Prime Playthings: Child's Play Winners
~
Our winners this week are @bread-into-toast, @corporalotherbear, and @wildcardgamez!
@bread-into-toast — Barby Doll
To be completely honest, this placement is at least 30% because of the outstanding pun. Not to sell the rest of this card short, though! Weaponize is a delightfully creative mechanic, acting as both a mirror of the Crimson Vow disturb spirits and an extremely natural-feeling offshoot of reconfigure, with some very smart wording to ensure the whole thing plays like a dream. I do slightly worry about the equip cost (I assume, based on its place in the reminder text) being set to 2 potentially constraining design space, but being able to set the initial cost means you already have a degree of fine control over how hard it is to get this attached to something. While the effect barring weaponize isn't super exciting, it's serviceable enough as something good you'd like on an equipment as much as a creature. Plus, it works excellently with the overall flavor, making it a delightful all-around package.
@corporalotherbear — Commercialize
I'll freely admit that I did a cartoon spit take on reading the art description, so immediate points there. Does a petrified corpse count as its own monument? Eh, I digress. I'm always a sucker for when reanimation gets more creative than just plonking the creature back on field good as new, and within that niche this card solidly swings for the fences. In exchange for a restriction to legends and a potentially hefty size down, you get twice the effect of the legend of your choice. Or more, as you now have free reign to copy the copy as much as you want. It's the flavor that really gets to me, the sheer comedy of turning larger-than-life heroes of old into marketable figurines.
@wildcardgamez — Possessed Button Eyes
I was absolutely in love with all the delightful creatures this week, but suffice to say a lot of the noncreatures caught my eye. As a sort of bizarro-Equipment this card immediately has my attention, and insofar as I can tell it works like a charm. It's a bit like the cadre of artifact-animating auras, but trading granted indestructibility and/or prodigious size in order to evoke traditional equipment's biggest strength. Namely, re-usability. The ability to turn a stray token or an artifact that's quite interested in going to the graveyard into a credible threat at a moment's notice is pretty strong, especially at instant speed (is that intentional, by the way?) unlike more traditional equipment. Plus, I love the twist on the flavor here, using the tropes and trappings of the haunted doll but decidedly declawing it into more of a Pinocchio affair. The doll's animated with horrible dark magic...to be your best buddy. Cute!

“A charming name that children would give. A for Alliteration. Big smiles, little life experience. Don’t quite know what a frown looks like. Or a tree. Or, well… grass. Dreams of magic portals. Haunted mansions. Pranks that’ll knock you clear to another planet! Smart kids. Real smart kids. Some shameful mistakes along the way, though. Immature, tasteless errors. [...] But they’ve been getting better and better…”

Child's Play
Tumblr media
A new creature type being introduced is always cause for celebration, methinks. A new niche to fill and a new direction to take design in! And while Duskmourn's release had a fair few more headlining debuts, I want to take a moment to highlight one in particular:
Design a Toy or Toy-related card.
To elaborate, that's a card that either has the creature type Toy (not necessarily because it's a creature; kindred is a potential option), or specifically mentions Toys somewhere in its rules text. Precisely how it mentions Toys is entirely up to you, but that's the clerical baseline.
I should also mention that as it exists currently, Toy is part of an unofficial category of "artifact creature types," namely creature types that are only seen on artifact creatures. That does stand as a bit of a restriction, but restrictions can often breed creativity, so I'm excited to see how you all tackle it.
As a final aside, Duskmourn's Toys (and Innistrad before it) have gone all-in on Toy as "haunted killer doll," but I want to stress that creature types have been reinvented and reinterpreted all throughout Magic's history, so don't be afraid to go in a completely different direction.
Stay safe, have fun. —@spooky-bard

Camping gone wrong 🏕️🐺
"Relax, man! Just ignore them and they'll leave." 😏
This is my entry to the Camping Photography Contest organized by @brickcentral.
I spent a long time thinking about the concept for the photo, but the only thing I was certain of was that I wanted to include this 4x4 off-road truck. While going through my minifigures, I came across a wolf figure, which sparked the idea of creating a scene where wolves disrupt the campers' plans.
I experimented with different setups, and in the end, I settled on this scene: one camper is completely relaxed, enjoying a marshmallow on the truck's roof, while the others are a bit more tense. There wasn’t enough space for all three on the roof, so one ended up in a tree.
Since I only have one wolf figure, I had to take multiple photos and composite them into a single image.

Playtime! Ingo always makes time to play with the kids, and if that means potentially taking a plush Larvesta to the face, then so be it. He loves them.
For anyone that doesn't know, Ingo and Johanna married here, Dawn is Ingo's stepdaughter, Rosie (pigtails) is their adopted daughter, and Percy (baby) is their son.

Toy Box Titans: Child's Play Runners Up
~
Our runners up this week are @deg99, @grornt, and @lanabutnotdelray!
@deg99 — Wind-Up Ironside
A wind-up toy is definitely a strong mechanical jumping-off point as far as concepts go, and I'm definitely pleased with how much this card commits to the idea. True to form, this takes a while to really get going, but the ability to funnel between some to all of your board into growing this trampling threat every turn is pretty scary. It's not even sorcery speed, so you're entirely free to hold up creatures and just have whoever's not doing anything else give it a quick wind as your turn rolls around. Removing a counter and therefore "winding down" to actually get to attack is a great bit of flavor that also makes it a neat (if possibly unintentional?) reference to the ancient series of Clockwork monsters.
@grornt — Rubber Recluse
This one's just cute, really. The concept of this silly rubber spider being so scary as to shock a creature into becoming smaller (or just dying on the spot) tickles me to the core. It's a nice, compact package of effects that I really find myself liking. It's very reminiscent of Fungal Infection, but being printed as a creature card automatically makes it more attractive for a lot of black strategies, even discounting the usefulness of reach on a flash blocker. As simple as it is, I could easily see this being a linchpin of a limited format, and that's pretty neato.
@lanabutnotdelray — Ruby Rider Rifleman
Plush immediately sticks out to me as an excellent twist on Prototype, trading the modular size and color for the ability to be placed on nonartifact creatures. Plus—although it's entirely possible it could get printed on an artifact creature—turning a nonartifact card into an artifact creature is a meaningful difference a lot of the time. This seems similar in concept—or possibly even inspired byHearthstone Miniaturize from their similar toy-themed set, although in mechanical practice there's few similarities. The card itself though, woof. That's a lot of extra damage flying around, and any way to increase this thing's power leads to huge returns. The fact that it applies to noncombat damage is bonkers as well. In fact, I think it's probably fair to have the card exclude itself, so it's not effectively doubling its own power in addition to whatever else it's doing. This is the kind of card that an opponent who knows what's coming will dread and an opponent seeing it for the first time will instantly make priority one. Scary!
~
That's a wrap! Thanks for joining me for this fun little adventure, and for joining us for yet another year! As before, I'll be in the discord for the rest of the day taking commentary requests (and just to be clear, address it through the fair-talk channel, please). See ya there, pals! —@spooky-bard
