1980 - May Pang in "Jet Set Superstar" with Ménage à Trois, including actor Gabriel Byrne (pt 1).

In 1980 the actor Gabriel Byrne joined by New Yorkers May Pang and Pandora Moore release the single ‘Jet Set Superstar’ under the name Ménage à Trois.

‘Jet Set Superstar’ is written by Barry Devlin of Horslips fame and co-produced and arranged by his bandmate Jim Lockhart. Gabriel Byrne, best known for his role in the RTÉ television drama ’Bracken’ supplies the male vocals. May Pang and Pandora Moore do not sing on the record and the female vocals are recorded by Twink.

The song features in the short film ‘I Wish That I Could Boogie’. This funny spoof film looks at Barry Devlin’s song from the time of its conception until it is recorded onto disc. Casting Gabriel Byrne as a French jet-setter alongside May Pang and Pandora Moore, the film also involves choreographer Mavis Ascott and photographer Tony Higgins. ‘I Wish That I Could Boogie’ was broadcast on 29 September 1980. The producer and director is Michael Murphy.

cora had been with the company for some time now, and at this point, felt like she had eyes and ears everywhere. so it didn't come as too great a surprise when she'd heart toni and her ex broke up and sides had started to be taken around the theatre. she, obviously, was on toni's, feeling a sense of loyalty to the girl despite how little they actually knew each other. yet here she was, being the ear for the other to talk her shit into, and cora was eagerly willing to say anything toni wantd to hear to make her feel better. Letting it be known that pranks are not May exclusive! I found a video of Devlin Defransesco blasting Calum Ilott with an airhorn on a boat in the Bahamas (?) and a few drivers dressed up as race suit mannequins to scare a few Indy office employees at Halloween. My personal favorite was when Hinch had the toilet seat on his bus stolen in Japan and mailed back to him. These guys are evil and should not be trusted... I'm only going to attempt to recount Indy 500 pranks

I have no idea why the prank wars started but I can make a good guess. Indycar is American and Americans have lots of weird traditions. Why do we blow stuff up on 4th of July that has nothing to do with gaining out independence? It's awesome that's why LMFAO From what I've gathered in the next few paragraphs, the pranks likely started between friends and slowly spread as a greater tradition at IMS

2022 definitely has the best documentation of the prank war but I'm unsure when the Indy 500 Prank Wars™ truly started. It's hard to find evidence for a lot of these and the furthest back prank I could find a story about was in the 1960s; Chuck Hulse and Bobby Marshman got access to the intercoms system and embarrassed Johnny Rutherford by announcing that he needed to, "Please meet your wife and kids at the garage area gate." Rutherford didn't have a wife and kids, only his girlfriend who's parents he was meeting for the first time in that moment.

In the 2000s, there seemed to be a large amount of pranks going on at IMS. Dario Franchitti, Tony Kanaan, Scott Dixon, Dan Wheldon, and Bryan Herta were the pranksters who caused most of the chaos. One of the pranks thrown around a lot was the time Dario Franchitti and Bryan Herta sawing Tony Kanaan. This era of pranks stopped in 2011 following the death of Dan Wheldon in a racing accident.

2015 —

The furthest back prank I could find (with evidence) was in 2015 when Scott Dixon, Tony Kahaan, and Dario Franchitti wrapped their teammate's (Sage Karam) car bubble gum pink before the 500.

2016 —

Literally all I could find was spam bots... There’s literally HUNDREDS of these posts. I think Josef Newgarden mightve dressed up as a middle aged reported then pranked fellow Indy 500 competitors... Not sure I need 500 Twitter accounts to tell me

2017 —

Marco Andretti had a train horn placed in his motorhome that periodically went off:

In addition to these cups, Conor Daly was victim to a very nasty glitter bomb in his motorhome. He claims there were 1,000 ballons filled with glitter in his bedroom. I didn't find picture proof of the actual mess but this 100% happened and the story is kind of funny. We don't really know who exactly did this but the usual suspects are Marco Andretti, Tony Kahaan, and Alexander Rossi. Kahaan denies it and would only reveal who truly did it if Daly won the 500. Andretti said he was at home and Graham Rahal (who was accused for some reason) said he didn't even know the prank had happened. Rossi claimed to be in New York for media day and said he had "a lot of alibis", then posted this image on Twitter lol:

So, who did it? Probably Tony Kahaan

2018 & 2019 —

I actually didn't notice this until I finished but there's no pranks from 2018 or 2019. I don't believe there truly were none but I couldn't find evidence of anything happening. Like I didn't even see a story mentioned from either year let alone an article or Twitter post. Ummmm... sorry guys lol

I will say that there was an autograph battle in 2018 between Simon Pagenaud and Josef Newgarden! Pagenaud hid in the back of a cop car while Newgarden was filming a video in a car. He was pulled over for an illegal u-turn and expired plates on his rented car. He was given a fake ticket with Pagenaud's signature on it. This technically happened during the month of May so I'm counting it!!!

2020 —

When someone took all the wheels off of Alexander Rossi's golf cart in the IMS bus lot:

Scott Mclaughlin was gifted a flock of balloon sheep. In 2021, there was approximately a ratio of five sheep per person in New Zealand:

Colton Herta also threatened to take a wheel off of someone's motorhome and had an idea to put 1,000 live crickets into someone's motorhome. I don't think a wheel was ever removed but someone became victim to the crickets in 2022 (though not by the hand of Herta).

2022 —

Tony Kanaan and Alexander Rossi put 400,000 Orbeez into Conor Daly's hot tub:

Conor Daly was robbed of his golf cart and Romain Grosjean lost all of his patio to Daly's hot tub:

Grosjean was robbed a second time when Alex Rossi, Colton Herta, and Will Power stole his scooter and placed it on top of the pagoda. Notably, Grosjean wasn't the one to actually find the scooter, he got a call from IMS security who found it on the roof. I genuinely went crazy looking for a photo but I couldn't find one. There's Tweets from Grosjean about the missing scooter, Daly snitched and said Herta was involved, and a journalist for AP Sports confirms that she has seen a picture of it:

Hinch saran wrapped Marco Andretti's golf carts together. I'm not sure if this was actually 2022 since the Tweet said "[a] throw back to some vintage bus lot bamboozlement" but it was posted in 2022 and nothing more than the Tweet comes up when I search:

Supposedly, Alex Rossi had his golf cart put on top of trash cans this year as well. I couldn't find photo evidence but David Malukas reported hearing noise outside of his motorhome and woke up to the cart on the trash cans.

Conor Daly said he put "a bunch of fake crickets" in Josef Newgarden's motorhome.

Someone locked the door on Colton Herta's motorhome with zip-ties.

2023 —

Scott Mclaughlin, Alex Palou, and Pato O'ward had their scooters messed with. Scott had his wrapped in what looks like saran wrap while Alex and Pato had a sparkly upgrade:

Marco Andretti bought James Hinchcliffe a right-hand-drive ‘97 Nissan March though this was considered a "fail" because Hinch liked the car:

Allegedly, Hinch was talking about Alex Rossi sawing the exhaust off his car on the broadcast. Hinch then said he felt "less bad" about what he planned on doing to Rossi's truck. I don't have proof nor do I know what happened to Rossi's truck (if anything).

2024 —

There's no Twitter posts about pranks in 2024 and according to Reddit, no one really seemed to post any. No one heard about prank stories other than Kyle Larson potentially losing his scooter. I can’t confirm or deny whether or not that was a prank or if someone actually stole his scooter.

2025 —

Kyle Kirkwood put a dollar on a fishing rod and tried to catch a fan:

That's not exactly a prank like the it has been in years past but at least it's... something. 2024 kinda seemed like the "second death" of the prank wars but I hope something silly happens this week or next week.

I definitely missed pranks but some of this stuff was recorded through stories that self-delete or simply no one got a picture. If anyone has anything I missed, please send it to me I'm totally open to editing this to add on more info!!!
