Green Turtle (Chelonia mydas) 🐢
Honestly throughout my scuba diving journey, I haven't seen green turtles while diving, only hawksbill until my most recent dive trip. I got to see a total of 3 green turtles underwater and it was cool experience:) A bonus nesting mother out of water as well. 4 green turtles on the trip:) Omnivorous when they are juveniles and move more into a herbivorous diet of seagrass and algae as adults.

My first night dive at Juara Tioman area at the JSA house reef 'Aquarium' :) back in May. I definitely have a hard time IDing squids 🐙, probably a species of reef squid from genus Sepioteuthis. If you look closely, the little black pigment spots are chromatophores that aid in their camouflage. Chromatophores are skin color cells that can expand or retract to show different levels of color, reef squids and many other cephalopods can change their colors and patterns extremely rapidly.

Pulau Tioman
Spent a few days on the island of Tioman; here are a couple of pics from my trip.
Tumblr media
Sammy and I missed the 8am ferry at Mersing Jetty, so we had to drive another 38km+ to Tanjung Gemok Jetty to catch the 11am ferry. We had to pay the conservation fee to enter the island (RM30 for foreigners, RM5 for locals). I found the design of the ticket quite nice, so I decided to save it to use as a bookmark. (Note: Ferry timings change frequently so it would be a good idea to call ahead to check.)
Tumblr media
One of the islands along you'll see along the way.
Tumblr media
Glimpse of Tioman as we neared the island. Absolutely beautiful.
Tumblr media
Gorgeous!
Tumblr media
I was a little sunburnt because Sammy had the brilliant idea of renting a bike to ride over the hill (from Tekek where the ferry dropped us, over to Kampung Juara where our accommodation was located) and on the way up, the stupid bike couldn't carry our weight and started stalling. The slopes were incredibly steep as well, so every time the stupid bike started stalling, I had to get down and walk up the slope (with my backpack nonetheless). I only had to do this like 7 or 8 times until we finally reached the top and the slope started going downwards from there. The entire ordeal took about, perhaps, 30 mins, but that was enough for me to get sunburn on my arms and neck. -_-
BUT WHO HAS TIME TO WHINE ABOUT SUNBURN WHEN YOU'RE IN PARADISE!
Tumblr media
Day 2 at Kampung Juara. Lunch view.
Tumblr media
Pictures do not do justice to this beautiful view!
Tumblr media
Sammy and I came across this spot near our accommodation where a freshwater river met the sea, essentially making it a brackish water type of habitat. I hated being here because the water was deep and the bridge was kind of shaky. I basically have a phobia of deep water where you can't see the bottom. God knows what creepy shit lurks beneath.
Tumblr media
Another gorgeous day, albeit after a bit of rain. Did some snorkeling and kayaking. Kayaking was harder than I thought and I got a bit seasick after a while. Still, I quite enjoyed it.
Tumblr media
Final morning of my trip! There was a 40-minute blackout where we were staying and our room had gotten quite stuffy, so I got up and decided to go for a stroll instead. It was a little cloudy, but I was happy to be treated to this view! Sammy was still asleep so he totally missed the sunrise.
***
Overall, it was a fun and relaxing trip. Slept like a log for the most part, drank lots of beer and of course, ate like a pig. Food however, was a little pricey, which is hardly surprising considering that Tioman is tiny (compared to its larger sisters) so logistics and transportation drives up the prices of just about everything on the island except for alcohol which is duty free.
Would I visit again?
YES. 10/10 will recommend, just for its pristine, unspoiled beauty.

sorry this is still yelling abt hw hours but the other thing that’s always kinda annoyed me is how much the storyline flip flops between dravanians being monsters you can kill like everything else and real sentient beings with cultural fixtures and lives and instead settles on this weird in-between where it’s only the important dragons that matter and every other dragon (all of the horde, basically) are mindless beasts just there for you to kill
