Kabir Khan admits ‘the distinction between patriotism and nationalism is blurred’ in India - bollywood
Tumblr media
For a filmmaker who often wades into the world of geopolitics in his films, Kabir Khan is rarely described as a political filmmaker. Perhaps it is the populism of his movies which prevents them from being seen as serious works. It’s a balance he’s frequently had to straddle in his films, from Kabul Express and New York to the back-to-back Salman Khan-starrers he directed, Ek Tha Tiger, Bajrangi Bhaijaan and Tubelight. The director continues his streak in his first streaming show, The Forgotten Army, which was released on Amazon Prime Video on Friday.“I take the politics of my films very seriously,” he told Hindustan Times, and repeated an adage he’s said multiple times in the past: “I’ve often said that I can forgive a shoddy screenplay or bad acting, but I can never forgive bad politics.” Watch our interview with Kabir Khan here:Admitting that history is being distorted in mainstream films -- the recent period epic Tanhaji attracted much controversy in this regard -- Khan said that it is ‘very important’ to him to be historically accurate. The Forgotten Army tells the story of the rogue Indian National Army, which found its origins in the wake of the Japanese occupation of Singapore during World War 2. “Today, the distinction between patriotism and nationalism is blurred,” he said.Actor Saif Ali Khan, who played the antagonist’s role in Tanhaji, questioned the film’s historical inaccuracy, which he described as a ‘dangerous’ precedent. Saif worked with Khan in the 2015 film Phantom, which played fast and loose with history itself, sending Indian agents into Pakistan on a retaliatory mission after the 26/11 terror attacks. Khan, however, asserted that he would never make a film “because something is popular right now and we should fit in with that narrative.” Phantom was released to poor reviews and unremarkable box office reception, seven years after the attacks. Before Uri: The Surgical Strike made the line famous, it was Saif’s character in Phantom who first uttered the line ‘Ghar ke andar ghus ke maarenge’. Perhaps as a sign of how the landscape has changed, Uri became a runaway hit, grossing close to Rs 350 crore worldwide. Also read: The Forgotten Army review: Kabir Khan’s big-budget Amazon series is a forgettable fiasco“History always remains relevant,” Khan said, noting the unplanned connection of a subplot in The Forgotten Army, which depicts a student-led protest, to the nationwide protests against the controversial CAA-NRC bills taking place right now. “When I wrote this story 20 years ago, I would think it sounds so relevant today for what’s happening in the country. Twenty years later, some other parts seem so relevant to what’s happening now,” he said. “History always repeats itself.”Follow @htshowbiz for more Read the full article

Bula To Aloha (Part 1)
It was a March morning as I sat in the washroom half asleep, looking at my emails when something caught my eye.
I was going to Hawaii!
However, prior to that moment, I was on a waitlist. Now two weeks later, I was officially selected to be a part of the Spring Cohort of the Pacific Islands Tourism Professional Fellows Program!
My boss received word of this program through a friend and he was adamant that I apply, and in November I sent in my application.
The days passed and the thought of the trip became even more real as I filled in the necessary forms, introduced myself to the rest of the cohort and wrote a letter to my future homestay family.
A week before I was to depart for Hawaii, there was a pre-departure orientation via Facebook. This was where we got to see the faces behind the emails!
On my final week at work, I had my visa interview at the US Embassy. On arrival, my name was not listed and had to wait for clearance. When I finally could go in, security didn’t allow bags and I had to leave it at the car park booth outside of the premises. Carrying my laptop, I ran back as I was getting late for my appointment, only to realize that I had left an important document in my bag! Arghhhh!
There I was, jogging back out and telling security I forgot something. Retrieved the document and made my way back, ignoring the stares of people as they commuted. Puffed out from the early morning drama, I made my way through the security check and got the interview done. I expected it to take place in a room but it was just at the counter.
My last day of work was on my birthday, before Good Friday. My colleagues celebrated my cake day and also farewelled me. This trip was like the Lord’s birthday gift to me as I would be leaving in three days time. Truly, He makes all things work together. It was a rainy night as I left the office around 8pm after wrapping up.
Saturday night, I stayed up until early morning packing and going through work papers. Got a few hours of sleep and then I was heading to Nausori Airport.
I’ve been travelling the last four years during the holidays and this trip would be the longest I’d be away from home. I’ll admit that I did shed a few tears in the cab as I started my journey (I almost felt as if I were in a music video!)
It was my first time to travel to Nadi by domestic plane. Soon we touched down at the international airport and the 6-hour wait until I leave the country begun.
Tumblr media
Waiting in the departure lounge, I could see that it was drizzling outside. There was an announcement that one of the flights to Australia was cancelled due to weather conditions. It was close to flight time and I wondered why we weren’t boarded yet... or heard anything. Looked over at the screen and saw that word- DELAYED.
Before I knew it, I was now seated on the plane all buckled up and looking forward to the adventure ahead. As we began our descent into Honolulu, I noticed lights from homes that lined the hills. We landed at 2am Sunday morning.
As I followed the crowd, someone from my cohort recognised me. It was there I met another two and we walked together. It was so cold as we stood in line to get through customs, and it was here that we met another member of our group.
We finally made it out of the airport and the first person I saw was our program leader. He welcomed us and soon our suitcases were bundled onto the shuttle bus and off we went. He didn’t come with us as he was still waiting for another to arrive.
It was drizzling as we drove through the dark early hours of the morning. I joked that we brought the rain from Fiji with us! When we turned direction, I saw the East West Center sign and knew we’ve reached our destination. We got our luggage and entered the building that was to be our home for the coming month.
We checked in and went to our rooms. Before I could get in, I struggled with the key card. Tired and frustrated, I stood there trying to figure out how to open the darn door. Finally, I got it and made my way in… annoyed at my tubelight self.
It was a nice little room and on the table was an EWC bag with my nametag attached. I then went back down to the lobby and waited with the others for our program leader to arrive.
When he got there, we got our first per diem, bus pass and a snack pack. How thoughtful! Back in my room I began unpacking, ate a bit and ended up in bed at 7am!
Tumblr media
Got up at 2pm and went out exploring soon after, armed with a bottle of water from the vending machine. It’s funny that I left Fiji on a Sunday evening and now I’m reliving Sunday all over again because of the time difference! It’s like going back in time (I’ve always wanted to time travel!)
The campus was huge with cool buildings and a Japanese garden with koi fish. I didn’t wander outside of the university as I didn’t want to get lost.
I went out with some colleagues and rode on the number 13 bus which was to become our main bus to travel on. My first meal in Hawaii was from an eatery at Walmart. The serving was large and I couldn’t finish!
Let the 6 week program begin!
  NEXT: First week in Hawaii

01/6From Salman Khan in ‘Zero’ to Ranbir Kapoor in ‘PK’: When A-list Bollywood actors made cameos in other movies
Gone are the days when big Bollywood actors would hesitate to star in multi-starrer movies. Today, the actors not only share screen space with their competitors but also graciously play special cameos in each other’s movies.
There have been many movies in the past where A-list actors of Bollywood have played special cameo roles in movies of their Bollywood counterparts. Salman Khan made a cameo in Aanand L Rai’s ‘Zero’ starring Shah Rukh Khan, SRK too made a special appearance in Salman Khan starrer ‘Tubelight’, so on and so forth.
Now, with Shah Rukh Khan all set to play a special cameo in Ayan Mukerji’s upcoming film, ‘Brahmastra’ starring Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt, here we take a look at the times when Bollywood actors made cameos in other movies.

02/6Salman Khan in ‘Zero’
Salman Khan is one of the most gracious and down-to-earth actors we have in the industry. While he is known to be the Godfather of many newcomers in the industry, he is also one of the most polite and giving actors in Bollywood.
Salman not only recommended his friend Shah Rukh Khan Aanand L Rai’s film, ‘Zero’ but also went ahead to do a small cameo in one of the songs in the movie. In ‘Issaqbaazi’ song, Salman and Shah Rukh are seen matching steps and it was a treat for the sore eyes for all their fans.

03/6Shah Rukh Khan in ‘Tubelight’
Much before Salman became a part of Shah Rukh Khan starrer, the latter had done a special cameo in Salman starrer ‘Tubelight’. The actor was seen playing a magician dressed in colourfully embroidered waistcoat with harem pants, kohl-filled eyes and a tattoo on his face in the film.
Salman had revealed in an interview earlier that it just took him a phone call to convince Shah Rukh Khan to play this role in ‘Tubelight’.

04/6Shah Rukh Khan in ‘Ae Dil Hai Mushkil’
Karan Johar and Shah Rukh Khan are not only one of the most loved director-actor duos in Bollywood but they also share a great bond of friendship. The filmmaker had the actor play a special cameo in his last directorial venture, ‘Ae Dil Hai Mushkil’ starring Anushka Sharma, Ranbir Kapoor and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan.
In the film, Shah Rukh is seen playing ex-husband Tahir Taliyar Khan to Aishwarya. His peek-a-boo appearance in the film was loved by his fans and was one of the major highlights of the movie.
readmore
05/6Ranbir Kapoor in ‘PK’
Rajkumar Hirani’s ‘PK’ starring Aamir Khan, Anushka Sharma and Sushant Singh Rajput impressed one and all. The film dealt with an alien who accidentally goes on to break blinding beliefs while searching for his locket he needed to go back home on earth.
The filmmaker called in none other than Ranbir Kapoor to give a remarkable ending to the film in a naked alien avatar and it was simply whistle-worthy.

06/6Amitabh Bachchan in ‘English Vinglish’
Late actress Sridevi starrer ‘English Vinglish’ was one of the most remarkable and much-appreciated films of the actress. Apart from her strong screen presence and brilliant performance in the movie, it was Amitabh Bachchan’s special cameo that stood out in the film.
Sridevi meets Amitabh Bachchan in a flight and their short sequence in the film where the actor is seen helping and comforting Sridevi as a co-passenger was heart-warming.

Salman Khan - Rohit Shetty To FINALLY Collaborate! The Actor Confirms
http://tinyurl.com/y5l5o7vc Even at the age of 53, superstar Salman Khan is single-handedly dominating the box office like no one else. Of late, underperformers like Tubelight and Race 3 have made the star think about his choices of roles, but given the movies like Bharat, Dabangg 3, Inshallah and Veteran Remake, looks like the actor is set to revamp his stronghold. Now, Khan has spilled beans about working with hit machine Rohit Shetty, thus making the fans of both, much excited. In an interview with DNA, Salman Khan was asked about the ‘most discussed’ rumour about him and director Rohit Shetty collaborating for a movie. He quoted, ‘Why is it a rumour? Rohit and I have talked about working together. There is nothing definite yet. If our talks materialise into something, you’ll hear about it”. Salman Khan – Rohit Shetty To FINALLY Collaborate! The Actor Confirms While many stars choose to keep mum about their upcoming projects, Salman seems to be really vocal about the speculations regarding his movies. We just hope that this dream collaboration might take-off really soon. Twitter on Monday launched an official emoji for superstar Salman Khan’s upcoming film “Bharat”. The micro-blogging site came out with the special emoji in partnership with Reel Life Productions, read a statement.
