Daniel Bachman—When the Roses Come Again (Three Lobed)
Continuing the trajectory of his releases over the past few years, Daniel Bachman moves further into the world of musique concrete, this time around combining played, found, and manipulated sounds on a laptop. Named for a Carter Family song, the words of which provide the titles for the tracks, When the Roses Come Again is a densely layered and highly detailed recording. Snatches of often heavily treated fretless banjo (sometimes with slide-like effects, as on “Till the roses come again”) and guitar share space with other sounds apparently attributable to a mouth bow (a simple one-stringed instrument for which the mouth serves as a resonator), fiddle, and samples of bells and harmonium, though these are less obvious.
The tracks are generally concise (only two exceed four minutes), but they blend together into a kind of suite. There is a satisfying balance among those that are fairly noisy, bordering on industrial (though not aggressive), such as “As I wander, I will ponder,” those that are more melodic and less dense, such as “Happy hearts that feel no pain,” and those in which the emphasis alternates between texture and melody, such as “On a summer over yonder.” Nearly always, a drone of some sort either provides the background or dominates, and the electronics or treated sounds sometimes create a rhythm, as on the closing track. The resulting blend of sweeter, more bucolic tones with shimmering and percussive electronics is initially disconcerting but comes to feel organic, like a kind of palimpsest.
It’s been fascinating to observe Bachman developing his approach to Americana from Takoma school guitar excursions to the very modern sounds featured on his recent recordings. His increasing attention to the overt symbols of roots music exemplified by his use of Carter Family material has coincided with increasing incorporation of technology and its artifacts (such as the recurring buzzes, hums, and rattles heard here). Whereas last year’s Almanac Behind used a similar approach to address the weighty, almost suffocating issue of climate change, the focus here is personal, on the cycle of death and rebirth that defines existence. This is, in other words, still serious music, yet it is not necessarily somber. Probably not coincidentally, When the Roses Come Again provides the perfect soundtrack for a drive through a land of woods, farms, and small towns dotted with Dollar General stores and cell towers.

Stereogum chooses Eli Winter's self-titled LP as their Album of the Week!
"Eli Winter again centers on Winter’s guitar, but this time his playing is the foundation for a sprawling world of sound whipped up by a staggering cast of collaborators. The elevator pitch is that this album is our introduction to Eli Winter as a bandleader, and its six tracks suggest he might be even better in that role than as a solo virtuoso."

every byler creator who has ever felt unappreciated or has never seen their work on a rec list or has stayed awake for hours working on something for it to get no interaction or has had their work passed up in favor of the big fandom favorites or has never been taken a chance on or has ever come last in a poll they didn’t ask to be on or has felt self conscious about posting or about calling themselves a creator if what they’re posting is not a magnum opus or has created something for themselves and still hoped deep down that people would love it: get behind me. i’ll protect u

look I would've been no better than adaine, but you would think that the party of adventurers who just this summer released the night yorb from a tattoo on one of their chests, would be more careful about just saying names of powerful beings

i've been meaning to post something about this since the first episode last week but shout out to wardrobe on Last Twilight for one of the best fake ear plugs i've seen in a show! it's hard to get the fake ones to give the right impression in the lobe since they're a front piece and a back piece that sit on top of the skin to simulate the jewelry that goes through the stretched hole but they've managed it well enough that i've been staring at various gifs and screenshots all week trying to decide if i thought they actually stretched Jimmy's lobe for this or not 🤣
but yeah they've put the pieces of this together tight enough to give a subtle little indent in the skin around the front, which simulates the way that a stretched hole is shaped as opposed to a regular piercing hole which tends to leave the lobe relatively flat, with any jewelry in it not impacting the surface of the skin much if at all.
besides photos of him taken since filming where he has nothing in his ear, the main tell that it IS fake is the fact that the shape of the lobe is still matching his other ear. being at the gauge he would need for a piece of jewelry that size would be probably either a 0 or 00 (8mm-9mm) and it would cause the edge of his lobe to change shape slightly, which it hasn't.
i know this is a weird detail to pay attention to but as a person with stretched lobes it caught my eye and it's nice to see someone get it right for once!

So an update on my Ogerpon cosplay! Took me forever, like over a month straight to figure out how I wanted to do the eyes. Initially I went with a normal toon eye using buckram like below
But I didnt like it. It was fine but I didn't think the eyes were vibrant enough, plus with Ogerpon's head being an orb, having the eyes sit flat just looked...off. So i reworked them despite modeling eyeblanks and paying $$$ to get them 3D printed. Luckily I was able to repurpose them by sanding them down and usng them as a frame.
I found out about dye sublimation eyes which are popular in the fursuit community. Alas my printer doesn't support that sort of ink (love my 15 year old hp i got for free) and idk i wanted some depth to my eyes, almost like a bjd. So after lots and lots of failures I wound up with this:
Curved pc fan mesh with craft foam and a clear acrylic dome on top. There's a layer of clear vinyl in there for a slight holo effect. I was trying to get that on the irises with yellow vinyl but it was a mess. Imo the craft foam looked best. The felt is light brown because if you look close at Ogerpon's design in game her eyes have a brown outline and the black "eyelashes" are actually markings on her skin.
But hey the leaf under her hood came together pretty quick after i shaped the foam.
The stem attaches to the head via a carriage bolt so it stays on nice and sturdy. Next will be fitting the head to my own head and lining the inside!

Danny Paul Grody — Arc of Day (Three Lobed)
Arc of Day by Danny Paul Grody
Danny Paul Grody got his start in Tarentel and the Drift, both abstract post-rock bands out of San Francisco who leaned towards the quieter end of the guitar rock experiment. Just over a decade ago, he ventured out on his own in The Fountain, a gorgeous, mostly solo guitar album that found serenity in repeated picked patterns and subtle threads of melody. Since then, he’s made a half dozen albums under his own name, showcasing a self-taught facility with finger-picked styles and an expansive open-minded outlook that seeks the boundaries of blues, jazz, folk and drone.
Arc of Day starts with Grody on his own, but slowly adds other textures—drums and bass from his mates in the Drift, Rich and Trevor Montgomery, an especially haunting clarinet from Jonathan Sielaff of Golden Retriever and, on one track, Chuck Johnson on pedal steel.
He begins on acoustic 12-string in “Daybreak” a serene and introspective reverie in simple, octave-jumping figures, repeated like clockwork and surrounded with shivering clouds of overtone. “Light Blooms” brings in his collaborators, adding a faint touch of electric distortion and a whisper of shaken maracas to his mandala-like guitar motifs. Grody sets the piece in motion, executing the same rhythmic figure again and again, keeping it going (and also very still) through changes in mood and key. We hear the clarinet for the first time in this second cut. It cuts through with pensive clarity and, at one point, frays into a vibrato, the held note unfurling like a pennant in strong wind.
One more player—the natural world—joins in “California Angelica.” We drift into the piece on a roar of surf, a little foghorn tucked into it. “Cathedral Tree” adds the unmistakable silvery sheen of Chuck Johnson’s axe to one of the disc’s most rock-like entries. “Slow Walk” electrifies Grody’s patient picking, adding a buzz and heft of dissonance to its limpid surfaces. The disc isn’t long, but it builds its own calm, centered world. It quiets the noise and pulls you in. Beautiful.
