#9 – 'Rice Pudding' (A Sun Came, 1998)

A bit of avant-garde, deeply unserious fun. In terms of legendary ‘bad Sufjan Stevens songs’, there are bigger fish to fry.

As versatile as Sufjan is – folk, chamber pop, synthpop, glitch, ambient, minimalism, even hip hop as idioms under his command – I always felt that he never really mastered the rock song. There are exceptions, of course, but they either are only rock songs in the softest, most anaemic sense of the word (‘Springfield’) or early-days anomalies that sound like nothing he has written since (‘A Winner Needs a Wand’, ‘The First Full Moon’.) Put an electric guitar in front of him and he seems to freeze up, more often than not defaulting to tongue-in-cheek, deeply atonal soloing. The rock song is Sufjan’s ticket to fuck around for a few minutes. The fact that ‘Rice Pudding’ is one of the more enjoyable Sufjan rock songs is probably more a testament to the overall calibre of the field, not the quality of ‘Rice Pudding’ itself.

It is quite possible, if one is really determined, to intellectualise a song like this. The piece of media it brings to mind for me is not music, but a film like Harmony Korine’s Gummo. Its characters, picking up the pieces of their shattered lives after a tornado rips through their small Ohio town, spend their days engaged in surreal and often violent activities: fistfights, drowning stray cats to sell to a local butcher, prowling the streets for underaged women, shaving their eyebrows. In the wake of immense tragedy, there is little room for art, in the privileged, liberal sense – they just act. Create, touch, build, destroy. I feel as if ‘Rice Pudding’ captures that same sense of junkyard-chic surrealism. There is no riff here, or key, or structure; the guitar plays melodies, but none of them make any sense. The drums randomly fall in and out of time, constantly changing feel, and then ceasing to exist altogether near the end. And Sufjan sings with an attempt at a snarl, which is worth listening to if only for the amusement that this man would later sing ‘Video Game’. This is music sans regard for artistic value, pure unbridled id – rather entertaining in a deep, guttural sense.

This subversive bent carries through to the lyrics, which are much the same brand of absurdity. This is, oddly enough, a love song of sorts. The key line – a quasi-refrain, though it feels strange to refer to it as such – is ‘I’ll feed you rice pudding at the benefit concert’. It is love to be sure, probably young love, without any regard for poesy. Like Big Star’s ‘Thirteen’ but not as good. Certain other lines in this two-verse, two-refrain song are even more bizarre – why will he ‘find you underneath the grass’ at the placement field? The mind immediately goes to necrophilia, but then you realise you are trying to deeply interpret a song called ‘Rice Pudding’, and you forego your efforts.

But you could really do much worse than this. ‘Rice Pudding’ does not take itself even remotely seriously, and on an album like A Sun Came, it justifies its place. Laugh at Sufjan! Let him dance for your entertainment!
