Japanese G1 continuity is absolutely not normal about girls but damned if they don't give us some of the best ones
There was a significant amount of Transformers continuity released between 1987 and around 2007 that was produced in Japanese and is really only known to most English-speaking fans through fansubs, dubs that were only released in Australia, and the like. Shows like Headmasters, Victory, and Zone. Manga like Victory and 15 Go Go Go Teletraan (which was really mostly Kiss Players). Radio shows like Kiss Players.
I'm gonna be super up front. Japanese G1 is not normal about femmes in any way, shape or form. At the same time, it gave us some of the BEST and most underused female characters in the Transformers universe.
Headmasters, which came out right after the US G1 show ended, is particularly egregious. In Headmasters, Arcee has been reduced to Fort Max's administrative assistant, uses ridiculously polite and subservient language, and is also the only medic. And being a medic would be kind of badass if they let her be as badass as Ratchet, you know? But they absolutely do not.
Also, in Headmasters, Carly (now married to Spike) allows her son--a freaking child, not even a teenager--to go on missions when Spike can't and a human is needed, because uh, for some reason it's better for a 12 year old boy to go, not an adult woman?
But most of the good femmes don't come from Headmasters. And some of the best femmes we have are from Japanese G1.
Super-God Masterforce made it up to us by giving gave us Minerva, a human girl who is a Headmaster with a robot body (transtector) making her basically a bad ass mecha pilot, and who actively does fight.
The Victory manga gives us Esmeral, Deathsaurus' incredibly classy wife, and Lyzack, Leozack's twin sister, who is in charge of defending the homefront but really does want to go out and fight. Illumina appears in both the Victory manga and the anime. She's a little human girl who has a crush on Jan Minakaze and is always trying to get people to choose nonviolence.
(Lyzack later appears in an English-language comic - the Wings Universe--wherein she's basically Deathsaurus' servant and Starscream hits on her. I don't like that.)
There are a number of great femmes who were only ever toys. The Cobalt Sentries set gave us Howlback, leader of the Decepticon military police (called the Cobalt Sentries). She is basically Ravage's twin sister but instead of being super stealthy she can turn your attacks right back on you.
(Later she appears in several English language comics and in at least one she is canonically trans. I'm not a fan of her depiction in the SG Recordicons Batman tribute arc, though.)
The Unite Warriors toyline - Takara's response to Combiner Wars, basically - gave us the combiner Megatronia, made up of Megaempress, and her four guards, Lunaclub (sometimes called Luna Clover or Luna Trefle), Flowspade, Moonheart, and Trickdiamond. They are incredibly awesome.
(IDW 2019 used Trickdiamond, but none of the others. Tricky was one of Swindle's contacts.)
Then there's the elephant in the room that everyone pretends isn't there...Kiss Players.
So, okay. There is nothing normal about Kiss Players whatsoever. On the other hand, I'd rather listen to KP than watch RID2015 which is just blatant copaganda from hell.
Kiss Players had an interesting plot involving little bits of Galvatron and Unicron getting into humans and creating the Kiss Players--humans who could give TFs a powerup by kissing them and then merging with their internals somehow. Then there are the Legions, the dick-tongued monsters that everyone who hasn't actually listend to the show or read the manga thinks are Megatron.
The dick-tongued monsters are gross. It is also gross that some of the Kiss Players are barely teenagers and definitely not adults and are constantly ending up in Situations.
But the plot centres around the apparent rise of Convoy, or Optimus, from the dead, and his transformation into a weird groomery dude, which many people don't understand there was an actual reason for, because it's not Optimus, it's someone else riding around in his body.
Melissa Faireborn is like if you chopped Marissa Faireborn's IQ in half, dyed her hair blond and threw out any pants or skirts that covered her knees. She is nothing like Marissa and I treat them as cousins, but Xiaoxiao Li is amazing and her real lover.
Anyhow, this female scientist (Dr Amaou) lost her mind over the loss of her daughter during the events of the 1986 movie et sequelae, and she's got to be stopped from turning Atari and her Autorooper robot pal into a permanent fusion to reincarnate her daughter Shizuku (whom for some reason I always want to call Setsuna instead).
It's a little confusing because most of the really good parts of the plot got jammed into a few episodes near the end of the season, although once you know what it is, it's clear that it's being set up. That artist just likes borderline lolicon way too much.
The second season of KP is very squeaky clean and sends the girls out to collect what they think are Allspark fragments, and they are very annoyed because Ravage, whom they call "black panther man" keeps getting in their way and fucking with them, only to later find out that the bots who gave them this task are Unicronian heralds and Ravage is trying to stop them from helping Unicron do what Unicron does.
Rosanna, everyone's favourite robot pop idol, comes from the second season of KP, although you don't see very much of her or her companions Glit and Sundor.
Incidentally KP sets up the Unicron Trilogy and some of its characters end up in the UT--which did come to the US, and gave us Alexis Thi Dang.
(This post is brought to you because I just wrote an Esmeral thing and someone was musing separately about Megaempress as a parent and I almost ended up writing this post while reblogging them, because I'm a nerd with a hyperfixation).

When it comes to Transformers its one of the few medias where I pretty much am okay with every ship in some capacity and don't hate any character Except ONE fragger who I WILL NOT elaborate on from such a niche piece of media that just uttering his name or thinking about him gets me so fired up. And he had the AUDACITY to go through a form change and become hot

An extremely messy observation i wrote at midnight
Kiss players and mach girl follows a similar concept: girly spinoff of a classic property geared towards boys with fanservice. They even have a blonde MC who wears pink! Except Mach Girl executes the concept in a genuinely entertaining way that doesn't risk landing you on a watchlist. And booooy after watching all twenty-six shorts I have a LOT to say about how Mach Girl succeeds where Kiss Players fail.
Despite Lip-chan's suggestive design she is never put in sexually demeaning scenarios. She isn't harassed, in fact she beats up a potential bully in one episode. She has an entertaining personality, and while there is fanservice it's done tastefully and not lolicon bait 🙃
Both Lip-chan and the human MCs in Kiss Players are adults with cute designs. However Lip is treated as the grown woman she is; she has fun sure but she's also confident and competent. She clearly knows what she's doing and mostly handles the situation herself, though she does have an ally. The Kiss Players are infantilized to the point they come off like little kids. They need the transformers to bail them out. They come off as crybabies than legitimate heroes. Such a wonderful message for women!
Mach Girl's Artstyle is a feast for the eyes, and the simple plot is entertaining, if confusing. Take away the gross moments in Kiss Players, the plot reveals itself to be a forgettable boring mess and the one legitimately cool concept completely useless.

YOU AND WHAT ARMY?
For April's Patreon-backed @tfwiki update, it's "generic" army-builders! And I mean toys that are very specifically marketed as generics, not named individuals who also happen to have the body of mass-produced mooks!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The G1 Insecticons could produce vast swarms of identical clones. In 2004, Takara released an e-HOBBY set of "Insectron Clones", SALVO, SHOTHOLE and ZAPMAP, but in the toys' original Diaclone decos.
Tumblr media
Takara's Legends line gave us a generic SWEEP Headmaster, with a jaunty flipped-up moustache, for use with the Legends Scourge toy. It came packed with fellow army-buiilder Sharktron (aka Sharkticon).
Tumblr media
The SONIC ATTACK JET from Beast Machines was the first Hasbro toy to be specifically marketed as a generic; the bio card even lacked a motto! (This wasn't the first Transformer toy in history to be marketed as a generic, that goes to Takara's Masterforce Seacons in 1998.)
Tumblr media
Kiss Players introduced the AUTOROOPER, one of 48 human-made machines that fused with their human drivers via kiss (just... let's move on). The set came with a sticker sheet that let you mark it as any one of the 48 units, plus a Kremzeek mini-figurine, and we all know how those things multiply!
Tumblr media
Silver variants of the Vehicons from the Prime TV show got toys in Japan, though the GROUND VEHICON GENERAL ended up coming out in the post-Prime sequel series Adventure (aka Robots in Disguise).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Speaking of Prime spinoffs, the Jaki from Go! are created from random bits of Earth tech via some form of funky Predacon Oni magic. The brainless BARARA, BURARA, DORARA, GARARA and JURARA monsters can combine into the mighty GORADORA!
If you like these pics and enjoy these little themed dives into Transformers toy tistory -er, history... then maybe pop on over to my Patreon? You can get even bigger updates happening and even pick a theme for the month!

What parallels can we draw from the Transformers Kiss Players to the current modern strife found within the masculine identity?
I think the identity of any man interested in Transformers Kiss Players is "Jeffery Epstein"
Keep that cursed fuckery out of my inbox.

hello vector prime I have a question what happened with the autobots X in transformer g1
Dear Mind Merger,
I think you may have already seen the end of the story of Autobot X, in the pages of Generations Selects. In order to humiliate and defeat the Quintessons, an aged and dying Spike Witwicky transferred his mind into a new body composed of multiple Neo Autobot City components: Neo Autobot X. But I suppose you wouldn’t know the chain of events that lead to this rebirth. I shall tell them to you now.
Sparkplug Witwicky had never feared death. While obviously an untimely death was something to be avoided, he was a practical man, and accepted that human beings got only one chance at living. Even as he and his son became embroiled in the Great War, he put his faith in the Autobots, many of whom he considered kindred spirits, like-minded tool and die men like Ratchet and Wheeljack. On one occasion, even knowing the associated risks, he trusted the Autobots with the very life of his son, Spike’s mind being transferred into the failed Autobot X prototype. After that terrifying episode ended, the prototype was stored away, and life went on.
Sparkplug grew old, and watched with pride as his son grew as well. The Autobots came to Spike and Carly’s wedding, Bumblebee bringing along the Peruvian villager Luisa and her brother’s convertible as his date. They came to the birth of Sparkplug’s grandson, Bumblebee in awe as a tiny hand pawed at his smallest finger.
Would they be there at Spike’s funeral as well?
The thought made Sparkplug shiver. Was his son’s time with his closest friends destined to be a mere blink in the eye for the Autobots? Why should Bumblebee be left behind as Spike moves on?
Thoughts raced in Sparkplug’s mind. The Autobots and the EDC had used data from the original mind transfer experiment on a number of projects over the decades. Binaltech, the Eldedroids, even the Kiss Players… Autobot X’s DNA lay in all of them. There had been other advances too, old technology rediscovered as heroic young men and women used the power of the Masterforce to transform, culminating in a borderline miraculous copy-pasting of personalities when their transtectors became true Transformer life-forms.
Using his connections and seniority among the Autobot’s human allies, Sparkplug began what became known as Project Neo: the development of inert Transformer bodies to be used as full-body prosthetics in the event of catastrophic harm or death. Unfortunately, Sparkplug wouldn’t live to see its completion, dying in 2040 shortly after the founding of the new Cybertron Alliance.
Only when humanity began its stellar adolescence as the age of Angolmois and the Selectors arose did the project bear fruit. Using the full processing power of the Mother Computer at Neo Autobot City allowed for a safe and secure mind transfer. Sparkplug had informed Spike of the project near his death, and to his credit never forced the idea upon him. In truth, I see the value in such a technology if used for good and the protection of life, and like any parent Sparkplug wanted to give his child every possible option. That said, only under the threat of death did Spike undergo the transfer. Perhaps as he grew older and reliant on the slavery of the Selectors did he begin to feel some disconnect from the Cybertronians around him… For shame.
As humanity and the Selectors spread out among the stars following the abandonment of Earth, the common adoption of Neo Autobot X technology was but the first step in the multitude of evolutionary branches that would bloom from the humans. If nothing else, it brought the humans and their Selector partners closer together.
I cannot help but see my brothers and sisters in this story. Such great change, all stemming from the love of a father for his son. As humans become Transformers and vice versa, I believe we find the truest glimpse of Primus’ dream.
