What is an ideal city? Do examples exist?
Firstly, no single ideal city exists. An ideal city depends highly on the demographic it's being designed for and changes according to its environment. But there are examples of attributes of an ideal city that we can see today that we can take and put together to create what we see as an ideal city.
An ideal city is one that has multiple forms of transportation, including both public and private, while not impacting pedestrian accessibility and safety. Another important attribute of our ideal city is one that is accessible. Having a good thought-out scale and a balance of mixed-use space included in the city. Lastly, encompassing useful, public areas for anyone to use throughout the city helps build community.
TRANSPORTATION
The Garden city had a rail network surrounding the city allowing for easy and fast transportation from garden city community to community making a strong connection between these cities. An ideal city would have this type of strong connection within the city allowing for fast and easy Transportation to different parts of the city. The London Tube is a prime example
ACCESSIBILITY
DC Grid and Broadacre City
Something that comes to mind, when thinking of a city, is a grid plan. The grid planning of Washington D.C is a prime example of how a grid street layout enhances accessibility through any city.
Another aspect that contributes to making an ideal city is creating “mixed-use” buildings, mixed-use implying that buildings won’t be strictly one use. Relating it to ideas learned in lecture, mixed-use buildings have been a concept for a long time. Older buildings were built to house residents on top and storefronts would be on the bottom. ‘Towers in the Park’ included the plan for Radiant City, the redevelopment of central Paris, which contains the same idea of mixed-use buildings, but to an extreme. An example of a city, today, that has mixed-use buildings, and is pedestrian friendly, is Savannah, Georgia. Since it is a smaller city, it is entirely walkable which allows the buildings to be more mixed-use, rather than not.
PUBLIC SPACES
The Garden City was centered around many green spaces. Green and public spaces are the basis of a good community and connection for a city. Much like Garden City, New York’s Central Park allows for a massive area for people and community.
Furthermore, the parks that were built all around Paris after the redevelopment have a similar effect. Although the parks are not centralized in the middle of the city, they are instead spread out and allow for accessibility and many different areas of community and connection.
While not the ideal example of a city overall, Garden City and London provide a good example of zoning giving equal access to all services and public spaces. However, not everyone would want to live in the high density of Garden City, additionally, there is no room for expansion in a system like it.

Technically a Google Maps fail, but "Battersea Power" would be a much better (and less confusing) name for the new "Battersea Power Station" station. #battersea #batterseapower #batterseapowerstation #tube #tubemap #map #googlemaps #googlemapsfail #londonunderground (at Battersea Power Station) https://www.instagram.com/p/CVYK8HRsZFP/?utm_medium=tumblr

https://www.instagram.com/p/B1GI_upgRQk/?igshid=1flg96k5iv9fb
