First
“Je regardais le fauteuil de maman et je pensais: “Je ne pourrai plus m’asseoir sur ses genoux.” Soudain l’avenir existait; il me changerait en une autre qui dirait moi et ne serait plus moi.”
“I looked at my mother’s chair and thought: “I’ll never again be able to sit on her knee.” Suddenly, the future came into existence; it would change me into another that would say ‘me’ but is not me.” [translation by me]
Simone de Beauvoir, Mémoires d’une jeune fille rangée [English title: Memoirs of a dutiful daughter]
As I write this, I am about halfway through Simone de Beauvoir’s Mémoires d’une jeune fille rangée, which details her childhood. I find myself relating to her in a lot of ways - both spending a lot of our childhood surrounded by adults, our voracious reading habits, and our insistent need to be around people, and her focus on change mirrors the crossroads I am faced with now - newly graduated and uncertain of what’s to come. If I look back, I can still see all the comforts of the structured, sheltered life of a student - the predetermined routine that I followed until it wasn’t there anymore. Instead, I now I feel myself teetering on the edge of adolescence and adulthood, between the me I can recognize, and the not-so-distant Other that looms on the other side of the door.
However, I don’t really have time to dwell in this uncertainty anymore. My flights are booked, and I’ll be taking off on Monday to spend about 10 days in France before moving on to another 5 weeks travelling surrounding countries. After spending my last school year immersed in the intersection of feminism and literature for my Honours thesis, I now have the opportunity (thanks to the Rooke travel prize) to trace the footsteps of some of the prolific women who inspired my work (including de Beauvoir). I’ll be using Charlotte Soulary’s La Guide de voyage: Paris [link: http://laguidedevoyage.com/en/produit/la-guide-de-voyage-paris/] as a guide for my time in Paris, and will be flying a bit more by the seat of my pants for the other two cities I’ll be visiting, Nice and Marseille. It will be an exploration in being alone - just as de Beauvoir experienced when she was sent to Marseille for a teaching job early in her career.
I’m finding it strange getting back in the habit of writing for others (please bear with me!), but I’m hoping to share the anticipation of these travels with you - the plans, the changes, the questions, and the uncertainties that loom over that Other, the one who feels simultaneously familiar and distant.

Second: Being alone in Paris
I arrived in Paris in the late morning, drifting in an almost trancelike state through the airport, the metro, and then the streets of Montmartre to find the hostel where I would be staying for the next three nights. Though I didn’t feel like it when I arrived, I pushed myself through my jet lagged haze to head out and take in the city. One thing stood between exploring the city and hiding in my bunk for the rest of the night - being alone. I assumed, traveling through youth hostels, that I would have the chance to meet someone the moment I entered my room, but there was an eerie silence through the hostel (it being the off-season for traveling of course). Nevertheless, I pushed myself to act like Simone, and not let my concerns stop me. In reading her memoir and some of her other writing, I envied her deep appreciation for independence and solitude, her wanting “to have friends, and have loneliness” (a short bit from one of her more prolific quotes). I spend much of my time at home surrounded by friends, plans every night of the week, anything to be surrounded by the subtle companionship that I’ve grown used to over the years (especially after living with roommates all through my years at Trent). To motivate me into leaving, I kept one of the things she’d said in her memoir in the back of my mind. Paraphrasing from her French, she said that while in Paris, she felt starved for human connection, and her solution, the best way to find the city’s true being, was to seek out its people. So – I set out into the streets, with no real plan in mind except to find the core of Paris that she spoke about. I eventually made my way up a long flight of stairs to the Sacré Coeur Basilica, with a view overlooking the city. Not really the best way to experience the true city (there were tourists everywhere!), I didn’t spend too long before moving on to sit in a café. I sat there a while, trying to appreciate the café culture I’d heard so much about before coming. I’m not sure that I fully understood it in that moment, as my tired mind latched onto the sweet taste of coffee (which was all too small compared to the bowl-sized mugs I was used to at home). It wasn’t until returning to Paris nearly a week later that I would really get it. Sitting on a terrasse for breakfast, I reveled in the chatter of the women beside me. They were a group of three, gathering at their small corner table one at a time. I ached for the quiet murmurs they shared, where you’re close enough to someone that you speak at a whisper without even noticing. By the time all three of them had arrived, I had been sitting for nearly an hour already, the waiters leaving me alone with my journal. I think they only checked in when they noticed I was out of coffee. It took a while for me to get my cheque (and I tried not to eavesdrop on the contents of what the women were discussing), but I eventually left to my main plans for the day – following in Simone’s footsteps through the streets of Paris. More to come in the next post 
