Mafia: Definitive Edition

Mafia is a 3rd person open-world action adventure video game, following the tale of Tommy Angelo, a cab driver thrust into the world of organized crime.

Overview -

Mafia: Definitive Edition is a remake of the original Mafia game that was released back in 2002. Mafia: Definitive Edition sets an example of how a remake should be. 

Mafia follows the fun, thrilling and intense journey of Tommy Angelo that immerses players for hours on end, with its amazing open world, varying gameplay and combat.

Gameplay -

Mafia heavily relies on driving with driving mechanics very similar to that of many open world games out there. The driving sections of the game could’ve been a lot more fun if the handling wasn’t so frustrating at times, but it does what it’s supposed to.

The most exciting part about playing a game set in the early 1900′s is the collection of vintage cars such games have. Mafia has a huge collection of said cars and God are they beautiful! The game gets every detail of the cars right, from the body, to its acceleration, to its handling and more. This might not seem like that big a deal for most players, but it is for some who are into such cars (like me).

The game features a fun and engaging combat system that allows players to equip up to 2 long range weapons, a melee weapon, grenades and Molotov's. Even with all the different ways players can take out enemies, the most satisfying way to take them out, at least for me, was fist fighting them. Players can pick up and equip weapons from either defeated enemies or by visiting Vinny. 

What makes the combat so much fun is the AI’s reactions to the player and the scripted events in place, providing a stellar combat experience.

Just when you think the game can’t any better, it manages to add more variation to the gameplay with its excellent pacing and by transitioning from one type of gameplay to the other. The game manages to transition from intense combat sequences, to the calmer sections of the game - exploration, to intense car chases, to fun and satisfying stealth experiences, without lingering on any one type of gameplay for too long. This helps keep the experience fresh and exciting for hours on end.

Mafia’s world is beautifully designed to fit the theme 2k was going for. The incredible world design, excellent cast of characters, breathtaking visuals and the stunning attention to detail all account for an incredible experience this game promises to deliver.

Verdict - 

Mafia: Definitive Edition is not only an incredible remake of the original game, but is also a brilliant game that strives to provide a stellar experience throughout, making it deserving of all the acclaim and a must play for fans of the genre.

1.   What was their first impression of each other?

benny thought sam was a little,,,, too grown-up for a kid and sam thought benny was honestly. a freak because he heard all those stories abt marcu and sergio and just. lumped benny in with them. i mean, neither of them were wrong lmao

2.   What is their ship name?

you can’t hurry love from that song by the supremes. mostly it’s a reference to how long it took for them to actually get together together lmao

4.   What was their relationship like before they got together?

lots and lots of yearning--- they were almost about to confess to each other when the big family split happened, so that just. pushed sam back into repression + benny into even more yearning. lots of benny turning up at salieri’s uninvited + pretending the split hadn’t really happened and sam letting him get away with it despite paulie’s many, many protests + lots of meetings at the corleone. just to talk at the bar. just to talk. 

15.  Describe your favorite moment of that ship!

when sam sucker punched benny in the street because he saw benny talking to ace out in the street and thought that benny was a bar creep bc ace always always looks for trouble with older men pre-tommy + it was dark and his older brother instincts took over :3 cue lots and lots of benny crying bc oh my god it’s me you asshole + ace being incredibly horrified bc oh my god sam it’s just benny that kind of. cumulates into a v v shame-faced apology and a rather substantial amount of cuddling when. no one’s looking. (it’s all v v complicated i know i’m sorry)

19.  Talk about a headcanon you’ve never talked about before.

eventually they bring the family back together in a way. i mean, even though salieri hands the reins to the family over to ace, ace and tommy move to empire bay (and live their best lives), leaving sam (and paulie) technically in charge. and benny becomes don at morello’s behest (and bc sergio doesn’t want to do it bc he’s so busy making eyes at daisy). so even though the family doesn’t merge back into one, there’s a steady alliance between them that their fathers could’ve never dreamed of happening once again.

1.  What was their first impression of each other?

valerie thought rusty was an idiot (but charming-- something in that smile lmao) & rusty thought her tongue was so sharp it could’ve stabbed him right through the gut and he wouldn’t have minded for a minute

3.  Describe their relationship dynamic.

it’s difficult to put into words. like. they love each other but their personalities are both so volatile on different levels. rusty’s the cynical bastard who makes off-color jokes and ruins everything he touches. valerie’s the hot-headed menace who speaks her mind when and where she likes, everyone else be damned. when they have good times, they’re really really good and when they have bad times, it’s just horrible. they still act like they’re married though, which throws everyone else for a loop, but tbh i think they’re both codependent on each other in a way, so they can’t let go. they’re working on it though. 

9.  What made them realize they were in love?

mmm when rusty made one of his signature off-color jokes & valerie laughed so hard she thought she would cry. and rusty watching her and realizing that he’d probably loved her from the first moment he saw her, disgustingly cliche as that is

they did get married! valerie brought it up & was quite um. simple about it. literally told rusty third time’s the charm, right? and he figured it could work, so he said yes. that + also there was the little. accident. that was their charming little girl, darlene :3 

13.  Who dies first? How does the other one react?

rusty. i mean, look at the man’s lifestyle habits. there’s no way he’s reaching past 60, even though i’m a nice person and my city now. valerie’s pretty cut up about it. i mean like, rusty wasn’t exactly a great husband but he was her best friend and well. you spend that long & have such a complicated relationship w someone, it hurts when they’re gone. she gets a bit quieter for a while after his death-- processing grief and all that. i like to think she keeps a bottle of his favorite somewhere in the house. for special occasions and especially when she misses him, which is. more than she’d like to admit

15.  Describe your favorite moment of that ship!

that absolute game of cat-and-mouse they play where rusty’s partner drops him off at valerie’s house instead of his apartment and she lets him try and find where she’s hidden the keys out front this time :3 they always end up sleeping tgt like a pair of clowns but honestly neither of them mind fdhsjkfadsk it’s all just. weird weird foreplay to them

benny is a Menace who gets v v protective of sam around salieri + older members of the gang but absolutely loves to try and drag sam into as much shenanigans as possible while sam just. is v v tired of benny’s shit but he loves him too much to say so fhdsjakfdsfdsk 

9.  What made them realize they were in love?

it was kind of always there honestly... but they probably realize it in little pieces when they’re adults :) the back-of-hand touches and fleeting kisses in cars and bars and hotel rooms :) all that jazz :)

they don’t get married, surprisingly! but it’s just a matter of profession + choice. they know they love each other more than marriage can attest to. 

13.   Who dies first? How does the other one react?

in the au we pretend is canon? benny, surprisingly! in golden canon? benny, natural causes. or probably all that goddamn smoking x i’m not gonna elaborate more bc i love them too much to think of either of them well... yknow. not in golden canon :) but in the au canon? benny has to die bc ennio wants the morellos obliterated. sam probably does his best to let benny slip loose, but benny would stand and fight anyways. he loves sam but no one fucks with his family. and that’s what sends him to his death--- probably at tommy or ace’s hand
