Character ask: Maria (West Side Story)
Tagged by anonymous
Favorite thing about them: The fact that like her inspiration, Shakespeare's Juliet, she's not just a stock ingenue. Yes, she's innocent and romantic, but as Arthur Laurents wrote, she's also "excited" and "enthusiastic," and despite her youth she has "the temper, stubborn strength, and awareness of a woman." She's intelligent, lively, and playful, she makes a surprising number of demands on the people around her (however sweetly), and in the final scene, where she avoids Juliet's fate and becomes Prince Escalus instead, her anger shames two violent street gangs into mute remorse. As a character written by three men in 1957, she could so easily have been a flat ingenue, but instead they made her a dimensional character who's easy to like.
Least favorite thing about them: In the original stage version and 1961 film, the non-emphasized fact that she's willing to abandon her parents by eloping with Tony, on the same night as their son's death no less. Now, I don't judge her too harshly for this: it's a desperate, impulsive decision, and her parents seem to be fairly absentee, since they never even appear onstage/onscreen and mostly let Bernardo control her life. Still, I suspect this is a main reason why the 2021 film has her and Bernardo be orphans instead.
Three things I have in common with them:
*I like to wear red.
*I dislike conflict and bloodshed.
*I like to dance.
Three things I don't have in common with them:
*I'm not from Puerto Rico.
*Physically, I'm not "delicate boned."
*I don't have a brother.
Favorite line: Her famous angry "gun speech" after Tony's death.
brOTP: Anita and (when he's not being controlling) Bernardo.
OTP: Tony.
nOTP: Bernardo or Chino.
Random headcanon: She's pregnant with Tony's child in the end. This doesn't come only from me: there are several fanfics out there that revolve around the idea. Of course her life won't be easy as a young single mother of a mixed race child, but she's strong enough to face it, and the baby will be a symbol of hope and a source of purpose and healing, both for her and for the other characters too.
Unpopular opinion: I don't mind the fact that she so quickly forgives Tony for killing her brother, or that she sleeps with him directly after forgiving him. No one ever criticizes Juliet for so quickly forgiving Romeo for killing Tybalt or for sleeping with him that same night, and I think the difference between "brother" and "cousin" can be overstated: Tybalt has no parents in sight and apparently lives with his aunt and uncle, so he's arguably Juliet's brother in all but name. The entire message of West Side Story is against hate and in favor of love and forgiveness – the idea that it's wrong for Maria to forgive Tony goes against the main theme. As for their consummating their love directly afterwards... well, they're both impulsive teenagers, and they're in a desperate situation where they know that this meeting might be their last. I don't blame them for seizing the moment!
Song I associate with them:
"I Feel Pretty"

Waiting for Godot - Broadway - November 24, 2013 (Opening Night) (Lanelle's master) FORMAT:  MP4 (HD) CAST: Aidan Gemme (The Boy), Billy Crudup (Lucky), Ian McKellen (Estragon), Patrick Stewart (Vladimir), Shuler Hensley (Pozzo)
War Horse - West End - February 27, 2014 (Pro-Shot's master) FORMAT:  MKV (HD) CAST: Sion Daniel Young (Albert Narracott), Josie Walker (Rose Narracott), Alistair Brammer (Billy Narracott), Alex Avery (Captain Nicholls), Steve North (Ted Narracott), Tom Hodgkins (Arthur Narracott) NOTES: Multi-cam pro-shot broadcast live to cinemas as part of National Theatre Live, Includes interval interview and documentary.
War Paint - Broadway - March 11, 2017 (Preview) (SunsetBlvd79's master) FORMAT:  MP4 (SD) CAST: Patti LuPone (Helena Rubinstein), Christine Ebersole (Elizabeth Arden), John Dossett (Tommy Lewis), Douglas Sills (Harry Fleming) NOTES: Beautiful HD capture of the Broadway transfer. Some changes for Broadway from the previous Goodman Theater production. Excellent performances from the entire cast with clear picture and great sound throughout; very good video. 2 DVDs. A War Paint - Broadway - April 29, 2017 (Matinee) (NYCG8R's master) FORMAT:  VOB (with smalls) (SD) CAST: Patti LuPone (Helena Rubinstein), Christine Ebersole (Elizabeth Arden), John Dossett (Tommy Lewis), Douglas Sills (Harry Fleming) NOTES: The master gets caught during Face to Face. You can hear someone say “TURN IT OFF”. Blackout during that part. Wasted - Southwark Playhouse - 2018 (Pro-Shot's master) FORMAT:  MP4 (HD) CAST: Matthew Jacobs Morgan (Branwell Brontë), Molly Lynch (Anne Brontë), Natasha Barnes (Charlotte Brontë), Siobhan Athwal (Emily Brontë) We Are The Tigers - Off-Broadway - March, 2019 (StarCuffedJeans's master) FORMAT:  MP4 (HD) CAST: Lauren Zakrin (Riley Williams), Wonu Ogunfowora (Cairo), Jenny Rose Baker (Kate Dalton), MiMi Scardulla (Reese), Kaitlyn Frank (Annleigh), Cathy Ang (Mattie Wheeler), Celeste Rose (Chess), Zoe Jensen (Farrah), Sydney Parra (Eva Sanchez), Louis Griffin (Clark) NOTES: Starts at the beginning of "I Just Wanna" and missing part of "Mattie's Lament." The theater was really full tonight so there are a good number of heads in this video, but they are worked around to the best of my ability. This is a super small theater (less than 160 seats) and at times the cast members were definitely singing to the camera and honestly giving their best performances because of it. All of the things on the upper level (the bathroom, the pathway, and the kitchen) are captured perfectly, and the zooms on the lower level (the living room and bench) look good as well. Obviously because this is a murder mystery kind of show the lighting can get a little bit dark, but my camera handles low lighting incredibly well. This is honestly the best video you could expect from this venue We Will Rock You - Germany (Cologne) - August, 2005 (Pro-Shot's master) FORMAT:  VOB (with smalls) (SD) CAST: Alex Melcher (Galileo), Vera Bolten (Scaramouche), Brigitte Oelke (Killer Queen), Martin Berger (Khashoggi), Michaela Kovarikova (Meat/Oz), DMJ (Brit/J.B.), James Sbano (Pop/Buddy/Bap), Harald Tauber (Teacher), Willemijn Verkaik NOTES: Multicam proshot We Will Rock You - Utrecht (The Netherlands) - October, 2010 FORMAT:  VOB (with smalls) (SD) CAST: John Vooijs (Galileo), Marjolein Teepen (Scaramouche), Pia Douwes (Killer Queen), Paul Donkers (Khashoggi), Floortje Smit (Meat/Oz), Ruud van Overdijk (Brit/J.B.), Rutger le Poole (Pop/Buddy/Bap) NOTES: Good capture. Heads in the way, but also a lot of good close-ups. Dubble DVD! We Will Rock You - West End - February 11, 2003 (Pro-Shot's master) FORMAT:  VOB (with smalls) (SD) CAST: Tony Vincent (Galileo), Hannah Jane Fox (Scaramouche), Sharon D Clarke (Killer Queen), Alexander Hanson (Khashoggi), Kerry Ellis (Meat/Oz), Nigel Clauzner (Brit/J.B.), Nigel Planer (Pop/Buddy/Bap) The Wedding Singer - Broadway - April 1, 2006 (Preview) FORMAT:  VOB (with smalls) (SD) CAST: Stephen Lynch (Robbie Hart), Laura Benanti (Julia), Matthew Saldivar (Sammy), Kevin Cahoon (George), Rita Gardner (Rosie), Amy Spanger (Holly), Richard H Blake (Glen), Felicia Finley (Linda) NOTES: Includes pictures of outside of the theatre and playbill. The Wedding Singer - Off-West End - March 1, 2020 (Matinee) (Closing Night) (Highlights) (queenofthedead's master) FORMAT:  VOB (with smalls) (SD) CAST: Kevin Clifton (Robbie Hart), Rhiannon Chesterman (Julia), Ashley Emmerson (Sammy), Andrew Carthy (George), Sandra Dickinson (Rosie), Tara Verloop (Holly), Jonny Fines (Glen), Erin Bell (Linda), Lori Haley Fox (Angie), Andy Brady (David Fonda), Nathan Ryles (Harold Fonda), Jordan Crouch (Donnie), Aimee Moore (Tiffany), Simon Anthony (Shane McDonough), Paris Green (Donatella), Vanessa Grace Lee (Donatella’s Mother), Morgan Jackson (Mookie), Ellie Seaton (Crystal) NOTES: 38 minutes of act 1 of the closing performance, unobstructed. Well filmed from the balcony. Mostly a full stage shot. Some generational loss. Wenn Rosenblätter Fallen - Oberhausen - June 13, 2016 (Rumpel's master) FORMAT:  VOB (with smalls) (SD) CAST: Pia Douwes (Rose), Anton Zetterholm (Till), Annemieke van Dam (Iris)
West Side Story - Hollywood Bowl - July 19, 2016 (SJ Bernly's master) FORMAT:  VOB (with smalls) (SD) CAST: Jeremy Jordan (Tony), Solea Pfeiffer (Maria), Karen Olivo (Anita), Matthew James Thomas (Riff), George Akram (Bernardo), Drew Foster (Action), Jose Moreno Brooks (Chino), Anthony C Chatmon II (A-Rab), Kyle Selig (Baby John), Mike Schwitter (Big Deal), Jeff Smith (Diesel), Kevin Chamberlin (Krupke), Jennifer Sanchez (Rosalia), Erica Dorfler (Consuela) NOTES: This concert version of the show is abridged with shortened scenes, simple costumes, and no sets or choreography, but Jeremy, Solea, and Karen are absolutely phenomenal with soaring vocals and emotional performances. Very well captured with no dropouts, no obstruction, and no washout. The stage is filmed directly most of the time; the screens are occasionally filmed, usually when the actors are not onstage. It’s filmed in 16:9, with a mix of wides, mediums, and close-ups. The sound is excellent. Includes curtain call and playbill scans. No dropouts and no obstruction. West Side Story - Second Broadway Revival - February 23, 2009 (Preview) (SunsetBlvd79's master) FORMAT:  VOB (no smalls) (SD) CAST: Matt Cavenaugh (Tony), Josefina Scaglione (Maria), Karen Olivo (Anita), Cody Green (Riff), George Akram (Bernardo), Curtis Holbrook (Action), Joey Haro (Chino), Kyle Coffman (A-Rab), Ryan Steele (Baby John), Tro Shaw (Anybodys), Steve Bassett (Lt. Schrank), Lee Sellars (Krupke), Greg Vinkler (Doc) NOTES: Stunning production of this revival. Josefina and Karen still steal the show. The cast was on fire and there was a lot of energy in the audience as it was the first performance on Broadway. There are some changes from the DC run, which work better. Whiplash - Power and Pain (1986) review
Great music is often hidden behind horrendous cover art. Nowhere is that more apparent than in “Power and Pain”, the first album by New Jersey thrash metal trio Whiplash, and the second album (that I’m aware of) to feature a screaming pink-skinned bald man on the cover, after "In The Court of the Crimson King”. In the early-to-mid 80′s, thrash metal saw a flood of groundbreaking debut releases, and despite its 1986 release date, Whiplash’s first offering sounds closer to the NWOBHM-laden proto-thrash of three or four years’ prior, combined with the punchy sound and rabid aggression of the more extreme branches of thrash that began to form later in the decade, similar to bands like Canada’s own Razor, and it’s this unique blend that makes it one of my favourite thrash albums of all time.
The three Tonys that comprise Whiplash’s lineup are equally important to this carefully balanced sound. Note that I said “Three Tonys”, by the way; In what is likely a mathematical anomaly that goes against all known laws of probability, every single band member here shares the same first name. Frontman Tony Portaro lays down some VERY impressive and varied guitar work, combining blistering Slayer-esque chugging and tremolo riffing with soaring, often double-tracked half-Maiden-half-Priest leads and melodies. His vocals are a lot more divisive for me, sort of a pukey, throaty bark that sounds like Mille Petrozza swallowed Tom Araya, and Araya is desperately trying to escape from Mille’s stomach because Paul Baloff is down there too and he’s pissed. This vocal style is an acquired taste that I’ve grown to like more upon repeated listens, and is the clearest sign of this album’s year of release, showing a then-recently developed vocal style alongside more traditional instrumental work of the past five-odd years.
Bassist Tony Bono is a little more understated, laying down some decidedly Steve Harris basslines that support Portaro’s guitars well. He occasionally gets lost in the fury of the chaotic riffing, shouting, and drumming going on around his smoother, cleaner bass, but he makes himself known with a few inventive fills when Portaro is taking the occasional break from lighting his guitar on fire with the sheer speed of his playing. Drummer Tony Scaglione is a very entertaining listen, utilizing a high-energy, fill-happy style that unequivocally reminds me of Dave Lombardo (which makes perfect sense, as Scaglione did fill in for Lombardo on Slayer’s “Reign in Blood” tour). Scaglione’s main difference from Lombardo is that his double bass work is a lot weaker, but this is hardly an issue when he supports it with “Seasons in the Abyss”-ish tom breaks and “Show No Mercy” inspired ride beats.
Songwriting is straightforward, but surprisingly diverse for a thrash album. You won’t find any acoustic breaks here, of course, but you will find most styles of metal that existed up to 1986 within this record. This album contains pretty much no filler or wasted tracks; as far as highlights go, “Red Bomb” opens with mid-paced chugging before turning into a speeding monster and launching into a blatantly Priest-inspired solo, “Last Man Alive” is a foot-stomping number with a fantastic crunchy groove to it, and “Power Thrashing Death” is the record’s obligatory “we think that thrash metal is cool” number that speeds by at a million miles per hour. Closer “Nailed to the Cross” strikes me as an odd choice to close the album over something like “Red Bomb” or “Last Man Alive”, but it contains a really catchy chorus where Portaro strains to reach higher up in his limited range and still makes it sound great, as well as an admittedly hilarious trashcan ending with copious nonsensical shouting (”AUGH! AUGH! AUGH! AUGH AUGH AUGH AUGHAUGHAUGHAUANANANANA UUUUUOOOOOOORGH!” etc). Lyrically, it’s...well, it’s mid-80′s thrash metal, so basically just a lot of violence, war, and speeches about metal being the best. The lyrics are also littered with bizarre nonsensical word-salad that makes zero sense grammatically, instead only offering vague ideas of what they’re talking about, which I’d understand from a foreign band but it’s pretty bizarre coming from three New Jersians. The album is strong enough musically for lyrics not to matter too terribly much, and even if it wasn’t, Portaro’s voice is too incomprehensible, so this could be on the same level lyrically as some early Ramones songs and it still wouldn’t negate the quality of the music.
I can’t complain much, for once, on the production front. Perhaps there’s a tad too little focus on the bass at times, but for the most part the dry, crunch-filled tone of this record works perfectly for the type of rampaging speed metal played here. This gives “Power and Pain” a surging, red-hot atmosphere, basically the polar opposite of the cold, grim production found in something like black metal or...well, just black metal, honestly. Portaro and Scaglione both sound monstrous on their respective instruments, and although Bono doesn’t quite measure up in terms of raw power, he doesn’t need to, as his smooth bass work fits the album far better than a meaty Venom/Motörhead bulldozer bass tone would.
Whiplash are not the most popular, most innovative, or most impressive thrash group to hit the scene in the 80′s, but they are damn good at what they do, which is 100% all-natural speed metal with no added preservatives or artificial flavours, barring whatever food colouring they put on the bald guy’s skin to make him turn pink. This is strongly recommended for anyone into thrash metal in general, from Anthrax to Exodus to Dark Angel, as anyone with any interest in the sub-genre likely to find at least three or four tracks here that appeal to their tastes. Pick up “Power and Pain”, allow the Tony triplets to assault your ears, and keep the record hidden in a drawer somewhere out of shame over owning something with that cover art

#FredyMetalShow https://www.instagram.com/p/CDArou4FPgR/?igshid=1k7b9j7sh1g0h

Project Brief- Typography part 2
University of Cumbria BA(Hons) Graphic Design/Illustration Year 1 Module: GRAP4070 Communicating Ideas
Project 4 Letter Exchange
“A typographic hierarchy expresses an organisational system for content, emphasising some data and diminishing others. A hierarchy helps readers scan a text, knowing where to enter and exit and how to pick and choose among its offerings. Each level of the hierarchy should be signalled by one or more cues,
applied consistently aross a body of text.” Ellen Lupton, Thinking with Type
Brief
This brief is about extending the typographic knowledge and skills you started to look at two weeks ago into a larger piece of design using more information. You will be creating a typographic image and then combining this with a body of information which needs to be organised using a hier- archical system. You are tasked with producing a poster for a conference on creative typography called Letter Exchange.
Required elements
Your poster must contain: • an image/illustration made from type/lettering, which captures the idea of typography as an exciting, creative, experiemental endeavour • the full text about the conference (see document Letter Exchange Copyon Blackboard) • the poster must be A2 in size • you may use full colour • you cannot include any other kind of images
The brief divides into two parts:
1 The typographic image
We want to see lots of exploration and experimental play here, to develop an engaging and exciting typographic image which makes the audience regard typography as a creative artform and the conference as an inspi- rational event they would like to participate in. This can be made through any medium. Consider analogue materials and processes as well as digital methods: paints, inks, stencils, playing with the scanner and photocopier, projection, cutting, tearing, folding, sticking, collage, monoprinting, mixed media...If you can imagine doing it, then try doing it. This should be FUN! The only criteria is that it should be made from letterforms (which don’t necessarily have to spell anything). There will be studio workshop sessions to help you to develop your image and you may use any of the workshops for which you have had an induction eg. printmaking, metal, photography, wood etc. But don’t spend longer than the first week doing this.
2 The layout and typographic treatment of the information
Once you have your typographic image/illustration you need to turn your attention to the composition and typographic treatment of the information. How are you going to successfully compose the image and text content together? Remember that the overall layout must be well structured
and lead your reader’s eye through the information. As in your previous project, there are headlines, sub-heads, intros, main body text etc. There should be an evident typographic hierarchy to distinguish these levels of content. How do you use the elements within the type family to do this? (size/weight/u&lc/italics and other variants etc.) We want to see lots of control and attention to detail here. Initial layouts and compositions need to be considered as thumbnail sketches on paper before you start working on screen.
There are no restrictions on the number of typefaces, weights or colours you can use, but be discriminating about how many variants you really need. Is working within one type family, or a limited number of typefaces, going to produce a more coherent piece of design than throwing every- thing at it?
Assessment Criteria
1 IDENTIFY – Demonstrate an understanding of the need to identify appropriate research/source material in order to progress ideas/ concepts. 2 STRATEGIES – Select approaches and strategies that communicateideas and intentions to others in an effective manner. 3 SEQUENTIAL – Understand how to visualise ideas/concepts sequentially and selectively in order to arrive at creative solutions. 4 SORT – Identify an evaluative ability in shifting/sorting/testing/examin- ing in order to further develop ideas and concepts. 5 APPROPRIATE – Demonstrate the appropriateness of a design solu- tion to the demands of a set brief.

I have been a fan of Whiplash (aka The Three Tony’s: Portaro, Bono, Scaglione) since their "Thunderstruck" demo, which I acquired as a tape trader and college radio DJ back in 1984. The band were already signed to Roadrunner Records when I joined the label in December 1987, and their killer second album “Ticket To Mayhem” had been released that past October.
My initial job was College Radio Promotion and since “Ticket To Mayhem” was still new, I turned my attention to figuring out how to give it the leg up at college radio. In literally the first thing I ever did at Roadrunner, I decided to bring the band to the office and schedule a couple of days of radio station phoners. That was a pretty standard thing to do back then so I needed an angle to make it fun and get the DJs to engage. I came up with the idea to print up the ticket seen on the cheesy 3D front cover and send it out to my mailing list. I wish I had a photo of the back of the ticket, but it basically told the DJs that they were holding their ticket to interview the band and to call me to schedule a phoner on one of those two days.
What do I recall about the two days? All 3 guys came (including Scaglione’s replacement, drummer Joe Cangelosi) and hysterically every time they would be asked to record an ID for one of the stations they would end it by screaming "Swallow the slaughter!!!" into the phone. That was from Potaro's second line on the album (via the crushing opener “Walk The Plank.”). It’s clearly an expression they loved as they would later use it as a song title on 2009’s "Unborn Again" album.
I still have one of these tickets somewhere but as it would take hours to find so I have included two pics from online. You know who else has one? Joe Cangelosi. One of these pics is from him. The bands will always tell you the label did nothing etc… but the proof exists, ha ha.
R.I.P. Tony Bono.

The Sacramento Music Archive has just uploaded a (mostly) full Slayer show recorded at the El Dorado Saloon on November 5, 1986. So about a month out from the release of Reign in Blood and potentially without drummer Dave Lombardo, who left the band in late 1986. Lombardo was filled in for briefly by Whiplash drummer Tony Scaglione. Here’s what The Sacramento Music Archive’s Shayne…
