The gift exercise / Invitation 4.1 : Skadang/Datong

2017, Performance /  Intervention / Work in progress Hosted by TreeTreeTree Person Residency, Taroko National Park/TW

Being hosted by a family of indigenous people belonging to the Taroko (or truku) tribe, Mayumi Arai and Nina Willimann found themselves confronted with the violent and complex colonial history of Taiwan and its aboriginal people - and the historical connections with their own cultural and national backgrounds. 

Between the occupation by different European Imperial powers and the contemporary Chinese annexation, Taiwan has undergone over 50 years of Japanese colonial rule. The Japanese were the first to enter in the remote territory of the Taroko people and left traces in architecture, education and in personal memories. In the same period presbyterian missionaries taught Christianity to Taroko people and translated the bible into Taroko language, using Roman letters.

Despite this historical connections between the Taroko people and the West /Japan, there is no common language. In order to exchange, Willimann/Arai therefore developed together with their host family a communication technique which is based on sketches in a Notebook, including drawings, Chinese characters and some Japanese and English words.

Through this subjective perspectives of the guest and their hosts, the Notebook maps their conversations, experiences as well as their common history and its continuities.

For the visitors, Mayumi Arai and Nina Willimann then created a map based on this raw material - as a testimony which traces their exchanges.

2017年、Willimann/Araiは台湾原住民族の１つ、花蓮県太魯閣国立公園内の村に昔から住む太魯閣族のホストからの話を通じて、台湾とその原住民族の暴力的で複雑な歴史を認識し、2人自身の文化圏や国籍背景との歴史的な繫がりに向き合いました。(※ このプロジェクトは、現在も進行中。)

植民地主義の歴史を通して、太魯閣族と��ーロッパ/日本と繫がりがあるにも関わらず、日本語を話す多くの人々は、亡くなっており、現在では両者を繋ぐ共通の口頭言語はほとんどありません。そこで2人は、ホストファミリーとともに、ノートブックにドローイング、漢字、わずかな日本語と英語の単語を用いたコミュニケーションの手法を発展させていきました。ゲストとホストの主観的な視点を通して、そのノートブックは彼らの会話や経験を証言し、そして彼らの共通の過去と現在をマッピングします。

その年のプロジェクトの締めくくりとして、レジデンスは太魯閣国立公園をハイキングツアーを開催しました。先住民族社会に普段あまり関わる機会が少ない都会に住む漢民族のアートに関心のある観客が主に訪れたこのプレゼンテーションの枠組みの中で、Willimann/Araiはツアーガイドとしてこの地図を配布しました。

The gift exercise / Invitation 3: Taipei

Invitation 3: Taipei is a reflection about the ambivalent meaning of hospitality on the ground of colonial heritage on a historical as well as on a personal level in their role as Western / Japanese artists. The hot towel called „Oshibori“ is one of the symbols of Japanese hospitality culture. It is served to the guest in order to clean his hands and face. In the damp heat before the arrival of typhoon Nesat, Willimann/Arai prepare in a ritualistic and sterile process 66 hot towels, using water from the nearby temple and gauze fabric, which is traditionally used for curing wounds. The Oshibori then are offered to the visitors and passers-by of the surrounding popular district in order to dry their sweat.

Invitation 3: Taipeiは、植民地時代の遺産を背景にアンビヴァレントな歓待の意味と、西欧/日本人のアーティストとしての役割についての考察を行なった作品です。

「おしぼり」と呼ばれるホットタオルは、日本のおもてなし文化の象徴の1つです。 通常、ゲストの手や顔をきれいにするために提供されます。台風の到着前の湿った暑さの中で、Willimann/Araiは儀式的に、近くの寺院からの水と創傷を治癒するために伝統的に使用されているガーゼを使用して、おしぼりを準備します。それらのおしぼりは、地元の人々や通行人、観光客に提供されました。

Willimann/Arai invited their Taroko host and teacher Nac Hijiyu and Taiwanese scriptwriter and translator Shang Chiao Li to contribute their personal perspectives on the territory of Taroko National park in the form of a text in their mothertongue, which Willimann/Arai interwove with their own perspectives. As an attempt to map their common history, this „kaleidoscope of gazes“ was presented as a collective, multilingual reading performance in the frame of the exhibition in TheCube Project Space, together with a collection of maps of the area of the National Park from European, Japanese, Chinese and Taiwanese perspectives. 

Willimann/Araiは、太魯閣族のホストNac Hijiyuと漢族系台湾人の脚本家・李尚喬と共に、太魯閣国立公園での経験を背景に、個人的な視点で「領域」に関して綴った文章を持ち寄り、コラージュを行い、それぞれの視線を織り交ぜた４つの異なる母国語で書かれた１つの文章を制作しました。

 彼らの共通の歴史をマッピングする試みとして、この「視線の万華鏡」は、ヨーロッパ諸国、中国、日本、台湾、アメリカで1724年から現在まで製作された太魯閣国立公園の地図のコレクションと共に、多言語のリーディング・パフォーマンス*として、提示されました。
