AIR QUALITY WARNING
Hey fellow Northeasterners on Turtle Island, aka the USA and Canada! Recent wildfires are spreading smoke and dangerous air conditions across New England. I only realized this because of social media, so I'm spreading the news further with maps for visuals. Things are officially UNHEALTHY so everyone needs to be careful, especially anyone with heart or lung conditions.
If you're in NY, MA, RI, CT, NJ, etc, please be careful!
Close your windows (consider sealing them if it's really bad)
Wear respirator masks (ex N95s) outside
Turn on air filters if you've got them
Use fans inside to keep cool and keep air moving
Check for air coming in around window AC units! You can probably still use your AC, but remember that their filters generally don't block smoke.
Remember, wildfire smoke doesn't just include burnt up trees but can include all kinds of hazardous materials, so the less outside air inside your house the better. If you've got any DIY Corsi-Rosenthal Boxes around for COVID-19 filtration, they excel at filtering out other dangerous particles too. Here's a diagram for making one, :
Tumblr media
Also, try to avoid strenuous activities (ex moving furniture, climbing lots of stairs, etc) and listen to your body's needs. If you need to lay down and do nothing for a while, go for it. Stay hydrated, especially if your throat is getting scratchy! If you've got asthma, make sure your meds are close by.
Take care of yourselves and each other out there!
-----------
6/7/23 UPDATE:
Tumblr media
Thought I'd add more context and sources for people to look up their own areas! The above map shows the current outbreak of wildfires across the West Coast and Midwest, versus the huge plumes of smoke traveling across the north, middle, and east of the continent, including Mexico. Click the source link to explore the map yourself.

Silly scenario, but imagine something goes wrong in Alchemy, which results in Riddle getting turned into a fish, specifically a goldfish like a legit goldfish, not a merman. If Floyd were to find out, depending on his mood, he would either laugh or annoyed that his goldfishy quite literally turned into a goldfish. Now imagine Floyd carrying goldfish Riddle around the campus in a small tank. This was funnier in my head, I swear.
I'm so sorry, Riddle, because Floyd has the impulsive decision-making of a 2-year-old who just discovered free will.
He's dropping Riddle into his mouth and just barely registers, “oh wait, I probably shouldn't eat him lol” before spitting him back into the bowl.
If you wanted to take it on a much sweeter, shipping note, this would be a great opportunity for Floyd to show a much softer side to Riddle. I'm assuming that Riddle is still very sentient and aware in this new form, but maybe the others aren't aware of that.
This includes Floyd, for plot purposes of course, as he takes to carrying Riddle in a little baggy. Riddle's not happy, as he's been snatched from Trey and Cater's very dependable hands and is now being jostled around in this stupid eel's hands.
Imagine his surprise when Floyd, upon entering an unfamiliar part of Octavinelle, carefully drops him in a pleasantly cool, refreshing tank. It's a freshwater one, too, which doesn't match the rest of the waters surrounding the dorm. It takes a moment for him to realize that it's probably one of Jade's terrariums, perhaps gifted to Floyd, if the random knick-knacks like a small bouncy ball and a still wrapped lollipop were any indicator.
I suppose he could be fascinated with freshwater marine life, being from the sea. Still, it's much more well-kept than I'd expect from Floyd, of all people.
There's a few other small freshwater fish swimming in the small tank as well. They looked remarkably healthy and lovely, despite being mostly gray and silver. The filtration system looked expensive too, was this all really Floyd's doing?
“Floyd, did you really put Riddle into my tank?” Ah, never mind, this makes more sense. “I thought I told you after the last time, stop added things into my tank. And when did you add that candy?”
Riddle had never heard Jade speak in such an irritated tone, it reminded him of how Cater would speak with his older sisters on the phone. Siblings don't always get along, he supposes.
“Aw it's fine, the little guys love my decorations! And besides,” Floyd leaned down to stare at Riddle with his bi-colored eyes. They looked quite pretty, he'd hate to admit.
“I gotta take care of my Riddle!” Huh, Floyd never, if ever, called him by his actual name. “Sea Turtle and Seabream probably would've kept him in that stupid bag until he turned back. That's no good!”
Riddle watched as Floyd rested his head on his arms, gazing at him with an expression he'd rather not name as Riddle swam around in the water. He had to admit, the water against his scales felt quite nice, Riddle wondered if being in a merform would be the same?
“And I gotta make sure he likes the water, that way he'll agree to move into our home after we get married.”
WHAT
Riddle was glad that he couldn't do more to express himself other than fan and flutter his fins and gills, as he's sure Floyd would rub his sudden embarrassment in his face.
“Please, you have to confess for that to even happen.” Jade scoffed as he reached his hand in to pick out the toys and trash Floyd had left in the tank. “And that's if you get him to not hate your guts.”
“Jaaaaaaade! You're being meeeeean!” Floyd turned back around to wrap his arms around his brother's waist, letting himself become deadweight for Jade to drag as he tried to walk to the trashcan by his desk.
“You can't say nothing! You're in the same boat with your mate!”
“I am most certainly not!” Jade's huff was almost amusing, if not unsettling coming from him. “My darling is just shy, I need to be careful—”
“You're a scared little bitch is what you are.”
Riddle watched as Floyd immediately ran out of the room, Jade following right after him. He thinks he could make out sounds of crashing, but it was muffled from the water and glass. It took all but of a few minutes for a disheveled Floyd with a blood nose to zoom back into the room, nearly smacking against the tank as he fell to his knees.
“Sorry Little Goldfishie, didn't mean to leave ya alone. I'll stay with ya for a while until you turn back into my Riddle. 'Kay?”
Perhaps delusional lovesickness ran in the Leech family. Perhaps Riddle was also a bit delusional, as the fond look in Floyd's eyes didn't completely turn him off.

Note
To properly care for a turtle as a pet, provide a suitable habitat with both land and water areas, maintain a clean environment, ensure proper temperature and lighting, offer a balanced diet, and practice good hygiene.
1. Habitat:
Size:
Turtles need a spacious enclosure, with a general rule of thumb being 10 gallons of tank space for every inch of their body length. A 40-gallon aquarium is a good starting point for many turtles, and the enclosure should be at least four to five times longer and three to four times wider than the turtle.
Land and Water:
Turtles need both land and water areas. A basking area with a heat lamp and UVB light is essential for regulating body temperature and vitamin D production.
Filtration:
A good filtration system is crucial to maintain water quality, as turtles can be messy eaters.
Water Quality:
Regularly change the water, and ensure it is free of chlorine and chloramines by letting tap water stand for 48 hours.
Substrate:
Use appropriate substrate like aquarium gravel or sand, avoiding picking rocks or sand from nature as they can contain harmful bacteria.
Decor:
Provide safe decorations like rocks, logs, and artificial plants for enrichment.
2. Temperature and Lighting:
Temperature: Maintain a temperature gradient with a basking area (85-95°F) and a cooler water area (75-80°F).
Lighting: Provide UVB lighting to help turtles synthesize vitamin D.
Heat Lamp: Use a heat lamp for the basking area to provide warmth.
3. Diet:
Omnivores: Turtles are omnivores, meaning they eat both plants and animals.
Pellets: Feed your turtle high-quality turtle pellets as the main food source.
Vegetables: Offer a variety of dark leafy greens, like lettuce, cabbage, kale, or dandelion leaves.
Protein: Provide protein sources like crickets, mealworms, waxworms, or feeder fish as occasional treats.
4. Hygiene:
Regular Cleaning: Regularly clean the tank, removing uneaten food and waste.
Water Changes: Perform partial water changes (25-50%) regularly, depending on the filtration system.
Handwashing: Always wash your hands thoroughly after handling your turtle or its tank.
5. Health:
Regular Checks:
Regularly check your turtle for signs of illness, such as lethargy, loss of appetite, or sores.
Veterinary Care:
Take your turtle to a veterinarian experienced in reptiles if you notice any health problems.
Salmonella:
Be aware that turtles can carry salmonella bacteria, so practice good hygiene to prevent the spread of the bacteria.

Hydrodynamic AU
uhhh hi so. This has been cooking in my brain for a few months now (6???) and basically it’s a ROTTMNT Separated AU with Donnie as the focus but like, y’know. It’s all of them. I call it Hydrodynamic AU cause a lot of it comes from Donnie being more…water-based I suppose?? Either way. Yeah.
The story (if I ever find the willpower to draw it up) would revolve around Donnie going out and finding their siblings in the various locations; not to try and turn them towards the side of light or whatever. Donnie just wants to hang out. The universe has other plans, however.
More on each character under the cut!!! And lmk if any of you are interested in this!
Tumblr media
Donatello Hamato
•Raised by Splinter
•They/them pronouns (Non-binary!!)
•Goes by the usual canon nicknames, but mainly uses “Dee”
•This Dee’s whole thing is being extremely water-based
•Donnie actually knows Repo Mantis before he got mutated! They started sneaking into his junkyard as a kid and got caught and they actually bonded
•When Don got older, they started helping Repo out with repossessing work; the two are even closer after Repo mutated!
•Don usually doesn’t wear their battleshell in this AU! It gets in the way of swimming stuff, so they prefer to be without it most of the time
•All of their stuff is painstakingly designed to the waterproof
•The whole lair has a ton of water slides in it, it’s super fun
•AUTISTIC!!!
•Don is extremely bad at socializing and doesn’t know how to mask (nor do they care for it). Can’t identify social cues well.
•Still friends with April; Don also hangs out with the Purple Dragons regularly (they give them ✨validation✨)
•Athletic only in how they’re an avid swimmer
•Really likes Lou Jitsu movies, and likes hearing their father talk about the films
•Splinter helps them train when they ask, thought Donnie also trains on their own with just. Copious amounts of research and looking up techniques
•Splinter is also extremely overprotective of D due to both their soft shell and the fact that he lost D’s siblings previously.
•More open to active destruction than canon Don?? At least in the way that’s like. More disregarding the well-being of others sometimes. Basically this Donnie doesn’t have their brothers to stop them from doing stuff. Violence and loose morals ensue.
•Builds Shelldon earlier on in life (was lonely and wanted company)
•Don has thoroughly explored the city’s sewers and set up tons of markers so they wouldn’t get lost; they’ve practically memorized the layout underground by now. Don has also installed a filtration system in the sewers to help take care of pollution because they don’t like how icky the waters can get
•Uses more turtle noises than actual words at times
•Fights with tech bō staff, but also knows the basics of other weapons; has the second most proficiency in daggers/knives.
•Doesn’t know anything about mysticism until meeting Mars and Draxum
•Technically, Donnie meets Mars first, then Leo, then Rento. However, we later find out that Don has met one of their siblings beforehand and knew of their existence. But that’s for later.
Tumblr media
Marciano Draxum
•Raised by Draxum
•He/they pronouns
•Goes by Mars most commonly, but other nicknames include Marc, Marcie, Mar-Mar, Marky, Marce, and Marcus
•Draxum is actually a good parent okay
•Instead of Doctor Feelings and Doctor Delicate Touch, we get Sir Feelings and Sir Delicate Touch (they’re used as ranks, it’s some class thing idk. It’s ranked below Baron is all I know)
•Feral
•At a certain age Draxum started letting them out more (with supervision) and Mars got super friendly with all the yōkai he came across!! Due to this, Draxum has a much stronger active relationship with the Hidden City yōkai community.
•Mars uses their free time to create art around the Hidden City
•Has never seen the surface; wonders what the sky looks like
•Extremely strong mystic powers that were discovered early on
•Mars knows like, everyone in the city, and by the time they’re older are allowed to go about it from the lab as he pleases.
•Has a secret fascination with humans and their stuff that he keeps from his dad
•Draxum mellows out a tad raising Mars, being fatherly and all that. Still wants to take down humanity, he just wouldn’t do it if it meant endangering his child.
•Mars is an extremely adept fighter, having trained with Draxum since they were able to.
•Secret love for Lou Jitsu movies that he found one day in the yōkai markets
•He and Leo have met before and they have a very intense rivalry. Those two. Do not like one another.
•The reason behind the name “Marciano” is that I doubted Draxum would name his kid after some human artist. “Marciano” has French, Italian, and Latin origins, though I was mainly going for Latin when I chose it. It means little warrior! The name also has a lot of relation to the Roman god of war, Mars, which also happens to be the main nickname I picked! So it fits.
•Doesn’t like to kill; would rather thoroughly incapacitate a person through extreme measures instead.
•Terrible swimmer
•Draxum’s whole place is a lot more…nice looking? It’s got more style and creativity to it. Mars helped decorate.
•Fights with kusari-fundo and hand-to-hand mostly. Also knows the basics of fighting with other weapons.
Tumblr media
Leonardo
•Raised by Big Mama
•He/him pronouns
•Trans man
•Goes by Leo most commonly; the other in-canon nicknames still apply too
•Both outfits are colored after Leo’s pride flags
•The paint designs vary a lot, Leo likes to show variety
•After meeting Donnie, he actually starts to incorporate more purple into his color scheme!
•Gay gay gay gay gay gay GAY.
•Fights in the Battle Nexus for fun; really loves the thrill of it.
•Spoiled
•Manipulative as fuck, picked it up from his mother. EXTREMELY good at lying
•Gets bored easily and will act out to negate this feeling
•Talks a whole lot while fighting; always making jokes, trying to throw his opponents off their game. (Think Spider-Man or Deadpool)
•Leo can actually get really violent at times
•Backstory behind Leo’s name is that they had an old name when they were younger and hadn’t come out yet, but upon realizing they were trans, wanted to pick out a new name. Big Mama gave him a ton of resources and books and stuff to help with that process, but it was actually in an old book of Lou’s that had been left behind that Leo found the name “Leonardo” and went with that. It’s a really stupid coincidence, but it is what it is.
•The fact that Leo chose that name from one of Lou’s books is bittersweet for Big Mama. And kinda funny lol
•Mars and Leo have a rivalry that formed because of BM and Draxum.
•Super fond of Lou Jitsu movies, but can only ever watch them in secret
•Leo will sneak out to Hueso’s whenever he can because he feels like it’s the one place where he can relax and not have to hold up appearances
•Leo still knows Spanish in this au
•He’s still a very cocky showboat in this, just dial that up to 11.
•Mainly uses ōdachi or katanas to fight, however, Leo tends to just use whatever’s on hand in matches. Knows how to fight with a wide variety of weapons semi-professionally (and I say that loosely, Leo mostly just wings it)
•Able to use mystic powers and uses them well, but prefers not to when fighting.
•LOVES stage magic with a passion, and actually practices it in his spare time.
Tumblr media
Rento Jones
•Raised by the Foot
•She/he pronouns
•Goes by Ren for short
•Backstory for Rento is that little Cassandra was lonely and didn’t have anyone her age in the clan, and the Foot Lieutenant & Brute ended up finding this baby snapping turtle on a whim and gave him to her as a pet. Little did they know Cass just gained a new sister instead of a pet.
•Much more prone to violence than in canon (or at least to anger)
•The name Rento has a few meanings to it, but I mainly chose it because it started with an R and it fit. And was of Japanese origin.
•Cassandra is adamant about the two of them being siblings, and since Ren didn’t have a last name of her own, Cass shared hers
•Rento is still extremely soft on the inside, but is very afraid to show that side to people he doesn’t know.
•The entire Foot Clan will annihilate you if you hurt Rento in any way
•The clan is super fond of its spiky murder reptile!
•Ren doesn’t realize what she’s doing might be seen as “wrong”, he’s just focused on helping the Foot and being proud of that. Only ever hesitates when directly hurting innocent people or animals comes into the picture.
•Rento’s only issue is with hurting innocent people or creatures; she won’t hold back if something gets in his way.
•Cass and Ren have a habit of hyping each other up
•Rento is super proud of looking big and scary cause it means she can better protect the people she cares about!
•Cass and Ren can both speak Japanese to a degree
•She has a huge collection of plushies that have either been gifts to him or were stolen from large businesses; can’t sleep without at least a few plushies around.
•Only turtle of the four who doesn’t know anything about their backstory or having siblings
•Switches between sai and tonfa to fight, but mainly sticks with the sais.
•Second-best fighter of the turtles; also knows how to fight with other weapons in basics. Mainly relies on hand-to-hand combat.
•Doesn’t know anything about mysticism
•Not very good at origami
•Loves watching Lou Jitsu movies, though Cassandra doesn’t share the enthusiasm.

Do you think you’ll add turtles to your pond? That would be awesome!!
I would really like to! My biggest concern is that they would eat all the frogs. Presumably in a big enough pond they could coexist, but I have no idea how big of a pond is big enough. I've also heard you need a very good filtration system to deal with their waste, which might not be feasible for a pond my size. I'm gonna do some research this winter, and maybe introduce one next summer if I decide to give it a shot.
Also, fun turtle story: A few days ago I was driving home when I saw a guy pulled over, out of his car and using a stick to try and nudge a snapping turtle out of the road. Swear to god the turtle must have jumped a foot into the air while twisting around to snap at the stick. They are WAY faster than you would think! The guy jumped back but he looked like he was having the time of his life, so I left him to it.

I'm going to try to do a natural/planted aquarium (keyword being try because turtles tend to destroy aquatic plants lol) so I just ordered some java fern and anubias and hornswort and water cabbage YIPPEE!!!!!! Also more substrate and some driftwood and a more natural LED light . This is the cosmetic phase of the turtle quest and next I'll move onto essentials like basking dock and heat/uv lamp and filtration

The Great Barrier Reef (Week 5)
After a very memorable trip to Singapore and Bali, it was time to visit the Great Barrier Reef with my summer class. But first, Lauren and I had to take a train from Brisbane to Hervey Bay where we would meet up with our class and fly out to Lady Elliot Island (LEI). The day we had in the 3rd largest Australian city consisted of a lot of walking through the city streets, spotting spiders in the Botanical Garden, and philosophizing about human nature as usual.
Tumblr media
We were eager to get on our first Australian train that would take us to Hervey Bay, but after reaching the first stop and halting for the next 3 hours, we had started to lose hope. Apparently a tree had fallen down onto power lines which fell onto the tracks up north, preventing our train from moving forward. Southeast Queensland is notorious for having bad thunderstorms and flooding. With the canceled train and nowhere to stay, all we could do was wait patiently and hope that the train company would coordinate accommodation for us and secure us a train ride for the following day. Luckily, the train company followed through and we got to spend an extra day in Brisbane which we used to walk around some more and then watch Mean Girls in theater (I highly recommend giving it a watch). Seeing how patient and cooperative all the Australians were during all the train chaos was very inspiring and a testament to the lax culture Aussies embrace. Isolated from the rest of the world, people here seem to prioritize self-care and community instead of work and politics. When the weather is this nice all the time, I sure can’t blame them. Soon enough, we found ourselves in Hervey Bay, and then on one of the smallest planes I have ever laid my eyes on for just 12 passengers to get to LEI.
Tumblr media
Just like that, I found myself standing on a tiny island that would take only 45 minutes to walk around.
Tumblr media
A picture of LEI from the plane.
LEI is the southernmost point of the Great Barrier Reef and it’s known to be a breeding ground for almost 100 different species of birds, 3 species of turtle, as well as countless fish, rays, sharks, and so much more. It’s also home to an eco-resort dedicated to educating visitors about the surrounding coral reefs and wildlife while being fully self-sustainable. Through my class, we got behind-the-scenes tours from staff to learn about the sustainable practices used on the island including solar panels for energy, a water desalination and filtration system, and even a composting machine that could take any thrown out food from the buffet and turn it into fertilizer. In our spare time, students were free to snorkel, scuba dive, and explore as much as we wanted. Within the first 2 minutes of my first snorkeling adventure, I watched a small shark swim right below me, saw countless fish, and witnessed the beauty of an underwater world I never could have imagined. I had no idea that coral reefs came in every color from yellow to green to purple and that sea turtles use their flippers to itch their faces just like my dog, Roni, uses his paw when he has something in his eye. I watched a line of baby squid float side-by-side without a care in the world and a baby turtle poop as if performing for us eager snorkelers. I was introduced to over a dozen different turtles over the days and learned that my favorite part about turtle-watching was seeing them come up for air and poke their little heads up out of the water while they’re massive shells floated at the surface. Each shark I saw (all about the size of a dolphin or smaller) reminded me of their beauty and surprisingly calm nature, but impressive speed and agility. I also laid eyes on barracuda as well as a stingray in their natural habitat and I overcame my fear of scuba diving as I made my first dive down 12 meters! The experience was thrilling, but showed me that I could see the same beauty while floating at the water’s surface – a more comfortable location for a mild claustrophobe.
Tumblr media
A screenshot from a video where a shark swims under a turtle we were watching!
All in all, the quick 5-day trip was one I will never forget and one that I will never fail to recommend to any future Australia-travelers (just don't forget to bring a hat to protect you from the bird poop!).
Tumblr media
 Cheers!

Ocean Pollution from Construction: The Hidden Impact on Our Waters
Tumblr media
Hello there! TCE Constructors from San Diego here. We’ve been in construction for years, and there’s something important we need to talk about – how building  impacts our oceans. Living in a coastal city like San Diego, we see firsthand how construction affects our beautiful waters. It’s not always pretty, so let’s have an honest chat about it.
How Construction Pollutes the Ocean
When we’re working near the coast (which happens a lot around here), materials can easily end up in the water. Cement, paints, plastics, and metals – if they’re not contained properly, they wash into the Pacific. Construction sites create tons of dust and sediment that rain washes away through storm drains. This stuff eventually reaches the ocean, smothering marine habitats and blocking sunlight from underwater plants.
Impact on Marine Life
Marine animals often mistake construction debris, especially plastics, for food. We’ve seen reports of fish, turtles, and birds with stomachs full of plastic bits. It’s pretty devastating. Chemical runoff from construction materials can create “dead zones” where oxygen levels drop so low that marine life can’t survive. In San Diego, where our economy depends on beautiful coastlines, that’s a serious problem.
Industry Challenges Our industry has a long way to go. Construction contributes significantly to ocean pollution worldwide, and changing that means rethinking how we build. Some innovations we’re excited about include biodegradable materials, better water filtration systems, closed-loop water recycling, and sustainable cement alternatives.
What You Can Do
If you’re planning a construction project near the coast:
1. Work with companies that care about this stuff (like us!) 2. Include proper drainage and filtration systems 3. Consider recycled or sustainable building materials 4. Ask about ocean protection measures
The Future of Ocean-Friendly Construction
The future of coastal construction must include ocean protection as a core principle, not an afterthought. Green building certifications are starting to address ocean impacts more directly, which is great. But we also need more awareness among clients and contractors. At TCE Constructors, we’re making ocean protection part of our company culture. It’s not just about following regulations – it’s about genuinely caring for the environment that makes San Diego amazing.
Building Better Together
That’s the real talk about construction and ocean pollution from folks who work in the industry every day. It’s complex with no easy answers, but acknowledging it is step one. If you’re planning a project or just want to learn more about building responsibly, reach out! We’re not perfect, but we’re committed to improving how we work to protect our oceans.
Because what’s the point of building new structures if we destroy the natural beauty that makes San Diego special?

Top Benefits of Professional Pond and Fountain Cleaning
Maintaining a clean pond or fountain isn’t just about aesthetic appeal—it’s essential for the health of the water, plants, and animals within, as well as ensuring the longevity of your feature. Regular cleaning can have a significant impact on the overall environment, and when it comes to pond and fountain care, there’s no better choice than a professional service. Here are some of the top benefits of hiring a professional pond and fountain cleaning service, with a special recommendation for First State Ponds & Fountains in Delaware, USA.
1. Healthier Water Environment
When your pond or fountain is cleaned regularly, it helps to maintain a balanced and healthy ecosystem. Over time, organic debris like leaves, algae, and waste can build up, disrupting the water quality. These pollutants can harm fish, plants, and other aquatic life. Professional cleaning services can remove these contaminants, ensuring the water stays clear, oxygenated, and free from harmful bacteria. For ponds with fish, this is especially crucial, as poor water quality can lead to illness or even fish fatalities.
2. Prevents Algae Growth
Algae blooms are a common issue in ponds and fountains, particularly during warmer months. Algae not only make the water unsightly but also deplete oxygen levels, affecting the health of aquatic life. A professional cleaning service can remove excess nutrients and debris that promote algae growth, as well as apply treatments that help prevent blooms from forming in the future. With First State Ponds & Fountains, you’ll receive expert care and treatment to keep your water looking pristine and algae-free.
3. Improved Aesthetic Appeal
A dirty or neglected pond or fountain can quickly become an eyesore. Whether you have a small decorative fountain or a large pond with aquatic plants, regular cleaning helps to keep the water clear and the surroundings beautiful. Clean surfaces, free from algae or sediment buildup, will make your pond or fountain a centerpiece in your garden or landscape. First State Ponds & Fountains understands how important the visual aspect is, and their professional team ensures that your feature always looks its best.
4. Prevents Damage to Equipment
Fountains and pond filtration systems are susceptible to damage if they’re not maintained properly. Leaves, debris, and algae can clog pumps, filters, and pipes, leading to reduced functionality or even breakdowns. A professional cleaning service ensures that all components are checked, cleaned, and maintained regularly, helping to extend the life of your equipment. By hiring First State Ponds & Fountains, you can rest easy knowing that your pumps, fountains, and filters are functioning smoothly, saving you from costly repairs down the road.
5. Promotes Healthy Aquatic Life
Whether you have fish, turtles, or aquatic plants, a clean pond or fountain is essential to keeping your ecosystem thriving. Excess organic matter in the water can deprive your plants of the necessary nutrients and oxygen. In addition, harmful bacteria from debris and waste can cause health issues for your aquatic life. Regular professional cleaning helps ensure that all aspects of your pond or fountain are balanced, providing a thriving, healthy environment for everything that lives in it. First State Ponds & Fountains specializes in ensuring the overall health of your aquatic ecosystem.
6. Saves You Time and Effort

🚨 June 6th 2024: USA COVID Alert 🚨
Tumblr media Tumblr media
SARS-CoV-2 rates are rising across the USA, especially in the West - mask up to protect yourself and your loved ones.
Remember, the US government is now actively hiding COVID data across Turtle Island, hospitals are rarely testing or masking, and death certificates do NOT list COVID-related complications like heart attacks and strokes. That means we have to rely on public wastewater data (measuring viruses in sewer water), and even that's being suppressed, and everything's on a 2 week delay. So when the numbers we CAN see go up (like the current official 430,000 infections per day), that's just the tip of the iceberg...Right now wastewater numbers are about TWICE AS HIGH AS THEY WERE LAST JUNE, before the US declared the pandemic over.
Tumblr media
These graphs are from wastewaterscan.org and Iowacovid19tracker.org. They collect a lot of local and national data too - look up your own area!
SARS-COV-2 aerosols hang in the air like smoke, and can infect you hours after the contagious person's gone. Keep yourself safe by wearing a well-fitting respirator mask (like N95s or KN95s) whenever you're in CROWDED and COVERED areas, and when CLOSE to people (that includes outside pride events, protest rallies, backyard cookouts, etc). Whenever possible, keep indoors air moving by opening windows, and improve air quality with HEPA air filters (ex. DIY Corsi-Rosenthal box fans).

How To Talk To Your Loved Ones About COVID: COVID.tips
You do NOT want to get COVID-19 if you can avoid it - the initial infection can be nasty, and the long-term effects brutally disabling. Wearing a mask is the quickest and easiest way to break the chain of transmission, and to stand in solidarity with marginalized people fighting to survive across the globe.
Spread the word and take care of each other out there!
[ID 1: Screenshot of IowaCovid19Tracker on June 7th, showing a map of SARS-CoV-2 viral activity in the USA for the last week of May 2024. Hawai'i is blue with the highest "Excessive cases", followed by Wyoming and Utah (red, "Substantial"). New Mexico, Nevada, Florida, Arkansas, Montana, Missouri, Maryland, California, Washington, and Texas are all orange, meaning "Moderate" cases. Most of the Northeast and Alaska are yellow, or "Low", with the remaining states green, or "Minimal." ID 2: Screenshot of WasteWaterScan.org tracker showing data for all sites averaged together as a single line graph. The line starts at late March 2024 to early June, at around 275 parts per million (SARS-CoV-2 nucleic acids found in wastewater samples). It slowly decreases to about 125 per mill by April 21st, then slopes upward jaggedly until it spikes to around 375 at the end of May. ID 3: A screenshot of the WasteWaterScan.org tracker showing data for all sites stacked on top of each other in a line graph, with the lower end of the spectrum having so many blue lines so as to appear almost as a solid color. The graph shows late April to early June, and has the most lines around 200 parts per million, but a good handful of lines extend up to 2400 parts per million. Below the line chart, a historical chart shows a longer view, with peaks in the winter of 2023 and 2024. Looking at the last month or two on that scale, there appears to be an uptick starting in mid May that is about twice as high as the same time in 2023.

Maine Coastal Cleanup - Highlighting the Importance of Beach Cleanups
Tumblr media
The Maine Coastal Cleanup is an environmental initiative that mobilizes communities to address the pressing issue of marine pollution along Maine's coastline. This event is part of the International Coastal Cleanup, a larger global effort organized by the Ocean Conservancy. The Maine Coastal Cleanup is an important initiative that goes beyond picking up trash. It includes a commitment to protecting marine life, preventing ocean pollution, and safeguarding human health while raising awareness about the critical state of our oceans.
The International Coastal Cleanup is one of the world's largest volunteer efforts for ocean health. Since its establishment in 1986, this annual event has brought millions of volunteers from over 100 countries together to collect and document the trash littering their coastlines. Through this initiative, the Ocean Conservancy aims to educate the public and influence policies that address the root causes of marine debris. The data collected during these cleanups provides valuable insights into the sources and types of waste polluting our oceans, which is essential for developing targeted solutions.
Beach cleanups like the Maine Coastal Cleanup are critical for marine life protection. Marine animals often mistake plastic and other debris for food, leading to ingestion and entanglement that can lead to injury or even death. By removing trash from beaches, volunteers directly reduce the risks faced by seabirds, fish, sea turtles, and marine mammals.
Additionally, beach cleanups help conserve the coastline’s natural beauty and ecological integrity. Coastal ecosystems are incredibly diverse and provide crucial bnefits, such as carbon sequestration, water filtration, and serving as nurseries for marine species. Keeping these areas free of debris ensures that they remain healthy and functional.
Preventing ocean pollution is another critical aspect of beach cleanups. Much of the trash collected during these events would eventually end up in the ocean, contributing to the growing problem of marine debris. This pollution harms wildlife and affects human health. Chemicals from plastics and other pollutants can enter the food chain through marine organisms, potentially leading to adverse health effects for people consuming seafood. By intercepting this waste before it reaches the ocean, beach cleanups help protect marine ecosystems and human health.
While the main goal of beach cleanups is to reduce pollution and protect the environment, they also raise awareness about the impact of litter on the environment. Individuals participating in these events can witness the extent of pollution and its detrimental effects. This experience often motivates people to adopt more sustainable practices in their daily lives. Furthermore, educational campaigns and outreach efforts associated with cleanups can influence societal change by highlighting the importance of reducing, reusing, and recycling.
The results of the 2022 Maine Coastal Cleanup have proven how important such initiatives are for the environment. That year, 533 volunteers removed roughly 2,580 pounds of trash from 56 miles of coastline. These efforts cleaned up the coast while providing useful data that was helpful for understanding the sources of marine pollution. Every year, each piece of trash collected is recorded and categorized, contributing to a global database that helps scientists and policymakers understand and combat marine debris more effectively.
The 2024 edition of the Maine Coastal Cleanup will take place from September 7 to September 21, aiming to build on past successes and engage even more volunteers in the fight against marine pollution. The event will once again bring together individuals, families, community groups, and organizations from across the state to clean up the coastline and contribute to the health of the world's oceans.
The Maine Coastal Cleanup is a shining example of how local actions can have a global impact. Volunteers help improve their local environment, while also contributing to a worldwide effort to protect marine life, preserve natural habitats, prevent ocean pollution, safeguard human health, and raise awareness about the importance of clean oceans.
