Thanks so much rivet!! always happy to see u in my inbox!! :D
As for how I got into transformers!! @pinkanonwrites dragged me kicking and screaming into the robot fuck cave by FORCING ME asking me very politely and earnestly after like a month of pitching the comic to me to read MTMTE in november.

and then we watched TFA together, and then we watched earthspark together, and then we watched Cyberverse together, and we tried to watch TFP and hated it and the rest is history!!

And it begins, the EarthSpark toys are on clearance.
So far it’s just these size classes, but it’s not looking long for this toy line. None of it really moves super well. The store I was in moves the Tacticons a little better, but probably only because they’re so cheap.
Among the Deluxe line, Nightshade continues to shelfwarm, with the ROTB and Legacy toy lines still doing better by comparison.
If this changes for TFOne’s toy line later this year remains to be seen, as we still have no clear idea on what the movie is like or what the TFs look like. A candid shot of an Orion Pax popcorn bucket is the best we got, and most people are playfully making fun of how chunky it is like Energon Optimus Prime.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Art by staticoctopus on Twitter, it’s cute and fits very well with the topic, lol).
Meanwhile, Skybound’s still knocking it out of the park, and is garnering far more discussion and speculation that EarthSpark can ever hope to have.
It’s doing what Bob Budiansky had been making a point of from the start: you need Earth and humans to properly tell the stories of alien robots that turn into vehicles, just having them only on their own doesn’t work unless it’s Beast Wars or Beast Machines. Because you get WFC, Prime Wars, and Cyberverse when you strip Transformers of its humanity figuratively and literally.
It’s why EarthSpark is so weird, because it is trying so hard to make statements it has no qualifications to make, and pretty much treats most of its non Megatron, non-Mandroid and non Jawbreaker male characters like morons. Robbie practically dies and the show treats it somewhat as a joke, instead having Alex & Dot love up Mo while Robbie lays there probably thinking of the worst retirement homes he can shove his parents in to. The human X Transformer relations are still frankly terrible unless you’re a Malto. If modern writers despise the Chosen One story, they’re sure going all in on the Maltos as being chosen for a vague destiny, aren’t they?
Meanwhile, Skybound does this:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Telling a much better and heartfelt story about humans and Autobots coming together with future trials yet to come. There’s a reason people criticize the inept and some that shady EarthSpark Optimus (his only saving grace currently is being voiced by Alan Tudyk), but most universally praise Skybound Optimus as the return to form Transformers desperately, desperately needed.
On top of that, spoilers for context, Sparkplug sacrificed himself to save Optimus, by merging with the Matrix, revitalizing it. Now Optimus is guided by the human wisdom of a repentant Sparkplug, who previously was consumed by the horrors of the war he served in, the death of his wife & eldest son and his alcoholism used to drown it out.
Now Optimus is seeing what appears to be Sparkplug’s memories due to his influence of the Matrix.
Tumblr media
It’s led many to assume this is Optimus stepping into the role of father to Spike, mirroring Star Saber & Jan. I think that’s terrific idea, Optimus better understanding humans from the get go but now having Sparkplug as his Jaga to potentially guide him further.
It also seems to be a reverse Hi-Q from the Marvel comics.
Tumblr media
And that resulted in Hi-Q evolving into a new Optimus (mostly because of the Action Master toy at the time, but still.)
Tumblr media
This is what EarthSpark wants to be but refuses to do, it’s what IDW thought it was trying to be, but absolutely failed, and now we’re at TFONE.
Hasbro is now trying to properly advertise it with an animated logo on places like Instagram. The movie is set to come out this September if all goes well with the toys trickling out around that time (though toy distribution being what it is, probably January 2025 at this rate).
Like EarthSpark, One is stated to have “political” commentary and characters like Nightshade according to leaks and rumors. This I guarantee will kill this movie faster than EarthSpark if the story and characters aren’t up to snuff. Thankfully, audience test screenings have been very positive so far, but another problem we’ve all anticipated. Comments about the official logo now have people incredibly confused and hesitant to go near ONE because they don’t know if it’s Bayformers, Bee/ROTB, or something new, and being told it’s a new thing doesn’t seem to be helping…
Skybound remains the best thing Transformers has had in a long time. One has the potential, but I think its main “non politically driven” deterrent is it being another movie with vague ties to Bayformers and being a cartoon movie. (Some are actually angry it’s an animated movie and not a live action thing, it’s confusing…) There’s apparently plans to to make TMNT: The Last Ronin into an R movie under Paramount, as it too is the only good thing TMNT has going for it (besides Mutant Mayhem, but we’ll see how that goes for its TV show), so it’s entirely possible Hasbro may chose to do the same with the Energon Universe, as it’s the only thing period Transformers has going for it right now…

I’ve recently got into Transformers EarthSpark, it ‘s a really cute found family show that, while it seems though it was made for a younger audience, tackles some pretty heavy subject matter.
So after binge watching season 1, I went on my different socials to look at fan works. The fandom is great on Tumblr, however when I look on Twitter and especially YouTube I see shit like
Tumblr media Tumblr media
like
dude
1. Just because LGBTQ+ topics are in a kid show, doesn't mean it is indoctrinating your kid. You kid’s head isn't going to explode if they see two dudes kissing or a person who identifies as non-binary on screen.
As I was growing up, with the internet and the fact that my brother is a part of the LGBTQ+ community, I learned a lot about different gender identities and sexualities at a young age and I easily understood the fact that some people love other people who are the same gender and the fact that people feel more comfortable with certain pronouns because that makes them more comfortable in their own body. Also, some people want to change their body so they are even more comfortable. Then I learned later that some people feel attractions for multiple types of genders why some don't feel romantic or sexual attractions at all.
2. Imagine someone getting so dame pressed about a 3D animated robot from a cartoon series going by They/Them. Don't these people have anything better to do?
3. There have been gay transformers like Chromedome and Rewind and in one issue, Breakdown and Knockout are married (or whatever the cybertornian equivalent is). Not to mention, Anode and Lug who are not only trans (mtf male to female) but they are also lesbians! The fact that there are people spreading this kind of hate and claiming the mere inclusion of LGBTQ+ anything ruins a show is disappointing. The only time and I mean the only time it would ever be a problem is if it is dose to mock or is done in a stereotypical fashion, like why people were apprehensive about Q-Force. Also, if it is clearly done to market to the LBGBTQ+ community and not actually represent us, like when Disney announces “their first GAY character” for the hundredth millionth time and even then, it’s less of the inclusion and more of the execution. This example rings especially true sense their first real on screen appearance of a main character who is gay having a relationship arc and trying to confess to a guy is in a movie that Disney actively tried to repress and only released a few trailers right before the movie was released to theaters.
The fact that there are people complaining about a nonbinary character on a tv show while really trans people are getting their rights taken from them as it grows harder and harder for people to transition, especially trans youth, and that’s just the tip of the iceberg.
TLDR, angry basements dwellers are mad over a nonbinary 3D animated robot from a kids show.

Kit Harrison claiming he's "never heard" complaints about too many characters is something when Roberts admits in one of his Q&As that he was juggling too many.
On the point of how much Roberts in particular catered to a very specific fandom niche as well as the Q&As, I saw a criticism that the Q&As focused too much on shipping. They weren't wrong.
Like any other continuities, it has its strengths and its flaws. However, I would say the fandom does a terrible job at recognizing that and are getting to be on par with "geewunners".
I don't want to be too much of a curmudgeon here, so let me start by saying that IDW's run was not entirely bad writing, boring relationships, and sheer hatred from everyone involved towards all but that more insular fandom. Some of the dialogs could be clever, and the crossovers, more often than not, were a ton of fun. I'm still sad they could never figure out how to make Fortress Tiberius from their Star Trek crossover (Fortress Maximus with the original Enterprise as an alt-mode) an actual toy after it looked cool in the comic.
That being said, Harrison was definitely deflecting. It's easy to defend "too gay". The people complaining are just bigots! And you'd better believe that was a constant go-to during the IDW years, not helped by the fact that a minority of a minority of the criticism was bigoted in nature, and that was used to paint all the criticism as such. It's much harder to defend the cast being bloated beyond all belief and the focus on romance resulting in a muddled, uniteresting mess. At the same time, I'm glad to hear Roberts admitted that he was dealing with too many characters. I may utterly despise his writing, but I have nothing against the guy personally.
I think because the IDW fandom is so insular and dedicated since it was designed to be such, it is inevitably going to have a narrow view on what is acceptable and what is not. And they were upfront about it. "I want to focus on romance and if you don't like it, too bad." "I don't like this aspect of the franchise, and if you do, too bad." The thing is, like many a Gee-Wunner, there is no compromise. You can do something heavily inspired by G1 but still be its own thing. The Transformers Armada video game for PS2 openly cribs half its dialog from Transformers the Movie but is still considered a great (if difficult) game that uses the Armada designs and gimmicks effectively to create a fun game. The Energon Universe is essentially Ultimate Universe G1, in which it takes the core cartoon from 1984, adds in GI Joe, and mixes everything together with 40 years of hindsight and and a desire for smooth integration to make something that is vastly different from the original cartoon and comic, and is actually resonating with the audience. But being a purist like many of those IDW fans are, and like some of the more hardcore Gee-Wunners are, saying "Only this way of treating the material is acceptable, and if you disagree, you're either a manchild or a chud" is a recipie for failure. Isn't that right Earthspark?

I agree on wishing they hadn't brought the abusive dynamic to Earthspark because, while it's nuanced, this is a kids show. It's rated TV-Y7. "Abusers can change" is an incredibly complex and sensitive topic of discussion and I don't feel like this show has the capacity to handle that. Im not saying kids shows CANT address difficult subjects, but this particular one doesn't feel like it will be addressed well, and as a victim myself I'm almost scared to watch it play out.
Warning--criticism of the writing for ep. 21. If that's not your cup of tea, please skip. You are absolutely allowed to have loved that episode as many people did. I just think it could have been done differently, and that's my opinion. You don't have to read this or like this if you disagree with that.
Yes! And let me just say I think it's something that's definitely always needed to be brought up in a serious manner, especially where Starscream is able to seriously process what he's been through and have it addressed. But on a kids show, split over two seasons?
I think that's irresponsible. Because what is the message being communicated to seven year olds? Especially kids that liked Megatron but might be dealing with abuse in their own households.
And I second your belief that kids shows can portray it. There's been kids shows that have handled abuse, I mean even with bullying they've portrayed bullies as sympathetic characters who've got a shit ton going on at home, but they didn't really do that?
I just don't understand the point of spanning something so sensitive over two seasons. Maybe if Megatron wasn't the main character who's nuance and redemption has made him seem like a 'safe' person, than I could understand. But he is, and the rode that's been chosen with him is that he's a good person trying to do better. And while I don't think he attacked Starscream due to regression or out of malice (It was most likely his fear for Hashtag), it happened. He learned from it, and offered Starscream space and grace at the end, but there was such little attention given to it that many people gloss over it, at least for Megatron.
You're left with a bad taste in your mouth over a character who's supposed to be a good person because the writing didn't flesh it out, at all. And yes, he has slip ups. But again, think of the audience. Think of what little we're left with. They should have dedicated way more time to Starscream and Megatron's storyline.
And even then, what's the message for Starscream? It's okay to kick women if you've been abused because you're not in control of your actions? You don't have to apologize for it, that's just comic relief? You can hurt innocent humans and that's not your fault because bad things happened to you?
That pissed me off lol.
Had they allowed more time for dialogue, an actual apology from Megatron acknowledging what he did, but also insight into his own character and actions, I would have appreciated that. If it fleshed out the implications for Megatron going forward, I would have appreciated that. If it had some refelctions that let the audience know, "Oh he's still changing, and just because he did this doesn't mean he's bad" i would have liked that.
I think the same should have been done to Starscream. As opposed to all of the other Decepticons that escaped, they painted him as the most sympathetic, when in reality he's most likely one of the most dangerous. That's what freaked out Megatron. And I feel like that was a huge cop out, because it glosses over the redemption he actually needs to go through.
The message has always been bad people do bad things, but can be good in ES. I feel like that was a missed opportunity to expand on that for both Megatron and Starscream.
Also, you're totally valid in how you feel. I felt the same way. like i'm not upset with it, but I think it should have been done much better with more care and grace to both the characters and the audience.

Sounding off about that Q&A- For ya i'm gunna ask about
''Sweet Rims'' & ''Stay away from this!''
Personally for the first one, i'm obsessed with the look of Hummer H2s after watching TFA Swindle onscreen, and now every time ones onscreen I point out 'HUMMER!!!' at a loud volume. If only the gas in-take wasn't so high, then I'd think of properly owning one eventually. (still am)
For the second,I don't think I've got a answer- so I'll take your word on that one. I hope i'm not too late with this!
Sweet Rims: This is not a practical vehicle to answer with, but since every time I see a cement truck in real life I go “omg his wide load…” I simply gotta say Mixmaster. I’ll drive around in a neon green and purple cement truck for the bit. I’ll commit to it if I somehow become in possession of a cement truck. Alternatively…Hot Rod from G1. I’ll drive around in a flashy car with flames. It would be cool.
Stay Away From This!: I’ve only watched like four TF shows. G1, some of Transformers Animated, some of Cyberverse, and Earthspark so far. I have a really hard time sitting still and watching stuff. And out of the four, Earthspark is the one that isn’t wowing me yet.

Before Earthspark comes out you think you can rank every Transformers cartoon/show you've seen?
subjective, starting from personal favorite:
beast wars
beast wars ii
armada & cybertron (share a place)
animated
the transformers/g1
victory
beast machines (guilty pleasure)
robots in disguise 2001
headmasters & masterforce (share a place)
rescue bots
cyberverse
prime
energon
war for cybertron trilogy (individually ranked: kingdom would be first; siege and earthrise share the same place)
prime wars trilogy (pepeLaugh OH NO NO NO)
i do not consider anything but the prime wars trilogy and siege/earthrise genuinely bad. whether or not these shows are "objectively good" isn't what i rank them off of; i believe animated is objectively better than armada and cybertron, but i enjoyed the latter two more.
shows i haven't finished, but where they're ranked currently:
q-transformers
beast wars neo
rescue bots academy
i haven't given zone a good watch. i watched it once but was barely awake so i want to rewatch it again before i rank it.
shows i haven't finished, and will most likely not finish:
transformers go!, robots in disguise 2015, and cyber missions.
i don't really remember anything about the movies, and that's mostly because i just can't watch movies.
