The MCU doesn’t understand Peter Parker.

Civil War did a good job introducing Spiderman into the fold organically and Homecoming was a nice starting point for Peter. BUT The MCU does not allow Peter Parker to face the consequences of his actions & grow on a personal level via his own journey (unattached to others like Tony). A lot of people praised Homecoming for how accurate the teenager vibes were yet that authenticity and insecurity is limited to Peter Parker and not extended to Spiderman’s world. In Infinity War, Peter’s jump into battle with Tony makes sense due to the foster parent relationship and hero mentality, but after they save Dr. Strange on the ship, Spiderman’s confidence should start to waver. Tony warns him this is a one way trip, and Peter shows no signs of hesitation or fear despite a clear lack of experience (which for an awkward & clumsy teenager is unrealistic AF). Instead the MCU uses him as comedic fodder, throwing movie references and innocent child-like naivete to brush aside the potential for a very human and relatable situation where a kid is trying to prove their worth, in way over their head, and could experience doubt, anxiety, and embarassment over the choices made and about to be made. Consequences do not carry over the MCU for Peter and that is a huge lost opportunity. Flash forward to Peter literally DYING AND SENSING DEATH ARRIVING at the end of Infinity War. A brilliant emotional beat and twist...that in no capacity ever affects Peter in Endgame or Far From Home. Tony Stark experienced immense PTSD, nightmares, and near heart attacks from just witnessing alien invaders. PETER FOUGHT A GOD IN SPACE & DIED and never is shown to be emotionally or psychologically effected. Instead all his character’s emotional capacity is put toward Tony Stark. Again. So this comparison and idea of legacy is more important than the characters arc or journey as a superhero earning his keep? If you don’t commit to consequences, the risks or stakes lose value. Peter doesn’t want to bring his suit to Europe because of TONY’S DEATH not HIS OWN. What about the notion of a uniform that places burden on oneself (LIKE a cop, a doctor, a soldier, or other roles that require immense willpower and are associated with heroism).    There’s no exploration of how his secret identity is damaged by the actions of his public one/vice versa? Tony Stark himself faced terrorist threats because of his Iron Man displays, Steve Rogers BEST FRIEND IN LIFE was purposefully used against him as a weapon that nearly killed him, Natasha Romanoff forgave Clint Barton for killing SHIELD operatives because she made difficult decisions fighting him and surviving THANKS to him when she was a teenager.

Where is Peter Parker’s personal struggle and when does it EVER manifest in the MCU? Will it ever NOT be undercut by jokes? You’d think after dying, he would question the choice to be Spiderman at all. In Spiderman 2 (Sam Raimi version) Peter concerns himself with how capable he is at saving and helping people. This fear and indecision leads to him LOSING his powers, a huge consequence and moment for audiences to relate to those everyday anxieties or responsibility and how capable a person can be. In the MCU this never happens. Peter knows other heroes exist and can fill in the blanks as he figures out his mental well being. If what’s left of the Avengers at the beginning of Endgame could handle Earth’s problems, post Endgame why couldn’t he ask one hero to fill in for New York (like DAREDEVIL) while he deals with everything he endured? The answer is the same reason why Peter Parker and Spiderman are consistently detached from one another’s actions; Tony Stark. Tony being a father figure is fine. But the MCU’s obsession with Peter taking that role and position means there’s no room to dive deeper into Peter’s intentions and Spiderman specific journey. The comics always explored the roots of very human choices and difficulties Peter faced, both in and out of costume, and WONDERFULLY manifested his human problems into hero problems by evolving those issues. But comedy and Tony Stark disable Peter from actively carving his own path and mark on the MCU. In Far From Home, at his lowest point, instead of having to deal with all the consequences thrown his way and created by his actions, Happy Hogan shows up in a cozy private plane, he jokes about Peter renting P0rn in Germany, gives him a half-assed pep talk about TONY, and suddenly building a new spiderman suit is all Peter needs to OVERCOME his emotional, psychological, and physical betrayal by Mysterio? What. The. Fuck.

Lastly, the MCU has used any consequential story thread for Peter and Spiderman as a punchline.THREE TIMES. In Civil War post credits, Peter jokes about being bullied is given a whole UI from Tony, gazes like a kid on christmas (with no regard as to how he almost died just for Tony Stark’s benefit). In Homecoming Aunt May finding out his secret is a joke and never analyzed deeper, making it a surface level punchline gag and removing the moral and familial weight of May and Peter’s relationship. In Far From Home Peter has his identity revealed at the end of Far From Home in the exact same punchline gag way. In the end, I think a big part of why Spiderman/Peter Parker are so disconnected is the creative team behind the films (solo ones especially). Directors are a dime a dozen, and while consistency is important (specifically for Avengers films) I think fresh ideas and perspectives are more important. I’m disappointed Jon Watts is returning for Spiderman 3, I was underwhelmed with Far From Home. Please let Peter Parker be himself, stop relying on Tony, CUT BACK THE JOKES that interrupt emotional beats, and give someone else the directing reigns. Please.

#random notes : Keisha Romero

*. Keisha was created more or less the same way as Ani ; she was originally just meant to be a love interest. It turns out I'm unable to create love interests who are 'just' love interests. I need a lot more.

*. Keisha is my only 'active' mom character. Ofc I've got other mom characters with an important role (like Izolda) but Keisha is the only young mom, struggling to raise her son on her own and that's something new.

*. From as long as she can remember, Keisha has been writing her thoughts in a diary. She loves her family and friends, but growing up in a household of seven people made it impossible to have privacy. She also never had a friend she could tell secrets to, cause she was always hanging out with a clique where secrets never stayed secrets very long.

*. People always assume she's black. She's actually mixed. Her dad is Dominican (hence the Latino surname) and her mom is African American. Everyone cusses in Spanish at home. Keisha never had trouble identifying as black cause she grew up in a colored neighborhood and most of her friends were African American. If anything, it's mostly her Latino side she had trouble to come up with, modulating her accent and never saying a word in Spanish around her friends.

*. Keisha's siblings are named Luz (older sister), Mielle (younger sister), and Joaquin (younger brother). That's all I'm just super fond of all those names really lol

*. Keisha's habit of keeping a diary got her in trouble at an early age, when her sisters found the said diary and read all the stuff Keisha had written about Tony. (You can imagine how silly and lovey-dovey a young girl rambling about her crush can be) Keisha never felt so embarrassed and she thought she was gonna die when her sisters asked her "Tony?? Tony from next door??! Oh my GooOOd Keishaa!". Luz and Mielle blackmailed her to do their homework and chores for a month after that.

*. She was always a very smart girl, and in high school it got her in trouble. Few students at that school would graduate, even less would make their way to college. Keisha never lost sight of her goal to study in a good university and for that, people saw her as an uptight bitch who thought she was better than everyone. Also, for that reason she never told anyone about her feelings for Tony cause of course, the fact she was crushing on a white boy would be seen as a sort of betrayal, or another evidence that she was doing everything she could to cut ties with her roots. Keisha never thought interracial relationships could inherently be a bad thing (which makes sense since she's biracial herself) but in the neighborhood she was living in, people had strong biases, especially among black community.

*. I've said it before but she has a huge thing for tattoos. She loves them. She would really love to get some ink but her grandma thinks it's horrible and ungodly and Keisha doesn't want to make her upset.

*. Keisha's family was surprised she'd name her son Noah. "It's a weird name." "Isn't it kinda Jewish??" And Keisha was like "fuck y'all he's my son, I bore him inside my womb for nine months, I get to name him, and you don't get to say nothing".

*. She took care of her baby on her own when he was born. Her boyfriend at the time was busy working, and even though he thought he was the father of the child back then, he never really bonded with the kid, although he was really supportive and nice. It was like if he knew, instinctively, that the child wasn't his.

*. When she went back to the Bronx, Keisha first tried to find a job as a teacher. But she only had a master's degree in sociology and the vacant teacher positions were only in middle school and high school and nobody wanted to hire her because she didn't have experience anyway. She thought about looking for a job in Manhattan but she'd never be able to make it with a child to take care of. As she was running out of time and money, she ended up working in a modest diner of her neighborhood.

*. She lived with her family for a year before she was able to find her own place and move in with her son. She loves her family but she didn't want Noah to grow up in such a suffocating atmosphere (also things aren't so bad, the family house is on the same block)

*. Not really sure about that yet but she might be a good singer. She probably sang in a church choir with her sisters as a kid. Probably a passion she neglected while growing up cause it "wasn't serious".

*. She feels super self conscious about her voluptuous curves and that's one of the reasons why she avoids having sex generally.

*. Keisha feels bad about depriving her son of his father. And also for not telling Tony he actually has a son. She knows Tony would step up and take responsibility for that, he's a great guy and she knows it. The problem is that he's a great guy who turned out wrong.

*. She's a righteous person, no doubt about it. But her morals don't necessarily align with the law, and she wouldn't hesitate to do something illegal in a heartbeat if she felt it was the right thing to do. De facto, she didn't hesitate to stand against the Nocenti clan after the death of her brother, offering to launder money for them to pay for Joaquin's debts.

*. No one knows about the business she's got going on with the Nocentis. She keeps the secret buried deep down cause she knows she's walking on thin ice and seeing her son everyday reminds her that she's got a lot to lose.

Mary, Marry Me: Movie Critique

Mary marry me is a romantic comedy film in one of the Metro Manila Film Festival 2018 2018 directed by RC Delos Reyes that Reyes puts up the tandem of Gonzaga sisters in a feel-good family film. The movie brings a lot of fun, love, and sisterly rivalry—bound to touch the hearts of families. The film brings real-life sisters Toni and Alex Gonzaga in their first movie together. Romantic comedy film is a movie that deals with love focusing on a lighthearted and in a humorous ways on the development of a romantic relationship.

The movie entitled ‘Mary, Marry Me’ is all about family and sisterhood. It tells the story of Mary Jane (Toni Gonzaga), and her younger sister Mary Anne (Alex) who is set to marry the former’s ex-boyfriend of Mary Jane, Pete (Sam Milby). Despite the initial unwillingness, Mary Jane’s commitment to make up to her sister has enabled her to set aside her discomfort with her ex-boyfriend as she agrees to plan their wedding. With all set for the wedding, Mary Jane has to face everything in spite of her own hesitations, while facing her own issues with her sister.

The movie really showed how Alex and Toni is somehow some scene are based on real life. Their dialogue is like an actual dialogue. It shows how they treat each other. The way they talk and their activities are the same in real life. Sam Milby completes the movie. It was nice when putting Sam Milby because it adds some kilig moments. Sam Milby and Toni Gonzaga brings the chemistry of their past loveteam.

In the movie Mary Marry Me, there are also elements that are displeasing just like its cinematography. Some scene has a bad cinematography. Some scene are not suitable for young adults. Some of their actions are not suitable for young viewers because it can destroy the innocent mind of the viewers. There are also scenes and dialogue that are not realistic.

Despite its displeasing elements it also has its appealing factors. Some of the elements of a romantic comedy film is present in the movie. Some of these are the happy ending factor. All the characters in the movie has a happy ending. The movie creates an unforgettable, relatable, likable character. It gives an all-around to supplement laughter to the audience. Most of all it has a life lesson to be apply after watching the movie. The movie is not just about the laughs, it is also filled with lesson about family, love, and forgiveness. You will leave the movie theater filled with realizations that at the end of the day, a family’s love can withstand everything.

The overall feel of the movie is pleasing to the senses. Its engaging mix of humor and drama makes it easy to take while concentrating on the values of family. It is emotionally heartfelt through and through. It touches the heart of the Filipino family and it would make you fall in love with yours more. Romantic movies are a result of the writer's imagination that brings out the creativity and beautiful memories that we can keep and we will keep on believing in the power of love, truth, and trust.

Local movies are very interesting to watch with. We should appreciate more local films to promote and encourage the development of nationality. Also, to give them morale to make even better productions. So, we should support local productions and popularize our country. For every movie, you can be filled with lesson.

I was not born into luxury. As a child, I have been through a lot of hard work because my parents have no permanent job and their pay is sometimes not enough to meet our needs. Sometimes I help them with their work to lessen their stress from work. We are five siblings in particular. All of us are studying and sometimes the money that my parents earned is not enough to sustain our living. Sometimes we even borrow from the neighborhood just for us to have something to eat. We also don't have a permanent home. Sometimes we even relocate place to places until we reached the house of my grandfather, the father of my father. We have suffered a lot when we stayed with our relatives. But as we lived there they treated us differently when our parents left us because they were looking for a living. We are not treated properly just like when they eat delicious food they will not give us they even hiding it from us. We are also the one cleaning their house. That is why we have some hatred towards their family. When our parents know we have moved into my grandma's house, the mother of my mother.

As we moved to my grandmother’s house they don't have wealth but they accept us and treated us fairly. In there we have been able to build a small house that is suitable for the seven of us. That’s where we lived and grow up. But as we grow up there is still time that we are not able to eat properly because we don’t have much money. So, my parents searched for different sidelines to add to our daily income because their earnings are enough for our daily needs. As I grow up and see our status I always keep in mind to study hard to help them and to make them proud despite our situation. I always thought that someday we will rise from our current situation. When I reached grade 3, my two older siblings both went to college together and thankfully we are blessed because my father was able to go abroad and be able to send some money to provide for our daily needs and education. At that time it is really hard to sustain for our education because they don’t have a permanent job and their salary is not that enough and all of us are studying, my two older sibling will enter college and the other will proceed in high school and I am still in elementary that is why we are so blessed that my father were given an opportunity to work in abroad. But his life there was not easy because he had an accident there and he was not able to send some money, so we also worked hard here. Thankfully, we were again blessed for the hailing of my father and because we were able to buy some land that we can invest on.

But living a luxury life did not last. Like other families, we also have a fight that leads to physical fight and sometimes some of them run away from home. When my father came got from abroad, our savings were depleted because we thought my two older sibling can be able to graduate in college but because of some mistake in school work they cannot be able to graduate on time and the remaining three of us are still studying so we are forced to sell our house and land which is built to an easy access area and moved to our land not far from the placed we used to live in. In there my mother was the one who supported our family because my father cannot go back abroad because they had finished their work there and he could not be accepted in any more work here because of his age.

When there are problem at the work of my mother they decided to sell some fish and because we don’t have much money we borrow some money for my generous uncle to start a business and thankfully they lend us. Thank God many buy some fish on us and we can bring home enough money to sustain our daily needs. Thankfully, we don’t have to worry about money, food and a house to live. Sometimes my aunts are jealous of what we have got. It was because of God's mercy that the fish has bring enough money in our family and my two older siblings were able to graduate in college. Because of the hard work and perseverance of my parents and a blessing from God, we have life that we don’t anymore have to worry about money, food, and house unlike of what we used to. To repay to their hard work, I will do good for my study for their hard work will not be wasted.

Poverty is not a barrier to live an average life. Be persistent and work hard to raise yourself and you will not fall into poverty forever. There is no one to be blame that we have live a miserable life and we are poor. It is our decision whether we want to rise from poverty or continue to fall into poverty. It is up to us to decide what to do with our lives. We should not let anyone dictate what we can reach and we should not only go with the flow of life on where it can lead us. As they say “kung may tiyaga may nilaga.” But if you are very hardworking you will have more to gain in life.
