MSR and workplace dynamics

One thing that can annoy me about particularly young people's interpretations of MSR in canon is that they run on this idea that there are only two types of workplace relationships— "boss" and "coworker of completely equal rank." This is not true. There is a whole gambit of degrees of authority people have over each other in a real workplace that MSR shippers ignore. More below the cut.

I used to be in a 2-person department no one at my large organization took seriously and the man who'd been in the role a few years longer than me, who I took direction from on almost every decision because our on-paper bosses were so absent, was if not my boss, an unofficial supervisor. When he left and I took on his role, I had an amount of authority over my replacements. I couldn't hire and fire people, but I decided what we did everyday and troubleshot 99% of the problems we encountered as a team.

That's the reality of Mulder and Scully in canon. He's not her boss, but he's not her equal in the organization. He is the head of the department. So when people complain that "he tells her what to do" they're just not understanding that that is the reality of their workplace dynamic. In addition, I see people complain about when he explains the case to her at the crime scene, when that's a clear television convention to explain to the audience what is happening.

Mulder is not Scully's boss, but he does have a lot of power over her at the FBI and I wish it was something shippers unpacked more rather than ignoring because it makes them uncomfortable. I personally think it was one of the reasons they didn't get together earlier. I think he knew he had power over her and didn't want to cross that line and make her feel uncomfortable. I see that explored very occasionally in fic and it's actually a reason for the slow burn that makes sense for once.

I still ship them despite this, but if I knew her IRL I would tell her not to date a man with so much power over her (and I would tell him to stop dating women who are mean to him like his parents were). But, it's fiction so it's just a fun fantasy and it's ok to ship something unhealthy in real life.
