I Won't Let You Fall
Abby Anderson x Owen Moore
Summary: Abby and Owen go on a date in a Modern Au. In this Au, Jerry's still alive, Owen and Abby never broke up, and Mel and Abby are best friends who work at the children's hospital.
An: I wrote this for @abbystanaccount I'm not used to writing straight couples so please forgive me if it's bad🙏
"Stop it!" Abby laughed, holding onto the rails of the gazebo. "Owen, you're gonna get us in trouble!"
"What are they gonna do?" Owen smiled, climbing further along the side. "Send us home? We're renting this spot, remember?"
"Yeah, and we're gonna have to pay more money if you break the fuckin' railing." Abby argued. She watched Owen with a fond smile as he sat on the cement ledge on the outside of the gazebo, dipping his feet in the water. He'd climbed over the railing of the lakeside gazebo they'd rented, wanting to "see the fishes".
"You calling me fat?" Owen teased, tossing his shoes behind him. Abby dodged one, turning to watch as it landed near one of the benches.
"Clearly." Abby chuckled sarcastically.
"I am hurt." Owen said, putting a hand over his heart. "You've hurt me, Abigail." He turned, looking back at her with a smile. He squinted, the sun shining on half of his face.
Abby poked her foot between the wooden balusters, kicking Owen's back lightly. "I'm gonna push you in." She joked. A light gust of wind distracted her for a moment, making her tuck her hair back behind her ear. She'd worn it down, something she didn't often have the luxury of doing since it would get in the way at work. Once, it'd gotten stuck in a filing cabinet while she was looking for information on a patient's prescription. Another time, a younger kid yanked on it, almost hard enough to make her scalp bleed.
Days like this, where Abby and Owen could just rest, were rare. So, the moment their schedules aligned, Owen begged Abby to go on a date with him instead of staying in their house or going to the gym like she usually did. He didn't blame her, her job was exhausting. But, he wanted her to be able to have more going on than just work. So, when she agreed, he went all out. He decorated the gazebo an hour early, driving back to the house to pick her up and grabbing her favorite foods on the way. Abby hated to admit it, but she really was having a good time.
"Do not push me in!" Owen laughed. "We'll have to go home early!" Abby smiled, resting her arms on the white wooden railing. The paint was chipped in some spots, around the edges and in spots where couples had engraved their initials into the wood with tiny hearts; a testament to their love.
Abby had read them while Owen was trying to figure out how the big white curtain around the entryway worked. There was no heart with an 'A+O' in it. It made her a little bit prideful, imagining she and Owen were the first 'A+O' to stand in that spot. Owen reached up, putting a hand on Abby's arm and pulling her out of her thoughts. "Come sit by me." He smiled.
"Hell no." Abby chuckled. "I'll for sure break this thing climbing over it."
"You will not." Owen assured. "C'mon, I'll help you." He stood up carefully, turning and holding onto the railing with one hand, the other held out for Abby.
Abby backed up, looking at the ledge. "It's too narrow." She frowned, looking back up at Owen with worried eyes.
"It's not." Owen said. "I'm standing on it fine. And you just saw me sitting." He reached for her hand once more. "Have I ever let you fall?" He asked.
"No." Abby admitted, shaking her head.
"Exactly." Owen smiled. "And I won't this time, either." Abby nodded, taking Owen's hand nervously. She kicked off her shoes, stepping closer. With his help, she climbed over the railing without losing her balance. The ledge wasn't too high above the water, but the idea of falling in still made her nervous. "See?" Owen chuckled, guiding Abby to sit down. Her legs dangled off the ledge, feet dipping into the water. "You're okay." Owen smiled. "What'd I tell ya?"
"Shut up." Abby said with a breathy laugh, clinging to Owen's shirt.
Owen leaned her against his side, wrapping an arm around her shoulders. "I don't think my shirt is gonna save you from falling." He teased. Abby scoffed, pinching his side. "Ow! Why do you do that?!" Owen laughed.
"Cause it always gets you to shut up." Abby smiled, resting her head on his shoulder. "Seriously, if you let me fall I will kill you."
"I won't let you fall." Owen promised with an adoring smile. "Just enjoy the view. We're not too far up. See?"
Abby looked down hesitantly, holding her breath. Her feet barely skimmed the water, but it was there. It was closer than it looked from the benches. "Yeah." She nodded, letting the breath out. "I'm okay."
"Unless I push you." Owen teased. He wouldn't actually push Abby, and she knew that. He just loved to tease her.
"I'll pull you in with me." Abby warned.
"Oh, good! I'll catch us some fish for dinner." Owen smiled.
Abby snorted, holding onto Owen's waist. "You're such a dork." She smiled.
"You love it." Owen replied.
"Unfortunately." Abby chuckled. She pressed her nose into his neck, letting out a content sigh. "Are you wearing my cologne?" She asked.
"Maybe." Owen chuckled. "I forgot where I put mine."
"Bathroom cupboard in the corner." Abby said. "You hid it from Manny so he wouldn't use all of it before that date he went on."
"That was like... three weeks ago." Owen laughed. "How do you remember that?"
"Cause the bottle fell on my head yesterday when I went to grab a towel." Abby chuckled.
"Ouch." Owen replied, looking over the top of Abby's head. He noticed a small dark spot he'd pointed out earlier. "That spot?" He asked. Abby nodded. Owen kissed her head softly. "You're so accident-prone this week." He teased. "Maybe we shouldn't be sitting here."
Abby groaned. "I know! It's like the world wants me dead!" She sighed, closing her eyes.
"Did you piss off some kid's parent?" Owen asked jokingly.
"No, but Mel did the other day." Abby gasped. "I didn't tell you what happened! So, she's working with a patient and trying to set up a date for them to do some surgery or whatever and the minute she suggested surgery this kid's mom flipped. It got so bad I heard her cussing Mel out from the hallway! I had to go in there and shield her!"
"Jeez." Owen chuckled. "Some people are crazy about their kids, huh?"
"I know she was worried, but... Jesus Christ, lady. It's no reason to try to hit your kid's surgeon." Abby sighed. "If there's any chance in Hell of us having kids, don't let me end up like that." She chuckled.
"Promise." Owen smiled, nodding. He knew damn well they wouldn't be having any kids. And he was okay with that. "Okay." He sighed. "Enough of the fishies." He stood up slowly, helping Abby up. "I'll help you over first." He smiled. Abby nodded, taking his hand as he helped her back over the railing. "Y'know, if you stopped working out I'd be able to lift you over this." He joked.
"I wouldn't trust you to." Abby laughed, keeping a hand on Owen's back as he climbed over. He stood in front of her, laughing.
"You're so mean to me." Owen smiled. "You ready to go home?" He asked, his hand still holding hers. Abby nodded, pulling him along. "Oh wait!" Owen stopped, pulling Abby back. "Let me see your knife?" Abby handed him the small pocket knife she kept on her car keys. He took it, leaning over the railing and carving something.
Abby looked over Owen's houlder curiously, trying to see what he was doing. When he backed up to show her, her face lit up. Among the dozens of initials and hearts, he'd carved a lopsided somewhat-heart, 'A+O' written in the center.
