Featured MFA: Grace Boyd

Our first featured MFA in 2021 is 1st year MFA with a practice in ceramics and land based art: Grace Boyd!!!

Grace is a ceramics and land based artist living nomadically across Canada. She holds a BFA from the University of Manitoba. Her early life was untamed and mostly lived outdoors, the natural beauty that surrounded her shaped her identity and art practice, drawing her to handmade objects and how they are made. The places she has lived inspire her work and inform her constant need to connect; person, place, and object. She is ever seeking a natural place to rest which drives her to create the world in which she wishes to belong.

We asked Grace about her “studio”-work. Here is was she said:

With great curiosity, I am seeking to further understand the relationship between person, place and object through the medium of ceramics and land-based materials. I wish to build a world around myself of which I want to dwell and thrive.

Do you keep a special object in your studio?

My collections. Through my explorations of the wild places I have gathered and collected a great assortment of wild objects that I identify as my treasures. These object I award places of honor in my studio, arranging them with care and thought.

NSCAD - Year 1.

Going to NSCAD University has been life changing, completing the foundation year has taught me many things, such as:

Life is full of criticism and that is not a bad thing, you should embrace criticism, it helps you grow as a person. 

Always push yourself to do things that make yourself uncomfortable - art has no boundaries, try whatever you want.

Sometimes professors mean well but cannot communicate because of things like generation gaps - do not sweat it that much. 

Art is everywhere and in everything, its equally as important and special - do not let others make you think otherwise.

Its okay to cry, emotions are valid.

Everyone is just as exhausted as you, so be kind to others.

Open classrooms and small class sizes can be extremely beneficial, and as someone with anxiety its made me feel safe at university. 

Even if the work is not successful, try, and try again.

Never give up.

Featured MFA: Carrie Phillips Kieser

Our featured first year MFA of this week utilizes print, drawing and thread as media in her art practise: Carrie Phillips Kieser!

Carrie states about her practice: “My work concerns meditations of delicate and complex ecosystems with imagined or perceived boundaries such as ocean shorelines, wilderness areas and lake edges. I think about how these spaces are penetrated and how humankind has entangled ourselves.”

She has recently moved to Nova Scotia from Calgary Alberta where she was working as the executive director of Alberta Printmakers, a non-profit artist-run center dedicated to promoting print media. Within her personal artistic practice, she is concerned with issues around environment and nature, with healing and nurturing, and is interested in language, poetry, and semiotics. She explores these concepts through the media of print, drawing, and thread. Through pursuing her MFA at NSCAD, she is hoping to expand her artistic community, build on bridging print into public spaces, and find collaborative partnerships. In her spare time, she is exploring the waters by learning to sail with her two boys in a tiny 420 sailboat.

We visited Carrie in Fountain Campus, where she is working in  the Printmaking studios and her personal studio in N450!

And like all the others we ask her to tell us about your studio Practice!

Working in the realm of delicate ecosystems, my current work is focused on a particular area in Nova Scotia, the Blue Mountains Birch Cove Lakes Wilderness Area. This area, as with all wilderness areas and nature reserves are important places for their ecological complexity and contributions to the health of the planet. My print practice is a visual expression of the things I am learning from this specific place. Through the development of a series of repeat relief patterns, I am learning the gifts of healing through the native flora that grow here and trying to understand how these images can offer places/ spaces of meditation in other locations.  Within a series of copper plate etchings, I am diving into the rich, resilient world of epiphytes and trying to express this in the materiality of delicate gampi tissues and mulberry papers. Many of the etchings are still in the development stage but I am excited about some new possibilities and expressions that are coming out of them.

Do you keep a special object in your studio?

hmmmmm..many special objects, plants and lichens, small sticks and twigs, dried flowers, objects collected from my travels, art pieces from friends, a tea pot and mug and my books.

Good news from @primaryinfo — 'Michael Asher: Writings 1973–1983 on Works 1969–1979' is a New Release this week! ⁠ ⁠ Originally published in 1983, this volume, by Los Angeles artist Michael Asher (1943-2012) presents select documentation of 33 works through writings, photographs, architectural floor plans, exhibition announcements and other ephemera.⁠ ⁠ For most of his career, Asher did not create traditional art objects; instead, he altered the existing institutional apparatus through which art is presented, creating work that intervened in the architectural, social or economic systems that undergird how art is produced and experienced. For example, in 1974, he removed the partition wall dividing the office and gallery space of the Claire S. Copley Gallery in Los Angeles, revealing the day-to-day activities of the gallery to the public. In another work from 1979, Asher had a bronze replica of a late 18th-century sculpture of George Washington moved from the exterior of the Art Institute of Chicago to a museum gallery that housed 18th-century art, reintroducing the statue to its original period context and shifting its function from public monument to indoor sculpture.⁠ ⁠ Due to its site- and time-specific nature, Asher’s work generally ceased to exist after an exhibition, which makes this highly sought-after book an invaluable resource. As the artist states in the introduction: “This book as a finished product will have a material permanence that contradicts the actual impermanence of the art-work, yet paradoxically functions as a testimony to that impermanence of my production.”⁠ ⁠ Initiated by Kasper König, 'Writings 1973-1983 on Works 1969-1979' was originally copublished by the Press of @nscaduniversity and @moca LA and was largely shaped by Asher’s close collaboration with Benjamin H.D.
