In May 2023, for several days, a Mediterranean monk seal has been attracting crowds and igniting a “media buzz” while hanging out at the beach right next to the historic city center of Jaffa in Tel Aviv, the major urban area of Palestine.

The Mediterranean monk seal is critically endangered and nearly extinct. This individual seal was named Tugra when spotted in Turkish waters in 2007. But local park administrators in Tel Aviv are calling her Yulia.

Some headlines are proclaiming that Yulia represents “the first time” that the species have been recorded making land on the shores of Palestine. But before the nineteenth century, there were certainly more seals in the area.

In the past few thousand years, Earth has been home to only three species of monk seals, and they are almost entirely extinct.

The Caribbean monk seal (Monachus tropicalis) is extinct. (They disappeared rapidly after Spanish, French, and British empires arrived in the Caribbean following Columbus; but the creature still lived in isolated locations until the middle of the twentieth century.)

There are about 1,500 surviving Hawaiian monk seals (Monachus schauinslandi).

And there are about 350 to 550 surviving Mediterranean monk seals (Monachus monachus).

Here’s the historic distribution range of the three species of monk seal before the nineteenth century:

Historically, before local extinctions, the Mediterranean monk seal lived along the North Atlantic coast of Africa west of the Sahara; in the Black Sea; and all across the Mediterranean from Gibraltar to Alexandria, Cyprus, and Palestine. Here’s the historic and current distribution range of the Mediterranean monk seal (I slightly edited the map just to indicate the location of Tel Aviv):

There are ancient oral traditions, still repeated by the elders of some of the more remote islands, which provide an explanation for the Maldives' atmosphere of lost prehistoric grandeur and for its strange ruins. These traditions speak of a mysterious people called the Redin, said to have built the hawittas, who were described to me by Naseema Mohamed, a scholar at the Maldives National Institute for Linguistic and Historical Research, as:

"Very tall. They were fair-skinned, and they had brown hair, blue eyes sometimes. And they were very, very good at sailing. So this story has been around in Maldives for many, many years, and there are certain places where they say the Redin camped here, and certain places which they say here the Redin were buried. But we don't really know how old or how long ago it happened."

During his series of research visits to the Maldives, Thor Heyerdahl collected and compiled Redin legends from all parts of the archipelago. He concludes that in the memory of the islanders the Redin were 'a former people with more than ordinary human capacities':

"The Redin came long before any other Maldivians. Between them and the present population other people had also come, but none were as potent as the Redin, and there were many of them. They not only used sail but also oars, and therefore moved with great speed at sea ..."

Such notions of humans with supernatural or even god-like powers flying swiftly across the sea in their boats with sails and oars is strangely reminiscent of the imagery of the Rig Veda ... concerning the Asvins - who are several times praised for having conducted a daring rescue in the depths of the Indian Ocean:

"Yea Asvins, as a dead man leaves his riches, Tugra left Bhujyu in the cloud of waters ... Ye brought him back in animated vessels ... Bhujyu ye bore ... to the sea's farther shore, the strand of ocean ... Ye wrought that hero exploit in the ocean which giveth no support, or hold, or station, what time ye carried Bhujyu to his dwelling borne in a ship with hundred oars, O Asvins."

Thor Heyerdahl makes a case that there is real history behind the Redin myth, that it is older than the date now confirmed by radiocarbon for the construction of the hawittas - which tradition nevertheless attributes to the Redin - and that the people it refers to probably originated in north-west India, the primary setting of the Rig Veda ... [at] the great marine dockyard of the Indus-Sarasvati civilization at Lothal [north-west India] ... cowrie shells from the Maldives (Cyprea Moneta) have been excavated amongst the ruins and are to be seen in the site museum ...

Op 12 en 19 juni ontvingen leerlingen uit het Praktisch Onderwijs en het Voortgezet Speciaal Onderwijs de Haagse Ster. De gemeente Den Haag zet met deze stageprijs jaarlijks leerlingen in het zonnetje. De beste stagebedrijven, die net even meer doen om jongeren te begeleiden, ontvingen ook een Haagse Ster. Voor veel jongeren uit zowel het speciaal- als praktisch onderwijs is er sprake van eindonderwijs. Na school zullen zij gaan werken. Daarom zijn stages voor deze leerlingen erg belangrijk om een goede kans te krijgen op de arbeidsmarkt. De Haagse Sterren van dit jaar blonken in het schooljaar 2023-2024 uit in hun ontwikkeling tijdens de stage. Sommige van de leerlingen hebben zelfs al een mooie baan overgehouden aan de stage. Gerben Hagenaars, gemeentedirecteur onderwijs, sprak de stagiairs en stagebedrijven toe: ''Vandaag zetten we de leerlingen, die uitblinken in hun kennis en vaardigheden die ze tijdens hun stage hebben laten zien, in het zonnetje. Ferman (tur. fermān od staroprezijskog framānā) u Osmanskom Carstvu pisana sultanova naredba, zapovijed, dekret ili diploma. Ona je sadržavala odluke, uredbe i naredbe od državnog značaja. Fermani su regulirali vojna, svjetovna i šerijatska pitanja, a najčešće su pisani posebnim arapskim pismom divanijom. U osmanskoj državi mogli su ga izdavati i veziri. Sultan je ferman potvrđivao tugrom ( Tuğra je kaligrafski amblem ili potpis sultana Osmanskog Carstva koji se nalazio na svim službenim dokumentima i prepiscima. Također je bila urezana na njegov pečat i utisnuta na novčiće iskovane tokom njegove vladavine. Tuğra bi bila oblikovana početkom sultanove vladavine i dvorski kaligraf bi je iscrtavao na pisane dokumente. Prva tuğra je pripadala sultanu Orhanu I. (vl. 1324. – 1359.), drugom vladaru Osmanskog Carstva. Ona se zatim razvijala i dostigla klasičan oblik tugrom sultana Sulejmana Veličanstvenog (vl. 1520. – 1566.). Tuğre su imale sličnu funkciju kao kartuš u starom Egiptu. Svaki osmanlijski sultan imao je vlastitu tuğru. Tugra je bila službenim sultanov monogram. Njime je potvrđivao npr. Fermane)

Aradan 11 yıl geçti Çeşme restorasyona girdi. Tuğra yine koyulmadı. Tuğrayı kaZıyanlar 2010 yılından beri Tuğrayı koymayanlar ve şimdi restore sonrası görmezden gelenler sizlere ne diyeyim bilemedim. Bakın Mustafa Camba 2010 yılında ne yazmış... Vandallar özellikle Beşiktaş çevresinde çok mesai yapmış. Burada bulunan bir çok çeşmenin tuğrası kazınmış. Silahtar Yahya Efendi Çeşmesi, Zevki Kadın Çeşmesi, Ertuğrul Tekke Çeşmesi, Abbas Ağa Parkı’ndaki Hamidiye Çeşmesi ve fotoğrafta görülen Yıldız’daki Hamidiye Çeşmesi… Yıldız Posta Caddesi'nde, Sabancı Lisesi karşısında yer alan çeşme, Sultan 2. Abdülhamid’in yaptırdığı aynı isimli ve mimari olarak birbirine benzer çeşmelerden biridir. Zarif süslemeli alınlığının ortasındaki 2. Abdülhamit tuğrası yok edilmiş. Sultan abdülhamid’in Yıldız albümleri arşivinde yer alan eski fotoğrafta bu çeşmenin açılış töreninde çekilmiş. Dikkat edilirse alınlık üzerindeki tuğra görülüyor.
