Not sure what’s weirder about this Creation email I received advertising PittCon- that for no apparent reason Sidney Crosby is in the logo, or that they call JDM “Daddy”

Bit of a slower week as travel tends to mess up my schedule/routine.  Anyway, here are a few things that caught my eye this week. Does Silicon Valley Have a Contract-Worker Problem? Apparently I’m not the only one that thinks this notion of hustling is a problem.  While I understand the motivation for companies to maximize profits, I also think there is a responsibility for any company to treat workers and communities well, regardless of IRS classification.  After all, if corporations are people (snicker) , we all need to treat each other better. Also related: The Dangerous Rise of the Temporary Technology Worker The Dumbest Person in Your Building Is Passing Out Keys to Your Front Door! I Have Four Jobs. . . Is This The "New Economy"? Father and Daughter Reunion This piece resonated with me as I have two young children at home and my work schedule doesn’t always enable me to be around as much as I would like.  Glad to see this former CEO made the right choices for his family.  It’s unfortunate he did not realize them sooner. ‘The Biggest Loser’ Could Be TV’s Most Important Show Ever The headline caught my attention as I do think “The Biggest Loser” is one of the smarter “reality” television shows.  Specifically, it really pays attention to group dynamics.  For example, they always mix up how they do team challenges as it’s been proven time and time again that competition isn’t always the best motivator.  They also do a good job (in my opinion) of tapping into the intrinsic motivations of people to help keep the weight off.  So imagine my surprise when I discovered that the article was more of a critique of the show rather than one giving it praise.  Specifically, this particular article talks about the role of physiology and biology as factors for obesity and how the show should do a better job of portraying that.  Upon reflecting on that further, I would tend to agree.  Overall the article was a good read that gave me a lot to consider. How Gary Hart’s Downfall Forever Changed American Politics Fascinating article about a political icon from my youth.  I’m not a political historian but I’d have to say the author makes a compelling argument about how this was a major turning point in how we engage with politicians today.  I can’t help but wonder, “What if…” Ready for Rain: Why Seattleites Crave the End of Summer This past week, fall official started and it came back to Seattle like clockwork with rains during the week.  It was this that spurred my friend Lee to write an ode to rain and I was amazed at how many of my friends reposted this article across various social networks in support.  Now I like Lee and have a lot of respect for him, but I disagree.  While I can appreciate the rain and am thankful for our lush scenery, the wet bus commutes I can do without.  I can also do without the horrendous traffic that inevitably results in people (ironically) not driving well in the rain.  Lastly, I can do without the “Seattle Freeze” that I think comes with a desire for people to hunker down and be cozy with familiar parties.  If we are to be a city that thrives, we need an active mixing of people and ideas to really take us to the next level.
