Picture dump time! These are fan-sketches I made of Dystopian Wars, my latest miniatures wargaming obsession. Turns out, I like boats and I cannot lie. Dystopian Wars (DW) is a steampunk/dieselpunk/atompunk alternate history wargame taking place in the year 187X, where great powers have great technology and lack great responsibility. The pictures are not in chronological order; I started with the Korean crafts, did the Polynesian ships and then the Union Atomic ship, then the Greek page, then the Persian Airships. Koreans and Greeks are going to be in the game, so they're baseless speculation on my part. Polynesians were a fan-thing for the Enlightened faction, and I wanted to include a bit of Solarpunk in the designs. Verdict is still out on that. Persian Airships are ludicrous fantasy on my part, based out of the idea of using an archetypical oil lamp as the hull for an airship. In addition, DW has a strong modularity component to it. Each plastic kit can build one thing out of several options, leading to great flexibility in the kits. The Prussians are the best example; if you don't glue down the bridge and primary weapons, you can just have any ship you could build with that kit. I tried duplicating that effect in sketch form, but with the Persians I got fed up and assembled full images of each variation.

My wife is sick so I have a minute to write some more about a past Lego moc.
I really enjoy writing these posts. I post my build process to instagram but it just feels so hostile to text so I keep my thoughts out of the captions.
Anyway, I built a geobukseon (turtle ship).
Tumblr media
But first, the long roundabout way that I came to build it.
The turtle ship is an icon. I, like many young men, came to know of it playing Age of Empires 2. The “Asian” building style in that game is also iconic, and I spent a lot of time with the Chinese, Koreans, and Japanese. In general, I spend more time with medieval European history, but I have a lot of respect for the empires and people to the East.
I played Ghost of Tsushima and loved it, obviously. I took special notice of the presence of the hwacha. I have had a file in stud.io (a digital lego CAD tool) for a few small siege weapons and one of those was a hwacha (COMICALLY oversized), so I knew I had to build it. This was the seed for a new idea for a new Brikwars army that, despite using Japanese Samurai imagery, would attempt to feature visuals from China and Korea. Korea’s inclusions were the hwacha, some barricades from Kingdom, and later, the turtle ship.
I don’t build a lot of ships. I don’t like ships that much, and as far as Brikwars go they don’t see a lot of action because they require a lot of space and most other players also don’t build ships. The turtle ship wasn’t really on my radar even as I assembled the whole army and expanded it beyond its original mostly Japanese origins.
Then, I watched Hansan: Rising Dragon. It prominently features turtle ships and it was so fun that halfway through the movie I knew I would be building a turtle ship.
There were three major challenges to building a turtle ship out of Lego: the major surfaces are curved, there aren’t a lot of good references, and a faithful recreation would need to make copious use of SNOT (studs not on top) techniques. Other challenges include the odd proportions and shaping.
I tackled the sides first. Each panel needed to be 6 studs wide with a single stud in between. The problem with this is that there isn’t a solid choice for hinge pieces that allow for only one stud for the vertical post between the panels. The panels needed to be connected to their neighbors above and below to be strong enough to withstand play and handling, further complicating the process. The solution was to alternate the width of the panels. Odd numbered panels (the corner doesn’t count) would be 6 studs wide, and the even numbered panels would be 8 and would include the vertical post on either side.
The panels make heavy use of the absolute goat piece 32952 (brick, modified 1x1x1 2/3 with studs on one side). Odd panels need a column on each side and even panels have two columns on each side. The dark tan tiles are connected to these columns to create the ship’s boards. Originally, I was going to use reddish brown for all the woodwork, but it was so monotonous that I decided to use dark tan to highlight the difference in the woodwork direction and function. It also lightens the color palette nicely and makes photography easier.
I’ll talk briefly about the hill because I don’t have many photos of it. The base of the build is made up of pieces used for all of Lego’s official pirate ships, including the round hull pieces on each end. I wanted to use more hull pieces but it made the hull too tall. The “armor” panels need to be pretty low, only about the height of a minifigure off the ”water,” so I couldn’t use them. Instead, the goat 32952 came up clutch to create a SNOT section just two studs in height all the way around.
Tumblr media
Here you can see the curved sections on each end, and as a bonus also a peak at the construction of the side of the hull. The tiles across the side are where the floor will sit.
The lime green pieces are 32952, positioned at an angle to create a slope towards both the prow and the bow (I didn’t look it up so I hope that’s right). The curved slopes were beefed up with plates behind to eliminate the gap that’s very obvious from above. I’m super happy with the geometry of the angles, and it still left an opening for the bull ornament.
Tumblr media
Here’s another shot from above to illustrate the complicated geometry necessary for the shaping. The different width of the side panels requires different sizes of wedge plate. I can’t use normal rectangle plates to anchor the panels or the angles would fail. There are numerous gaps in the floor, all unavoidable, but I’m happy with what I was able to accomplish.
The jigsaw puzzle action of the main floor and the panel floor keeps the shape of the main structure fairly solid. The panels float, but are connected to the hull at the front and back. The corner assembly is serviceable, but so annoying and complicated I didn’t take any photos. Once it was set I put my hands in the air and said “never again.”
Tumblr media
The roof and the dragon. What fun! The dragon was initially taller, and I wanted to be able to have a cannon set inside the mouth. It was too large, though, so I settled for a much smaller piece. The top of the panels I didn’t mess with much. Brackets were utilized to add another tile and then cheese slopes help the transition between panel and roof. The roof is made up of about 60 interconnecting angular sections that hinge outwards. Plates keep each row in place, then clips and handles allow the adjacent row to curve down towards the sides. It’s solid as hell and looks great. The roof is attached via two studs at the front and two more at the rear, and is otherwise supported by sitting on a series of tresses.
The front was originally 3 panels of equal length, and the center panel was a stud ahead of the other two. This was too wide, and the proportions became incredibly silly. I compromised with one long section, and I used jumper plates to create space for a vertical post to allow for three firing positions with the smaller footprint.
Tumblr media
Here’s the detached roof. Reverse tiles on the underside of the roof sit on the dark brown round plates. Here you can also see the 15 cannons and the masts have been added. The sails are the largest aftermarket sails I could find. The historical turtle ship masts are recreated pretty faithfully but there’s no technique I could come up with for accurate sails, but I think the compromise turned out fine.
This was one of the most challenging projects I’ve taken on. It was very technical, but I think it turned out great. I’m so happy with the end result, and I hope you like it as well. Thanks for sticking around to the end. If you like my work I regularly post to @dienekes.hobby on Instagram.

might do the other combos eventually, just was thinking about these fun brother duos..!!

Big man cradles his tiny chihuahua but it’s brains and brawn duo 💕💗
I imagine whenever Raph needs to put Don in time-out he just grabs him and sits. Dee tries to zoom away, but escape is futile. Typically ends with both of them falling asleep. With doodles on their face, ft. Leo and Mikey. (B&B always gets their revenge)

Yall got a little too much faith in leo. this guy is clueless.
first/previous/next
transcript:
Yuichi:
No. Absolutely not.
Leo:
Whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy? Don’t you like me? Aren’t I your best friend?
Y:
Yes, unfortunately. But you really should go home.
Leonardo, why are you here right now?
L:
Isn’t it enough that you get to see my handsome face? You gotta know why too?
Y:
It’s kind of hard when you’re shoving your face into my comforter.
And here’s your chance to make me feel like an asshole for kicking you out.
L:
S’never stopped you before.
I guess I’m like… a girl or whatever.
Y:
Oh. Um. Okay? Congratulations? Did you have another name picked out oooor...
L:
No! Not like that! Its-
I've been a girl this whole time. Apparently, dad just guessed – and everyone else knew! And just didn’t tell me!
And-I know. I know it doesn’t matter – I'm being stupid.
Y:
I mean- that doesn’t sound stupid. Id be upset too.
And I don’t want to tell you… what you’re thinking or feeling. But this seems like some pretty intense dysphoria. So maybe your dad got it right?
And your nesting is obviously not helping, honestly-
L:
My what.
Y:
What do you mean “your what”?
Leo:
reeks of lemon-scented cleaner
Yuichu's hoodie
Donnie's board shorts
Raph's bear
made a nest in his bed
Meme:
Yuichi: this is your hormone level. It's pretty normal for someone turtle-PMSimg. You'll be fine in a week.
Extra 1:
Yuichi: as a lizard owner, clocked Leo's nesting immediately.
Leo: Didn't read Donnie's book, so still clueless.
Extra 2:
Yuichi enters to sitcom clapping and cheering.
