The Outer Worlds: Ramirez Tartarus
Thanks to a combination of a root canal and sangria I may be on my way to making the worst post you have ever read.
ENDGAME SPOILERS
Phineas going off about the Board is the kind of thing that really highlights that this is an Obsidian game (wonderful dialogue like this is why I enjoyed this game so much). And aside from his reasons for his specific word choice (which was not needed for Martian Colonist turned rogue Captain Ramirez as he is an adept hacker), there is such a brutal honesty about how he describes the Corporations that I can’t help but love it.
Tumblr media
Thank you, Phineas. 🙂
Tumblr media
Let’s be honest: if Inquisition could let you go off on the Chantry like Phineas goes here, it would be such a better game.
Phineas is so damn good that I wish he existed across multiple games.
Tumblr media
“What the hell” indeed.
Tumblr media
There is certainly something to be said for how the UDL is a science fiction organization (and potentially an antagonist depending on how you play) but it feels very much like a contemporary one.
Tumblr media
She does not fuck around. 😁
While it is never explicitly explained, I like to think Parvati is how she knew about this prison break.
Tumblr media
Junlei Tennyson, heroic lesbian leader who refuses to bend knee to the Board.
Tumblr media
Commandant Sanita remembered Ramirez as the ‘bounty hunter’.
Tumblr media
Sublight - not quite on the level of Oblivion’s Dark Brotherhood questline (which was a lot of fun), but given how doing ‘the right thing’ doesn’t really amount to anything it does feel like you are meant to give in to the zany (Sam is surprisingly approving of the task at hand, and I started to realize that Sam might be a lot more cognizant than I initially gave him credit for).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ramirez is, indeed, the greatest Vice President that Sublight has ever had. And he is apparently their favorite one. 🙂
Tumblr media Tumblr media
An honor? 😁
Tumblr media
Ramirez and the Prison Break Crew near closer to Phineas.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
You all know Rockwell sealed his fate at this point.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Max and Ramirez feel the same way about Rockwell.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Max having Ramirez’s back is a nice touch.
Tumblr media
Let’s be honest: we all knew the moment Rockwell said shit about Parvati that he was never going to survive this encounter. He went the way of Legate Lanius with my Courier (and yes, Lanius and the two Legion soldiers to each side of him were all turned into ash via the Holorifle).

Ramirez’s journey in Halcyon
Another interview with the developers for The Outer Worlds revealed that the DLC storyline would become available after the critical choice we make on Monarch. I’m curious to see if that means the choices that we made earlier in the story will have some impact (particularly the choice that we make when we are involved with Sublight).
Games afford an interesting opportunity that other types of entertainment often don’t. The opportunity to create a Latino protagonist to venture through the ruins of the apocalypse or the inhabited planes of Halcyon is something that greatly appeals to me about RPGs. There are some minor and significant choices that allow you to shape who you are as a person; in TOW, Javier provided Esther Blaine with the anthrocillin, which is the first example of an arguably tough choice where the dichotomy isn’t black and white (as Martin Abernathy isn’t a bad person, but you are faced with making a potentially life and death decision), but your decision will have consequences for others.
Holding onto his identity was also something that Ramirez elected to do - he wasn’t interested in assuming the guise of Alex Hawthorne. His name and his identity is one of the last vestiges that he has from his old life. Surrendering that for a much more “typical” name was not something that he wanted to do, even if it would make things easier.

Adelaide’s vision for the Botanical Labs is one that resonates with Javier Ramirez, where she wants to establish a society where food is provided for everyone and in stark opposition to the corporate and capitalist lifestyle of Edgewater, where life is valued by how productive you are and how much profit you provide to your corporate overlords.
While my characters are distinct from one another, one of the similar traits that embody my protagonists is intellect. My Lone Wanderer, L. Rivas, and my Courier, M., are two distinct Latinos, with the former being a somewhat naive Vault dweller who isn’t consumed by revenge and is willing to let Autumn go, and the latter is a weary progeny of one of the New Khans who grew up in the wastes and is hunting Benny Gecko down in a fiery wave of vengeance; both characters possess a high intellect. When speaking with Weston Lesko, Rivas is able to figure out there is another component when it comes to the creation of the giant fire ants, while M. is able to discern that Robert House’s longevity is typically only available to (Mariposa) Super Mutants and (sapient) ghouls. Javier follows a similar vein, being able to connect the dots to discern what Adelaide has been doing to create a sustainable economy for the society of the Botanical Labs while no one else in Halcyon has been able to grow anything in the alien soil suitable for human consumption.
Tumblr media
There is something appealing about being able to connect the dots in a way that few others can. With Gorgon having a noir vibe and a mystery that the player is meant to solve, perhaps Ramirez will be put to the test.
At the Emerald Vale, when all was said and done, the Captain chose to help the Botanical Labs instead of Edgewater.
Tumblr media
This is something that still holds true for Javier - a society established to create an anti-corporate norm, with a garden that belongs to everyone, is better than a corporate society under the whim of a Corporation that dehumanizes people and treats suicide as a loss for the Corporation.
Even slight reforms would not be sufficient enough to Ramirez to justify destroying the dreams of the Deserters and a society with tremendous promise so that Spacer’s Choice could continue to profit through the exploitation of the workers who were being worked to death.
As the Edgewater Sign points out (if you help Edgewater), “Adelaide's deserters dreamed of an independent life without Board oversight. You taught them an important lesson: never dream.”
Tumblr media
Adelaide’s comments to Javier illustrate that he’s fairly unique among the people she has met, as he hasn’t been indoctrinated by the Corporations to value the productivity that they profit from over individuality and autonomy.
My thoughts about the Botanical Labs is further elaborated here.
Beyond the confines of Terra II, the eclectic crew of the Unreliable find their way to the Groundbreaker.
Tumblr media
Parvati’s penchant for endearing herself to people is remarkable, as Macredd moves from threatening to kill the crew one moment (avoided due to Felix’s timely presence as a part of Ramirez’s moiety crew) to offering thanks to Parvati the next.
Tumblr media
Captain Macredd’s life is spared despite accepting the bounty from Sanita, and finding out his “history” with her is unexpected.
Tumblr media
The Captain makes note of Felix’s willingness to be a free roaming agent of chaos.
Tumblr media
Javier would not mind encountering Cassandra again. She had the right idea about the Corporations and how they take advantage of the working class of Halcyon. Perhaps they could even be on the same side.
Tumblr media
Ramirez probably would let her keep a giant sprat.
Tumblr media
Parvati’s persistent excitement, wonder, and awe at the places explored in the Halcyon system.
