#GeorgianJanuary and the first theme is beginnings. This was my first ever costume I made in 2015 (an apparently my cell phone was from 2005, oof that picture quality) I didnt know much about sewing, or fit... or fabric....or even historical clothing lol. The petticoat was made out of a thick muslin and though the shape was nice it was not suitable for outterwear and i didnt roll the hem in so it didnt last. The jacket however is great and I love it but the fit in the chest is not so great. Its sized for someone with a bigger chest than I have  and I didnt know at the time how to address sizing. Maybe Ill fix it someday because it is really cute and made of red linen with a reversible stomacher (one side plain one side floral) 

Although it isnt my favorite thing I learned so much and it sparked my costuming journy and ive made so many friends along the way

Day 2 of #georgianjanuary. Category is....BLUE! Whilst this painting doesn't show a completely blue dress, the deep blue ribbons and patterns set off against the creamy white almost makes the figure blend in with the beauty of the sky behind her. The model in question (painted beautifully here by Thomas Gainsborough) is an Venetian dancer called Giovanna Baccelli (1753-1801). She was principal ballerina at the King's Theatre in Haymarket, London. Her popularity and skill meant she often brushed shoulders with the great and the good of English high society and soon, she became the mistress and long-time partner of the Duke of Dorset. Dorset actually had this painting of her commissioned, which makes the essence of natural beauty that permeates Giovanna's entire look here even more profound. He also commissioned Joshua Reynolds to make a sculpture of Giovanna, one that shows her nude and reclining on a divan, and which can still be found at Dorset's family seat of Knole. When Dorset was made Ambassador to France, he took 'Gio mio' (his nickname for her) to Paris with him and when Giovanna was invited to dance at the Parisian opera, Dorset let her wear his Order of the Garter ribbon in her hair for good luck. All in all, a sweet story to accompany my blue-based picture for today 💙 P.S I will be sharing some other of my fave 18th century Blue Looks in my Story so have a gander!!!!
