Richards "Yankee Candle ~ Snowglobe Wonderland Advent Calender" review. Day 7
Unmarked tealicht, sort of a night-sky blue/green. Initial thought: smells like newyear? like the early morning on the 31st when theres already a bit of fireworks that have been lit off and the scent thereof coats everything, but not enough to set off breathing problems yet. Giving it a second more im definitly getting something pine/spruce/needley tree in there. theres a sharpness to it that reaches to the back of the throat, like mint but not (goshdarn it i wish i knew how to communicate scents better). After a minute the 31-dec scent passes away into the needle forest entirely, maybe the sharp back-of-mouth burny scent is some kind of musk? What does "musk" even smell like? (insert "burning electric vehicle/child slavemines" joke here) Wait is it amber/resin/treejuice? Is that what the sharp back of mouth scent is? I dont know what it is, its certainly wintery because of the needletrees but by god this candle is if anything too sharp. Not saying im not considering a full size candle of this, but if i do i might light it for 10 minutes and then set a timer to extinguish. I think if i let a candle of this burn for an hour i would choke on the minty/pine. 7.5/10, smells like winter and i suspect you'll certainly get value for your money. half point has been detracted for the lack of "loungability" that i suspect a full sized version of this would have. This little december blog is really making me apreciate my olphactories.

"Momma, what kind of maple syrup is this?" "The real kind" "Oh. I like this better. Is the other kind fake?" "Yes." "Oh. I like the real kind, not the fake kind." Maple syrup connoisseur. Theory: Ungoliant is a regular spider and Melkor exaggerated her size to cover up his disproportionate response to seeing her
When you shriek so loudly they name a valley after your shrill, helpless wailing, you really can’t admit that, while the spider was hairy and gross and scuttled at you really fast, it was only an inch across. So it’s not really surprising that Ungoliant is supposedly perpetually wreathed in darkness and no one other than Melkor actually sees or interacts with her.
I’m not sure that even the balrogs that came to his rescue saw her, given the spider fled at their approach, and even if they did, they were definitely sworn to secrecy.
When Formenos was attacked, all anyone saw was a cloud of darkness that scared everyone into falling off their horses. (Although tbh I would not be surprised if the Feanorians did see her but were equally terrified of the larger than average but still totally normal spider, and also lied about there being “some huge evil: even as it passed it robbed us of all wit and will.”)
Certainly no one saw her at the mound thanks to her convenient 'unlight', and the actual damage to the trees is done when "Melkor sprang upon the mound; and with his black spear he smote each Tree to its core, wounded them deep, and their sap poured forth as it were their blood, and was spilled upon the ground." She just drinks the treejuice after.
Then, after supposedly eating the source of all light and assisting in the assassination of a king, Ungoliant just...wanders out of the story and goes south or eats herself or something ? idk about you but gigantic darkness-belching death spiders are not the kind of thing that I misplace. There is nothing worse than knowing there is a spider, looking away and looking back to find it’s gone but you know it’s still in the room with you but you can’t find it and then half an hour later you go to brush your hair and you look in the mirror and it’s on your face.
And that’s just regular spiders, never mind gigantic, darkness-vomiting death spiders. So obviously she wasn’t one.

DURIAN - How I pick the best ones: - Well if you really want a good Durian, then you have to do something for it. If you want the BEST DURIAN there is, don't let someone choose it for you, that will almost never give you the best results possible. And also avoid buying Durian in Styrofoam, they are never as fresh as the whole fruits and have often been rejected by other customers. This is how i choose my Durian: First i take a brief look at all the Durians. Most of the time, i have some favourites already at this state. Often they are brighter, more yellow than others. Then I observe it in detail, there are folloing questions: Are there any holes or damages (means bugs or worms), are there any seams that already are breaking up (which is good and means that the fruit is fully ripe), how does it smell like - there is a lot of information in the smell, like unripeness, overripness, alcoholic taste, sweetness, bitterness and overall taste - all can be observed by the smell already. Does it smell differently at the seams?, how big are the fruit segments, and how many are probably empty?, how about the from factor and what's the variety? (I know from the form of the fruit and the spikes and colour what direction the taste is going to be) - well there is a lot that playes a role. I know this is a long topic, i try to narrow it down a bit. 👉 That's what leads to success: First try to choose a beautiful one, that looks ripe, then smell it, is the odor strong and appealing and makes you want it? COMPARE the smells of different Durians! You get to know what a ripe D smells like. Then try to shake it, not to soft, you should be able to feel and even hear the segments shaking inside, this means: RIPE! Look if you find any cracking seams, that is also a good sign and means the fruit is ready to be consumed. Then try to find out how fresh it is, look at the stem, is it dry and broken, hard like wood? That's not what you want, you want the stem to be humid with treejuice still visible when scratching the top of the stem. The fresher, the better (there are exceptions, but it would fill pages to go through that 😉) If you have followed that few rules, you likly get a good one.
