The musician Ryuichi Sakamoto, who has died aged 71 of cancer, spent his life as a restless traveller, both personally and musically. “I was born in Japan but I don’t think I’m Japanese,” he said in 1988, two years before he moved to New York. “To be a stranger – I like that attitude. I don’t like nationalities and borders.”
A founder member of Tokyo’s pioneering computer-pop trio Yellow Magic Orchestra, whose work between 1978 and 1984 has proved a lasting influence on hip-hop and electronica, Sakamoto was able to combine his skills as an academically trained musician with an aptitude for electronic music and an ear for countless musical styles. He sustained a lengthy partnership with the British musician David Sylvian after first working with his band Japan on the track Taking Islands in Africa from the album Gentlemen Take Polaroids (1980), following which the duo collaborated on the double A-side Bamboo Houses/Bamboo Music (1982).
In 1983, Sakamoto achieved a peak of commercial visibility by not only writing the soundtrack for Nagisa Oshima’s film Merry Christmas, Mr Lawrence, but also co-starring in it (as Captain Yonoi) with David Bowie. The soundtrack, which won him a Bafta for best film music, contained the Sakamoto/Sylvian composition Forbidden Colours, a vocal version of the film’s main theme, which was a Top 20 hit in Britain.
Soundtrack work became one of the main planks of Sakamoto’s career. He won an Academy Award (along with his fellow composers David Byrne and Cong Su) for his soundtrack to Bernardo Bertolucci’s The Last Emperor (1987), in which he also had an acting role, and worked with the director again on The Sheltering Sky (1990) and Little Buddha (1993).
Sakamoto scored the 1990 film version of The Handmaid’s Tale, Pedro Almodóvar’s Tacones Lejanos (High Heels, 1991), and Brian De Palma’s Snake Eyes (1998) and Femme Fatale (2002). Oliver Stone hired him for the soundtrack to his TV series Wild Palms (1993). Alejandro González Iñárritu used some existing Sakamoto recordings in his 2006 film Babel, then recruited him to write the score for his multiple Oscar-winner The Revenant (2015). For the opening of the 1992 Barcelona Olympics he provided El Mar Mediterrani.
Sakamoto released solo albums regularly between 1978 and 2017, many of them reaching the Top 30 in Japan but not registering on charts elsewhere, as well as six live albums and a string of compilations. However, Sakamoto’s subtle, exploratory music earned him a charismatic reputation that drew international guest stars to his projects.
On B-2 Unit (1980), he collaborated closely with Andy Partridge from XTC, and the electrofunk track Riot in Lagos proved inspirational for the likes of Mantronix and Afrikaa Bambaataa. Thomas Dolby featured on the pulsating Field Work from Illustrated Musical Encyclopedia (1986), the track accompanied by an ingeniously conceived video, while for Neo Geo (1987) Sakamoto enlisted Iggy Pop, Bill Laswell, Bootsy Collins and Sly Dunbar.
Brian Wilson and Robbie Robertson appeared on Beauty (1989), an album that spanned rock, technopop, flamenco and classical Japanese music. Heartbeat (1991), on which Sakamoto tried rap, funk and jazz, and lyrics in French, Japanese and Russian, numbered Youssou N’Dour, Arto Lindsay, Bill Frisell, Sylvian and John Cage among its contributors. In 1993, Sakamoto co-produced Aztec Camera’s album Dreamland.
Born in Tokyo, Ryuichi was the only child of Keiko (nee Shimomura), a hat designer, and Kazuki Sakomoto, a literary editor. While attending the same progressive primary school that once taught Yoko Ono, he was already writing music for the piano with their encouragement.
The American presence in postwar Japan introduced new western influences to the country, and Sakamoto was enraptured by the Beatles and the Rolling Stones. He attended Tokyo’s University of the Arts to study music composition, and felt a strong affinity for the compositions of Claude Debussy, in which he discerned an Asian influence. However, in addition he soaked up the work of contemporary composers such as Cage, Pierre Boulez, Györgi Ligeti and Stockhausen, as well as jazz musicians including John Coltrane and Ornette Coleman.
His early compositions were in an avant-garde vein, while he also performed with free jazz bands and played keyboards with the folk singer Masato Tomobe. He graduated with BA and MA degrees, having studied classical and assorted world and ethnic music, and taken his first steps in electronic music by working with Moog and ARP synthesizers.
He formed Yellow Magic Orchestra in 1978 with Haruomi “Harry” Hosono and Yukihiro Takahashi, whom he had met when they worked together as session musicians. Combining electropop with stylish graphics and costume design, the trio brought wit and warmth to the use of electronics, which contrasted with the studied alienation of European counterparts such as Kraftwerk or Gary Numan.
YMO released eight studio albums during their original lifespan, all of them climbing high in the Japanese charts, and three of them reaching No 1. The group inspired Beatlemania-like hysteria in their homeland. “We were very big, that’s why I hated it,” Sakamoto said. “We were always followed by paparazzi.”
YMO’s albums made little chart impact outside Japan, but their influence was nonetheless widely felt, not least in their innovative use of electronic sequencers, drum machines and sampling. Firecracker, from their 1978 debut album, was itself sampled in Afrika Bambaataa’s Death Mix. In 1980 they had a Top 20 hit in the UK with Computer Game (Theme from the Invaders), which chimed with the craze for the Space Invaders game. Behind the Mask, first conceived for a Seiko wristwatch commercial and then included on their album Solid State Survivor (1979), became a Top 20 UK hit for Eric Clapton; a version by Michael Jackson appeared on the posthumous album Michael (2010).
YMO paused their activities in 1984, though the trio continued to collaborate on each other’s solo work, and they reformed to make the album Technodon (1993). They subsequently reunited several times for recording and live performances, their last shows being for the No Nukes 2012 festival in Chiba, Japan, and the 2012 World Happiness festival in Tokyo.
In his teens in the late 1960s, Sakamoto had been a hippy with leftwing political beliefs – “not 100% Marxist, but kind of” – but he gradually became disillusioned with the failure of political movements to effect significant change. He decided that his music was not the place for social or political messages, observing that “I’ve changed from an avant-garde person to a pop person,” though he would subsequently support causes he felt strongly about.
He campaigned for changes to music copyright law, which he considered outmoded in the internet era, and founded Commmons, a collaborative platform to assist aspiring musicians. He formed a group of musicians called NML (No More Landmines), which featured Brian Eno, Sylvian, Kraftwerk and the other members of YMO, and in 2001 they released the single Zero Landmine.
In 2006 he launched the Stop Rokkasho movement by releasing the track Rokkasho (by a group of musicians dubbed Team 6), in protest at the building of Japan’s Rokkasho nuclear fuel reprocessing plant, and he campaigned to have the Hamaoka nuclear plant shut down to avoid a repeat of the 2011 tsunami disaster at the Fukushima facility. He and Byrne teamed up to record the single Psychedelic Afternoon to aid tsunami survivors.
His solo work continued to explore a huge variety of styles. In 1982 he had ventured into medieval and Renaissance music on the album The End of Asia, a collaboration with the Japanese early music group Danceries. Smoochy (1995) was a detour into easy listening, while Discord (1998) comprised an hour-long orchestral composition.
The album 1996 was a selection of Sakamoto pieces arranged for piano trio featuring the Brazilian cellist Jaques Morelenbaum, and Sakomoto reunited with him and his wife, Paula, a singer, for two albums in celebration of the bossa nova composer Antônio Carlos Jobim, Casa (2001) and A Day in New York (2003). In 1999, his multimedia opera, Life, was performed in Tokyo and Osaka.
Meanwhile, he struck up a fruitful collaboration with Alva Noto (a pseudonym of Carston Nicolai), which resulted in a string of electronica albums including Vrioon (2002) and Insen (2005), culminating in Glass (2018). With the Austrian guitarist and composer Christian Fennesz he recorded Sala Santa Cecilia (2005), Cendre (2007) and Flumina (2011).
In 2014 he was diagnosed with throat cancer, but by the following year was feeling “much much better”. His recovery from illness inspired the creation of his last solo album, Async, hailed as one of 2017’s finest forays into experimental electronica. Its making was documented by Stephen Nomura Schible in the film Coda (2018).
His final album, 12, was recorded during hospital stays in 2021 and 2022, and released in January. In December, he livestreamed a solo piano concert from Tokyo.
Sakamoto was first married to Natsuko, then to the musician Akiko Yano; both marriages ended in divorce. He is survived by his third wife and manager, Norika Sora, and their two children; and a daughter from his first marriage and another daughter from his second.

Thoughts on writing a puzzle mystery novel
I love puzzle mystery stories. Some examples: Agatha Christie's 'And Then There Were None' (the original SAW movie!), and a lot of Japanese mystery fiction such as The Tokyo Zodiac Murders by Soji Shimada, The Decagon House Murders by Yukito Ayatsuji. And a lot of visual novels like Dangan Ronpa, Zero Escape and Somnium Files.
(Let me know if you have any good recs.)
Anyway, my second novel is out for beta reading. It's like waiting for a friend to recover from their coma.
Rather than twiddling my thumbs, I'm working on my third book, and while the first two I'd call urban fantasy thrillers, the third is going to be a puzzle mystery. My approach to this after the cut:
My first two books were written by writing something, revising it, revising it again until I gradually moulded in the story into a shape like clay. I didn't plan or outline to start with. I had a vague idea of the themes, an understanding of the characters and a bunch of stuff about the world. It was like a textual Pinterest board of stuff.
My goal for book three is to dig into Lukie and Tamlyn's friendship. Once high school friends; now there's a twenty-year age gap between them since Lukie returned from the dead as an undead, soul-eating revenant. Tamlyn's been forced into the role of Lukie's guardian—she can only feed at his command. And Tamlyn's got lots of personal issues to deal with that haven't surfaced yet in the previous two books. His best friends were murdered in high school, and during his police career, he's repressed a lot of his emotions and personal stuff. So it's about applying pressure on the pair and see how their friendship endures and survives (or will it? Books can change dramatically through the writing process).
And this will be done through the backdrop of a complex mystery, with the pair staying at a haunted hotel. So the theme of friendship, ex-friendships and how much can a friendship bear will be featured heavily.
How do I plan to do this?
Everyone at the hotel is in a pair. Friends or married couples, of different ages and orientations. These relationships are pressured in someway when the plot event starts.
I will separate Lukie and Tamlyn. There's a time facture at the hotel. Tamlyn's stuck at one end, and Lukie's in the other. The two timelines are connected like in Looper—a change in the past end will influence the future end. Tamlyn's solving a murder mystery in the past, while Lukie is dealing with a ghost haunting the hotel in the future and the two time lines are connected.
How will I organise these not one, but two interconnected mysteries?
I realised early on (after writing 30k words) that I will need to, gasp, write an outline.
I'm currently working on Tamlyn's end of the story. He's stuck in the past, and stuck with five couples in the hotel, which they can't leave. There's a murderer on the loose. Each couple has a series of secrets.
This is where years of running mystery tabletop roleplaying games helps. Following on from the Alexandrian's articles on 'Revelation Lists', I've worked out a series of secrets for each couple. Then I made a list of steps for how the detective character will uncover the clue.
Overly dramatic example for a demonstration: (not actually from the book!)
Robert and Martha Smith, a mysterious married couple.
Dramatic Secrets: Robert and Martha pretend outwardly to be a happily married couple. The truth is more sinister. The couple have murdered the real Martha, and the 'new Martha' is Robert's girlfriend, and is using Martha's identity. ['new Martha' needs to use old Martha's identity papers as she's a foreign spy on the run, in trouble.]
The Detective notices at breakfast in the hotel that Martha doesn't know a simple fact about the jam Robert likes, which implies their relationship is new (and yet their paperwork/documentation says they've been married for twenty years).
Martha also is missing some cultural information that her persona should know. (I read somewhere about Russian infiltrators into the US in the 1960s may have had perfect English, but didn't know pop culture stuff like Mickey Mouse.) Perhaps another guest at the hotel is obsessed by a TV show that someone of Martha's age should know about, and yet she's a bit vague when pressed. The other guest is puzzled that she doesn't know these pop culture facts.
Some shocking event causes Martha to act like an intelligence professional (perhaps the sound of a gunshot makes her duck and roll?) rather than a scared businesswoman.
The Detective pulls on the circumstantial information about Martha together and realizes she's the foreign spy that another character spoke about.
The details will get fleshed out with further outlining/writing. Anyway, once I get a list of five revelation lists for each core clue in the book, then I order them like so
Chapter 3
Couple A, Revelation 1, Clue 1
Couple B, Revelation 2, Clue 2
Then I structure the chapters around that, adding pacing and characterisation as we go through. One problem I have with large-cast mystery novels is I often lose track of the characters if they're not distinct enough, so I'm trying to each character a name that sounds different and a quirk so the reader won't go "Quinn? Who's Quinn again?"
And that's my current approach for writing a mystery. I will let you know how it progresses.
Let me know if you have any good tips.

Chapter 35

Tumblr media
Finally, Saturday. A dreadful day for you but an exciting one for the rest of those around you. Your brother spent all day in the bathroom, grooming himself to protection for his date. You unfortunately agreed to walking to his college to pick him up, considering it’s not that far away from your college— possibly a 15 minute walk.
Sanzu cheered, arms whipping in the air as he finally finished the last of his work. “Fucking finally! Now I can get wasted!” His cheer could be heard throughout the headquarters.
“Took him long enough.” Kokonoi smirked as he adjusted his sleeves.
“Surprised he actually got it done.” Kakucho grabs his car keys before tossing them to Rin, who catches them with an open hand on the side.
“Where’s Ran?” Kokonoi asks as he watched Rin glance down checking his phone for the time.
“Said he’d meet us there— Come on pothead! Let’s go!” Answering Kokonoi’s question before yelling at Sanzu who was still in his office.
“Hold on! I’m changing!” Sanzu yelled back while flipping him off— As if anyone would be able to see.
“You sure you don’t wanna come boss?” Kakucho cocked his eyebrow at the smaller male who was eating some snack Takeomi had brought. A muffled “no” was enough as he continued to munch away.
“Me and Mikey have a business meeting to attend, some well-off cocksucker wants a piece of Bonten. Offering a pretty penny too.” Takeomi elaborates on his boss’s decline.
“Run his pockets dry.” With a devious smirk Kokonoi’s eyes flicker at the sound of money.
“Of course.” The same smirk is returned by Takeomi. Rin and Kakucho can only shake their heads— Poor kid doesn’t even know what’s coming to him.
“Alrigjt let’s go!” Sanzu says as he made his way down to the main lobby. Dressed in an white button up shirt with crisp slacks and a gold belt as accent. Three of his buttons are loose, revealing just a sneak peak of his toned body. Three chains are around his neck and his ears are covered in piercings.
“Took your ass long enough.” A grumble from Rin before giving Sanzu a light side kick to his leg, only for it to be returned by a pinch to the side of his stomach.
“You guys are worse then children, let’s go!” Kokonoi snatched the keys from Rin, leaving the door before he could complain— he really wanted to drive.
“See ya later boss!” Sanzu waves with a closed eye smile, “Don’t die old man!” He said to his brother only to get flipped off— with love.
The rest of the men showed their respect by bowing to Takeomi and Mikey before leaving to their destination. The car ride was, chaotic to say the least— Rin and Sanzu fought for the front seat, which resulted in Rindou yanking Sanzu by his collar. Pulling him away from the front door before hopping in himself.
Like the petty man Sanzu is, he sat directly behind Rin— he was going to make his life a living hell. Kakucho was whining with a childish pout because Kokonoi refused to turn up the radio. While those two were going back and forth, Sanzu was yanking Rindou's hair, pulling his seat belt, and the final straw— Blew on his neck.
“I swear to fucking god Sanzu, I will shoot you!” Whipping his head back to glare at the childish man behind him.
“Eat shit chicken little.” Sticking his tongue out all smugly only ticked Rindou off. Quickly unbuckling his seat belt, he reached over the side of his seat— Arms extended wide as he aimed for Sanzu’s neck. A strain appeared on both of their foreheads, Sanzu leaning back on Kakucho— An innocent bystander, trying to dodge Rin’s attack. Legs flaring in the air as he cursed him with insults.
“GET THE FUCK OFF OF ME!”Kakucho yelled trying to push Sanzu off which only resulted in Sanzu leaning back more, if he went up then he’d surely find demise by Rin’s hands. Which were still trying to attack him.
“TELL MR. “THE SKY IS FALLING” TO FUCK OFF FIRST!” A quote directly from Chicken Little.
“FUCKING—” Rin couldn’t even get his insult out before Kokonoi harshly stomped on the breaks, the car stopping adrupyly. The sudden jerk of the car had Kakucho pushed against the car door with Sanzu laying on his stomach with his legs in the air. Rin didn’t fare any better as he was whipped back into his seat, his head hit against the door.
“Sit your asses down and shut up or I swear to whatever God you idiots believe in— I will turn this bitch around.” A stern voice reminiscent to a mother caused the boys to sit in their seat, backs straight, seatbelts on, and quiet.
“Fucking imbeciles.” He grumbled as he began to drive again. He couldn’t wait for this drive to be over.
Tumblr media
“Okay! Y/n, I’m leaving now! I’ll call you later, alright?” Your brother yelled from downstairs.
“Alright! Don’t die loser!” You yelled back from the safety of your room, you heard the door slam close— He was extremely excited. He scored a date with his highschool crush, you were proud of him. Which, was weird to say, you both never had the best of relationships but you made it work. One thing you can thank Ran, ever since that terrible heartbreak you and your brother have been closer than ever. Almost like best friends— Speaking of best friends, you were pissed at Haru.
He has a life, yes, you knew that, but he promised. You really needed him and he was a no show, but you knew he had no control over life. You stared at your T.V. as you watched the News cover the recent explosion at the dock— It seemed so random yet planned out, obviously the senator had some enemies.
Well, now you were bored and Haru isn’t an option, your mother is getting waxed— Unfortunately, you know exactly why. Disgusting parents. And you no longer talk to Ran, so like any logical person would do when their bored. You went to sleep.
Tumblr media
By the time Rin and the crew made it, Ran was waiting outside the frat house looking at his watch, dressed in a long black wool trench coat that rested on his shoulders, the shirt underneath was a lilac button up shirt that only had the bottom buttons done, with white loose pants— His hair wasn’t in his normal braids, for this occasion he wore his hair in a ponytail. He looked as if he belonged in a model magazine.
The me finally pulled up in their car, Kokonoi wearing a face of annoyance while the others bicker behind him— When their eyes and Ran’s locked, the men froze. Slightly worried about what might come their way, after all he did know about them and Y/n. With each step Ran took towards them they slightly stepped back.
“Stop running, I’m not gonna hurt you.” He sighs placing one hand on Kokonoi’s shoulder and the other on Kakucho’s, a tight squeeze that has them wince in pain. “Unless you deserved to be hurt?” his eyes dart over to Sanzu who just smiled. The men shook their head and Rin sighed at his brother’s action. After releasing their shoulders he made his way to Sanzu, they both smiled at each ither— Fake. With a quick pull back Ran’s fist met Sanzu’s stomach. Hands wrapping around the injured spot he glared at the man who caused his pain.
“You bastard..” A strain in his voice.
“Pay back, not only for talking to my beloved but also for that stupid stunt at the dock.” His hand wrapped around Sanzu’s shoulder. “We’re good now~” Teasing voice as he smiled at his injured state, Kokonoi and Kakucho are grateful it wasn’t them. Ran’s punches hurt.
With that, they all made their way into the frat house. Ready to drink the night away and sleep with whoever puts it out, except Ran wasn’t all that drunk and he wasn’t interested in sex. He didn’t even want to be here but he went because Rin wanted him to, well, at least he can drive them back home because the men are wasted. Laughing and joking with the frat boys and sorority girls as they play beer pong or chug whatever disgusting concoction they were given as a dare— Ran will not miss the college life once he graduates. Slowly sipping on his Gin tonic he scans the party, looking for anything interesting and trying to ignore the sounds of Kakucho vomiting.
“You don’t look like you’re enjoying the party bro!” A harsh slap on his back as him scowling at the man behind him— Gin.
“Not my usual nor preferred setting.” Ran sighed.
“Well, we have a bunch of drinks and girls… Or guys if you’re into that.” Ran chuckled at Gin trying to be all inclusive, “But try and socialize! Nobody likes a brooder, you’re not batman!” He laughs, loudly as he raises his finger, signaling for someone to get him a beer. As Ran looks at him, his features seem somewhat, familiar. As if he’s seen him before, he just can’t quite place it.
As Gin opens his mouth to speak to Ran his attention goes elsewhere, to one of his drunk friends.
“NO! Bad Arnold! We don’t eat the house plants!” And with that he’s running off to his friend who he yells at as if he’s a dog. A shake of Ran’s head with a soft smile, it’s not bad here.
An hour has passed and the party is still going strong, people are still coming and the night is young. But the ones who’ve been here since the party began are wasted, Gin is all over some girl as he giggles in her ear. Sanzu and Rindou are drawing on Kakucho’s face while Kokonoi is trying to teach some poor girl about proper financing— He’s definitely not getting laid tonight, and Ran is only on his third drink. He doesn’t feel not even a buzz.
You would hate it here he thought to himself.
Tumblr media
And he was right, you hated every second trying to find your idiotic brother who called you talking about how horses are just un-evolved unicorns. You decided it was time for him to go home, so you walked here— and it was freezing. When you finally find your brother, you’re kicking his ass. You weave your way through the crowd, bumping into many people, being pushed around on accident by dancing students. God you hate it here.
Maybe it was by divine fate that Ran spotted you through the crowd, or maybe it was work of the devil, but you were here. At the same time he was— he doesn’t believe in meant to be, but he will definitely be thanking Rindou for dragging him out here.
“Y/n, funny seeing you here.” You hate your life. Ran stands tall in front of you, eyes peering down. He’s trying his hardest not to seem desperate and you want to run away, last time you saw him you were being chased by a bunch of nobodies— This isn’t this you planned for your night to go
“Yeah..” You walk around him, trying to avoid any more conversation. You just wanna go home.
“What are you doing here?” His hand wrapped around your waist hesitantly when he saw your body get pushed by some guy dancing. You tried to push his hand off but the grip got tighter, just for a little bit he thought. Just wants to touch you a little bit longer.
“Im looking for my brother.” You spoke, awfully aware of the hand on your waist. Unfortunately, he couldn’t hear you. Not with his mind racing, heart thumping, and music blaring. He guides you up the stairs, watching your steps more then his.
“Get out.” He glares at the couple who were kissing in the room— your hands cover your eyes as the couple were practically naked, obviously about to engage in something more than kissing. Scrambling to put their clothes on they hurried as Ran's glare got colder by the second.
“You can’t just-!” His body engulfed yours, head buried in your neck as he wrapped his arms around your body the moment they left. Stunned you stood there for a moment, embracing him until you realized— “What are you doing? Get off of me!” You tried to push him off, but you couldn’t. His grip was too strong.
“You’re so mean.” His voice was a whisper, you wouldn’t be able to hear it if he wasn’t so close. His leg kicked the door closed before pushing you against it, now you’re closed off.
“You didn’t even let me explain, you just blocked me. You’re so cruel Y/n.” Maybe he was a little tipsy, his voice sounded so broken. So fragile, you couldn’t help but feel bad. Your throat ran dry as he whined in your ear. “I missed you, I’ve missed you so much.”
“You don’t miss me, you miss your plaything.” Your voice was as hushed as his— The music faded out, the only thing you could focus on was him, as if you were the only people in the world.
“I miss that too—” He chuckles before looking you in your eyes, “But I really miss your smile and your laugh, I miss when you would insult me and spend time with me.” He continues.
“You mean before you ruined it.” A soft glare at him, you’re still upset. “You did this to yourself, Ran. Fuck— You really hurt me.”
“I know, I know, but I can explain. Please, just give me the chance to explain…” Desperate and vulnerable, the great Ran Haitani is desperate for you. You agreed, maybe it’s because you want to forgive him or the rush of power you feel at the fact that he’s so weak for you— you didn’t realize it before.
“I love you, Y/n. Before you say anything, I know we haven’t known each other long and we started off wrong— so wrong.” His head finds it way back to your neck, “But I do, you mean everything to me. You creeped your way into my heart and before I knew it, I was in love with you. What I said was wrong, I was jealous.” He turned his head to look at you and your face was flushed. He blew against your neck to catch your attention and it worked.
“I don’t want anyone else around you but me.” A small laugh left his mouth in disappointment, “Selfish right? But it’s true, I want to be the only one around you. Forever and always. I want to try again, the right way— Take you out on a date, spoil you rotten, wanna feel nervous when we first hold hands n’ I wanna kiss you, n’ do other things, but I wanna do it right.” He placed a tender kiss on your neck, not sexual or with any hidden intent. Just a kiss, he’s showing you how much he wants to do better.
“Please.” He muttered through the kiss and it takes you a while to answer— It’s hard to believe that the one and only Ran is in love with you. Someone who has no social power, average looks (in your eyes), and no life. Why would he want you? You think it’s a joke, that small flicker of insecurity but the look on Ran’s face tells you it’s genuine. He’s in love with you.
Tears fall from your eyes and soft sniffles leave your mouth, “Its not a joke right?” You sniffle again as your tears become apparent to Ran.
“Y/n…” He’s shut up by you speaking again.
“You really love me? You really mean it?” Now you sound desperate as your tears drip onto Ran, he can’t help by feel his lip quiver and his eyes burn.
“Every word, dove. Every fucking word.” He whispers as his forehead touches yours, “I fucking adore you.” Fuck— Now he’s crying. He hasn’t cried since his mother passed, you really are something else. Two years slip from his eyes, wetting his cheeks as he pulls you closer. Kissing your forehead with soft circles on the smalls of your back.
“I love you too Ran.” There it is—

Ryuichi Sakamoto, the Japanese musician whose remarkably eclectic career straddled pop, experimentalism and Oscar-winning film composition, has died aged 71.
As a member of Yellow Magic Orchestra alongside Haruomi Hosono and Yukihiro Takahashi, Sakamoto created joyous and progressive electronic pop in the late 1970s and early 1980s, alongside solo releases. He acted alongside David Bowie in the 1983 film Merry Christmas, Mr Lawrence and composed its celebrated theme, the first in a series of film scores including Oscar-winning work in 1987 with David Byrne and Cong Su for Bernardo Bertolucci’s The Last Emperor.
Sakamoto had twice been diagnosed with cancer. In 2014, he took a year off from music as he recovered from throat cancer, describing the illness as “the most harsh, physically painful time in my life”.
In January 2021, he announced he had been diagnosed with bowel cancer, saying: “From now on, I will be living alongside cancer. But, I am hoping to make music for a little while longer.”
He was born in Tokyo in 1952, and began taking piano lessons aged six, later attending Tokyo University of the Arts to study music. He trained on early synthesizers, and enthused by everything from Debussy to Kraftwerk, began working on various musical projects, including with Hosono and Takahashi. After Sakamoto released his 1978 solo debut, Thousand Knives – playing melodies that harked back to traditional Japanese music on electronic equipment – the trio realised their vision for a Japanese disco-pop group, Yellow Magic Orchestra (YMO).
The group became a huge success in Japan – in 1980, two of their albums stayed at No 1 and No 2 in the charts for seven weeks, and they had seven Top 5 albums during their career. “Accidentally the three of us became very popular,” he remembered in 2018. “Walking the street in Tokyo, people pointed at me. I hated it.”
Their English-language lyrics helped them cross over into the US, where they appeared on the TV show Soul Train, and their electronic production influenced early hip-hop and electro scenes. Michael Jackson covered their song Behind the Mask and intended to include it on Thriller, but a royalties disagreement prevented it.
Their track Computer Game was also a Top 20 hit in the UK. YMO went on hiatus in 1984, though occasionally reunited for releases and reunion concerts.
Alongside YMO, Sakamoto continued releasing solo albums including 1980’s B-2 Unit, another influence on the robotically funky sound of electro that also foreshadowed other dance music styles. After focusing purely on solo work, he forged further connections in the west, collaborating with musicians including Iggy Pop, Robert Wyatt, Laurie Anderson, David Sylvian and more. Sylvian contributed Forbidden Colours, a vocal version of one of Sakamoto’s most famous works, the theme to second world war drama Merry Christmas, Mr Lawrence. Sakamoto also starred in the film as a prisoner of war camp commander.
Following The Last Emperor (in which he also had an acting role), he collaborated with Bernardo Bertolucci again for The Last Buddha, and with Merry Christmas, Mr Lawrence director Nagisa Oshima for Gohatto. He also scored two films by Brian De Palma (Snake Eyes and Femme Fatale), plus Wild Palms for Oliver Stone, High Heels for Pedro Almodóvar, the 1990 film adaptation of The Handmaid’s Tale, and more. His 2015 score for Alejandro González Iñárritu’s film The Revenant was nominated for Golden Globe, Bafta and Grammy awards. In 2019, he composed the music for an episode of dystopian TV drama series Black Mirror. He took no further acting roles, aside from appearing as a film director in Rain, a music video for Madonna.
Sakamoto released a steady schedule of solo releases throughout the 1990s and onwards, and wrote a piece for the opening ceremony of the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona. In 1999 he debuted the multimedia opera project Life, in collaboration with artist Shiro Takatani with contributions from Bertolucci, Pina Bausch and more. He and Takatani extended the concept into installation work from 2007 onwards.
Also in 2007, he began the ambitious Schola project, curating 17 compilations of global music ranging from composers such as Ravel and Beethoven to Japanese pop. It was released via his record label Commmons, set up in 2006, which has also released work by artists including Boredoms and OOIOO.
In 2002, he began a fruitful partnership with German musician Carsten Nicolai, who used his Alva Noto alias for four collaborative albums of minimalist electronica.
Sakamoto was also an environmental campaigner, opposing the use of nuclear power, and creating the forestry project More Trees to enable carbon offsetting.
In 1982, Sakamoto married Japanese pop musician Akiko Yano, a touring member of YMO and a successful solo artist in her own right. They split in 1992, and eventually filed for divorce in 2006. They had a daughter, pop singer Miu Sakamoto.
Since the early 1990s, Sakamoto has been in a relationship with Norika Sora. Their son Neo Sora contributed to a documentary, Ryuichi Sakamoto: Coda, directed by Stephen Nomura Schible in 2018.

Anime Awards 2021: Meet the Judges & Categories Revealed!
As the insanity that has been 2020 comes to a close, we begin to look towards the future, and to the awards show that captures the best of the year in the world of anime: the Anime Awards! Today, we’ll be formally introducing you to our incredible class of judges from around the world who helped curate and craft the nominees we’ll soon be revealing. But first — we would like to introduce you to the categories for this year’s event!
Tumblr media
    Anime of the Year <!--td {border: 1px solid #ccc;}br {mso-data-placement:same-cell;}--> Best Animation <!--td {border: 1px solid #ccc;}br {mso-data-placement:same-cell;}--> Best Opening Sequence (OP) <!--td {border: 1px solid #ccc;}br {mso-data-placement:same-cell;}--> Best Ending Sequence (ED) <!--td {border: 1px solid #ccc;}br {mso-data-placement:same-cell;}--> Best Boy <!--td {border: 1px solid #ccc;}br {mso-data-placement:same-cell;}--> Best Girl Best Score <!--td {border: 1px solid #ccc;}br {mso-data-placement:same-cell;}--> Best Performance by a Voice Actor (Japanese) <!--td {border: 1px solid #ccc;}br {mso-data-placement:same-cell;}--> Best Performance by a Voice Actor (English) <!--td {border: 1px solid #ccc;}br {mso-data-placement:same-cell;}--> Best Director <!--td {border: 1px solid #ccc;}br {mso-data-placement:same-cell;}--> Best Character Design <!--td {border: 1px solid #ccc;}br {mso-data-placement:same-cell;}--> Best Protagonist <!--td {border: 1px solid #ccc;}br {mso-data-placement:same-cell;}--> Best Antagonist <!--td {border: 1px solid #ccc;}br {mso-data-placement:same-cell;}--> Best Fight Scene <!--td {border: 1px solid #ccc;}br {mso-data-placement:same-cell;}--> Best Couple <!--td {border: 1px solid #ccc;}br {mso-data-placement:same-cell;}--> Best Drama <!--td {border: 1px solid #ccc;}br {mso-data-placement:same-cell;}--> Best Fantasy <!--td {border: 1px solid #ccc;}br {mso-data-placement:same-cell;}--> Best Comedy
If these categories look familiar, that’s for good reason; they’re the same ones we used last year. After carefully considering voting behavior, audience feedback, social media engagement, and insights from industry leaders, we were happy to find a collection of categories that satisfied the most needs for the most people, and allowed the greatest number of anime to be celebrated with the world. The nominees themselves are one of the most exciting parts of the Anime Awards, and in just one short month, the six nominees per category will be shared with the world on the Anime Awards Website. Please keep an eye out for more details, and fun ways to share your votes and predictions with your fellow fans.
Tumblr media
Last year, we added more judges than ever before — that is, until now! As both the audience of Crunchyroll and the Anime Awards becomes increasingly international, so too has the panel of judges. With more than fifty judges representing dozens of unique countries and cultures around the world from all walks of life, I can safely say that this year’s class of judges is the best the Anime Awards has ever had.
The judges for the Anime Awards play a critical role, determining the nominees for every category in an independent capacity, based entirely on their own critical perspectives and opinions of the anime released in the last year. Judges were hand-selected by Crunchyroll’s community team based on their reputation, regard, and credibility, and represent large swaths of the huge diversity that can be found in the anime fandom at large.
Just as with last year, the judge nomination process will also go towards the final winners of each Anime Award, weighed 70:30 with fan votes. Based on the last four years of Anime Awards, we found that this ratio achieved the most meaningful results: the fan vote was impactful and flipped several categories, but the awards were not simply a popularity contest and many underrated titles were still able to take home awards. We saw more positivity than ever before with last year’s changes, and so we're happy to keep this same ratio for this year's event.
As a note the bios you’ll see below were written by the judges in their language of choice and have been adopted for your pleasure in whichever language you’re reading right now. Beyond translation, they have only been altered by the Crunchyroll team for clarity. Without further delay, please meet our judges for the 2021 Anime Awards!
  Meet the Judges!
Ajay Stewart     Ajay, better known online as “AnimeAjay”, is a British anime fan, specialising in all things related to animation. His YouTube and Twitter presence are focused on the behind-the-scenes at Toei Animation, and has become the go-to source for fans looking to know the ins and outs of animation, and who was responsible for their favourite scenes.
Alfonso "Fonzy" Ortiz     Alfonso "Fonzy" Ortiz is the Senior Manager for qdopp Inc. and Editor-in-Chief for Honey's Anime. Originally from Texas, he was a cook for 13 years, lived in LA and Tokyo where he found his dream job working in the anime and gaming industry, and has just under a decade of experience as well. Honey’s Anime is his passion and loves helping to bring as much great content to readers about the anime, manga, and gaming industry. It’s the best place for anime enthusiasts as we are all fans!
Andrew McDanell     After consuming anime for over 25 years, Andrew started up the Otaku Spirit Animecast podcast with his brother, Chris.  Connecting with fans from many countries across the world, their goal has always been to break from the mold and serve a community with a positive and entertaining view of the fandom they love so much.  With over 1300 anime titles under his belt and passing 900 anime reviews recorded, Andrew has enjoyed giving every show a chance and never falls onto the 3 episode rule.
Antonio Escudero     Antionio Escudero has been a fan of anime, manga, and video games for over 30 years and considers it his lifestyle. He's currently part of the editorial team of Misión Tokyo, where he writes to promote both his passion for and the legal consumption of Japanese culture.
Bruno De La Cruz     Journalist for AnimeLand magazine and the French anime/manga press since 2014.
Burak Dogan     Burak Dogan is an editor and press contact at the German anime news website Anime2You. Besides covering News and reviewing countless anime and manga releases on the German market, he can also be met at various conventions. Since 2011, he has watched over 1,000 individual shows.
bxakid (Julien)     Julien, or bxakid is a french content creator and journalist for Webedia. Anime enthusiast forever, one waifu at a time. Caitlin Enger    Caitlin Moore has been an anime fan since it cost $30 for a two-episode VHS tape. She has been writing about anime every chance she’s gotten since high school, and now is a staff writer for Anime Feminist and contributes regularly to Anime News Network as well as running panels at conventions and podcasting every chance she gets. She analyzes anime through a progressive, intersectional lens and has a deep love of shojo and josei manga and anime.
Caroline Segarra     Working as an animator, journalist, streamer, and voice-over artist, Caroline's specialties include Japan, anime, manga, and Japanese music. Caroline is also founder of the audiovisual production company Fantastic Raccoon, is currently on LeStream, and has worked at Nolife, Japan FM, Japan LifeStyle.
Clarissa Graffeo     Clarissa Graffeo is one-third of the Anime World Order podcast and occasional contributing writer for Otaku USA magazine. As a fan of anime and manga for over 20 years that makes her practically ancient by anime fan and Hollywood standards, and she should probably have more to show for it. Clarissa has run numerous panels at East coast conventions both alone and with her fellow AWO hosts, on a variety of topics such as BL, Black Jack, Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, anime openings, and building plastic model kits. In both the podcast and convention panels, she attempts to balance detailed discussions of individual works and the industry with accessibility to new viewers, and is hopefully successful at least some of the time.
Daryl Surat     Having just turned 40, Daryl Surat is a revenant otaku bound in human flesh and er, NOT inked in blood. Having spent the majority of over 25 years as an anime fan existing in near isolation, trapped in the MMO that is social media, the 2020 quarantine hasn’t really been noticeable! As a contributor to Otaku USA Magazine (https://ift.tt/187UJdS) as well as the Anime World Order podcast (www.animeworldorder.com), Daryl is A HUNDRED PERCENT SURE all of the deserving nominations were proposed by him.
Михаил Судаков     Creator of the KG-Portal.ru website, anime lover with 20 years of experience, admirer of Makoto Shinkai, Hayao Miyazaki and P.A. Works. Big fan and collector of retro games, retro computers and retro consoles. Dawn H    Dawn (aka "Usamimi") is the producer/host of The Anime Nostalgia Podcast, a mix of waxing nostalgic with fellow older fans while introducing younger fans to older titles! The podcast also serves as an oral history from before things like streaming & social media were commonplace, and how anime & manga fandom has always been diverse. She's used her knowledge to write for outlets like Anime News Network and Crunchyroll, & has helped on multiple anime releases from AnimEigo & Discotek Media.
Dennis Vsesvyatskyi     CEO of 2x2 tv-channel, home of adult animation in Russia. 2x2 is broadcasting international animation and anime-hits since 2007 and has it's own animation studio. Brand 2x2 has a significant cultural status among russian viewers and fans of animation and is expanding it's influence every year with new shows, art-statements and collaborations. Our motto is: "Don't grow up, it's a trap!".
Diego Lima     IGN Brazil reporter, writing about the entertainment industry since 2014. Started career as a host for Gazeta Games, on Radio Gazeta, and then as the host of a gaming radio show at Band FM, discussing classic titles. Joined IGN Brazil in 2017, as a gaming and anime specialist.
