one of the most heart-wrenching things about thg universe is that you feel the loss of who each character would be outside the circumstances of their birth almost as acutely as you feel the loss of the characters themselves.
sure, we know what lucy gray and her family would be doing in a different world; she’d be dancing and singing and making music which defines a cultural identity. but what about the others? would haymitch have been a hilarious, loving father with a family had he not been forced to survive 47 other children’s brutal deaths? would finnick have been a charismatic and beloved actor, bringing joy to immeasurable people on his own terms? would beetee and wiress have worked together to develop technology to make it easier to connect loved ones far and wide? what would reaper and annie have given to the world, or thresh, or rue, or even coral or cato or glimmer or clove?
if katniss wasn’t half-starving and forced to spend each day hunting to feed her family, would archery be her true passion? or if she’d been a well-sustained little girl with access to art supplies, would she have spent her time sketching captivating dresses? she picks up ropes and making fish hooks quickly—could her dexterity have lent itself to knitting, sewing, or crocheting with vibrant yarns and fabrics? there’s so much evidence that katniss finds clothing inspiring and empowering, even when she dismisses it as frivolous. she likes being pretty, she just hates the circumstances under which she’s made to look pretty. cinna shows her that beauty has its own power, and there are several moments in her interactions with cinna and his designs that make me wonder who she’d be if she had space for art and creativity in her life.
conversely, peeta has had art in his life since he was a small child, but for him, art has always been entangled with his trauma. he could bake and decorate well because he learned from his mother, a mother who beat him his whole life. but his talent grows, not only as a survival tool in the first games, but when he paints rue on the floor of the training center before the second games. his art becomes not only a symbol of his trauma, but a means of resistance and solidarity. in a world where peeta’s intrinsic kindness and loving heart had been nurtured and welcomed rather than abused, could he have been a painter, helping people find collective meaning in the simple realities of life?
could katniss and peeta have still found each other in another world, a world without the horrors they were raised with, and bonded over their love of art? could they have been each other’s muses?
maybe they find their way to share art, after the events of mockingjay, as part of their process of healing and falling in love with each other. when they’re finally safe and have been for a long time, maybe katniss fashions peeta an easel for him to paint in their living room. after months of watching him gaze out the window and paint the changing leaves, katniss takes to knitting on a rocking chair in the other corner of the living room to steady her restless hands. they work silently as the days go by, quietly exchanging the things they’ve made to give each other the reassurance and love neither could ever fully convey with words.
and maybe one day, when they learn there’s a baby on the way due in midwinter, katniss takes a page from peeta’s sketchpad and starts to plan a series of sweaters and hats and socks she can knit for the baby. and peeta goes to the little nursery upstairs and starts working on a mural, so the baby will have something beautiful to look at every day. they work together to design the perfect baby blanket for their child, to ensure they will always be wrapped in a layer of protection and love by their parents.
but even if they find creativity and beauty in their lives after the end of mockingjay, the art they make will simply never be what that art could have been had they not faced what they faced. art comes from suffering, yes, but the human condition has so much suffering as is, and we’d never know what kind of art they’d make if they hadn’t experienced trauma of a distinctly sadistic and inhuman nature. but maybe their children, raised in a better world with love and protection and safety and joy and creativity and expression, will be the ones to create the art peeta and katniss never could.

Dates and Numbers - Fourth Wing
I am currently rereading The Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros, and can say, I am way down the rabbit hole. As I was rereading the first few chapters, I really focused on world building and foreshadowing that I missed the first time around. I started to question, what time a year is all this happening in? How is the quadrant organized? So, I did the math:
Timeline/Dates
On page 155, We learn that Threshing happens on October 1st every year. I used this as the base line for the following numbers, please note that these are approximates. On page 47, violet says that they will face the Gauntlet "when the leaves turn colors in two months." This alone places the Gauntlet in late September... but how late?
Reading further on page 47, we learn that if they pass the Gauntlet, all the cadets immediately go to presentation. Two Days later is Threshing. This means the Gauntlet is on September 28th. That means, looking back 2 months, that conscription day is on August 4th.
Page 47, for context, is set during the very first death scroll reading. Meaning Violet has been a cadet for less than 24 hours at this point.
Quadrant Organization:
Right off the bat, we learn that Basgiath War College is home to four quadrants: Scribe, Infantry, Healers, and, of course, the Riders. We know very little on the Healers quadrant, but even less on the Infantry Quadrant. (If I was a betting man, I would wager we will learn more about both in the following books.) We know a little bit on the Scribes, their values, and their mission through Violets training and her father. However, we learned quite a bit about the riders quadrant.
On page 32 we see the first mention of Squads, Sections, and Wings from Dain Aetos. (Notice how he doesn't explain it, just expects Rhiannon to know- Jerk.) Anyway, On page 40, Violet being the sweet soul she is, explains to Rhiannon, and us, that there are four wings. Each wing has three sections and each section has 3 squads. The number of cadets in each squad depends on the number of candidates that made it across the parapet and the cadets that are alive from previous years.
Using this year's number of cadets (new and returning,) there are between 15 and 16 cadets in each squad. That means that there are 540 to 576 cadets, in total, in the riders quadrant. Within each section there are 45 to 48 cadets, and within each wing there are 135 to 144 cadets.
There are 4 wingleaders - with a senior wingleader for the quadrant (Page 40), - there are 12 section leaders (three Flame, three Claw, and three tail, to be exact (page 40),) and there are 36 squad leaders.

League of Legends Patch Notes – 13.7 Update Nerfs Meta Junglers, Phew

As we approach MSI there’s a new round of League of Legends patch notes to sink our teeth into – literally, as the MOBA‘s beloved Cats vs Dogs skinline has made a comeback post-April 1. If you pick up the Nidalee skin you’ll probably get the chance to make good use of it, as meta junglers Lee Sin, Sejuani, and Vi are taking the nerf hammer to the face in 13.7. Lee Sin, Sejuani, and Vi all get nerfed I’d be a liar if I said writing that didn’t give me an awful sense of satisfaction. All three junglers have dominated the meta – especially in pro play – and as a result are getting taken down a few pegs ahead of MSI. Lee Sin’s base attack damage and armour have been knocked down by a couple of points each, and Vi has been shifted towards AD to negate her building tank items but dealing out huge amounts of damage. The priest and the Levite receive their share of negative interpretations that go well beyond the justified critique of their failure to act. Again, stereotypes get in the way. Here are the two most common misreadings and why they are unhelpful.
First, a number of scholars talk about the peasant dislike of the “priestly elite.” This view comes more from contemporary distaste for religious hierarchies than it does from Luke’s text or Jesus’s context.
There is nothing that makes a priest and even less a Levite part of the “elite.” Priests and Levites may have had neither wealth nor status. In Judaism, the priesthood is not a vocation; it is an inherited position. The priestly line descends from Aaron, the brother of Moses. One is a priest if one’s father was a priest. Levites, who form a lesser category of priests, also receive their role according to their paternal line; they are descended from Aaron’s ancestor Levi, the third son of Jacob. All other Jews, except Jews by choice, are descended from Jacob’s other children; they are Israelites. …
Josephus, who was himself an elite priest, mentions other priests who were poverty-stricken. According to his Antiquities, the high priest Ananias, who served from about 47 to 52 and who, according to the book of Acts (22–23), tried Paul in Jerusalem, sent his servants to the Temple threshing floors, where they “took away the tithes that belonged to the priests by violence, and did not refrain from beating such as would not give these tithes to them . . . so that [some of the] priests that had previously been supported with those tithes died for lack of food.”There are “priests,” and then there are “high priests”; the social positions of the two groups should not be confused. … As for the distinction among the priestly ranks, Luke invariably describes the priests involved in Jesus’s death as “chief priests” or the “high priest.” Our priest is an ordinary priest who does what is all too ordinary: he fails to act when he should.
The second, more common, and just as misguided explanation for the priest’s and Levite’s failure to help is that they are following Jewish Law.
From both classroom and pulpit comes the claim that the priest and the Levite pass by the man in the ditch, because they are afraid of contracting corpse contamination and so violating purity laws. A few examples demonstrate the pervasiveness of this view.
A 2005 book with the optimistic title The Wide, Wide Circle of Divine Love: A Biblical Case for Religious Diversity states: “If the traveler were already dead, or he died while they were attending him, then they would have become unclean, contaminated, because they touched a dead body. This would have made it necessary for them to seek ritual cleansing before they could resume their responsibilities.”
What “ritual duties” the priest and the Levite would have had is unclear, since the parable explicitly notes that the priest is going “down” (katabaino) from Jerusalem, not up to the Temple. Why ritual cleansing is a problem is unstated. … To follow Torah, the priest should have checked to see if the man was alive and, finding him alive, should have helped him. Should he have discovered a corpse, he should have covered it and then immediately gone for help. ... Further, Samaritans were also bound by laws concerning corpse contamination; just as the Samaritan found the question irrelevant, so should we in our attempt to understand the parable. ... Regarding corpses, Jewish Law requires that a dead body be treated with utmost respect. The point is perhaps best seen in the book of Tobit; the book’s titular hero, a Jewish male Antigone, risks his life by attending to unburied corpses (1.16–20). ... The Mishnah, Nazir 7.1, reads: “A high priest or a Nazirite [a person under a vow of utmost purity] may not contract uncleanness because of their dead [relatives], but they may contract uncleanness because of a neglected corpse.” The Babylonian Talmud is even stronger: “As long as there are no other people to look after the burial of a corpse, the duty is incumbent on the first Jew that passes by, without exception, to perform the burial” (Nazir 43b; Jerusalem Talmud, Nazir 56a).
Judaism still takes this mandate seriously. That is why Jews stood vigil at Ground Zero until every corpse was recovered. Burying the dead is one of the highest mitzvot, most important commandments in Judaism, for it is one of the few acts that cannot be repaid by the person who benefits from it.
...The best explanation I’ve heard for the refusal of the priest and the Levite to come to the aid of the man in the ditch comes from Martin Luther King Jr., who preached: “I’m going to tell you what my imagination tells me. It’s possible these men were afraid. . . . And so the first question that the priest [and] the Levite asked was, ‘If I stop to help this man, what will happen to me?’ . . . But then the Good Samaritan came by, and he reversed the question: ‘If I do not stop to help this man, what will happen to him?’”
King went on, “If I do not stop to help the sanitation workers, what will happen to them?” King then went to Memphis, and it was there he was assassinated. There are bandits on the road. ...
So if the issue is not priestly purity, why did Jesus speak explicitly of a priest and Levite?
The duo anticipate, in good folkloric fashion, the appearance of the third figure. We have already seen the “rule of three” in our study of the parables of the lost: the first two set up the third. For the Good Samaritan, the rule works even better, for in its usual function the first two figures fail and the third will succeed. Examples include the decidedly nonkosher “Three Little Pigs” and the equally nonkosher suitors for Portia’s hand in the Merchant of Venice. Name two, and the third comes automatically.
For a more modern analogy, to say in a church context, “Father, Son, and . . .” evokes the third, “Holy Spirit.” Or, for a less theological albeit Jewish example, “Larry and Moe” evokes “Curley.”
For Jesus’s audience, and for any synagogue congregation today, the third of the group is obvious. Mention a priest and a Levite, and anyone who knows anything about Judaism will know that the third person is an Israelite. Ezra 10.5 speaks of the “leading priest, the Levites, and all Israel”; Nehemiah 11.3 states that “in the towns of Judah all lived on their property in their towns: Israel, the priests, the Levites . . .”
Both priest and Levite should have stopped to help. The audience, surprised at this lack of compassion, would have presumed both that the third person would be an Israelite and that he would help. However, Jesus is telling a parable, and parables never go the way one expects. Instead of the anticipated Israelite, the person who stops to help is a Samaritan. In modern terms, this would be like going from Larry and Moe to Osama bin Laden. ...

Saint Myron, Bishop of Crete

     Sainted Myron, Bishop of Crete, a wonderworker, in his youth was a family man, and worked at farming. He was known for his goodness, and he assisted everyone who turned to him for help. One time a thieves burst in upon his threshing floor, and Saint Myron himself helped them raise up a sack of grain upon their shoulders. By his generosity the saint so shamed the thieves, that in future they began to lead honourable lives. Out of profound respect for the saint, the Cretan people urged him to accept the dignity of presbyter in his native city of Raucia, and afterwards they chose him bishop of Crete. Wisely ruling his flock, Saint Myron received from the Lord the gift of wonderworking. At the time of a flood on the River Triton, the saint stopped its flow and went upon it as upon dry land, and then he sent a man back to the river with his staff with a command for the river to resume its course. Saint Myron reposed to God at age 100 in about the year 350.

The Monk Gregory the Sinaite

     The Monk Gregory the Sinaite was born in about the year 1268 in the seacoast village of Clazomeneia near the city of Smyrna (Asia Minor), of rich parents. In about the year 1290 he was taken into captivity by the Hagarites and sent off to Laodicea. After gaining his freedom, the saint arrived on the island of Cyprus, where he was tonsured a monk. He set off afterwards to Mount Sinai and there assumed the great schema. Having fulfilled his obediences of cook and baker, and then as writer-copyist, surpassing all in reading and knowledge of Scriptural and patristic books. The strictness of his life (fasting, vigil, psalmody, standing at prayer) brought some to astonishment and others to envy. Departing the monastery, the monk visited Jerusalem. For some time he lived on the island of Crete, and afterwards he made the rounds on Athos with its monasteries and ascetics. By such manner he acquired the experience of the monastic life of many centuries from the ancient monasteries. Only after this did the Monk Gregory the Sinaite settle himself in a solitary place for "hesychia" ["mystic quiet" doing the Jesus Prayer] – a cell for silence and unhindered pursuit of mental prayer, combined with hard monastic work.      The precious legacy of the Monk Gregory is in his precepts about the inner life, 15 chapters about silence, and 142 chapters about the commandments, where he says, that "one seeking to comprehend the commandments without fulfilling them, and through study and reading to find that which is desired, is like a man imagining a fantasy in place of truth". The monk is reknown also as a remarkable writer of song, – to him is ascribed the "Mete it is in truth" ("Dostoino est vo istinu"), and a canon to the MostHoly Trinity read at Sunday vigil, and a canon to the holy Cross. In a canon-book (from the year 1407) of the Monk Kirill (Cyril) of Belozersk (+ 9 June 1427) is found the "Canon of propitiation to the Lord Jesus Christ, – a work of Gregory the Sinaite". Through his concern for the spreading of monastic deeds, the monk founded several cells on Athos, and also four laura-monasteries in Thrace. The Monk Gregory the Sinaite died in the year 1310 (some historians suggest the year 1346) at his so-called "Concealed" ("Parariseia") monastery, founded in the mountains of Macedonia for the strict followers of his life.
