With a groan you sat up enough to be able to grab Toge’s arm and move it away from where your head had been resting on it. Any other day you would have appreciated him offering his arm up as your headrest, but not today. You were sore all over from the mission you had just returned from. Your body was littered with small cuts, dust stuck to your skin and your sweat drenched clothes, and every muscle in your body felt like it had been robbed of any and all strength.

The mission itself had not really been dangerous, only exhausting. So much even, that you had fallen asleep in the train back home, and as soon as you had made it up the sheer infinite number of steps to the school, Toge and you had collapsed under the closest tree, not even bothering to make it back to your rooms. Here, on the school grounds you were safe from the prying eyes of public, so you had not made the effort to go further, and instead decided to rest here for a moment. Or a few moments. You had been laying underneath the blooming cherry tree for almost an hour now.

Toge protested loudly as you flopped back down, spread out like a starfish, but without the support of his arm this time. You knew he considered it his sacred duty as your boyfriend to always make sure you were as comfortable as possible.

“Toge, my neck hurts, stop it,” you protested as he tried to wriggle his hand back under your neck. “I just want to lay like that for a moment, okay? We can cuddle later.”

At your side, he whined, but pulled his hand away. You sighed quietly, focusing on the way your spine seemed to stretch out on the ground. It felt like a weigh was being removed. Experimentally you turned your head, trying to stretch out the tension in your neck, when suddenly something warm and heavy flopped down on your chest.

If you weren’t so familiar with this exact sensation, you might have been startled, but you knew what had happened, and so you just groaned a little from the way your chest got compressed by the suddenly added weight. Toge had thrown himself on top of you, arms around your waist, head resting on your chest, his bright hair tickling your chin.

“A warning next time,” you grumbled, but brought your hand up to his head anyway, running it though his strands. They were sweat and dirt coated. It had been over an hour since the fight had ended, but his body was still warm underneath his by now chilly clothes.

“Saamon Tsuna,” You should have seen it coming.

“You’re such a spoiled brat,” you sighed, craning your neck to press a kiss to the crown of his head.

Toge turned his head, resting his chin on your sternum and glanced up to you, indigo eyes scanning over your face as if he was uncertain whether you meant it. Of course, you didn’t, and he knew that, but sometimes you couldn’t shake the feeling that he still doubted your feelings for him. Was it really so hard to believe that you loved him? That idiot. But he was your idiot, and if you had to, you’d reassure him of your love for him until he got sick of it… which was a bold statement considering he always insisted he could never get enough of you.

“Okaka”, he pouted. I’m not a spoiled brat. “Takana-zuke.” You are.

“Oi,” you complained. “What did I do?”

Toge just kept pouting, giving you a moment to take in his appearance. You had been too exhausted to give him a proper once over, earlier only having made sure he was not injured too badly. Like yours, his skin was littered in cuts, his uniform dirty and still wet from sweat. At the corner of his mouth, he had missed a droplet of blood, that had by now dried and turned a dark shade of brown against his pale skin. He had used his technique too much, again. Over the past months he had gotten quite good at estimating how long he could use it, and how the impact of different commands shortened that time. But there were still moments where he went over his limits, and you hated it, hated seeing him hurt.

Reaching up, you ran your thumb over the corner of his mouth, trying to brush the dried blood away, but instead Toge turned his head to kiss your thumb.

“Hold still,” you demanded, “you have some blood there.”

Toge just rolled his eyes and pouted, but let you clean the small stain away, before looking at you expectantly.

“Tsuna Mayo,” he requested.

You furrowed your brows. “What do you want me to do?”

He rolled his eyes again, signaling you that he had expected you to understand him, before he pushed up on his hands and shifted himself so he could kiss you on the lips.

Something about Toge’s kisses always took your breath away. Sure, there were the heated kisses you shared in the privacy of your rooms, but even the smaller, almost innocent ones always made you swoon. His lips were soft and warm, his breath fanning over your cheeks in a familiar way as he pulled back after a moment to look down on you underneath him.

“Okome,” he whispered, making you smile. I love you.

“Okome,” you repeated to him, and satisfied you watched as a smile of his own spread over his face.

“Sujiko,” he smirked, lowering himself down again, so he could rest his head on your chest again.

“What’s that supposed to mean,” you complained. “You can’t make fun of me for saying I love you when you were the one who started it!”

“Shake.” Yes, I can.

“You’re awful,” you whined, your hand immediately finding its way back into his hair. “Why am I putting up with you again?”

“Takana-zuke okome.” You love me.

“Yeah, unfortunately.” You picked a cherry blossom petal out of his hair, the colour of the petal almost identical to that of his strands.

“Okome.” And I love you. Toge’s voice had gotten quieter, heavy, and you knew he was about to fall asleep.

“I know,” you whispered, carding your fingers through his soft hair. “And I’m so happy you do.”

Toge only hummed in affirmation, his eyes fluttering shut as he kept his ear pressed to your chest, listening to your breath and heartbeat. Warm sunbeams fell through the branches and blinded you, making you close your eyes too. Rationally you knew you should get up, go back to your room, shower, get patched up and write the mission report. But you really didn’t want to disturb your sleeping boyfriend. Besides, when would you get the next chance to cuddle with him on a spring afternoon under the blooming cherry trees? You sighed, relaxing against the ground. Nobody would mind if you took a little longer with that report. And if they did… their offence, no matter how big, could not compete with the feeling of peace that flooded your body from feeling Toge sleep with his arms wrapped around you.

was thinking about takeshi and how he's my favorite brand of unconditional devotion btw. the utter and absolute and all-consuming kind that runs so deep to the very core and is so intrinsic and fundamental to it, it can only express itself in the most casual and natural and certain way. without second thoughts, without any room for doubts or for any moral dilemma to be had over it, because of course he ought to always be breathing and living for his chosen person first and foremost. of course he ought to hang on their every word and make them true no matter what, no matter what he has to do to make it happen, no matter what he has to do to other people to make it happen, and no matter what it might turn him into in the process. because it's obviously the way the world should be for his chosen person. at their feet, ready to bend over backwards and break and build itself again to better answer to all their needs even if they don't ask it for it. it's the only right way it should be for them, and of course takeshi's going to do his utmost at all times to make it a reality as much as possible.

and his devotion comes out as naturally as breathing, comes out lighthearted and nonchalant like he might as well be talking about the weather, but it's not unaware of itself. it's not that takeshi doesn't know it's unhealthy and wrong and that he's willing to go entirely too far in its name for anyone's good. it's not that he wouldn't hear you out if you were to sit him down and explain to him just why he needs to tone it down a little (a lot). logically, he'd agree with you and know you're right. and then he'd tell you he's still not going to do anything whatsoever about it. that he's not bothered by it and doesn't feel the need to change anything to his attitude. makes it a point to never let anyone or anything sway him even an inch in the stand he took when it comes to that, no matter how many thousand of times you might go over the subject with him.

because the morality of his devotion isn't the point at all. is entirely irrelevant to it and doesn't affect the way he expresses it all. it's not the metric with which he draws a line in the sand to hold it accountable to. because the thing is, takeshi's entire world revolves around tsuna--tsuna is his entire world altogether, and it's just a matter of fact, that simple. to him it's a truth as unchanging as the sky being blue, and so being the way he is according to that truth is the only way he can imagine being that'd feel right to him. and so the actual and only metric that matters here is "would tsuna be happier if i were to do this?" and/or "is this something tsuna needs me to do?"

and like. i don't think takeshi ever stops being a kind person capable of compassion and understanding and mercy and forgiveness even ten years later once they became mafia through and through. and i don't think either he grows up to be feared and called a monster per se despite the things they inevitably had to do during those ten years (and the things they'll inevitably keep having to do as long as they keep being mafia), at least not in the way, for example, they'll never stop fearing and calling mukuro one. but i do think that among the tenth gen, he ends up being the one with the most ruthless, merciless and horrific blood on his hands of that particular and distinct loving kind. you know the one i mean, right? he comes to be the one most expected and the one first expected to be willing and to take it upon himself to go through with it when the need arises. and to think little of it after, if anything at all. all in the name of making tsuna's reign as easy on him as possible.

and it's to the point where it's the kind of blood that makes even mukuro pause at times. or, when takeshi is the one coming up with solutions himself during meetings, makes even reborn blink. not because it's unjustified or wouldn't be safe or efficient or anything of the sort, but because it is unwarrantedly thorough in its retaliation. and sometimes, at times like this, he's the one tsuna needs to step in for the most, because he's the only one who can reason with him that "yes, this would work in getting rid of our problem" but "no, please, don't do that takeshi". because if tsuna is the only thing that infers on just how much and in what ways he'll let himself be devoted to him, then of course, he's also the only one takeshi's willing to reign himself in for without second thoughts. because he'd hate to ever do something tsuna would disapprove of or wouldn't want him to do. or do something that'd make tsuna see him differently or love him back less even in the slightest.

and it's also like. his devotion isn't an undisciplined one. it's not one he doesn't have control over, the very opposite. it's a very purposeful and conscious choice he chooses to keep making over and over again every step of the way, and he taught himself to have control over it, to know when it's needed and/or wanted, and how much and in which ways it is when it happens, and to keep it down otherwise. and, yes, to also reign it back in at tsuna's request at times when it still slips past his control. because it's all about making tsuna's happiness easier and secure and long-lasting, and never about burdening him with just how committed he is to do that.

so it comes down to this: takeshi willing to go above and beyond and more for tsuna unless tsuna explicitly asks him not to. and to tsuna needing to ask him not to every now and then. and to other people pointing out to him how too many times tsuna's already needed to stop him, and that maybe there's a hint for him to take there. and to takeshi seeing the hint, looking it straight in the eye and recognizing it for what it is and just. deciding it doesn't apply to him because it's all perfectly normal behavior to him. because it's the only kind of behavior that makes sense to him and feels right.

and so—to circle back to my first point—he can only express his devotion as naturally as breathing, so casually, almost like it's something inconsequential and not worth talking about despite how unmistakably it couldn't be further away from being the truth. it's the only way he could have always known how to express it, because, after all, who has ever taken time to ponder about the details and the hows of the way they breathe?

Sorry y'all this one's gonna be a long one lol fun analysis/theorizing/headcanoning whatever the fuck this is under the cut :)

So, lately I've been really thinking about Lambo and Tsuna's relationship, Lambo's connection to Vongola, and Lambo's spot as the Lightning Guardian. I know as a fandom, we tend to disregard Lambo because he has like.. two fights in the whole series or wish that someone else was made the Lightning Guardian because that boy is Literally Five. And I won't act like it wouldn't have been cool to see another character as Lightning Guardian (My Haru Guardian fans rise up where are you) but I think what Amanos done here is really fun too from an analysis perspective.

To start with, Tsuna's family is not really a..traditional Mafia family or even a traditional Vongola family either. Let's look at this here, he's got his Two Best Friends(TM), his crush's big brother, the leader of the Disciplinary Committee at his school, a criminal, a half dead girl, and the aforementioned five year old as his guardians. This is FAR from what's likely expected out of the Vongola family, even when you date it back to Primo AT LEAST PRIMO HAD PRINCES, PRIESTS, SAMURAIS as his guardians. (Though he gets away with having One Best Friend (TM) as his guardian.) Yet somehow, their family makes it work!! They survive the Mafia world, multiple times throughout the series and when it's not working they get stronger as a unit and they fight for each other and make it out together. And I think that's the beauty of their specific family.

So then you have Lambo, who Tsuna would do anything for just to avoid Lambo having to experience a fraction of the shit they go through. And Tsuna actually SUCCEEDS at this, he doesn't normally succeed when it comes to being avoidant of Mafia stuff but this was something throughout the series that he was so genuinely adamant against. He only let Lambo fight when he truly had to and even then he very minimally let the Mafia world wrap its greedy paws around Lambo. Kokuyo arc, Tsuna didn't even sort of kind of a little bit consider taking Lambo with them (which would later help keep Kyoko and Haru safe), Varia arc, knowing that this would disqualify him, Tsuna decided he could not allow Lambo to keep fighting.

Future Arc, Tsuna kept Lambo out of the fight as much as he could, allowing the non-fighters to take care of him and I-pin. Shimon Arc, Tsuna felt real regret at the prospect that he allowed Lambo to come.

(And Arco arc where Lambo was hardly present at either, which I'd like to imagine that if Lambo was involved in Arco arc then Tsuna may have just absolutely fucking died)

Tsuna to Lambo is not his guardian (Frankly, he doesn't view any of his guardians as such, they are his friends, his pride, his comrades, and those he has traded blows with and knows they can be trusted.) Lambo to Tsuna is his little brother. This five year old was sent on an assassination attempt that was absolutely in no circumstance meant to actually succeed and the Bovinos know that. To send Lambo to assassinate the strongest hitman was a death mission. So, Tsuna took this child in (or rather this child stuck around bc his Mom makes banger meals) and immediately Tsuna assumes the role of his brother. Lambo and Tsuna are the closest out of all the kids. (Ofc Tsuna loves I-pin and fuuta too, but I think it's safe to say Lambo is his dumb little brother)

Now, I don't think that Tsuna is ever going to see Lambo as anything but his little brother. I actually theorize that the way TYL Lambo is the way he is because Tsuna never really got out of the habit of babying him. He's calmed down since he was a kid and developed a more nonchalant personality with the occasional tantrum because you can't tell me Tsuna DOESNT STILL view TYL Lambo as a non-combatant. When Tsunas 15, he looks at 5 year old Lambo and goes no thanks that boy is never touching a weapon in his life. When Tsunas is 25, he sees 15 year Lambo and goes that is STILL a child he is never touching a weapon in his life. And yes he's completely unaware of the hypocrisy in my head.

This is a spoiled little brother no one can tell me otherwise.

So we know Tsuna just sees him as his kid brother and not a real guardian. But then you have Lambo's feelings about the whole matter. We know that Lambo doesn't really consider Tsuna a boss but as his big brother, but I don't think that changes a lot for Lambo. While fighting is scary for Lambo, he still desires to follow alongside Tsuna and his friends. He doesn't want to be left behind and makes Tsuna promise him he'll take him wherever he goes. He sees Tsuna freaking out about him being a child in a battlefield and he goes, "No you don't understand, I want to be there."

And that? That right there is what fucks me up after everything. Lambo as a concept for a Lightning Guardian feels really unique because of this. He's the youngest one. He's always going to chase after the others, trying to keep up with them, to walk alongside them. One day, he wants to catch up and be considered a rightful Guardian like the others. And that is so... Tsuna and him would be batting heads over this because I cannot see Tsuna relenting on Lambo staying out of the battle. I cannot see Tsuna ever feeling like Lambo's ready. Not because he thinks Lambo is weak, but because Lambo's his baby brother and Tsuna needs him more away from the battle or else he can't focus.

While Tsuna doesn't react outwardly in this frame, I do think it's not a coincidence that he could focus on fighting the battle and not be "impatient" as Reborn put it, the moment he saw Gokudera and Hibari on the battlefield. He could focus easier knowing his friends were running around saving Lambo and co.

Okay, so you have the Big brother who wants to protect his little brother from seeing the same stuff he does, from fighting the same battles he does, and wants him to grow up as a regular kid (a right which he had been robbed off the moment a certain hitman showed up at his door). Then you have the little brother who wants wholeheartedly to be there, desires to catch up to his big brother and know the world that his big brother knows.

How does this difference in value get addressed? well it doesn't because Lambo is still 5 and Shounen jump are cowards for ending Amanos series when they did <3 B U T we have this.

We all know this scene for when we rewatched Reborn for the first and went "..wait.." because that was some actually sweet foreshadowing from Amano. Okay, so. We have a Lambo who finally did it. Finally is someone worthy of being called the Vongola Lightning Guardian. And Tsuna and co are implied to have just been... Gone. All of Tsuna's efforts to raise this kid in a regular life are ripped away because something happens to HIM, not Lambo. And from Lambo's perspective, he's caught up finally but the person he was following isn't around anymore. He didn't think he'd see him again. I think it's safe to assume that this scene either implies that something happens to Tsuna in his 30s (since we know he wasn't actually dead TYL) OR 20yl Lambo is from a parallel world where Byakuran had actually won and actually took Tsunas life.

And I think that's some real meat to bite into for these characters. A little brother who will lose his big brother if he doesn't do something, get stronger in time. A big brother who won't let him join the battle because he's afraid of losing HIS little brother. A Vongola Lightning Guardian who wants to be a shield for his Boss, and a Boss won't let him be a shield.

And that? That's a good concept for a Vongola Lightning Guardian.

Part 1 of The Advantages of Thirsting

It's not that Tsuna isn't taking this seriously. He is. His friends are on the line, his own safety is on the line. It's just that this is all too chaotic and ridiculous to be his life. He just fought a robot, a real life robot. A machine gun robot. A robot who is using his apparent grandfather as a battery. Again, how is this his life? Tsuna blinks, mind wandering for a moment as the old man gives his speech. Because of course he needs to give a speech, this is not real life this is a Mexican telenovela. Or something. Except with evil, less technologically advanced Iron Man. Tsuna wants a refund. If they're going to make his life into a telenovela, the least they could do is get a proper evil Iron Man. They're a knock-off telenovela.

Story of his life.

All he wanted was to go off to college, leaving tiny Namimori behind. Start over somewhere where his Useless-Tsuna nickname has never been a thing. But no, instead he's stuck here with a tiny gremling tutor, fighting for a position he doesn't even want.

Ah. The villain has started his own monologue. Tsuna eyes him. Fine, so they have an appropriately intimidating-looking villain. Sexy, too. And with a smell that's doing things to Tsuna's tiny alpha brain. Which might make this all worth his time, honestly. Tsuna will sit here, looking disheveled and beat up, as long as it's under the heel of those boots. Tsuna would beg to be under the heel of those boots. This man will kill him and Tsuna will die happy.

Poor Reborn, he tried so hard, only to be defeated by Tsuna's alpha instincts and his horny, horny hindbrain.

"...I will destroy everything you love."

Tsuna catches the end-tail of that monologue and nods because: understandable. "Please do."

"Go ahead," Tsuna answers, readily. "I will die happy."

Somewhere in the background, Reborn hisses.

"...What?" This time, the hot-as-fuck, evil assassin is staring at Tsuna like he's not sure how hard he hit his head. Which is fair.

"I will never find somebody as gorgeous as you to kill me, ever again." Tsuna admits, earnestly. "And your boots are very nice."

"My boots?" Those red eyes look down, staring at said foot-wear.

"Lussuria made those," the screaming one clarifies, like it means something.

Maybe it does, Tsuna doesn't care. "Hayato," he turns, but keeps his eyes on the beautiful demise coming his way, "we're sending this Lussuria flowers."

Hayato's response takes a moment but Tsuna knows he can trust the bomber with this.

However, he lets his thoughts be known when you’re making love, of course. There’s probably no better description for it.

“Don’t look away now,” he coos, calloused but gentle hands slipping over the sensitive flesh of your neck to cup your jaw and turn your gaze back to meet his. “Open up for me, my dove..” Everything he says in moments like these are barely above a whisper. Words meant only for your ears, or to be felt as ticklish vibrations against the nape of your neck, the curve of your waist, the plush of your thighs.. or what sits between them. “Absolutely breathtaking,” a wide grin grows on his handsome features, his long hair falling loose over his broad shoulders and sticking slightly to his moist skin. His chest heaves once, twice.. slower this third time, and he exhales a soft giggle with the next breath. You can’t help but notice how his radiant smile reaches his eyes, and he blinks at you a few times, expression almost frozen in this joyful afterglow. You tell him that you want to go again. “Oh, my love.. you know I have no qualms about taking all that you are willing to give me… come here,”

✧ Lal Mirch ashgdsjkhdfsdjf she can dish it but she can’t take it. She generally likes being in charge in the bedroom and takes very good care of her partners, but when you can convince her to let go of control for once, she gives you the most beautiful low groans and eventually melts into a whimpery mess. Another thing: she avoids name-calling because she doesn't like associating her partners with those words in any context, but will drop a few slightly degradation-tinted praises here and there.

“You like that? Oh, of course you do, filthy little thing,” she mumbles, clicking her tongue as you squirm under her searing gaze. Her long lashes fan over her flushed cheeks as a small smirk grows on her gorgeous features. There are some pros and cons to being a civilian suddenly thrust into not only the cursed mafia world, but also the cursed mafia world.

Pros: he gets paid to do what he loves—to play out his stunts in a setting where he doesn’t have to hold back so as to not to raise civilian suspicions about his condition, while also getting all of the acclaim when his subordinates genuinely shower him with it.

(Was it a mindfuck when some clown just showed up in his living room trying to reclute him? Yes. Is it dangerous? Yes. But if there’s anything the great Skull-sama loves, it’s a good challenge!)

Cons: once in a while he has to spend time in the vicinity of some less-than-desirable individuals, who consider him—him!—to be the less-than-desirable individual. The nerve!

(He’s not factoring Kawahira’s little misadventure, specifically, into this; getting turned into a toddler isn’t any weirder than being able to regenerate his body and coming back to life in his books.

Now that they’re out of the woods and he can laugh about it, he can begrudgingly admit—in the safety of his mind—that Checker Face did it for a noble cause, despite going about it in a not-so-hot fashion. If Skull were a millennia old being, he would play Russian roulette with some douchebags and give them body dysmorphia just for shits and giggles.

Skull will, however, complain about the acquaintances it left him with, as much as he wants, for as long as they’re assholes—which is shaping up to be for a very, very long time.)

The delightful but ultimately exasperating shit show that are one Sawada Tsunayoshi and Reborn-senpai does not fall into either of those categories, but in a secret, third, second-option-adjacent thing: idiots in love who, despite being more in sync with each other’s emotions than anyone could ever wish to be with their partner’s, couldn’t be more out of touch with their feelings if they tried. (And Skull has seen some paradoxes in his time, okay?)

All of this is relevant because, ultimately, despairingly, he’s gonna have to intervene. Jesus fucking Christ.

None of Tsuna’s little Elements, let alone any of Skull’s former colleagues—or anyone else who could, for that matter—is gonna do jack shit about it. They’re all either too emotionally constipated themselves, too scared of Reborn to dare going against him, or too willing to let them ‘go at their own pace’ (as if that will ever lead anywhere!).

So. It all falls into his hands to do something about it.

Does Skull win anything by meddling? Not in the slightest. On the contrary—

“I do not get paid enough for this shit,” Skull groans. “I do not get paid at all for this shit.”

If anything, he’s risking death by Reborn-senpai!

But he owes it to Tsuna, because despite being obviously influenced by Reborn in more ways than anyone would like, he has never, not even once, been unkind to Skull. Even before the whole Representative Battles happened—and that’s a whole other debt he needs to repay.

Unlike anybody else who has ever interacted with both Skull and Reborn, Tsuna has never once lacked basic human decency. (Skull wishes he had lacked basic human decency; he wouldn’t feel so morally obligated to protect the kid’s heart then.)

Enma pats his back in comfort when Skull hides his face in the other’s shoulder. Earnestly, he says, “I think you’re doing something truly honorable, senpai,” because he’s seen those two and knows what Skull has to deal with; more so than Skull, actually, because while Skull can just fuck-off whenever they get unbearable, Enma lives here and still has to interact with them on a daily basis.

What the fuck.

Skull raises his head long enough to look at him. “How do you deal with it, Enma-kun?”

Like the true child soldier he is—and he’s not gonna open that can of worms at the moment; Jesus, why did he even have to think about it?! One emotional crisis at a time, please!—Enma stares off into space before solemnly saying, “I grew up with Adel and Julie,” like that answers anything.

It kinda does, funnily enough.

“Ne, ne, Enma-kun,” Skull wheedles, getting an idea.

But Enma shakes his head, smiling apologetically before he can even say anything else. “I can’t help you with this,” he says, soothing the sting of his betrayal by running gentle fingers through Skull’s nape. “I grew up with Adel and Julie,” he reiterates meaningfully.

It takes Skull a moment.

“That bitch,” he says with an offended gasp. “She told you not to get involved, didn’t she?!”

Enma tugs gently at a lock in reproach. “Be nice to my sister.”

Skull pouts. Enma’s eyes soften. The fond amusement in his expression makes Skull’s stomach flutter.

(Maybe he has indigestion or something? He’ll have to pick up some Otha’s Isan on his way back.)

“If it makes you feel better, I will cheer you on every step of the way, okay? So hang in there, senpai.”

That does make him feel better.

If nothing else, Skull will at least have a cute little kouhai to come back to and be comforted by when this inevitably blows up on his face.

One thing I unabashedly love is cross overs. I love looking at how two different fandoms can intersect, and of course I'm going to smoosh together my favorites any way I can.

In that spirit, I've decided Tsuna is a Hobbit.

Tsuna is a Hobbit, and I'm thinking specifically of Bilbo. It's funny how much Tsuna's basic story line mirrors the other's. Here's this kid with a very average life. While it is not amazing and there is quite a bit he's not happy with, there is a routine to it. Good or bad, he knows what to expect. Then suddenly, Reborn invites himself into Tsuna's life whether he likes it or not, telling him, "We're going on an adventure, and you're going to be our burglar, I mean, mafia boss." Tsuna's all, "Are you crazy?! I'm not going to do that!" and slams the door him.

Of course the disrupter at the door doesn't go away. He brings more people to Tsuna instead. Before he knows it, Tsuna's home is overrun by a host of strange individuals who is eating all his food, and he is Freaking Out.

"Oh my God! Who are you?! Why are you here? Stop fighting/breaking things! Why are you all like this?"

So Tsuna very unwilling goes on this adventure. Pretty much everyone, including himself, doubts he will be of much use, at least initially. He is constantly being underestimated. Reborn is the one who sees Tsuna's potential from the start and pushes him to see that potential too.

Like Bilbo, Tsuna does not want to fight. He hates the idea of it. Everyone around him will be gearing up to throw down, and he's just waving his hands saying, "Guys wait! Can we just not?" However, he will do what he has to do when his friends' safety is on the line. Tsuna might not be the biggest guy and might not seem all that impressive at first glance, but when things go sideways, he is the one to save the day, and he does it in ways no one else would have considered.

By the end of it, he is changed. There's no way he couldn't be after all the dark and scary things he's seen. But the amazing part is how he manages to hold onto all the best parts of what makes him who he is. He's got all the Hobbit Resilience and the Humility too. The world is offered to him on a plate and he's all, "Nah, you can keep it," because now he has his friends, his found family. What more could he need? Well, besides being left alone so he can stay home and hang out with said friends.

So, that is my nonsense contribution to fandom. Tsuna is a hobbit. (And we all know Reborn would jump at the chance to dress up as a wizard.)

As far as I can tell the words are sort of showing the things that surround a space? Kyū tsuna (the translators i've seen either say nine points or ropes) makes me think of the ropes tied at temples, and temples can be both boundary and gateway but I don't have much context for this one...

Henkō I've seen as "polarized light" which seems to reference the blue+red requirements of purple maybe? But also is this image of a wave pulling in two directions, the word making it both divided and still referring to both possible "directions" at once, so it's a concept like his technique rather than a decision of direction.

The crow and shomyo could refer to the voice/message from heaven and the chant to heaven, which is another "conceptual" gap. Also Gojo is sort of answering a prayer while performing a chant, so he is both the messenger and supplicant maybe?

I don't really get "表裏の間" at all. I've seen it translated as "head and tail" "gap between within and without" and "chasm of front and back", google just says "front and back" but the last character translates to something like "interval". It evokes the concept of the end and the beginning being both as far apart from one another as possible, but also as close to on another as possible which seems close to the concept of purple but it feels like reading into it too much...

九綱 (kukou) means "nine ropes". Nine is sort of sacred number here, might be taken from nine virtues of Shakyamuni (whom Gojou have a lot of reference to). And the ropes, just like you said, act as a boundary like in temple to mark sacred place. It could also refer to the state of intertwining as he does to Red and Blue to create Purple 偏光 (henkou), means "light polarization". I agree with your idea here, that it's most likely referring to Red and Blue and the joining of two techniques. 烏と声明 (karasu to shoumyou). means "crow and shoumyou". In opposite to their reputation in the west, crow in Japanese lore is actually thought as the harbinger of good omen. So messenger is right. The 声明 though, it'll read generally as seimei and does mean message. But here, it's read as shoumyou, which actually refer to a style of chanting in Buddhism. It is a style of chanting Buddhist scripture with music. So not ordinary message, but rather special one?? 表裏の間 (hyouri no hazama), translated literally would be "between the front and back". This could be taken literally but also could refer to one's face shown in public and private. So it might means the space between reality and imaginary, as his technique realizes "infinity" from imaginary concept

Is Chika a blacksheep of the family for not having a night name? Or did the Shihouin change their motif at some point from day/sun to night/moon?

And very noticeably he's wearing what looks like a chinese style of lamellar belt(it's hard to say when there isn't an accompanying suit of armor to go with it) but it evokes to me a lot of Ming dynasty period pieces(or alternatively very anime-ass Romance of the Three Kingdoms designs) and incidentally Journey To The West was written in the Ming Dynasty, and combined with his complexion and his distinctive Xiangyun[祥云]:"auspicious clouds" scarf (and of course my ongoing crackpot theory about there being an unspoken theme of pre-Japanese Buddhism underlying the foundation of Soul Society) makes me think he's specifically Indian but having travelled East across China(or whatever the Soul Society equivalents are)

Since, as the 5th division captain, he's not the one with an iris insignia, I'm going to go with the silver grass reference. It does evoke a certain rugged and pastoral landscape that seems to suit the rustic almost hick-ish vibe he has going on.

But as for the deer collecting... it feels like a weird way to phrase it, but I'm assume it's trying to conjure a disney princess-like scene of her attracting deer to her to show her purity and trustworthiness? Maybe???

Also she has a distinctive, Zhōngguó jié[中國結]: "Chinese knot" ornament at the end of her naginata(?) which wasn't shown in the poster. Although the coloration on this sheet is oddly gold rather than the more typical red. What is probably the most common and recognizable design is the Pán zhǎng jié[盤長結], sometimes called an "endless knot" or "eternal knot" and is used to represent various Buddhist virtues.

It might be a stretch but I want to interpret that as the lines of rain falling being equated to the string of an instrument, and by proxy comparing the sound of rain fall as music.

But alternatively it could be another play into Kubo's on-again-off-again rain symbolism. Sometimes it's Ichigo's depression, sometimes it's Uryuu's legacy as the last Quincy, sometimes it's Orihime making confusing statements about joining earth and heaven, in direct contradiction to her Tanabata namesake... Is it "The Rule of Rainfall" as in the downpour comes eventually no matter how you run from it? Or as in, heaven and earth are joined eventually if your just wait? Or as in heavens will be clouded over and separated eventually? Or as in, relief comes eventually and even the worst drought can't last forever?

I want to say On'yomi, but it is fairly close to the Chinese reading Shàndìng[善定] Sìyǒupín[寺有嬪] it's just the dìng[定] vs jou[定] throwing a wrench in it. And I'm hung up on Jiuhin's name sounding Chinese because with the mandarin style collared shirt and the fact that he has... for some reason two... queue... it all points to a distinctly Chinese influence in the design.

Arguably the face paint could also be pulled erroneously from the brooder aesthetic of Chinese opera --as in maybe Kubo was going for a Chinese opera inspired look, but what's here definitely isn't accurate to the style-- but it feels very in line with Kubo's own funky sensibilities either way.

Minor run down: Home Sky/War Sky is sort of a fan on idea that revolves around the idea of skies sort of having zones. Home skies protect the home and the people in while War skies rage war. The above fix is Tsuna/Kyoko but it's the only fic I like with the pairing because Kyoko is TERRIFYING here.

But anyway: Reborn Grandson Tsuna being a home sky who wants to protect his home is yes

Oh yes. Yesssss

Tsuna who has always seen home as people. Who for a long time thought of home as his mom’s laughing voice int he kitchen and hazy memories of little warm hands steadying him. Who never saw his dad as home. As his. He was always too far, too distant, too attached to a different home that’s wasn’t Tsuna and his mom and lazy Sunday mornings where they just got to exist around each other with no pressure.

Tsuna who latches into Kyoko first, knowing somewhere deep down that she is part of his home even if he doesn’t know how. Who gets that feeling twisted with hormones and carries a crush for way too long.

Tsuna who sees Reborn standing over him after falling down the stairs, reaching out to him with little hands warm and smelling of sunlight and coffee and knows that part of his home has returned to him.

Hayato and Takeshi are next. Claimed nearly at the same time with the hissing of dynamite long extinguished still in his ears

They come faster after that. Lambo and I-pin and Bianchi and Futa and so so many more. It becomes a running joke for the others, who Tsuna will see and claim as his and how many times they will try to kill him first. (He isn’t sure the others will ever let him live down trying to block the Vindice from taking Muruko while hardly able to stand after winning their fight. He is sure that Reborn knows that he and Chrome are plotting a way to break Muruko out and is simply waiting until they’re stupid enough to act before stepping in)

Reborn is less than pleased when Tsuna starts claiming other Arcobaleno as his. His mother laughs and tells him that he gets it from his grandfather.

No one is sure how they’re supposed to react when Tsuna claims Xanxus in the middle of a fight to the death.

Tsuna who reminds all of them just how dangerous he is when someone tries to attack his people — his home — and how far he will go to protect all of them.

Madara

From the moment he found out Hashirama would be a father, he was supportive in only the way Madara can be; told him to get the fuck over the shock.

It’s not like he’d leave his dumbass to struggle alone with a baby. The kid would be doomed with just Hashirama and his stick in the mud brother.

Madara wasn’t at all shocked that the girl Hashirama knocked up skipped town after the baby’s birth, but he was shocked that she literally left the baby on Hashi’s doorstep. So he played fairy godfather and sold a few questionable things to help pay for some basic necessities for little Tsunade.

He did not want to hold her. Holding babies is scary and he didn’t feel suited for something so delicate. But he didn’t really have a choice when Hashirama plopped a pillow in his lap and Mito forced placed the ash blonde baby in his arms

Turns out he was a natural and Tsunade didn’t seem to mind him.. but she did have a massive blowout on him and he demanded Hashirama take his disgusting brat back

Once she wasn’t so new, Madara didn’t have a problem holding her for a minute or two and would sometimes just take her from Hashirama whenever he was looking too stressed

He’s the one that laughed about her toddler self fighting the other kids because he was the one that told her she could

While Mito and Hashirama were in college, he babysat her after daycare. often plopped her in his sidecar to go for a ride so she didn’t have to be bored indoors

He also is the one that freaked out when some little boy tried to kiss her on the playground and got into a shouting match with that kids father

Introduced his first born to her as her little cousin

Taught her how to haggle

Was absolutely disgusted when he found out she had a little boyfriend. She’s a kid, she doesn’t need a boyfriend she was 14 and if she’s dating, it should at least be an Uchiha so he can make sure the kid stays in line

Definitely chaperoned her dates or had one of his men do it and scared off at least 2 boys that way

Didn’t really care if she wanted to try his alcohol and laughed when she inevitably made a disgusted face over the taste of it. Stict with the sodas and fruity cocktails, kid.

Also never told on her when she did get in trouble. He’d just picked her up from the police station and told her she needs to either knock it off or get better at hiding it because she’s going to break Mito’s heart.

Tsunade calls him her ‘old man’, but she does give him a genuine call on Father’s Day

He’s got her graduation pictures with the rest of his children’s pictures on display in his living room

They catch up over drinks every third Thursday of the month at the lounge

He doesn’t want to here her bs about being tired of being single because they both know that is by choice. He stopped interfering with her dating life when she went off to college

He has however threatened every Uchiha within 20 years of her age that they better not fuck with her feelings

Obito

Tsunade rescued Obito from a girls beat down and teased him ruthlessly about getting stomped on by a bunch of pigtails

They get a long great and Tsunade was the cool big sister he was glad to have

She helped pop his dislocated shoulder back in and let him and let him hang out with her friends

She also threatened to knock some sense into him when it came to his fighting with Kakashi

He called her about every concern involving Ryu the first 3 months of her life even though he can afford private medical care for their baby

They have gambling nights with Hashirama and both still owe him money he’s not going to collect from them, but it’s funny seeing them still pout like they did when they were kids and losing

Any family get togethers and these two are drinking and burning food in the kitchen while swearing they’ve got it under control

Has leaned to dodge her laughing fits that usually include swatting at him

Shisui

She isn’t the most comfortable alone with him as he told her he doesn’t see her as his family and that paired with his flirtatious ways just has her on guard

If she didn’t care enough to reach out until Tsunade’s father made something of himself, then she didn’t deserve to have access to her. At least that was his opinion

Only him and Tsunade know about that as he ask her if she wanted to meet this woman or if he should just sign the check

She’s the only other person his Palm cockatoo likes beside himself. So whenever Izuna out of town, she watches him

Itachi

She’s only had to treat Itachi a few times and each time he’s been a quiet guy

She knows he’s not the most trusting guy, but at least he’s respectful

She wouldn’t mind if he took over the Uchiha when Madara stepped down

Sasuke

He’s the biggest headache. He stresses her out so much

Order him to take bed rest? He’s back working BOTH jobs

She’s had to lug her medical kit to his apartment to stitch him back up

Sasuke semi avoids her because she treats him roughly (partially because he doesn’t like sitting for it)

When he’s not losing blood, they get along fine

He’ll even bring her a bottle of her favorite wine as an apology of sorts when he’s been particularly stubborn

She does try to give him life advice to solve his relationship problems, but she respects that it’s not easy to deviate from the path he was born into.

Michi

Her little sister. They may not share any blood, but they share parents and that’s what matters

She’s amazed that Michi got a backbone and pulled a power move marrying the next Hyuga head

She finds her energy levels when she’s excited to be a bit exhausting, but still endearing

They often talk to each other about random things and have shopping/lunch dates

She almost choked when she figured out Michi was in some weird love square

Madara’s eldest

They’re best friends

They have no real boundaries, so they know ALL of each other’s business

The have a king standing horror movie night that they both bring food and alcohol to

They promised to be each others maid of honors when they eventually find someone

They often team up to beg for things from Madara

Middle daughter

She doesn’t really know her as she lives overseas with her father and keeps to herself

From the few holidays she’s been around her, she’s been kind to Tsunade and invited her to gamble with her and Shisui

i was looking for this line again for reasons, and the way i remembered it, reborn was saying it as a compliment. but he's clearly not here, and it's so interesting he isn't?

for context he says this after tsuna says yet again that he won't become vongola decimo, and it's like. well i won't go deep into this, but from reborn's pov, who was sent to him to train him to become vongola decimo, that he can't see any improvement on that matter despite all they went through and everything that happened, is, of course, a failure on both their parts (which is also interesting in and of itself).

but from tsuna's pov, that he hasn't become any closer to look the part of vongola decimo, to look the part of a mafia don, is, of course, something to be celebrated and for him to pride himself on. especially because of all they went through and everything that happened, during which they were plenty of room to change tsuna into vongola decimo.

idk, just. something something, reborn wants the exact opposite thing tsuna wants, was sent to tsuna with the express purpose of making him change his mind because they knew (or like, were smart enough to assume it anyway) it was the last thing tsuna wanted, and yet they've always been a team all the same, haven't they? have always been on the same side, have always been standing right by the other's side.

and yet their bond is still the closest and strongest in the manga all the same, isn't it?

I think one of my favourite moments in the series is the end of the storm battle. for one i am a die hard gokudera fan and in my opinion only the gamma fight surpasses it. And on the other-

The fact tsuna who is usually so reserved and just lets dera do his thing despite telling him quietly "you really don't have to"

Gets SO pissed at Gokudera for DARING to put his life on the line for this. A piece of jewelery and an empty title..

He calls it all meaningless if that means they cant just hang out together anymore.

Dera who links his own worth as a human being to his usefulness and position as a mafiosi is told "I just want you alive and by my side" in i think one of the most direct "this is the core of the whole series" moments we get.

When yamamoto faces ken he still holds back bc he doesnt want to get injured but as soon as TSUNA is in danger he says "fuck it" and gets serious.

In the shimon arc hibari picks up on tsunas depressive state and it annoys him so he changes that in his own way.

Its how mukuro in the rainbow trials cares for a tired fran.

Its how during the ring battles the girls and mama Sawada CONSTANTLY visit Lambo to make sure he is okay.

Its also how tsuna saves him in the first place. Fuck the rings, fuck the position, fuck this whole stupid arangement of fights- he has to save his family.

These people often get violent with each other and agressive, they bicker and they fight, but when the chips are down, all they care about is each other.

Most shounen protags have some kind of dream or goal, Tsuna just really really wants a quiet life and to spend that with his friends and family. The whole mafia buisness is just what he needs to do to keep that family he gained safe. Nothing tsuna EVER does is motivated by some ulterior motive for fame or riches. Its either him being FORCED into action bc he was literally kicked into it by reborn, or its because he has to resolve the situation to keep his friends and family safe.

The Caallone has a FUCKTON of members and so does the vongola and Tsuna really really really really REALLY doesnt care for any of that because in the end his own world is very small compared to the mafia.

I have to think of that one quote "why do you want to save this planet?" -"Because I live here!" for tsuna it would be "because my family lives here."

I mean be Tsuna isn't "heroic". Yeah he cares about other people and strangers, he helps old ladies, but when something is going on his go to isn't "I have to do something!" it's uauslly "man I hope SOMEONE does something. Not gonna be me tho!"

I'm so glad you get what I was going for in the post. Those moments drive me insane. "They bicker and they fight but when the chips are down, all they care about is each other" and "Because my family lives here" I FEEL ABSOLUTELY INSANE ABOUT THESE LINES. You're so so right!!! The Vongola kids bully and tease and are nasty to each other, until it comes down to it and they fight tooth and nail for each other. Exactly what I was going for. The series doesn't need those scenes where Tsuna tells Gokudera he cares about him and they're warm and cuddly towards each other, bc it comes through in his words when meek and reserved Tsuna yells at him and tells him to stop trying to die for him or for some stupid ring. And I think that's so fun!! All the other stuff you listed also drives me so insane. For yamamoto, him letting himself get injured for Tsuna's sake was so good and Tsuna's love for Yamamoto shone through there too because Tsuna saw the injury and felt such immense guilt only apologizing for ruining everything for Yamamoto. Only for Yamamoto to go "No, I'm fine. As long as YOU'RE safe" like that's so good???

The Hibari thing?? How he sees Tsuna's depressed state over it all and all he says to comfort him is "Watch me." because that's all he could understand about the situation. That if he wins his fight, somehow Tsuna will cheer up. and its just so???? GOD ITS JUST SO FULL OF LOVE. Every character in this series shows love in their own ways and it drives me maddd

Mukuro taking care of a tired child too doesn't surprise me with his backstory. He's so gentle with people that are in "his care" even if he won't actively admit it.

The girls as well I'm so glad you pointed them out!! We so like to ignore them in this fandom and thats so sad bc the series makes it really clear that they are part of this equation too. That without their support, the fighters would not have made it. Tsuna could relax knowing Mama Sawada and the girls were watching Lambo and focus on his fight. And during future, he could focus on his training. Not to mention, they're just so supportive especially after they find out what's going on. The boycott episode and its resolution are some of my favorite scenes in Future, it makes me insane that the show gave the girls a Moment to remind us that they too are both deeply loved and ALSO love the boys just the same.

You're so right about Tsuna not being heroic, hell even in Shimon arc Enma is being bullied right infront of him and its Reborn that has to be like "STOP OR SAWADA TSUNAYOSHI WILL HAVE TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS!!" He's kindhearted and he's got a good moral compass.. It's hard to explain, but you basically have to be IN Tsuna's circle for you to get that sort of "I will die for you" behavior kksjng otherwise he sorta reverts back to his "who me? im just a 14 yr old boy im nobody"
