I’ve been internally comparing Yuan to Old Fashion Cupcake’s Togawa, which isn’t quite fair, because a shade of Togawa is his self-shame at what he revealed to Nozue when he admitted his feelings in OFC episode 5. But at least Yuan and Togawa share this strong and bold sense of sassiness within and vis à vis their attraction and list for the older men they court.

Today, in Unknown, episode 9, I got a sense of Nozue in Qian. I know that embrace at the end of the episode may be read in part as a shipping embrace, but what I also realized about that hug was that:

As Nozue had to contemplate “crossing a line,” as it were, to DECIDE on embracing his queer revelation, what is so beautiful about watching Qian’s process of change is that we get to watch his DECISION-MAKING about crossing A FIRST line from big brother/father to lover, and we’re seeing ALL THE BURDENS and senses of responsibility he has to his YOUNGER BROTHER/CHILD there. There’s a lot more there than a queer revelation, so much more — there’s a decision that he has also has to walk away (because Yuan is now self-sufficient) from brotherly/parental RESPONSIBILITY. He needs to process this, and San Peng is there to remind Qian of this.

These are two BIG LINES! (Togawa even talks to Nozue, at the end of OFC, about being identified as a social minority — but we’re not even there yet in Unknown, and that separately is a huge behavioral decision and deal for the outcome of any queer revelation we see in dramas, that someone who previously identified as straight and who will come out as queer will have to contemplate a minority social status. The second season of She Loves to Cook, and She Loves to Eat covered this beautifully.)

We’re being blessed or cursed with Unknown spoilers of Qian and Yuan smoochin’, but this episode 9 embrace meant a lot more to me than a prelude to smooching. I think this show in part is affecting me so much as a mom, because Qian has GOT to accept Yuan as a self-sufficient and emotionally responsible adult before making an emotional transition to becoming a lover.

Not the lover part as much, but the acceptance that a kid has grown up: that is something that parents and older siblings really struggle with, because we want to box our youngsters into a segment of our memories when they were younger, dependent, unconditionally loving, and we as caretakers could BE depended on in an expected and reliable way. Admittedly, so many of us parents even want and explore the unbalanced power dynamic there.

Yuan’s fuckin’ up that power dynamic with his damn sassiness, it is so amazing to see, but I also empathize with Qian so much, because the adult growth transitions that HE has to make as a former caretaker are just really emotionally huge. And the show is allowing him his pace of growth that’s right for his character, and it’s really just getting me in the gut for how emotionally sound and empathic this journey is going.

Sadly, I have so little time these days to keep up with either new shows or go back and visit old favorites. But when I can sneak in a little comfort watch, I tend to go to:

History 3: Trapped

This was the one that got me hooked, and started me on the BL obsession path, which led to me watching so many amazing shows and also joining Tumblr, so I will always have some deep love for it. I like revisiting those initial "ooooooh" feelings, of what it felt like to discover a whole new world for myself. (Also where is our special episode with Tang Yi getting out of prison, where is it Taiwan?!?!)

Love in the Air

There's something about the Phayu/Rain dynamic that really speaks to me. Probably says a few things about my own proclivities, but regardless, there's something comforting in seeing two people so quickly realize "this is that rare precious person who is going to be perfect for me".

Old Fashion Cupcake

As a BL watcher above the age of 40, it can be a little tiring to see so much focus on queer youth. I still enjoy a lot of it, but I don't necessarily always relate to it. Our society loves to pretend life ends at 30, but the reality is that figuring out one's identity is a lifelong journey. And I love how OFC taps into that. It's also just so relatable with regards to how life can become very mundane at times, and it helps to have someone encouraging you to try new things. Also Togawa is fucking hot.

Incoherent Old Fashion Cupcake ramblings

I watched Old Fashion Cupcake last night and I've been in a delicious drama brainrot ever since.

This show is brilliant in every way, from acting to camera work to music to incorporating food into the character interactions to body language (y'all know what I'm talking about *smirks*)

As writing, narrative and character arc fiends, @lurkingshan and I ramble a lot about how shows wrap up all of its plotlines, how satisfying it is, and more importantly, how seamless it feels.

Old Fashion Cupcake has an office romance right at its core. Nozue and Togawa are co-workers, and Togawa is Nozue's subordinate. Which means as soon as they get together, Togawa working under Nozue will be a HR violation. One of them must be reassigned so there is no overlap in their reporting structure.

Now, this is in NO WAY a central conflict that the characters have to work through. But for me, as a viewer, it is a tiny, albeit noticeable problem that will arise wayyyyyy later in the narrative, and it would be oh-so-satisfying to have that plot thread resolved and tied up into a pretty bow within the show's runtime, without it taking focus away from the other, more important themes going on in the show.

And how do the writers do it? Nozue accepts a promotion as the head of another, newly-created department that will also relocate him to a different building. But his decision to move on to a different role is not motivated by the workplace rules, AT ALL. It is beautifully tied into how Nozue *wants* new experiences in his life now, thanks to Togawa.

The HR violation is a tertiary, almost nit-picky problem when compared to the major themes and character arc developments in the show. But it was not ignored and it was resolved exactly how it should be: as a happy coincidence that came with the closure of the main character's arc. So beautifully seamless that I want to cry.

I was rambling about this show to @waitmyturtles and she pointed out that the show's strong writing was certainly helped by the brilliant manga it was adapted from, created by Sagan Sagan. And now I'm very intrigued and might check out the manga (but in the far-off future, I am drowning in my drama watchlist atm lol). Also -- big shoutout to the screenwriter Miyamoto Takeshi. I know Japan is a pro in adapting from print/digital media to TV/movies, but to do it with such a grace? Ooooooof, all the flowers.

I highly doubt that my brainrot for this show ends here and I bet I will go on multiple OFC ramble sprees in the future. Until then, enjoy the resident OFC hamster who has no business being this fucking adorable and sexy.

What to say? Maybe it's the ADHD or the fact that I just came from two long BLCDs, but I'm always in a bad headspace when I listen to OFC. 😅 The second volume just went the second route of sequels: misunderstandings/insecurities featuring third-party appearances. I really get where Nozue-san's coming from and I'm not saying that his insecurities are invalid or whatever—it's just that he's the one who wanted to make their relationship low-key, but he was doing the worst job at it. 🙄And like what I've said in my review for volume 1, they don't have a big age gap, so this age gag with Nozue-san just annoys me. It doesn't help that they mention it every five pages or so. The more Sagan Sagan does it, the more Nozue-san's age sounds more like an excuse than a gag.

Yoneda Kou's spoiled me to the point that I can't accept anything less, it seems. 🤷Don't blame me for comparing, they also have a Togawa over there.

Anyway, that's enough of the plot.

Chil-chil 2023 was a lie. There is no way Okitsu placed fourth while Youhei placed 13th. If anything, they should be reversed—and that's coming from me, one of the biggest Okitsu whores on this site. But being an Okitsu simp also means I know how that man sounds like, and that man sounds awkward af in this tone. His Nozue-san is too slow and too light for him. Nozue-san does have moments where he'll explode in panic or anger, but considering how light and slow Okitsu's portrayal of him is, you would expect his explosions to be more on the lighter side, right? WRONG. HE GOES FULL JONATHAN JOESTAR TO DO IT LMAO

SUNLIGHT YELLOW OVERDRIVE!!!

I failed to mention in my first review that Nozue-san looks like Italy from Hetalia which is why I wanted NamiD for him... if he wasn't so problematic. Anyway, thankfully, we have a live-action. I very much prefer Kouhei Takeda over Okitsu as Nozue-san. HAHAHAHAHAHA

Youhei was the true MVP of this BLCD. I don't get how he placed so low. He was very stable, and his sex appeal shined throughout the CD. It kind of reminds me of Maeno's tbh. Chil-chil 2022 might've robbed him, but this man has earned his seat at the "tops you should look out for" table in my view. Congratulations!

The BLCD was pretty accurate to the manga. Read-alongs are indeed possible with it, but I will say that I had an issue with SuBLime's localization. For one thing, the second volume wasn't consistent with the first. Togawa calls Nozue-san "Mr. Nozue" in the first volume while he calls him "Nozue" in the second.😑I don't want to go on a long rant about honorifics, but when it comes to stories where age is an important factor, I am firm in my belief that the Japanese or a close English equivalent should be used. It's a Japanese story set in Japan; it's not your culture to localize. There, I said it.

Also,

Yes, we stan being redundant even when the original wasn't. 😌 I wouldn't be nit-picking if y'all just licensed Koi ga, SuBLime.

Still, please try supporting the official transla localization if you can. I can't say that the production was great because of Okitsu, but this actually placed fifth in the 2022 awards, so do with that info what you wish. If y'all want more office bl, then I shamelessly recommend Yoneda Kou's Doushitemo Furetakunai (Ishikawa Hideo x Nojima Kenji) and Soredemo, Yasashii Koi o Suru (Morikawa Toshiyuki x Nojima Hirofumi).
