Of all the episodes of Star Trek Strange New Worlds that can explain why Spock is cold towards Chapel with her advances during TOS, it's in the musical episode where we got the answer, and yeah, it works.

what did you think of 2x09?
if this is how they explain spock x chapel dynamic in tos, it won't be compelling at all 😕 in fact, it would feel like lazy and rushed writing, imo. did they spend whole 2 seasons developing spock x christine just to abruptly abandon it?
but i still have hope since we know christine and spock interact in 2x10, so maybe it's not going where it seems to be going or at least maybe there is much more to expect from their relationship other than copy-paste version of tos!spapel?
also, if they write off chapel from s3, i will be seriously pissed, she is one of the best characters of snw!
anon, i share all your thoughts 100%
i felt it was contrived, a way to make spock's song work (instead of giving him a song about something else) and the way christine acted towards spock was incredibly out of character.
christine who argued with an alien species, who faced her feelings to save him, is not the type to hurt him by doing something as dumb as not telling him about the fellowship.
having spock see the korby message, walk in on her celebration (SHE HAD TIME TO TELL SAM??? SAM????????????? ) was just...
yeah. like, i think chapel is the best character of snw. i think its clear from my everything how much i love her. but today i had the same problems i felt in her the same problems i've had with pike's writing and i was very disappointed.

we have one week to stress about the finale so place your bets, people!
spapel break up for good and their tos dynamic is explained by the events of the musical episode (poor writing choice, imo. as it is neither believable nor compelling).
spock and christine get back together/continue pining for each other (less likely considering 2x09 but definitely preferable storytelling-wise).

[initial reactions] Star Trek: SNW 2x09 - Subspace Rhapsody
This was a fun musical episode! I still say Trek shows should be more than 10 episodes because there are some character beats here that feel it needs more than a few episodes to just be and breathe.
(Once again laughing that Paul Wesley managed to escape a musical in TVD only to leap headfirst into a show that would do a musical and he can't walk away. This is laughing in fun btw 'cause I do like Paul Wasilewski and his real-life snarky dry sense of humor, but also, HAHAHA. They got you, Wasilewski!)
I liked it! It wasn't Buffy the Musical, but that's okay, it was fun and it moved character arcs along!
I haven't mentioned before but I really love the medical uniform Chapel's wearing, which I think originated from Discovery s1 and 2.
I love how it took a while for Uhura to sing but when she did, she hit a breakthrough. I love that this was her episode but it wasn't just about Uhura.
The musical numbers I really enjoyed: Uhura's solo, La'an's solo, and Chapel's whole musical number. The three strongest singers of the show.
I'm glad that La'an was able to tell her secret because it was weighing on her so much and I'm glad that
Speaking of episodes where character beats needed more than 10 episodes. It's such a whiplash to go from Spock and T'Pol breaking up to Christine and Spock being together for what 2 episodes? I am glad we got Christine's song how this was something that can change her life forever. (If I'm not mistaken that guy running the program will be her ill-fated fiance). But we've gone from Christine pinint for Spock, to being ambivalent with him, to Boimler throwing cold water into the fledgling relationship with Spock. I wish we got to see Spock and Christine have just an episode or more to be in a relationship and happy.
There's not enough Pelia! (Speaking of, where are the other engineers? I know the answer is most likely covid restrictions but I wish there were some engineers working in Engineering in the background).
You know what? I've tried but I just had a thrill of happiness at all the moments Spock and Uhura were together. I know it's not as popular a ship as Spock/Kirk and Spock/Chapel but the TOS version I'm most familiar with (aside from the original TOS movies) is AOS. And since then Spock/Uhura is my ship. So, I'm just gonna embrace it. I ship them!
The Klingon boy band!
Uhura really is my favorite! I love how she started as someone uncertain of Starfleet to finding connection and family in the Enterprise even though she still felt alone at times. I love that Communications Officer is a vital part of ship's functions. Also, with the way Uhura is, it makes so much sense she makes Captain in the future. She has an air of someone who would be so good in Command.
Speaking of, I wish Discovery had these kind of fun episodes instead of one long story and I think this episode really highlighted the problem with the crew of Disco. Aside from 4 characters we really don't know the Disco crew as well as the SNW crew, I don't know what the Disco bridge crew's 'I want song'.
"I wan't" songs are, according to Playbill:
"The term is thought to have been coined by Lehman Engel, founder of the BMI Workshop for musical theatre composers, librettists, and lyricists. These songs are more than just inspiring musical numbers—in many cases, they launch the journey of a play, allowing the audience to get an inside look at force driving a character's action. They express a dissatisfaction or a dream of the character that propels them through the musical."
It's really sad that it seems season 5 is the season when the show regains their sense of fun. I hope the crew is written more of an ensemble in the final season. Disco is a good show, it just really needs to fix its ensemble writing.
Back to SNW, that was such a fun episode I'm also glad Una's taking her second chance to build more relationships and be more open with her crew. It makes sense.
BTW with all the Red in security and the Gold in Command... it occurred to me that SNW Enterprise crew probably thought Mariner and Boimler were Ops!
Anyway, that's a good episode! Good penultimate episode!

fandom: star trek (snw & tos & movies)
pairing: jim kirk/his first officers, jim kirk/his daddy issues, (specifically kirk/ofc, kirk/carol, kirk/la'an, kirk/spock)
rating: first officers with benefits
summary: He always had a problem with sleeping with people under his command.
That’s what he always said when asked about it.
(It's not his fault you can read that sentence in two different ways.)
tagged: sleeping with your first officer, Unsafe Sex, Breeding Kink, Friends With Benefits, first officer with benefits, chain of command, having a type, links SNW and TOS and the movies, Movie: Star Trek III: The Search for Spock (1984), Daddy Issues, (spocks canonical death in wrath of khan is mentioned but he gets better), (this is why it is tagged chose not to use archive warnings)
---
The 'Jim Kirk Sleeps With All His First Officers And Its Fine Actually' story is complete!!!
I have a literal timeline for this fic, and I still think I've messed it up somehow, but what does it matter? blorbo fucks, that is what is important. anyway this is sort of the other la'an/kirk fic I wanted to write post 2x03 and 2x09, and I did so by picking up the hint in 1x10 that in the other timeline where Pike doesn't resign, La'an goes to be XO of the Farragut under Captain Kirk. In this, she still does, but only because Kirk becomes Acting Captain about 9 months after becoming XO, and poaches her.
anyway I still have too many star trek feelings, and now I need to go work on the subspace rhapsody fic. enjoy!!!

[tv review] tos 2x08-2x14 (1967)
Tumblr media
no dessert until you eat your play-doh.
2x08 “i, mudd”
this is absolutely a much better mudd episode than “mudd’s women,” but mudd episodes are just… not great episodes? i’m glad that they was so much better in discovery, and i’m sure his episodes will be great in strange new worlds if he ever shows up there as well. which is funny because i actually like the way he’s portrayed in tos a lot better than the way he’s portrayed in discovery? like, conniving con man who gets under the captain’s skin is way more star trekky to me than just… “straight-up a murderer.” but the episodes around him in tos are just… ugh.
i loved all the silly stuff kirk & co did to try to confuse the androids, though. definitely the highlight of either of tos’s mudd episodes. c-rank
2x09 “metamorphosis”
i don’t have a lot to say about this one? it’s just… kinda boring and lonely. cool that they introduced zefram cochrane for later shows (even enterprise) to do a much better job with, i guess. d-rank
2x10 “journey to babel”
this would be a landmark episode if only for introducing spock’s parents and two founding members of the federation (the andorians and tellerites). but it’s also got some of the most plentiful and in-your-face play-doh food of the series, an absolutely bonkers star trek fight, a murder investigation, dr. mccoy doing bullshit star trek medicine, a space battle… there’s kind of a lot going on in this episode! it really is one i always look forward to. i really think this kind of stuff is tos at its best. a-rank
2x11 “friday’s child”
… and this is tos at its worst. seriously, this is so boring. it’s just 45 minutes of nothing! and oh yeah, my abusive ex “ironically” loved mccoy slapping that one lady across the face and then her following him around all doe-eyed for the rest of the episode. so, you know. not exactly an association it’s easy to get out of my head, and not a pleasant one in the first place.
i’m not just docking it because of that, though. it was already extremely bad all on its own. d-rank
2x12 “the deadly years”
the best part of this episode is when they reuse footage from “balance of terror” to make it look like the enterprise is under attack by the romulans. c-rank
2x13 “obsession”
hey. hey. what if we did “the man trap” again, but like, kinda worse? like, not bad bad, but just kinda… ever so slightly worse? and added a whole thing where the monster of the week was just super in captain kirk’s head. and he takes it out on some poor hapless security guy. wouldn’t that be fun!!
… would it not? where are you going? c-rank
2x14 “wolf in the fold”
yeah, okay, it’s bad, but it’s still a star trek murder mystery, so it’s at least watchable!! seriously, though, jack the ripper is a disembodied psychic force of evil? and he sounds like that? go fuck yourself lmao. c-rank

SNW 2x09
Man the more I think about it, the more awesome the musical is. Status report is such a perfect song, and it embodies Trek in musical form so well. The technobabble, all the different stations reporting in. Perfect. Also "I'm Ready" and "Im The Ex" being opposites to one another? Bruh. My one complaint is there should have been more genres. They pulled off boy band well with the Klingons, I'd have loved to see other aliens do other genres. Maybe K-Pop Cardassians? Techno Thollians? Jazz Ferengi? I'd love if they did the musical again, but it might be hard to do it a second time. Perhaps it could be done like in TNG where they did that TOS episode of everyone being drunk again and specifically mentioned "hmm, this happened before on..." except this time make it actually good. Could be a fun episode of Star Trek Legacy?

Rating Star Trek TOS costumes because why not! (part 7)
Tumblr media
I, Mudd (2x08). The vibes in Mudd's outfit are all over the place - it's pirate meets military meets used cars salesman. You know this man wears waaay too much cologne. 5/10, the belt should at least match the boots.
I'm way more into the androids' outfits. I love an asymmetrical shoulder and they've got that "one pant leg" thing going on that TOS was so fond of. I also adore their hair and their glittery tights! The chains look a little randomly placed, though, and those ugly ass necklaces sadly drag the whole fits down. 7/10.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Metamorphosis (2x09). Super cute! The whole outfit is very mod, maybe a little bit cheap looking but still stylish. The colors could match better but I love the cut of both the coat and the mini dress, and the headscarf and short gloves are just the perfect cherry on top. 8/10.
Tumblr media
Journey to Babel (2x10). They did Amanda so dirty, introducing her in this ugly, shapeless coat. You can't tell from this screenshot but the collar looks like a cone of shame from certain angles. The dress underneath looks fine but we don't see too much of it. Sarek's outfit is boring but at least it's dignified. 5/10 for them both.
Tumblr media
Sarek changes his outfit once (not counting his sickbay gown, which I don't), and it kind of looks like the same suit with a different decoration slapped on top. I do like this better, there's more of that dramatic flare we've come to expect from Vulcan fashion. 7/10.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Amanda's two other outfits this episode are a marked improvement. The first is a cute cocktail hour number, simple but colorful. 7/10. The second is my favorite; a pink wide-legged jumpsuit layered with a red knitted poncho with a pink fur trim. I'm a sucker for a red and pink color combo, and the fur trim is just the right amount of tacky for me. Amanda knocked it out of the park with this one, 9/10.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then there's the various alien delegates we see this episode, which I'm lumping together because I don't have a whole lot to say. You can tell they had fun coming up with the aesthetics for the different alien races, though one group was clearly an afterthought. The rest of the aliens get prosthetics and bodypaint and then there's two regular dudes in cloaks. At least they're colorful? 7/10 for the whole lot of them, this is some delightful worldbuilding.
