: Of course we are friends.

THOMAS: Then you should know that, as your friend, I’m here to support you. I want to help you in every way that I can, but I can’t if you don’t open your heart to me, Roman.

CHRIS: [suddenly rising up] What are you talking about, Thomas? What do you have to open your heart about, father?

ROMAN: [startled] Oh, Chris… you’re here.

CHRIS: Of course I’m here, father. I live in this room too, remember? Even if I have my own bedroom, I share this living room too. Maybe I should consider moving to dad’s room as it is empty now and both you and I would have more space…

VIRGIL: I don’t like that idea so much… I didn’t have the chance of raising you and you’re already thinking on emancipating… it’s not fair. I go through the struggle and pains of becoming a father and I don’t get all the good stuff of raising a son…

CHRIS: It was just an idea, dad, I’m fine here right now, and it’s not like I have a college to go to or anything… but we’re diverting. What was Thomas talking about? Is something bothering you, father?

ROMAN: [hesitating, afraid to speak] Well, Chris, I…

VIRGIL: It’s nothing serious, Chris, don’t worry.

CHRIS: And now it’s when I really start worrying, because if it wasn’t serious you wouldn’t mind telling me, and yet you’re hiding it from me. [suddenly scared] Is it something about me? Did… did I do something wrong? Are you mad or disappointed at me over something?

ROMAN: [waving both hands quickly] No, no, no, of course not, Chris! You didn’t do anything wrong at all! [sighs] Okay, I’ll tell you, but before I start, know that nothing of what I’m going to say is your fault, and above all else, know that I love you with all my heart and that I want nothing but your happiness, okay?

CHRIS: [confused and concerned] Okay…

ROMAN: The problem is not you. It’s me. Everything you do as a Side was something that I was in charge of doing, mostly. Now you’ve arrived, and you’re so perfect, so much better than me in everything you do that… I suddenly felt useless and, I’m ashamed to admit it… [hesitates before continuing] …jealous of your success. But I repeat that it’s not your fault and you did nothing wrong at all. It’s all in my head and I don’t have any ill will against you. I’m happy and proud that you’re successful, okay? Well… what do you say? Would you… forgive me?

CHRIS: Are you… kidding me? You are jealous of… me? But why? I’m nothing special. I’m nothing compared to you in terms of creativity. Yes, I may be an expert on angsty creativity, but you are Creativity with a capital C. You can tackle almost any genre you set your eyes into, and it’s me who would wish to be as perfect as you are, father. You are my inspiration, my role model and my motivation to keep on improving and getting better, because one of my biggest wishes is that whatever I make can make you proud of me, father. I have nothing to forgive you for. I’m the one who should ask you to forgive me for making you feel like this, it was never my intention at all to hurt you.

ROMAN: Oh, son, I’m telling you you did nothing wrong. However, you’re so mistaken in so many things. I’m not as perfect as you think you are. I’m incredibly flawed. Despite how much I try to hide it with my poses, I’ve always been very insecure and afraid of failure. And I make a lot of mistakes that would make you feel embarrassed of me. [holding gently Chris’ cheek, who in turn holds his father’s hand] And don’t say again that you’re not special. You’re wonderful in so many ways. You have an incredible spark within you and it makes me sad that you can’t see it inside of yourself. You don’t need to proof yourself before me, because I’m already proud of you, Chris.

VIRGIL: We can agree in a couple of things then. You both are harsh with yourselves, and you both are proud of each other at the same time, which is proof of how how much judgmental you are on yourselves. I suppose that’s the curse of creators, never able to see the beauty and value of their own work, no matter how much praise they receive from others. It’s true that both of you are flawed. Who isn’t flawed, anyway? But at the same time, you both are special in your own ways and you must learn to give yourselves an honest pat on the back for your accomplishments. If you want a “biased unbiased opinion”, I’m proud of both of you, and anyone who could see your work and had just a little bit of good taste should be proud of both of you equally.

[Roman and Chris look at Virgil with a moved smile]

CHRIS: Thank you, dad.

ROMAN: Thank you, Virge. I love you.

VIRGIL: And I love both of you.

THOMAS: This was such a beautiful family bonding moment… I almost feel awkward and out of place for being here disturbing your privacy. I should be leaving.

VIRGIL: What are you talking about, Thomas? You are our family too.

ROMAN: That’s right, so come here right now for a family collective hug, okay?

THOMAS: [smiles] Gladly.

[all of them join in a group hug while the camera slowly moves away]

ROMAN: [still hugging Thomas] Thomas?

THOMAS: Yes, Princey?

ROMAN: [with the same “heartwarming” voice] If you ever tell the others about my insecurities and flaws, I will feed you to the Dragon Witch, okay?

THOMAS: [a little concerned] Uh… okay…

[ending card]

[Deceit is in his room. Honesty rises up]

HONESTY: Hi, Dee.

DECEIT: Hi, Hon, how are you doing?

HONESTY: I’m fine… What about you?

DECEIT: Me? I’m… fine, totally fine…

[Honesty stares at Deceit with a condescending glance letting him know that he’s aware Deceit’s lying]

DECEIT: Okay… You already know, I’m not fine, so what do you want me to say?

HONESTY: What do you feel when you think about Remus?

DECEIT: Well, he’s chaotic, bad mannered, wild and even brutal to some extent… but there’s also this… gallantry in him. Like… he’s a duke after all and he was once part of a prince, so it’s natural that there are traces of that gallantry in him. Deep inside… Deep deep inside, he’s as charming as his brother Roman and there’s something about him that… really, really attracts me. But I don’t know if I can consider that proper love. Passion and love are not always synonymous. And I'm not even sure if I'm feeling passion towards him. I can't figure out my feelings at all.

HONESTY: May I assume that there’s something in him that attracts you and also something in him that repels you?

DECEIT: I don’t know… maybe. When he lets himself get carried away by that other side, he can be really dangerous. Remember our adventure in his castle, we could barely get out of there alive. I’m not saying he would go to those extremes again, but…

HONESTY: So, in short, you love him, but you’re scared to love him. Am I right?

DECEIT: Well…

HONESTY: Be honest with me, you know you can be.

DECEIT: I guess you’re right. I do love him, but I’m scared to love him. And I don’t want to love him, but…

HONESTY: …but you do, because that’s how love works. It just shows up with or without an invitation, and stays and leaves whenever it pleases him… Wow, love looks just like a cat if you think about it…

DECEIT: [bittersweet giggle] Sort of… But you already know who was the “cat” I’ve always associated with love, Hon.

HONESTY: Virgil… Are you sure you still love him, though? I mean, there are certainly long-term relationships of three or more consenting people, but… I may be wrong, but your memories show me that that’s not your cup of tea, that you’ve always been a one-man-only kind of guy. That’s why I’m asking you. Do you still love Virgil?

DECEIT: I… I think I do. Gosh, I’m so confused. I’m not even sure of myself.

HONESTY: Well… there’s one Side who could be of more help than me in this matter of feelings. Maybe you should talk to Patton.

DECEIT: What? No! He’s Virgil’s father! And he’s also Thomas’ morality! He would judge me, probably harshly! Remember that in the beginning he despised me! And it took me so long to gain his friendship, that I don’t want to let it all go to waste!

HONESTY: That’s all water under the bridge, Dee. Patton is our friend, and he loves us, including you, Deceit. I’m sure he would try to help you if you give him a chance. And he understands feelings better than anyone else. He even noticed Logan’s feelings for him before Logan himself could figure them out. I’m sure he could help you figure out your own feelings too.

DECEIT: I don’t know…

HONESTY: I won’t push you to do anything that you don’t wanna do, but will you promise me at least that you’ll consider asking him for help. I’m worried about you, Dee, I just want you to be happy.

DECEIT: I know, brother, and I thank you very much. [sighs] I promise I’ll meditate about it. But nothing more yet until I make up my mind.

HONESTY: Okay, as you wish, Dee… Now, what’s for dinner?

DECEIT: Dinner?

HONESTY: Of course, you wouldn’t expect me to come here as your sentimental advisor and not get rewarded with some dinner, right?

DECEIT: [smirks] Why you… Do you want to help me make dinner, then? It will be a nice way of relaxing after this convo.

HONESTY: Of course. Anything for my favorite brother.

DECEIT: I’m your only brother…

HONESTY: I know, I’m Honesty, I didn’t say any lies, did I?

Final Thoughts: The Witch

*SIGH*

I didn't hate it.

I wanted to hate it. I use to hate it.

I didn't hate it.

I didn't even hate William as a character as much as I use to. Still hate Ineson, though.

My Bias

Let me start off with my bias. If you couldn't tell by now, I love goats. What originally drew me to The Witch that day in Family Video (not sponsored) was, of course, the goat on the cover. After watching the movie I did some reading on it and the VAST majority of coverage about the movie was about Black Phillip. "Fine by me!" I thought. "I'd rather read about the only star that matters here anyway!"

And that's how I learned of Charlie. Charlie was a beautiful black buck with gorgeous piercing golden eyes. There isn't much base information about him but from my own research and knowledge, I beleive Charlie is an Old Irish. Funny enough, the striking horns that earned Charlie his place in the movie because of how large they were are not actually that big by Old Irish standards. These boys can grow some IMPRESSIVE racks. *cough*

Charlie was not the most dedicated actor on set. If they wanted him to be boisterous and act aggressive, Charlie wanted to take a nap. If they wanted him to hold still and display the calm demeanor of The Devil, Charlie wanted to run around like a kid discovering his legs for the first time. This description didn't shock me in the least. "Thats...thats just a goat?" I thought. "Thats just how they ARE." Goats are like...well, goats are unique animals. While even a cat can be trained with enough patience and the right reward, goats are wonderfully intelligent and MIND NUMBINGLY STUPID animals all at the same time. You look into their eyes and you see the infinite knowledge of the universe AND the mindless empty void AT THE SAME TIME. That is just the nature of the domestic goat. So of course you will never have a goat do what you want it to on the first, second, or even tenth try. If you work with goats in any way, you just need to accept this.

So Charlie, this incredibly intelligent and extremely stupid animal, was on a set of a movie where He was the antagonist in the minds of the characters, actors, and crew. Charlie could have been just fine on the set if the actors had kept their animosity to filming sessions, and most of them did just that. Most of the actors and crew were, at worst, neutral towards Charlie when not actively filming a scene with him. Most of the actors.

Ineson was not among them. Ineson is quoted as saying "From the moment we set eyes on each other it was just kind of hate at first sight." Now, because of their vast infinite nothingness in their heads, goats really aren't capable of "hate at first sight," but they CAN sense animosity from others towards them. Like when your cat knows that your dad hates cats. They just know. So you have an incredibly intelligent moron that weighs just over 200lbs looking at this imposing angry man that was Ralph Ineson and he knows the man does not like him and Ineson has decided that every action Charlie makes is just to spite him, specifically.

It was not the best paring...

By the 4th day of filming, Ineson reported that he was on pain killers for the remainder of the 5-week shoot.

The thing was, the rest of the actors and crew (aside from Eggers but he was trying to direct a goat in a movie so he gets a little leeway) actually recall how sweet and wonderful Charlie was. Anya Taylor-Joy has said that the shoot was a "beautiful" experience. Anna Kilch, a veteran animal trainer, said Charlie was a dream to work with.

So I'm not the biggest fan of Ineson...

The Movie

With that said, what did I think about the movie?

It was...not horrible. In fact, if I put aside my own animosity towards Ineson, it was pretty ok. There are PROBLEMS, no doubt about that, but it was decent.

The Good

The atmosphere was beautiful. It was shot in a quaint little bit of nowhere in Northern Ontario. Pretty sure they put a blue filter over everything but it really did work. It muted all the color and made it all very dreary and damp feeling. In most other situations this would be a major detriment but the overall feeling of hopelessness from the characters was perfectly accented by the misty and drab landscape.

The characters....there were problems but I'll touch on that later. What I liked was how they represented the Deadly Sins.

William is pretty clear. He is the Sin of Pride. It was his pride that had them exiled from their settlement. It was his pride that caused him to lie and steal from his own family. It was his pride that kept his family in a place that was blighted and would not produce anything. It was his pride that made him refuse to see Black Phillip for what he was.

Katherine was also very clear. She is the Sin of Wrath. Her anger at Thomasin for the loss of her infant blinded her to everything around here. It blinded her to Thomasin's innocence. It blinded her to her other childrens sins. It blinded her to how hard Thomasin worked to regain her mothers favor. And, eventually, it blinded her to the avatars of the devil that came to her that dark night.

Caleb, again, very clear. He is the Sin of Lust. Caleb was a bright young boy who was dedicated to and dearly loved his family. He loved one family member a little too much. Caleb lusted after his elder sister. That lust eventually lead him into the arms of the titular Witch as she seduced him with her HUGE....tracks of land... c:

Mercy and Jonas are harder to pin down. Eventually I settled on Envy and Sloth respectively, though I'm not 100% sold on them. Jonas I'm a bit more sure on. His character is fairly one note and all about shirking any work his elder sister tries to give him. I settled for Envy for Mercy mostly because of the scene near the creak. She seemed to envy the attention her father and elder brother gave to Thomasin. Neither one are very strong connections though.

Thomasin didn't really show a sign of a serious sin until the very end. Actually, she almost seemed to embody ALL of the sins in the end after being almost pure as snow for the whole movie. Almost. She displayed minor sins throughout the movie but it made her a believable character. She was a young woman, somewhere between 14 and 16 I'd say. She got angry at her siblings, she wasn't totally focused on her chores, the normal teenage stuff.

However, by the end of the movie, Thomasin displayed nearly all 7 Sins. She was wrathful towards her father. She was greedy for her mothers love. Black Phillip's offers display Gluttony (Butter) and Envy (the Dress). She was certain that she was right in all of her actions, blinded by Pride. She was apathetic once her family were all dead, leaving them all to rot in the elements as she wallowed in self pity. And finally she disrobed and frolicked with the devil in her Lust.

The Bad

Oh yes was there bad.

The sound direction was OBJECTIVELY horrible. What should have been ambient sound effects were too loud, the dialog was WAY too soft, the music was all over the place. It fell well into that nasty hole that Horror has of turning all the sound to soft and quiet before hitting you with a sudden jolt as the action jumps to life. When used well, this can elicit a visceral feeling in the viewer that lets them connect with the urgency of the scene. When used wrong, its just a cheep tactic to get a scare just like jump scares. This REALLY needs to be called out more often in Horror. We all denounce jump scares as cheep and over used and we need to do the same for the auditory equivalent.

The dialog was really hard to understand. I understand the choice considering the setting, but it was the biggest wall that kept me from enjoying anything the first time around. By the nature of Old Low English, words would blend into one another and become almost gibberish. Its a very lovely language to read, but a chore to listen to. I put on subtitles this time around and was able to follow the story much more easily. I would absolutly advise putting on subtitles while watching it.

The ending was the weakest part of the movie aside from the sound issues. I mean the very last scene. Everything leading up to that was actually very well done. The way Thomasin goes to Black Phillip and demands he talk to her. The way he offers her everything she could ever want. How you see both the hope and defeat in Thomasin when Black Phillip began to talk to her. It was clear he was the one who set in motion the cogs that ended with her families death but they were all victims of their own sins in the end. She saw his power over their insignificant lives and was crushed by his seeming superiority to the Lord she had been raised to love. At the same time, she saw the power he could bestow on HER, a clear tangible power unlike the "story" of Heavenly Power that she never saw physical examples of.

To end on the scene of this naked woman, no longer the innocent girl burdened by heavy trappings of modesty, walking into the woods with the black billygoat hot on her heals would have been so powerful. Just cut to black right there. You can even still have the witches chanting as it cuts to black and the end credits fade in.

But they decided to take it one step further and it did NOT help the ending. It was just too over the top with the naked women writhing erotically around this fire. When the camera turns back on Thomasin and she begins writhing and moaning and laughing and you see her rise into the air, maybe its just me but it took away the power of that sure confident woman walking into the woods.

It just feels like a step too far and would have been much stronger if they'd just left that part out.

The best part was still Charlie.

Detroit: Pokemon Trainers Kara has the baby pokemon and is so proud when they grow up to their final forms. Luther has a team of fighting types that don't want to battle. They work at the local Day Care. Markus and his Smeargle are famous artists trained by Carl, they travel around with their non-profit organisation Jericho teaching kids and Pokemon how to paint. Funded by Carl. He spends most of his time teaching, but his few for-sale pieces vary wildly in style, but they're allways full of emotion. (With really long abstract names. Like a flower titled 'The futility of life and how we muct reach for the light in spite of it' purely because it made Carl laugh. The people buying the pieces to turn a future profit still annoy him, but hearing them read the names always gives him a chuckle.) Simon (his boyfriend ofc) paints really beautiful pastel landscapes. North paints angry and bold - Apocolyptic city scapes, storms and wildfires - but it's how she gets her stress out and she feels better for it. Josh paints portraits of people and pokemon together having fun. Connor runs a shelter, taking in people and pokemon who've had to flee from abusive situations. His own experiences with Cyberlife have made him particuarly well suited to empathise. Hank works in the police, with a team of rough-looking pokemon who are actually secretly fluffy AF. His main partner is his Arcanine, Sumo. He meets Connor one day when a hurt pokemon in one of his cases needs help. They hit it off immediately. When he finds out Connor is sleeping at the center because he has nowhere else he offers his own home. He also talks the police department into working out a charity event to sponsor Connor's shelter. With the added funding and publicity Connor is able to hire some staff (his first two are the guy from the first crime scene (can't find the name listed anywhere, the one who killed the guy in self-defense) Angel (as named by Hawke) and Rupert (from 'The Nest' mission) (who loves bird types) but as the shelter grows he also hires Daniel and the Tracis.

Everyone is happy. The end.

INTERVIEW: Author Matt Alt Discusses What Makes Anime So Appealing

I'm gonna be honest, when I first began reading author Matt Alt's recent book Pure Invention: How Japan's Pop Culture Conquered The World, I was mostly doing it for the sections on anime and manga. Those are two mediums I'm pretty interested in, and I figured if the other parts weren't too engaging, I'd gut through them and eventually make it to my intended targets. But that never happened. While I came for the anime and manga, I stayed for Alt's deep dives into the history of such items as the karaoke machine, the Walkman, the Tamagotchi, the Hello Kitty mascot, and many more. The stories Alt told, using copious research, interviews, and sheer enthusiasm for the subjects made me unable to put Pure Invention down. I finished it in only a few days. Alt, a writer and speaker who also runs a localization company, was clearly pretty knowledgeable about all of this, so I decided to reach out and talk with him about the book.

One of the biggest things on my mind was that Japanese pop culture is a huge subject, and it would impossible to cover all of it, even in a series of books. So what was left out?

Probably the biggest one that I really wanted to talk about and had done a ton of research and interviews for was Power Rangers. As you know, they're a huge phenomenon in the United States, and they're based on a really long, historic series Super Sentai, which traces all the way back to the early 1970s. But they're also kind of deeply intertwined with western pop culture. There's like a Spider-Man tokusatsu series from the 1970s that jump-started and reinvigorated them from their original pattern. So there's this weird, double-helix DNA strand of Japanese and American pop culture going on that really flourished again when it came to the US in the '90s.

The intertwining nature of Japanese and American pop culture is a major theme of Pure Invention, with stuff that's popular in the former often being adapted for consumption in the latter. But there are plenty of franchises that haven't really made a mark in the United States, and Alt pointed out one in specific:

Doraemon. It's got to be one of the top-earning anime series of all time, but it's never really made much traction in the United States. On the surface, it looks like a fantasy — it's a robot cat from the future with a time machine and a bunch of gadgets. But it's actually set in an everyday, slice of life Japanese home and the situations that the protagonists often find themselves in are likely not familiar to Westerners. Like the main character Nobita wanting to get his New Years Money early, which isn't a big custom in America. There's stuff centered around really specific things like Japanese rice cooking, rice fields, low kotatsu tables, and things like that. And because that setting is so integral to how stories play out, it ironically makes Doraemon even harder for Westerners to get into than, say, Cowboy Bebop, which is set in this space opera-ey universe.

But even someone who knows a ton about a subject will inevitably find surprising things when they've done enough research, and that was certainly the case for Alt and Pure Invention:

I had never really done a deep dive on Astro Boy, and that's the first full-length weekly anime TV series in Japan, and its creator Osamu Tezuka literally coined the word "anime" to refer to it. I wasn't aware of how big it was in Japan or abroad, and for instance, I learned that Stanley Kubrick of 2001: A Space Odyssey and The Shining actually sent Tezuka a letter inviting him to collaborate on brainstorming and doing designs for 2001. It's really amazing to me that there's an alternate universe somewhere where Tezuka and Kubrick collaborated.

A series that Alt loves and spent a lot of time covering in Pure Invention is Gundam, a franchise that would probably be on the Mt. Rushmore of anime. But how did it get that way?

Gundam was my favorite growing up. Without it, this book might not exist. But when I was researching the book, I learned of this event called the Anime's New Century Declaration, which was conceived as a promotion for the Gundam movie in 1981, and they expected maybe a few hundred to show up to listen to director Tomino and a few others on the crew talk about the film production.

What happened was 20,000 people descended on Shinjuku and the cops were called and people worried about trampling, and it kind of turned into Anime Woodstock. A bunch of young anime fans who'd been expected to grow up and leave the "silly" cartoon stuff behind. But this generation was like "Screw that. If we're productive members of society, then why is it a problem for us to read manga and watch anime?" It was a huge coming out for that demographic and really set off a trend.

Back in the '70s, anime pretty much existed to sell toys, and as long as you put the sponsored toys in the show, they gave you free creative reign. But in spite of it being a show that sponsors and producers were using to sell toys, Tomino ended up making this baroque, dramatic space opera that was a thinly veiled critique of war and post-war Japanese society. And the hero was, to be blunt, kind of a geek. He wasn't a muscle-bound superhero. He's introverted and shy and would rather be fooling around on his computer than going out to war, and I think that resonates with people who would rather be doing the stuff they love than being forced to fit into the world by older people who don't understand them.

It provided a platform for the maturation of anime into something that wasn't just primarily around to sell toys to kids.

And the thing that makes anime such an appealing genre, especially for younger people? Alt explained it simply.

Anime does a really great job of coming down hard on all that angst and problems that adolescents have, and that's a reason why it does so well abroad. It doesn't look at adolescence as some kind of lesser form of adulthood and it doesn't condescend to the young people experiencing problems. And western media didn't offer that for a long time.

Doctor Who Series 12 Review Part 2/10: Spyfall Part Two

Air date: 5 January 2020

If the last episode didn’t raise enough questions for me already, this episode raises more questions and doesn’t bother to answer the questions I had last time. It’s like Dark Water/Death in Heaven all over again. We’re definitely going back to where Doctor Who should be.

Here’s this week’s spoiler-free thought: “Will some of them be coming back later?”

Spoilers continue after the break. Once again, please make sure you have watched both last week and this week’s episode before you proceed.

I’m putting this at the top now - I’ll be away for the next two episodes, so the reviews for them and the fifth episode will be delayed to the week of 27 January.

Where we last left off

A quick summary of Part One - the Doctor and her friends are enlisted by MI6 to investigate the deaths of spies across the world who had their DNA rewritten. While the Doctor and Graham meet with an old friend of the former named “O”, Ryan and Yaz were sent to investigate Daniel Barton and his company, VOR, where they learn that Barton is 93% human. They then head to a party Barton invited them to and chased him to his plane, where “O” reveals himself to be the Master just as a bomb destroys the cockpit of the plane, Barton nowhere in sight. The Doctor is seemingly sent to an unknown realm, the same one that Yaz was sent to earlier.

The villains that became overshadowed (for a while)

So in this episode, the Kasaavin are finally mentioned and revealed to be beings from another dimension spying throughout time. They apparently also had a connection with Ada Lovelace (Gordon), which is later revealed to be because of her links to the history of the computer, which the Kasaavin were studying. I can’t help but feel that the Master and Barton overshadowed them once we got to Part Two, but they do still have some relevance. The Kasaavin’s goal is to assimilate humanity and use their DNA as a storage medium. Daniel Barton allowed himself to be used as a test subject, explaining the 93% human DNA in him. The Master wanted to facilitate Barton and the Kasaavin’s plans before getting rid of them, which backfired on him and left him trapped in the Kasaavin’s realm.

Back to O, the elephant in the room

In the review for the last episode, I didn’t believe that Sacha Dhawan was the Master because of two main things; assuming that this incarnation comes after Missy, how would she have survived getting the full blast from Saxon’s laser screwdriver and even if she did, how would she have escaped the Mondasian ship without a TARDIS? Following this, the official Doctor Who Facebook and YouTube pages posted a video of Dhawan describing a brief history of the Master which seemed to cement the fact that O was in fact another incarnation of said Time Lord.

That being said, some thoughts did come to me over the past week, while looking at other people’s comments and opinions about the episode. The Master is an archnemesis of the Doctor and during their confrontations, his main goal is to gain moral and tactical dominance over the Doctor. Therefore, I don’t think the Master would have any reason to die unless it was to spite the Doctor, which he did at the end of the Series 3 finale, The Last of the Time Lords. Had it not been for Missy’s trick with her vortex manipulator, she would have died after spiting the Doctor again at the end of Death in Heaven.

Now that I’ve watched the episode, I guess I can accept that Sacha Dhawan is the Master, but the problem now remains as to which point in his timeline this incarnation is. Information from the Doctor Who Wiki presumes that he comes after Missy, but there are still people out there who are saying that he comes between Saxon and Missy. If the former is the case, then I guess my theory is that Saxon lied and didn’t actually give Missy the full blast, because again, I don’t think he would want to rob his future self of chances to spite the Doctor again. We don’t have any further information about this, so I guess we’ll just have to see... or maybe we won’t get an answer for a very long time. I still would have liked to see the Rani return, or I wish Moffat didn’t kill Missy off and rather just left her to regenerate.

Some people have said that O is a Master from another timeline or universe, but I don’t buy it; there’s barely any indication of him being as such, even after the “multiple Earths” seen in his hut (or rather, TARDIS) were revealed to represent multiple time periods, and even if it were so, how do we know the Doctor in this universe is the same as the Doctor from whatever universe he’s from?

Gallifrey, the next elephant in the room

So with the issue of the Master barely answered, we have another issue raised - what is going on with Gallifrey? When I heard the Master mention Gallifrey being destroyed “in its little bubble universe”, I thought he was talking about the Time War, but it turned out that he destroyed it because he discovered that the Time Lords’ existence was built on “the lie of the Timeless Child”, something which was brought up back in The Ghost Monument. We still don’t know when in Gallifrey’s history that was and this complicates the Master’s timeline even further, because the last time we knew the Master was on Gallifrey was Saxon in The End of Time.

If you’ve followed Doctor Who for a while, then you’ll probably know that the Doctor hasn’t always had the best working relationship with the Time Lords and nor has the Master, hence their classification as renegade Time Lords. A lot of Gallifreyans revere the Doctor for his actions during the Time War, but it seems that the Doctor doesn’t have a lot of respect for certain Time Lords, such as Rassilon.

Let’s just hope the Timeless Child mystery doesn’t end up being a rehash of the Hybrid arc with no answer.

Other general thoughts

I wasn’t able to find any tokusatsu parallels last week, but now that the second part is out (along with the 17th episode of Kamen Rider Zero-One), I managed to spot one. Daniel Barton strikes me as a hybrid between Gai Amatsu of Zero-One (ZAIA reference at the start is purely coincidental and memetic) and Adel of Ghost. Amatsu only started coming to the spotlight in the 16th episode, but I’ve got a feeling that he has more sinister plans in store. Adel killed his father, Adonis, (twice) because their views of a perfect world didn’t match.

Connecting with the comparison to Adel, Barton’s conflict with his mother seems to stem from him moving to the US and not recognising his power. If it weren’t for that fact that he was going to start unleashing the Kasaavin on everyone, then that’s a pretty shallow reason to kill his mother, specially given that we don’t hear a lot about what their conflict was.

Noor Inayat Khan was stationed in Paris in 1943. On 13 October 1943, she was arrested after being betrayed to the Germans. She attempted to escape twice, but was taken to Germany and imprisoned in solitary confinement. Ten months after, she was abruptly transferred to Dachau concentration camp and was executed at dawn on the following morning, 13 September 1944, along with three other female agents. You’re welcome.

There are a couple of throwbacks to the RTD and Moffat eras, namely the companions going on the run inspired from The Sound of Drums and the whole timey-wimey “facilitating something in the past” thing from multiple Moffat episodes.

The Master used a perception filter to blend himself in with the Nazis, but when it got jammed by the Doctor, he was left to survive the next 77 years without his TARDIS. Let that sink in.

Some people mentioned that the Doctor wiping Ada and Noor’s minds was unjustified. For Ada, I can justify it because she was optimistic about what she learned (and she had another 18 years to live), but for Noor, I wish that the Doctor left something in her mind at least, given that she won’t see her family again until she dies the year after. Also, they’re historical figures, so the Doctor is obliged not to affect their histories too much; most who have encountered the Doctor never travel in the TARDIS, so their memories aren’t erased. Vincent van Gogh comes to mind in this regard, as he travelled to the future with the Doctor and didn’t have his mind erased. The Doctor took him to 2010 as he wanted to show him how people in the future would remember him. Sadly though, his mental problems continued plaguing him and he committed suicide soon after.

Summary and verdict

This episode reminded me that Chris Chibnall continues to rip off stuff from past eras of Doctor Who. On a first watch, the episode was quite epic, but when I started putting the pieces together, I was left with more questions than answers. Chibnall’s a real Shirakura alright, with a bit of Toshiki Inoue thrown in for good measure. I usually base my final ratings on the first watch of the episode and not with afterthoughts taken into account in order to prevent bias.

We’re finally getting back into the swing of things with the reintroduction of the Timeless Child. At this point, I’m predicting that the Master (and maybe Barton) will be back by the end of this series.

“Everything you think you know is a lie.” Maybe this line from the end of the last episode could also be directed to us as well, particularly in regards to the Master’s complicated timeline caused by his return.

As I said at the start of this review, I’ll be out for two weeks starting next Monday, so the reviews for the third, fourth and fifth episodes will be delayed. I will be watching the episodes, but I won’t be able to write reviews on them until I get back. Hopefully, I’ll get them released on the week of 27 January.

Review: PGA Tour 2K21 (Nintendo Switch)

If you’re looking to hit the virtual links, PGA Tour 2K21 mostly delivers. Despite some unfortunate bugs, this title still offers addictive fun.

While the Nintendo Switch is home to some great arcade and non-traditional golf games, PGA Tour 2K21 is the rare simulation on the hybrid console. I’ve been a series fan since PGA Tour 96 (on 3DO), even if my golf experiences on the last few Nintendo systems have been via Wii Sports or with Mario teeing off. Thankfully, this latest PGA entry takes me back while still moving forward.

True, it’s missing some of the features I remember, like practicing any hole and gimmes. The course fly-bys too, although those may be a relic of mid-’90s TV-style presentations. But it also has some of my favorite courses like TPC River Highlands in Connecticut, and TPC Summerlin in Las Vegas. The former has beautiful views overlooking the CT River and a famously tough final hole with a narrow fairway flanked by bunkers. The latter, a stadium course with great mountain views, has the desert looking better than ever.

All told, you can choose from 15 available (and quite diverse) courses. The 11 Pros are slightly lower than I would have expected, but it’s the course count that will keep you busy. You can even tweak settings for the time of day and weather in local matches, though competing against pros is TOUR play only.

Want an even higher course count? You can design your own, which is both an overwhelming and exciting thought. I’ve only dabbled in this, so I can’t comment much beyond my intrigue. But I appreciate how the options are separated by layout, terrain, and theme to start. I may never fully dive into land sculpting, but it’s there should I ever choose to give the game extra legs. PGA 2K21 is for those who’ve always wanted to consult on course transformations.

I’m getting ahead of myself anyway because there are features that will attract your attention early. MYPLAYER might be a grammatically challenged mode, but its customization options are deep. Some may be for naught though, as a pair of shades hide my crow’s feet. Nonetheless, I appreciate the feature as I’ve taken digital Trev into the Career Mode.

Advancing past pros may seem intimidating to less seasoned players, but helpful tutorials teach how to start and improve play. I admit the user interface could be faster and friendlier – it’s a bit overly complicated trying to fine-tune with precision – but practice makes perfect. The opening tutorial will get you ready to start your career, as you aim to become the FedExCup Champion. As you grow as a golfer throughout the season, you’ll attract rivals and contract sponsors.

In between, why not check out the online community? None of my friends own this game, so I was unable to set up a private match. Which is a shame, as playing with strangers essentially means going against existing leaderboard scores as I couldn’t find anyone online for head to head. It’s not a quick process, and I haven’t been able to find a way of learning the difficulty setting before joining. So I doubt I’ll be going online much. All the same, I’m creating a casual online society, Purely Trev’s Club, with no membership fee, so Pure Nintendo amateur golfers, look me up.

As you gain experience, you’ll appreciate how you can adjust the skill level. There’s a fair amount of choice in how you can do this. For instance, as someone used to the classic 3-click swing meter, some of these modern alterations – flicking the Joy-Con sticks – aren’t superior. But, even tweaking them to more forgiving settings, I’ve still ensured a good challenge by upping CPU difficulty, boosting wind, disabling Pro Vision settings, etc. These nuances help make learning each course oh so satisfying, while also raising XP for bragging rights. They also keep the continual temptation of the risk-reward element (trying to reach a Par 5 green in two, for instance) tempered by the desire for pinpoint accuracy.

Now it’s time to talk about the presentation, which is a mixed bag. The audio side is mostly well done, with ambient effects, occasional music, and commentary that grows on you. Only the voice of John McCarthy suffers, often being too soft to hear against the play-by-play and analyst commentators. He does fare better during local matches.

Visually, PGA Tour 2K21 can look quite lovely at times. But there are inconsistencies with lighting, and shadows move like time-lapse photography. Cutscenes have some stutter. Sometimes golfers will appear completely black like Shadow Link. Such variances remind me I’m playing on Switch, usually in handheld mode.

The biggest audio-visual blunder in my mind is the lack of crowds. You’ll see the clubhouse, gallery seats, cars, etc. But it’s all empty; there isn’t even any crowd audio to add insult to injury. I can grant a pass to the lack of visual crowds as a Switch sacrifice, but the lack of audio too? Unacceptable when I was spoiled by it 25 years ago. I must rightly call out such a choice as a triple bogey move.

Most other complaints are less significant. The number of legalese pages gives a poor first impression, but you won’t see them after the first day. While an actual game can be slow to start, once you’re ready to tee off, the game moves at a good pace. Seeing Ian Poulter more than Justin Thomas (the cover star) is odd, but more of a comical curiosity than anything. Not being able to record footage is a bummer, but you can save replays. Occasionally, replays freeze on a character’s face, so the shot isn’t viewable, but repeat viewings let you decide the angles. Spending up to $49.99 to buy in-game currency is eye-rolling, but easily ignored. Not having a physical version on day one is a mistake, but it’s arriving (better late than never) in September.

One complaint that’s not the least bit minor is the game closing “because an error occurred.” If it only happened once, I could chalk it up to the odd instance, but it’s not a solo situation by any means. So be warned, the bugs in PGA Tour 2K21 aren’t limited to aesthetics alone.

All the same, PGA Tour 2K21 presents many rewarding moments: having a rough start, only to rally on the backside for victory; learning I won a count-back to break my first-place tie; changing from Stoke to Match play so that a crummy couple holes that (under other conditions) would end my game let me remain competitive. And many more that space won’t allow me to mention.

As someone unlikely to play most of these courses in real-life, I relish the chance to visit them in video-game form. From driving off the tee, reading the green, and everything in between, this title offers a lot in spite of itself. If you’re someone who enjoys golf sims, please don’t let some careless glitches prevent you from checking out PGA Tour 2K21 on the Nintendo Switch. With practice, even a real-life duffer like myself can rack up his share of eagles
