Hi,

this is a topic that is often discussed. But it is actually so that many could not swim. Swimming was not a very popular pastime at that time and many of the sailors who were pressed came from rural areas that did not have time to learn how to swim. Bathing at that time also had nothing to do with swimming, bathing went to the point where the person could still stand and so even at sea, a sail was often left in the water as a small pool to allow the non-swimmers a little bathing fun. Only from the middle of the 19th where it went off with the trainingships was realized that swimming was an important part and it also served the sporting training. From then on it was taught specifically.
