Waiting for Sunghoon, you quickly set up the cameras for your behind the scenes vlog. You were excited to practice with him again, having had so much fun the last time. 

Through out the one month you’ve been MCs, you like to think you’ve gotten a lot closer. Especially after the day you practiced 7th sense together. 

It was so easy to be around Sunghoon, his naturally charming and slightly awkward personality matching yours perfectly. He always knew exactly what to say, whether he was reassuring you or cheering you up. The highlight of your weeks was when you went to MC with him, always having the time of your life with his silly jokes and witty improvisations. 

You’re reviewing the choreography for the dance as Sunghoon walks in, excitedly waving at you. You wave back to him, signalling him to come over to the camera. 

You both stand awkwardly in front of the camera, looking at each other before you burst out giggling. You take a deep breath, trying to calm yourself. 

It was all in vain, because when you make eye contact with him again, the both of you breaking out into peals of laughter. 

‘Today we’re gonna be practicing ‘woman on the beach’!!’ Your bright smile covers half the frame, your hands filling the rest as you excitedly continue to ramble about the stage. 

‘I might be excited, but I don’t think Sunghoon is…’ You tilt the camera to capture Sunghoon, who looks like he’s going through the entire range of human emotion in the span of 3 seconds. He sighs, whining as he comes closer to you. 

‘Why did they have to pick such a cute concept.’ He pouts unconsciously, frowning at the stage instructions in his hand. ‘I’m SO bad at cute concepts!’ 

‘Awww, no you aren’t! But… is this reminding you of Chamber 5? Another concept out of your comfort zone.’ You smirk as you tease him lightly, giggling at the way his ears go red. 

‘PLEASE! Don’t remind me of that torture!!!’ He shudders, trying to shake away the bad memories. 

‘Hmm I don’t think cute concepts should be that hard for you, considering you were the cutest in Hey Tayo!’ You continue to tease him, enjoying the way he squirms. 

‘Oh my god, come on, let’s just get to practicing, PLEASE!’ He drags you away from the camera, your laughter following his footsteps. 

You begin practicing, and slowly you start to slip into the zone. Although it’s a cute and lighthearted concept, you can’t help but treat it with incredible amounts of seriousness, focusing on every bit of advice the choreographer gives you. 

Practice seems to go on for hours, but it’s so much more bearable with Sunghoon’s pearly smile and adorable whining.

After about 2 hours, your bones feel like jelly and your face hurts from smiling. Just as you strike the ending pose for the performance, you hear the door open. 

You turn around to see Tsuki, smiling ear to ear. She waves at you, patiently waiting for the choreographer to announce your break. 

‘Sunghoon, this is your chance!! Go to talk to her!’ You push him lightly and he stumbles, his limbs suddenly burdened with awkwardness as he tentatively approaches Tsuki. 

Your legs and hands may hurt from the hours of practice, but nothing hurts more than the tightening of your chest as you see Sunghoon talking to Tsuki, or at least trying to talk to her. 

He awkwardly tries to make conversation with her, smiling every so often. You see Tsuki smiling back at him, nodding her head quizzically. Her lips curl into a small smile as he continues to ramble, eyes earnest as she listens to every word he says. 

They look good together, complimenting each other in ways you didn’t think could be possible. And Sunghoon looks happy, and you know this is what he wants, she is who he wants. At the end of the day, it’s her, and not you. 

You walk away, not ready to face that pain yet. You sit in the furthest corner of the room, waiting for everything to be over.

Fuck me I wanted to analyze “the symbolism of the moon” in Berserk… because it was an image so often associated with Griffith but also Guts. How naive of me to think that it would be a simple matter of looking into it a bit.

I was wrong because the whole topic of “the symbolism of the moon” turned out to be pretty much huge and a big part of the whole world building, or the cosmogony behind it, obviously. It is far for superficial, far from be only a lyrical motif or one half of the key elements of the eclipse.

While I am still researching the subject and organizing my thoughts - I wanted to share something minor that has been on my mind for a long time now.

A while ago I asked a friend who knows a little Japanese if they thought that Guts name would make them think of the moon. Because I had this image saved, from the end of one of my favorite chapters, chapter 250, that made me think of it. I think it was a beautiful representation of Griffith’s isolation - isolation or alienation is a theme in the chapter itself explored through the characters of Sonia and Irvine. And I also thought that it was a reminder of the calling of Moonlight Boy: the approaching of the full moon* when Griffith would indulge his inner child and reunite with Casca and Guts. (*In the panel the phase represented is a waxing gibbous moon, between a half moon and a full moon).

The reason I asked is because I was thinking of the kanji there in the page, overlaid with it, because it was a very easy association to do, with thinking about the representation of the passing of the time through the lunar calendar:

“Please note that the original Japanese calendar, like some others in Asia, was the lunar calendar, based on the moon’s movement, so the moon’s kanji 月 also means month. The pronunciation of the kanji 月 is “tsuki” (つき) in its kun’yomi (Japanese reading) and “gatsu” (ガツ) or “getsu” (ゲツ) in its on’yomi (Chinese reading). The shape of this kanji is rather simple, and its shape has a clear origin”. (source)

This is what I was seeing basically 👆

And I thought it is easy enough if you have studied the kanji to see it in the moon that Miura depicted above Griffith. And it is also maybe not so strange to wonder what’s on his mind at the end of that chapter. There are no words or sound effects in that page, it’s like a full page illustration. My mind kind of conjured the words and at the same time the fact that Griffith here might as well be thinking about Guts/the time passing=gatsu until he would go see him.

I know that Miura writes Guts’s name in katakana ガッツ gattsu, as if it’s supposed to sound and be read as a foreign name, but I believe it is also used as a term borrowed from English and used for example in the expression ガッツポーズ (gattsupōzu) meaning “triumphant pose assumed by an athlete”. The English word has several different implications or figurative meanings (and Japanese thinking is very often spontaneously figurative because of the writing system). It means bowels first, but it also refers to inner workings that happen in our entrails, internal organs and the figurative meaning of courage, nerve, determination also is commonly associated with the expression having the guts (=possessing the inner workings in order to do something hard successfully). But it also indicates something or someone reactive or reacting without thinking: guts instincts. And all this makes sense to the type of character Guts is: his physicality, his stance, his personality. I’ll also add it here how it could also be a name for someone who doesn’t use his head much, but this isn’t intended as an insult, but as an anticipation of another part of the analysis about “the symbolism of the moon” that will follow.

Of course my friend answered negatively, they didn’t think it was common to associate the image of the moon with the sound gatsu. And I also thought that maybe I was simply misguided because for a long time I had the Italian version of Berserk where the name was transliterated “faithfully” as Gatsu instead of Guts (the friend I asked is an American). But then again, the names of the months in contemporary Japanese are formed by numbers (1 through 12) + gatsu=month=one moon circle approximately and the kanji used is still 月. For example 一月 ichigatsu is the first month January, 二月 nigatsu is February.

So 月 is also commonly written or read gatsu as a very common occurrence, for example when you write down dates. It is probably a stretch, but let me know what you think!

In conclusion, you see now where I was going with this lol?

Count this image as Griffith/Guts too! (You thought this was very serious, didn’t you?). Griffith is looking forward for the full moon to go see Guts in particular, while the Moonlight Boy is the part that is tied to Casca. And chapter 250 is just exceptionally good. Maybe this will inspire someone to revisit it.

Lost, why do people even criticize Erwin for saying, "I don't know and I won't until it does," when Levi asks what he'll do when his dream comes true. This is the most realistic answer to a question like that, because really, how would he know? People make plans as they go, and considering how dedicated Erwin is to his dream, of course, he can't think of something else at the moment. Also, when Levi asks him about his future plans after the basement, he says he'd be eliminating threats beyond the walls, and people take this as him being clueless and blinded by his goal that he hasn't planned anything yet. It's like after he died, they actually did anything else, lol. They literally did exactly what he said he'd do; deal with the threats from outside, those who "wanted them dead," as Erwin said. I'm sorry for the little rant but I see this everywhere, and it's been annoying me to no end.

I feel your pain Anon.  This idea that Erwin cared nothing about humanity, and that he would simply have given up after reaching the basement is not only one of the most egregious misrepresentations of his character, it’s also a very bizarre conclusion to draw from the story. 

Erwin spent his entire life pursuing his dream of proving his fathers theory that the king had altered the memories of people within the walls, and that other people still existed outside the walls who had hostile intent towards them. The discovery of Grisha’s diaries confirmed that everything Erwin and his father had hypothesised was correct, not only that, they also provided the key that had the potential to free the people of Paradis from the walled world.   The idea that Erwin would have just shrugged his shoulders at that point and wandered off into the sunset is just nonsense. That knowledge would have galvanised Erwin and, as you rightly pointed out, he already had a plan - eliminate the threat posed by the people outside the walls and take it from there, which is exactly what Hanji and the others tried to do. Sheesh. 

@tsuki-no-ura has written some excellent posts (X, X) about this recently, which I can highly recommend. I particularly like these points: 

Erwin wanted more than just to know if what his father said was true. He wanted to know what the “memories of the world” that King Reiss erased from their memories were. This implies an intention not just to know about, but to understand and figure out what was out there, not just sort of know that it existed. “Eliminating threats” speaks directly of bringing the fight out to their enemies instead.

And…

It makes even less sense when one considers what actually lay outside of the walls. What’s outside fits in exactly with Erwin’s hypothesis, whereas it is a crushing of Armin’s dreams because it turns out that it wasn’t an unexplored wilderness that awaited them but a populated world. I just can’t see how Erwin’s dream would die when it would have been the equivalent of hitting the jackpot. On the other hand Armin’s dream did actually die when it turned out to be enemies beyond the sea (but is something that Erwin already knew). He can also no longer imagine and daydream now that the reality of what the world is actually like has hit.

Whether all these careful explanations of the text actually change any minds remains to be seen, but I live in hope!

T: The coupling track (of Rinkaku) is so heavy! Its been 15 years since you first recorded Kiri to Mayu, right?

K: Yeh, I cant believe I've been in this band so long.

T: That was just around the time MUCC started. Its awsome when I think about it.

K: It was one of the first songs we wrote after we formed. We rented this kind of container in a warehouse, you know the type usually packed onto ships? And we all logded in there together for a week, and wrote some original songs of our own.

T: So at the very start you only had a handful of songs as Dir en grey? Where did Kiri to Mayu fall in the order of songs? What was the very first song you wrote?

K: The first ones were Aoi Tsuki, and Karma. And then Kiri to Mayu came a few songs later.

T: Do you play it live?

K: ...No

T: Hahaha

K: When we decided to re-do it, I listened to it for the first time in ages, and listening to the end was actually embarrassing.

T: What, because of the arrangement or something?

K: Because of everything!

T: So, the other song on the release is the Remix version of Rinkaku. This remix is by Yamaoka Akira, who created the soundtrack for the horror game Silent Hill. Why did you ask him to do it?

K: Well, we've known him for a while, and when we started thinking about including a remix, we wanted to find someone to do it who you wouldn't normally associate with this type of thing. So we thought of him, and when we asked him, he agreed.

T: Where did you meet him?

K: Well, like connections through work, he came to our lives and stuff.

T: Do you guys play video games?

K: Yeah, well...not much recently, but yeah.

T: What kind of games do you like?

K: RPGs I guess.

T: Like Dragon Quest?

K: Yeah.

T: Dir en grey plays Dragon Quest! Haha. Do you decide on the main character's name at the start?

K: Yeah, Kaoru.

T: Haha, you call it Kaoru?? Dir en grey uses Kaoru to destoy the Demon King in Dragon Quest?! How cute is that??
