everytime i remember newt's death in tmr, i get so sad & upset, but then i remember that he wanted thomas to kill him anyway.

he tried taking his own life back in the maze & assumably has dealt with depression all throughout the maze runner series, likely getting worse after seeing the amount of people that he loved & knew dying right in front of his very eyes.

his death was sad, of course, but even if he did make it to the safe haven, he'd still likely feel trapped—not physically, but mentally. it'd require so much in him to not have nightmares about the maze, seeing alby die, seeing chuck die, and everything that he's been through & recover from it.

i think the way newt died was so tragically beautiful, because it's already been stated that he's been suicidal since he got stuck in the maze, and him begging thomas to kill him was his only selfish act.

and, it wasn't even thomas who actually killed newt. it was himself after trying to attack thomas with the knife.

in a way, newt did get the ending that he deserved—just not in the way that any good character would get. newt finally freed himself from being trapped behind the maze, both physically and in his own mind. but it had to cost his own life for it.
