Other tips aim to flush as much fluid as possible out just to make the actual appearance of a bloat go away. Some tips aim to cause a BM and clear the intestines. These tips don't necessarily bode well together because they contradict one another. If you want to reduce bloating, the first thing you should consider is, why are you bloated? Do you want to help your body out, and fix this issue, or just rid of the symptoms of the problem?(I don't recommend the latter for your health of course!) Here's advice for certain situations, depending on the reason. (: A.) I'm hella dehydrated. If you're dehydrated, your body will hold more water weight. If you replenish fluids you can reduce this effect. You'll need to give your body some time. Typically this can't be remedied over night. But it's WORTH it and gets your body working more like a well oiled machine again!(: Here's tips for that. 1.) Avoid diuretics.(alcohol, some kinds of tea, water pills, soda, anything caffeinated, etc.) 2.) Drink plenty of water. Actually, MORE than plenty. Make sure your urine is running completely clear for a few days to monitor this. Don't over hydrate though- this can be fatal. 3.) Limit excess sodium/salt in your diet. 4.) Make sure you're replacing fluids lost through sweat in exercise. 5.) Avoid use of stimulant laxatives or Epsom Salt as a laxative. If it's a laxative that isn't fiber or a gentle stool softener, no bueno. Most laxatives have some effect of drawing water into the intestines to move things along. If you have no water to spare, this is not helpful. 6.) Avoid nicotine if possible. I smoke myself, so I know this one is not always exactly possible lol. Although nicotine can instigate a BM for some folks, it is a mild diuretic. B.) I haven't had a BM in god knows how long. 1.) Follow all the steps above to help your body have enough fluids to instigate a BM. Without water your body can't flush the waste out. It doesn't have fluids to get the "water slide" in operation. Yeah...TMI, sorry haha. 2.) Get lots of fiber. Certain fruits and veggies are high in this and of course, there are supplements. Benefiber is fabulous, hype and all. 3.) Massage your lower abdomen to stimulate things along. Don't be stingy in the time you spend on this. Could take more than a minute or so, and it can't hurt. 4.) Take a long, hot bath. Try doing number 3, during. 5.) Consider laxatives as a last resort only, starting off as gentle as possible.(not stimulant laxatives) use only as directed and not if you fear this to be dangerous or triggering without help of a doctor. Only use laxatives if you have been constipated for several days. I say this because although laxative use is notoriously bad for those with an ED, being very backed up is also toxic to the body. 6.) I know this one is odd, but try eating something that has a history of upsetting your belly and causing a BM... With haste, if you catch my drift. For me, certain spicy foods can do this. If I consume hot salsa, I'm running to the restroom within 5 minutes. 7.) Peppermint tea. It helps digestion without the same diuretic effect as other teas. Do NOT use if you have bile duct or gallstone issues. C.) I just want excess fluid out of me, pronto. 1.) Be careful. If you do this while dehydrated, it's dangerous and ill advised. 2.) Take in natural diuretics. Coffee, tea, anything caffeinated. 3.) If you have severe edema and know it's safe to use water pills(have been to a professional for this before)use them as directed. Do NOT take more than recommended dose and limit caffeine while they run their course. 4.) Drink a cup of strong coffee with a smoke or vape pen. Works for me, almost every time. 5.) Consider a doctor if issue persists. D.) I have severe edema and it's a chronic, serious issue. 1.) Seek a professional opinion. E.) I'm about to get or currently am on my period. 1.) Stay hydrated! The market for both prescription and natural sleep aids has exploded in recent years. I personally prefer to address health issues naturally if possible, and sleep is no exception. I've taken Ambien once, and it left me a bit loopy and dissatisfied with my sleep.
Many people have taken melatonin pills, which are usually billed as a natural “supplement” to induce sleep, especially when traveling to a different time zone. But clinically, the effectiveness and safety of this hormone for sleep treatments is under debate, and it is not recommended as a long-term fix. In fact, melatonin is actually a prescription drug in some countries.

Magnesium chloride flakes (you can purchase online) -- do not just use any old Epsom salts for this
Dissolve equal parts of the magnesium chloride flakes and distilled/purified water by boiling the flakes in the water. Try 1/4 cup of each for a small bottle that holds a couple ounces. After the liquid cools, pour it into the bottle.
To use, I apply 2-3 droppers full of the oil, rubbing it directly into my skin on my stomach and legs right before bed. Sometimes the oil can sting or itch a bit, especially when you first start using and if you are deficient. Just start with 1 dropper’s worth or two, and work your way up to 2-3 droppers twice a day (morning and night).
You can gauge if you're taking too much if your stools become loose. Just reduce the amount you take if that happens.
If you find it too sticky, you can also apply it before you shower. Magnesium takes about 30 minutes to absorb so just wait to shower until it's assimilated into your body.

When a Walk and a Cup of Tea Won’t Do
Thanks to a physician who is willing to work with me and the advice of some friends regarding what to discuss with her, I’ve found a medication regimen which, at least thus far, has been working really well for me. In my particular case, I take Adderall for ADD plus Welbutrin for the depression and anxiety that generally come with autism. These last few weeks have been wonderful for me, in that all my obligations and chores, instead of being a crushing weight, simply are things to do, and while I still need a certain amount of willpower to knock everything out, it’s much easier for me to remember what I have to do or want to do, and to be motivated to knock them out.
My experience with medication, like those with many physical and mental conditions, has been a little bumpy. Because of our diverse body chemistries, it’s hard to say what sort of combination will work, and so medication often is a matter of trial and error. I’ve taken Adderall, Xanax, Lexipro, and now Welbutrin and Adderall, with testosterone shots about once a fortnight, plus various remedies one can buy at GNC or at a health-food store – even today, there are jars of magnesium capsules and a few other supplements in my cupboard.
In my experience, the most difficult part of taking medication is coming to terms with the fact that it would help. Just as I hoped talk therapy would make me normal one day – this was before my diagnosis, of course – I hoped I’d be able to handle everything with talk therapy alone, plus some meditation or yoga and some herbal remedies.
Looking back, I suppose I bought into some of the stigma that still exists, regarding mental illness or chronic mental conditions. The prevailing religious school of thought in this country states that one who believes strongly enough can do anything, and if a person believes that, it logically follows that if a person cannot do whatever they set out to do, they just don’t believe strongly enough. We also have a love-hate relationship with “drugs”, and there’s a stereotype going around – I’m not saying it’s true; I’m just saying the stereotype exists – that instead of people learning to control themselves or their children, they’re having doctors dispense drugs like candy to them or to the kids. Of course, there’s also the belief that drug companies are trying to make money by focusing on lifelong treatments instead of cures.
I do understand why people have those attitudes, even if I disagree with them. There are naturally motivated people who indeed can do whatever they decide to do, and it’s very easy for people to take that ability for granted, just as people take their natural social savvy for granted. Since we certainly hear more about people receiving prescriptions, and since authority in some places isn’t as strong as it used to be, it’s easy to believe that people are depending more on drugs instead of themselves. Again, I’m not saying it’s true, just that it’s easy for people to come to that conclusion. As for the stance against drug companies, that simply comes from the fact that the people who run them aren’t angels, and the way some drug prices are rather high, though I note that some of the reasons for the prices have to do regulations and similar causes.
There also is, of course, more of a “back-to-nature” attitude, an attitude that technological advances have harmed us by making us more artificial, and that all we really need is to re-connect with the Earth, or something similar. I suppose it’s a natural result of our tendency not to recognize a danger if we’re too separated from it. In any event, I’ve had people give me advice that amounts to, “Just drink some herbal tea and an occasional walk in the forest, and you’ll be fine. You don’t really need those drugs; those doctors are just making junkies out of you.”
My general answer is that I wish all of that were true. I wouldn’t mind living in a world in which, as a relative once said to me, I could decide tomorrow, to be a go-getter, and I’d be one. I’d love to be able to drink some herbal tea and to take a walk in Fontenelle Forest or Neale Woods, and to feel right as rain. I’d love to think that without paying the insurance company, the pharmacy, and the doctor, I could just be like all those who are naturally motivated and energetic, and just become the way I am by going for a hike with a Thermos full of chamomile tea.
Sad to say, reality gets in the way. Just as our bodies have different levels of energy, so do our minds. There are those whose bodies can move around effortlessly, without the aid of so much as a cup of coffee, and there are those, like me, whose bodies are a little more inert. In the same way, there are those whose minds are apparently endless generators of motivation and positivity, and there are those whose minds need a bit more of a boost.
There are, however, two things I’ll say in defense of those who don’t favor medication. One is, that it probably is a good idea, if possible, to try controlling oneself without it first. I went through years of using only talk therapy and various motivational materials to handle my condition, and started taking meds only after my efforts failed. Among other things, this got me in the habit of continuing to use those strategies while on medication, which is my second defense. We cannot sit there and depend on the drug to do all the work, but we have to work on ourselves – it’s like the way, if an athlete takes steroids, they don’t grow muscle by just sitting there, but they have to head to the gym and bust their tails there in order to grow strong.
I realize, of course, that there are other reasons why some folks don’t take medication, and because the different solutions to cost and availability of medications are so controversial, I’m remaining silent about them here – I already have discussed politics too much this week.  
In any event, I know many people who are able to live full lives, with minimal disruption, because a doctor was able and willing to work with them on finding the right medication for them, and because they were willing to understand that sometimes, nature isn’t enough, and when we bring in the scientists, even if their bosses aren’t angels, wonderful things can happen.

    Hypothyroidism is a frustrating disease.
You’ll know what I’m talking about.
There’s the symptoms…
It made my hair thin out. I gained weight – even when I was off my food. I got moody and occasionally depressed. Sometimes I was constipated.
I was able to sleep a solid 10 hours and still wake up exhausted. I found it difficult to focus at work and a struggle to really enjoy family and social life.
My low moods and anxious thoughts created one or two relationship difficulties too. People try to be understanding but… my condition wore them down.
Even more frustrating was that doctors simply didn’t believe there’s anything wrong with me.
After several discussions, my doctor looked at my thinning hair, accepted that my dry skin and aching limbs ‘wasn’t normal’…
…but then put my fatigue and anxiety down to me being preoccupied with my thinning hair and aching limbs!
He told me he couldn’t find anything wrong with me. He advised I eat better, exercise more and take up a hobby. 
When he did finally have my blood tested – hypothyroidism was diagnosed.
I was put on a lifetime course of drugs.
They had some positive effect but they mostly reduced symptoms a little – they never got rid of them.
So I was still tired an awful lot – but I could mostly keep my eyes open.
My hair and skin sill thinned and dried – but a little less.
And so on.
The meds became a problem.
I developed some dosage problems – which is common with hypothyroidism meds.
They’re sensitive drugs. A bit too much or too little can have dramatic effects on a person’s health.
Even taking pills from a new batch can lead to adverse reactions.
My doctor informed me that for many people thyroid problems fluctuate over the course of the year. Which, as I found out, means the dosage had to fluctuate too.
I’ve never been keen to take drugs for illnesses. They’re toxic, unnatural and, over time, can cause as many problems as they solve.
Yet here I was… stuck, basically.
I wasn’t getting better. The drugs’ downsides could hit me between the eyes at any time – but I didn’t know what else to do instead.
Anyway. That’s all done with now.
I no longer have the disease.
So I can look back on those days and smile. It’s all over for me. I’m fully well.
I do still recall it all though. And I feel for others who are ill now the way I was then.
 My recovery is complete. It happened pretty quickly – about 4 weeks, give or take a few days.
And that disease ain’t coming back either.
I’ll explain why.
Not everyone suffers hypothyroidism for life
About 18 months ago a lady called Jodi Knapp was in front of me in a long line at the supermarket. While we waited to be served we started talking.
Long story short, Jodi knew all about hypothyroidism. She was a natural health practitioner and some years previously had helped a close friend – who had it really bad – get over the disease.
Today, Jodi routinely treats hypothyroidism in hundreds of people. She gave me a link to some information about how she approaches the disease and we chatted some more while we waited.
What I eventually learned from Jodi about hypothyroidism was jaw-dropping.
Because I’m the kind of person who trusts doctors unquestioningly. If a doctor can’t beat whatever you’re suffering from then it can’t be beaten. Plain and simple. I realize that can sound dumb but that’s how I am.
When I was finally free of hypothyroidism I changed that view. I had to.
Because the essence of the problem is this: doctors tend to treat only the symptoms of hypothyroidism.
They fully understand that an under-active thyroid isn’t producing the hormones the body needs.
They of course know that these hormones – known as T3 and T4 – regulate our metabolism.
Which means they directly affect how fast your heart beats, how deeply you breathe, your body temperature, cholesterol levels – and whether you’ll gain weight or lose it.
And doctors understand the effects of an under-active thyroid: weight-gain, depression, poor skin and hair quality, disrupted menstrual cycles in women, aching joints, ongoing tiredness and so on.
And so they tackle the hormones problem – insufficient T3 and T4 – with artificial hormones and then, perhaps, tinker with the other effects – tiredness, low moods and so on.
But they leave underlying causes completely untouched.
They say, for example, that hypothyroidism is caused by ‘lack of iodine’. But they don’t explain why there’s a lack of iodine.
Some doctors recognize – correctly – that our immune system is running riot and causing our thyroid problem.
But then fail to ask why is the immune system running out of control? What’s the cause?
Doctors administer drugs for the symptoms – the part of the disease that we can all see – and leave the underlying causes untouched.
What Jodi told me was very, very powerful. She said the primary cause of hypothyroidism was inflammation in the body. Scientists are already closely studying inflammation because it is implicated in many, many diseases.
So if we tackle the inflammation we’ve put paid to the hypothyroidism.
So here’s how we actually end up with hypothyroidism:
If we trace the story backwards we find that our thyroid is being attacked by our immune system.
It’s what doctors call ‘an autoimmune disease’.
Why is our immune system attacking our thyroid?
This is well understood. It works like this:
One of our immune system’s vital jobs is to attack excess toxins in your body.
Toxins – ‘poisons’, basically –  in the body are natural and normal. A healthy body can handle them.
Toxins come from both the food we eat and from the wider environment – chemicals from household cleaners, for example. Or soaps and deodorants.
But we must get rid of them from our bodies – they are dangerous if left unchecked. Various body systems do this – and our immune systems are one of those systems.
Our immune system releases inflammatory cells to do the job of neutralizing and removing toxins. These inflammatory cells give rise to inflammation.
Inflammation is simply blood, killer cells, liquids and so on that rush to an area of the body to handle a wound or tackle bad bacteria.
You’ll experience inflammation in the redness and swelling of an insect bite, or a bad scratch or a stubbed toe.
Heat, redness, swelling – that’s your immune system working to fix a wound and fight any possible infections.
And when the job is done the system relaxes, recuperates and is ready for the next fight
But there’s a big, big problem here
It’s known that our modern lives bring into our bodies amounts of toxic material that we often just can’t deal with.
24 hours a day modern man and woman is exposed to environmental and food toxins that many of us don’t even realize are there.
Which means the immune system’s work is never-ending. There’s little let-up in the excess toxins it’s forced to deal with. 
And on constant high-alert and always being called into action… it becomes stressed and exhausted.
Which leads to it making some serious mistakes
Most notably it sends inflammatory cells everywhere – and they start to attack healthy body tissue. 
And whatever tissue they attack leads to a specific disease.
This is called an immune system disorder.
In fact, scientists have verified over a hundred immune system disorders. They take different forms, attacking different parts of the body.
In rheumatoid arthritis, the immune system is attacking your joints and connective tissues.
In diabetes, it is attacking your pancreas.
In celiac disease it’s attacking your gut lining.
In Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, the victims are your thyroid cells.
This isn’t theory, it’s verified science
But what’s frustrating is that we know what causes that ongoing inflammation.
These days there are too many toxins in the average person’s blood and our immune systems are struggling to cope.
Our immune system malfunctions, attacks our thyroid and stops it producing vital hormones.
And so we experience all the typical symptoms of hypothyroidism. 
Don’t take this personally
By the way, the revelation that your body is carrying excess toxins shouldn’t be taken personally.
It’s not your fault at all.
Ongoing, chronic inflammation – caused by excess toxins in the body – is widespread. You’re not alone – it affects millions of Americans.
We do little about it because we don’t really know how to.
We’re exposed to so many toxins – we hardly know about a single one of them. And those that get into our bodies are working our immune systems into exhaustion.
Many of those toxins are unknown to us ordinary folk. But they’re avoidable. Easily avoidable. But only when you know what they are and where they are.

Everything on her list is available at my local supermarket.
A lot of it I already had in my kitchen. I simply needed to be using more of the good stuff and a little less of the bad stuff. But it’s all common items that can be found in any food store.
And why would it be any other way?
After all: ordinary stuff caused this disease. And ordinary stuff will get rid of it.
No need for anything exotic or complicated.
An easy solution made even easier
Jodi’s Hypothyroidism Solution lists everything I needed to know. She lists what needs to be reduced or replaced – and she showed me what to replace it with.
And then she showed me how to put this information into action.
Jodi’ provided a 4-week plan for me to follow that eased me into the new way of doing things.

5 or 6 days into the 4-week plan I started to feel the effects. I felt a lot lighter and I seemed to move in a more relaxed way. It’s hard to describe. It was very nice though.
I slept a heck of a lot better. And I didn’t really have a sleep problem in the first place so that was quite a revelation.
At about the 10 day mark my mood lifted noticeably. I mean, I woke up and felt very different – in a good way.
It might have been at the point that things just ran away with themselves. I suddenly had more energy, more enthusiasm for life….

FOUR THINGS THAT STEAL THE JOY FROM OUR LIFE
We talked Wednesday Night about what "Meaning to Life" was all about. We determined that Life assumes meaning when we have Confidence in God's Forgiveness Plus the ability to forgive ourself. Then we recognize God's Plan for our Life and walk in it.
Sadly, many people have lost this abundant Life and now live lives of quite desperation. We're here to help change that today.
The first thing we must do is RECOGNIZE THE PROBLEM. No matter how much water you pump you will never fill a pail if the bottom is rusted out!
So let's look at the FOUR THINGS THAT STEAL THE JOY FROM OUR LIFE:
1> Rigors of Life- Debt, Disease, Death, Disasters. All these combine to rain on our parade on a regular basis. It's hard to keep a joyful attitude when Life keeps dropping bricks on your head!
2> Rut of Routine- We NEED Routine; but it becomes so easy for routine to trap us into a Rut. Once we're in the rut, it's easier to stay in the rut that to make the effort needed to break out (The rut does most of the driving for us now!). Then the Rut becomes a grave without ends as we want to break free from the jail we've become captured in but find we don't have the energy or ability. We give up Hope of change and allow the rut to control our destiny and our destination.
3> Ruin of Sin- Sin is Appealing. It's Fun to do (The consequences are frightful but the actions are Fun). We must teach people to do right but they just naturally do wrong-- I don't have to preach about waiting your turn to attend Church; I have to tell you how sorry you are that you always look for excuses to miss Church!!
Sin steals our time, our heart, and our conscience (People can justify ANYTHING). Then, when it traps us, it pounds on us and tells us how sorry we are and our hopeless it is for us to think we can possible change.
All of these "joy stealers" are easily recognized. The easy thing for me to do now would be to tell you to "straighten up and do better. Then come to the Altar and tell God you're sorry". The sad truth, however, is that most of the people who came to the altar and just prayed a prayer would be back in their ruts before Wednesday night! When they walked out the door of the Church, Life would slap them beside the head, Their routine would require them to do certain things that would ease them right back into the rut, and the ballgame would still seem more entertaining than the Bible.
That's because we have left out the most common "Joy Stealer" among people who attend Church- The Rituals of Religion. The very thing that is supposed to Give us life ends up Stealing it!
Sermons beat us in the head instead of building us up in the Lord. We volunteer for a task and find that other Christians are apathetic at best and sometimes down right hard to live with. It becomes more fun to recognize who comes in late than to really read the words of the song we're singing. Church really becomes boring to us. We only come because of duty, guilt, or social obligation.
How did the Church become a Boulder of Burden instead of a Rock of Rest and Protection? What causes the Solution to become the problem.
The answer is relatively simple. The Bible says the Meaning of Life is found in a proper relationship with Christ. We have changed that to believe that the meaning to life can be found in Church Attendance. We have succumbed to the greatest temptation of religion.
The greatest temptation of religion is to BECOME WORSHIP CENTERED INSTEAD OF SERVICE CENTERED. Service without power found through worship is inadequate, but worship which does not express itself in service is worthless- Or as James said it, "Faith without works is dead".
Madame Chiang Kai-shek said, "Confucianism worshiped ancestors, but never built an old folks' home". I fear today she would say that Christians worship God but never serve Him.
Once a soap manufacturer was arguing with a minister about the value of religion. The Soap manufacturer said that religion had been here a long time and sin still existed. At that time they passed a boy playing in the mud. The Minister said that soap didn't work because the boy was still dirty. The manufacturer said, "But it would if it was applied". "So would religion", said the Minister.
It's simply amazing but Jesus never told about casting anyone into outer darkness because of a particular sin. It was always a failure in service. The rich man was sent to Hell because he ignored Lazarus; not for any specified wrong. The Pharisees did not do anything "wrong" but they failed to help people. The man who failed to use his talent did not do anything "wrong". He was cast into outer darkness because he did not use what God had given him. The five virgins who were excluded from the wedding had not become unclean; they had simply let their lights go out.
Christians seem to think we are righteous because of the bad that we don't do. Jesus continually emphasized the good that we should do!
So there you have it. If we are going to return meaning to life we must return to God's Purpose for our life. A person who loses purpose; loses life. That's why you will never enjoy life until you begin to live for something. The unhappiest people in the world are the people who live only for themselves. Life without meaning is the thought that if you died tonight it would not be a loss to anyone.
This Purpose in life is not found in feverish activity or financial abilities. It is found in service commissioned by God. It is taking the talents God has given you and using them to benefit others.
What has happened is that we have hid our talents for so long until they've lost their usefulness. There are fish in Mammoth cave that are blind. They have eyes but they have lived so long in darkness without using them until they are now blind. Put your arm in a sling for a week- then try to use it; it will be almost useless. Many people who stay in hospitals for extended times have to learn how to walk all over again.
Service in not based on our Ability to serve- Of the 30 miracles recorded in the Gospels, only one is recorded in all four of the Gospels. That one is the feeding of the 5000. The boy had only Two fish and five loaves; but he committed them to God! DESIRE TO SERVE God is all that's needed. God will provide the power and opportunity.

10 Ways to Beat Insomnia and Get Better Sleep
Two-and-a-half years ago, I experienced a terrible case of insomnia. I took the sleeping drug Lunesta (eszopiclone), which afforded me a few wonderful nights’ sleep until I realized it substantially increased my anxiety during the day. Within a week on the drug, I became addicted, experiencing more and more withdrawal (anxiety) symptoms. Other sleep aids had the same effect — even over-the counter medications like Benadryl (diphenhydramine). So I was forced to figure out how to get my sleep back on track naturally.
I asked anyone I knew who had ever suffered from sleep problems for tips on catching some quality ZZZs, and spent lots of time researching ways to get some shut-eye without taking drugs. Although it felt like I was the only one awake at night, I certainly wasn’t alone. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than one-quarter of the U.S. population occasionally does not get enough sleep, while nearly 10 percent experience chronic insomnia. Sleep problems are associated with a number of chronic illnesses and, according to the CDC, are a real threat to our nation’s health.
For the last month I’ve been battling the beast of insomnia again — it’s common when you taper off of any medication — so I’m back to compiling techniques I’ve learned from other folks who lie awake at night.
Here are some natural remedies that have allowed them to get a better night’s sleep.
1. Herbal Teas
Many of my friends who suffer from sleep problems have benefitted from drinking different kinds of herbal teas an hour or two before they go to bed at night. You can make your own from dried herbs: Put a teaspoon of your mix into a tea ball or tea bag and add to hot water, or try some tea bags from a trusted boxed brand. You want to include or look for ingredients such as lavender, valerian, chamomile, passionflower, lemon balm, ashwagandha, holy basil, rosemary leaf, and dill seed. Some popular tea brands include Sleepytime, Yogi Tea (I like their Honey Lavender Stress Relief tea and Calming tea) and Traditional Medicinals (especially their organic Nighty Night tea and Cup of Calm tea).
2. Essential Oils
For nearly 6,000 years, essential oils have been used for therapeutic purposes — sleep issues included. Several people in my online depression community use lavender oil to help them relax before bed and to help them sleep. They either apply a few drops to their temples before going to bed at night or spray a lavender mist on their pillow. I’ve used lavender oil myself for about a year now, and I do think it’s helpful. Other calming essential oils include valerian, vetiver, roman chamomile, and marjoram.
3. Meditation and Relaxation Tapes
A few years ago when my daughter couldn’t sleep, we would listen to calming meditations by Lori Lite designed for children. They were very effective in helping her to relax her body and mind enough to drift off to sleep. There are all kinds of sleep meditations and apps on the market today. Mashable published a good list awhile back. Personally, I like the meditations by Jon Kabat-Zinn, PhD, founding director of the University of Massachusetts Medical School’s Center for Mindfulness in Medicine, Health Care, and Society in Worcester, as well as its stress reduction program.
Dr. Zinn’s voice soothes me more than any other meditation guide. A friend of mine swears by the meditations found on the free app CALM. Of course, you don’t need a guide to meditate. Sometimes just paying attention to your breath on your own — concentrating on your belly as it rises with each inhale and lowers with each exhale — or concentrating on a bodily sensation is a great way of calming yourself down.
4. Soothing Music and White Noise
Many of the apps listed above come with soothing music and white noise. Some nights, I’m not up for listening to instructions on how to relax each of my muscles or reminders to pay attention to my breath. I simply visualize myself lying by the ocean, listening to the waves on the shore, or I concentrate on my breath as I listen to nature sounds. So I have a few apps and soundtracks of just ocean waves and rain and water streams that are helpful for unwinding. Other people I know like to listen to soothing music, instrumental melodies, or simple white noise.
5. Cooler Temperatures
According to California-based clinical psychologist Arlene K. Unger, PhD, becoming overly heated is a common cause of sleeplessness. As one of the many helpful hints in her book Sleep: 50 Mindfulness and Relaxation Exercises for a Restful Night’s Sleep, she advises wearing lighter pajamas, keeping the window slightly open, and possibly ditching the heavy covers. I know people who sleep much better with a fan. The breeze and white noise create a conducive sleeping environment.
6. Melatonin and Other Natural Supplements
There are several natural supplements that can help relax the nervous system and assist sleep. The most common are melatonin, which regulates the sleep-wake cycle, and the amino acid l-theanine that’s typically found in teas. Valerian, GABA, kava, and 5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) are others. I’ve found the combination of magnesium and calcium to be effective at times. Some natural sleep aids that combine various supplements include Neuroscience’s Kavinace Ultra PM, Genestra’s Calm-gen, and Nature Made’s Sleep supplement.
7. Epsom Salts Baths
Taking an Epsom salts bath in the evening has been one of the more effective parts of my sleep hygiene routine. Epsom salts are a mineral compound containing magnesium, sulfur, and oxygen. When used in a warm bath, they allow magnesium to be easily absorbed into the skin, which promotes a feeling of calm and relaxation.
According to a 2012 study in the journal Neuropharmacology, magnesium deficiencies induce anxiety, which is why the mineral is known as the original chill pill. I simply add two cups of the lavender-scented Epsom salts with added potassium and zinc to my bathwater. I then turn off the bathroom lights and use a lavender candle.
8. Prayer Beads and Mantras
You need not be a devout Catholic to use prayer beads: They’re employed in all of the world’s religions as part of meditative practices. The process of repeating a prayer or mantra over and over again while thumbing the beads can be very relaxing and soothing. Personally, I’ve slept with a rosary since I first experienced insomnia two years ago. The prayer beads have become my safety item, much like a child’s blankie, and give me comfort in the middle of the night when I wake.
9. Yoga
Any kind of yoga primes the parasympathetic system and promotes relaxation, taming the stress responses that cause insomnia. I’ve found hot yoga to be especially beneficial for sleep because, in addition to doing the healing postures, sweating releases stored toxins (so it’s very cleansing). Certain postures like these 19 listed in Yoga Journal are especially helpful for sleep. Doing them in the evening, or even when you wake at night, can soothe your central nervous system. Practicing Savasana (Corpse Pose) in particular before sleeping can promote deep rest, according to yoga instructors I know. There are also some apps you can download, like Yoga for Insomnia, that will help guide you through the postures.
10. Audiotapes and Free Lectures
Reading in periods of sleeplessness helps many folks I know doze off into slumber. But as a highly sensitive person, the light wakes me up. According to some Harvard research, all light-emitting e-books and screens negatively affect our sleep — even the Kindle. I therefore prefer to listen to audiotapes. Lately, I’ve been listening to the book Wherever You Go, There You Are by Kabat-Zinn. It’s a collection of small chapters about mindfulness that is effective at calming me down. Since audio books can be expensive, you might consider downloading university lectures, which are free content, from iTunes U — the section of Apple’s iTunes music store devoted to higher education.

Not everyone suffers hypothyroidism for life

    Hypothyroidism is a frustrating disease.
You’ll know what I’m talking about.
There’s the symptoms…
It made my hair thin out. I gained weight – even when I was off my food. I got moody and occasionally depressed. Sometimes I was constipated.
