Before there was Gensokyo of Humans or Magician Who Loved a Fake, there was Wholly Red, Ashiyama's self-published doujin series. Originally started in 2015 and still ongoing, with 28 chapters at the moment. A running storyline about tengu society, politics, journalism, office drama & comedy, and what it is to be a youkai. Focused near exclusively on the tengu and their own bubble within Gensokyo, with supporting roles for some of their neighbors.

Excited to finally get around to this. The translation's already done, actually, and the plan is to release a chapter twice per month until we catch up, after which point it'll just be "whenever there's an update".

As most of the series was published in book form first and then split into chapters for the Pixiv release used here, chapters vary a lot in length and each book also has its own story arc to an extent.

I need help writing the league of villains for a fan fiction. Like can you give me tips on to write their dialogue and stuff like that

Thanks for the ask! Here are some things that I think would be helpful, but please be aware that it's my approach to writing the League the way I interpret them. I'm sure there's people who finds my fic wildly inaccurate in terms of characterization. Sometimes I go back months later and disagree with my own stuff, given new information or outlook. You'll have different interpretations than me, and that's okay. And thus,

Tip #1: First of all, it’s fanfic, it’s fun, and it’s yours. You can do whatever the heck you want! It does not matter at all what you do with the characters, their dialogue, their personalities, their relationships, etc. I’ve read plenty of AU fanfics where I could not recognize Shigaraki Tomura/Shimura Tenko, despite the character having the name, but I still liked the story okay. Really, it’s all up to you and what you want. 

That said, to actually answer your question:

Tip #2: Re-read the manga. Read the scanlations - multiple versions from different scanlation groups. Read the official. No version will be perfect, some are better than others (Viz Official has its issues, but it is done by a professional translator and I tend towards it; Fallen Angels (Chapters 1-150s) was the first to scanlate and iirc they even included translation commentary at the end of their chapters; I found mangastream to be more accurate than Jaimini (Chapters 150-250s)), but having a variety of translations will give you insight into the intention of a dialogue, and different ways of achieving it. Read the original Japanese, if you can. 

Tip #2.5: Best way to figure a character, I find, is to describe the panels they’re in as if you’re writing a very plain, objective, impartial image description. Now you have an overview of their outward behavior, their actions, their dialogue. Using that, you have the basis for developing their motivations and personality. It’s the difference between ‘Shigaraki used gamer lingo a few times here, so he is a gamer... therefore he’s obsessed with games and that’s all he does’ and ‘In the first 100 chapters of the story, despite speaking sometimes like a gamer, Shigaraki is actually seen reading newspapers rather than holding a game console’.

Put another way, don’t assume generalized descriptions or traits for a character and write them based on that. You risk writing a trope or archetype or situation rather than the actual character. 

When a loved one dies suddenly, people will be in shock, before sobbing and weeping uncontrollably. That’s generally true, but the character may manifest grief in a different way. Someone close to Toga is killed - what does she do? You can write her breaking down crying, that’s perfectly reasonable. But if you look at the manga, when Twice is killed, she doesn’t cry right away. She gets angry; she lashes out. She’s deeply hurt by his murder, of course! But the tears she sheds for his passing are few in the immediate aftermath - her grief mostly takes the form of slicing Heroes’ throats.

Tip #3: Read everything else, for inspiration, for background knowledge, for tone, for your own gain outside of fandom.

Just the other day, I read Real, the wheelchair basketball manga by Inoue Takehiko. Its three main characters are marginalized by proper society - two because they’re disabled, one because he’s a high school dropout - and there were moments where I was reminded of the League’s situation. In the first chapter, the high school dropout makes a final visit to school where his teachers didn’t think much of him, and his classmates looked down on him. As he leaves, he thinks to himself that everything he does ends in failure and he’s an idiot, all the while he takes a dump at the school gates as a parting gift.

While I can’t see anyone from the League doing that exactly shot for shot, the spirit of it - being seen as a fuck up, being unwanted, being defiant in face of that, even in a inadvisable way - is similar.

Tip #3.5: Another book I’ve read years ago is Codes of the Underworld: How Criminal Communicate. It was very informative, and I think back to it sometimes when I write for the League. 

Criminals face severe constraints on communication imposed by the action of the law, and, unlike the rest of us, cannot easily develop institutions aimed at circumventing them. This central feature of criminal lives makes communication and above all reliable communication exceptionally hard to sustain. For instance, the same secrecy that protects criminals from the law hinders their opportunities to advertise their goods and qualities… In the underworld, moreover, punishments for mistakes and irrational behavior are harsher than they are elsewhere. In the world of regular business, failures of communication can lead to a loss of business, but in the underworld they can result in years behind bars, or worse.

I don’t follow it exactly, because the League is in a children’s fantasy story, and maybe this was obvious but now that it was written out to me, I know how to give the Villains an “edge” to them that a non-Villain might not have, because as Villains, they do often logically would to be secretive and brutal and cautious. Dabi walking around in broad daylight meant their hideout was discovered and All Might literally took down the wall to the bar; a breakdown in negotiations with Overhaul meant Magne dying and Compress getting his arm blown off. 

Tip #4: Related, let the League be assholes, because sometimes they are. Let them be mean and cruel and problematic. Sometimes they’ll be jerks to each other. Nearly all of them grew up in bad circumstances where they probably were not taught important lessons and details about respect and boundaries and being nice. They are definitely not going to be aware of the intricacies of fandom's (oft-American and oft-terminally-online) consensus about problematic behavior. And that’s fine. 

I remember once receiving an ask about why Shigaraki would pull Twice’s mask off in Chapter 224. Wasn’t that terrible of Shigaraki? Yeah, it was. It was also the quickest, most efficient way to get Twice to quit his arguing with the rest of the League, so Shigaraki can announce that they are going to rescue Giran (what Twice was arguing for). After that, he puts the mask back on for Twice. If you ask me, I’d say Shigaraki thinks this evens out - he does something mean that he knows will freak out Twice for a moment, but it’s because he’s arguing for Twice’s side, and he’s putting on the mask back at the end. 

You and I would likely never do something like that because we know taking away someone’s important assistive aid, even for a moment, hurts them and we don’t want to cause them pain for even a second if we could help it/there’s not ‘evening it out’/it demonstrates a power unbalance that perpetuates ableism/there are other ways to stop someone and grab attention/we know not to touch someone even the slightest without permission/etc. But does the character you’re writing know all this? Does he care? Does he think it’s worth following these rules? Does he have time for it, does he have incentives for it, does he have the lucidity, does he think he’s an exception because of this and that, etc, etc. 

A lot of things, most people often just don’t know until they’re taught to be specifically aware. As an example: When I was younger, I knew broadly that taking things without permission was bad; but what if I took these pair of scissors from my friend’s desk and used it and put it back before the owner knew? The owner is my friend. They once told me it was okay to take it, so it counts even today, right? It was just a pair of scissors, a common household item. My friend did not care; still does not care. But knowing what I do now about things like violations of boundaries, explicit consent, the continuation of these concepts for the most trivial and mundane things even in the deepest of friendship or familial ties - I feel the need to ask to use something. That’s me and what I’ve learned through the years, though. It’s probably not going to be [fictional character].

And sometimes the League are just bad people. Shigaraki tried to kill Toga and Dabi at their first meeting. Mr. Compress is seemingly a-okay with kidnapping and murder despite his ancestor being more of a Robin Hood type. Spinner likely knowingly doomed his family to even worse ostracism and harassment from his fantasy-racist hometown when he ran off to join a group of well-televised terrorists. 

That’s also fine. They’re not real. They’re fictional Villains, and you’re temporarily using them as hand-puppets to tell a story. 

Tip #5. For dialogue, it helps knowing what each character’s voice/speaking style sounds like. Some basics:

Shigaraki: 

“Shigaraki speaks with the normal masculine contracted speech, but with a sinister tone. Surprisingly not very cussy. He likes aggravating other people though.”

Caleb Cook notes that Shigaraki talks like an overgrown kid. (In comparison to ReDestro, who “uses more SAT words, since he’s had a formal education.”)

He can be a sarcastic smartass.

Kurogiri:

“Kurogiri is Extremely Polite”

He only refers to Shigaraki as ‘Shigaraki Tomura’. Always the full name, always just that.

He speaks very formally and respectfully; however, there is also a nastier side to him that comes out when he faces off Heroes: Saying to All Might, “I can't say I like the idea of having blood and guts inside my gate, but… if they're yours, I’ll happily oblige.” (Chapter 18); mocking Eraserhead and Mic when they're being sad over him, “Have you mistaken this place for a confessional of some kind?” (Chapter 254)

Dabi: 

“Dabi is like Shoto but ruder, though not to Bakugo’s extent”

He calls people names: Toga most often, as 'crazy'; he called Spinner 'lizard' once; when he first met Shigaraki, he said 'gross'.

Note that all the examples above are people younger than him; as far as I know, Dabi refrains from name-calling his allies who are older than him: Compress, Twice, Skeptic.

He inexplicably politely calls Ujiko ‘Ujiko-san’.

Compress:

“Compress is kind of like Sero. He’s got that trickster tone to him. Gets rougher when things don’t go his way.”

Likes to call himself an ‘old man’ at age 32; talks like an older gentleman as well. 

Twice: 

Twice contradicts himself a lot. Generally, he says one thing, his alter then says the opposite of that immediately afterwards. 

However, when things are urgent or serious, his alter’s speech fades. See Chapter 148, when he confronts Shigaraki about the Overhaul plan - he spills out his feelings with no contradiction. See Chapter 224, after they find out Giran’s been kidnapped - when arguing with the League about whether to say Giran, he’s completely coherent. 

Twice argues back with the alter sometimes, rather than the alter simply blurting out the opposite of what he says. 

After he gets over his clone trauma, the alter seemed to have…integrated into himself? He still speaks in contradictions, but less so, and it doesn’t seem to be a separate voice speaking out involuntarily

Spinner: 

“Spinner also speaks the normal masculine contracted speech like Kirishima and Kaminari, but he talks like Tokoyami during the Forest Lodge arc because he’s a Stain chuuni.”

An average, normal guy, compared to the rest of the League: not very polite, but not particularly rude; no great wit or affect (after he stops being a Stain fanboy), but not unintelligible; game references infrequently.

Giran: 

“Giran is also like speaks the normal masculine contracted speech similar to Shoto, but he’s a lot more mature.”

He calls Shigaraki “Shigaraki-san”, being polite towards him as a customer. 

He calls Twice by his last name, ‘Bubaigawara’, likely because they seem to be friends beyond just business. 

Toga: 

Toga is a generally polite girl, talks like a teenager. 

She can be bad at explaining herself! Seems to forget the people are lacking context for the things she says. “Hey, my best friend Jin just got killed by a Hero, which makes me sad, as well as worried that I'm going to be cut down like nothing as well, especially because I've been told how abnormal I am, even though I think I'm a normal person just like you, because I have emotions like love and fear, as any regular human does, and that lifetime of repression has hurt me.” -> Whatever she actually says to Uraraka in Chapter 289.

Only Toga uses first names with honorifics with the other League members. This is her being cute and desiring familiarity, but still polite.

　◦ Shigaraki is ‘Tomura-kun’

　◦ Dabi is, at first ‘Dabi-kun’; after she finds out he’s Touya, he’s ‘Touya-kun’ 

　◦ Spinner is ‘Spinner-kun’

　◦ However, Mr. Compress is simply ‘Mister’ 

Conversely, only Mr. Compress and Twice call her ‘Toga-chan’. All the 20-somethings dudes call her just ‘Toga’. 

*Note what the League calls each other. They all call each other using Villain names. If the male members of the League are using first names and honorifics for each other, they’ve either gotten extremely close and intimate and weirdly polite, or they’re being possessed by AFO. 

Tip #5.5. Instead of fretting over writing good dialogue right away, just write whatever you need to get a scene over with. You can go back later to change the tone and speaking style of the sentence.

Here’s a line I had for Dabi at first: 

“Whatever hospital he works at should be shut down for incompetency in background checks.”

Wayyy too formal. Here’s the line after I went back and fixed it:

“Whatever hospital he works at should be shut down for being shit at background checks.”

Still not my best shot, but better. Sometimes all you need is just to change a word. 

Tip #6. Humor. The League is ridiculous and hilarious. Always try to have fun with their interactions and antics.

Hello !! If I may ask, how did you get a hold of the Animate Label Fair extra, and all of the other extras ? Have you bought several copies of Sleeping Dead from several shops to get all these or ?

Also, when you say MTL translation, you mean machine/AI translation, isn't it ? Do you or not speak Japanese ? 👀 (My apologies if this is too nosy, I'm obsessed with Sleeping Dead since reading it and you certainly have the most posts in the tag ... and it sound like you got digital copies of the Sleeping Dead book and has read it even as the scanlation, to my understanding, is still on going ?)

(I'm French and we've been blessed with an official translation and release here, so that's how I've already read the entirety of it myself~)

First off I am very envious France got an official translation so quickly 😁. English publishers are lagging so badly, I have no idea if we’d just get a digital release or anything at all!

I was able to get the animate label fair extra on Yahoo Auction Japan with a shopping service. I wound up buying the first volume twice - when it first came out, and another copy with the second volume. The extras for v1 were reprinted when the second volume came out, so I pre-ordered them together. There are two more extras from v2 that were pre-order exclusive, but they don’t appear very often on secondhand sites:

I used the website/app Honto to buy the digital version. The group translating has rips but I only found a download for volume 1 so far.

As for the translations, I use AI/machine translation with an online dictionary. I was able to take Japanese for a year in college, so I can read hiragana and katakana with some understanding of sentence structure. I went back and fixed a few scans that were from before I took the classes because there were a lot of mistakes. I’m nowhere near fluent, so I would take anything I post as a translation with some skepticism.

It's been a thriving time as a One Piece fan these last few weeks; Live Action's delivering, anime is serving, and we had that meaty cliffhanger with Luffy and Kizaru now to pick up on

A Jinbe cover this time, for a moment I got excited thinking it was a cover story to explain how he escaped Whole Cake

We instead pick up after Kuma, still running wild on Marejois

But Akainu is here now, though he is getting slandered by the Celestial Dragons, calling for Kuma's death and what they will do about the loss of food

STOP PUTTING HOLES IN PEOPLE WE LIKE AKAINU!!!!

Gave Kuma the Whitebeard face treatment

Kuma paws out of dodge, but not before getting his foot singed

Akainu does mull over telling Bonney that Kuma gave up his mind on his own volition, and wondering as much as we are what the end goal is for Kuma

Back on Egghead, the Mark 3s are sadly killing all the sea beasties, allowing the marines to get to the Fabriophase (ground floor of the island)

Luffy meanwhile is hitting Kizaru in Snakeman

Kizaru is at least giving his strength props, asking why he is defending Vegapunk, but Luffy hits back on the uno reverse: why does he wanna kill Vegapunk?

Kizaru dude he can't hear you from way over there

He says 'I don't want to kill him' but also 'don't get in my way', hmmm?

Speed is weight indeed, but Kizaru needed one hell of a run-up to hit Luffy

Vega Force 1 NOOOOOOOO! The impact sends Luffy flying, including through the giant bot and means of escape

Kizaru then starts being his usual self towards Bonney now, implying he knew her when she was younger and trying to appeal to her connection to Kuma to justify killing Vegapunk

Bonney tries to attack, but Kizaru dodges and kicks her into the barrier

Franky goes to attack but Kizaru's already left, so he quickly goes to contact Usopp

The three Punks have succeeded in breaking York's code, but their joy is cut short by Kizaru's appearance

And like he's right there, chilling between Punk and Usopp

Kizaru takes one last lament before going to complete his mission

But Giant Gear Fifth Luffy with the grab, complete with surrounding characters eyeball popping again

I guess Nami's still not used to Gear Fifth because this is the second time she's eye popped from seeing him, it's Usopp and the Punks' first time up close at least

Luffy looks beat up, but it seems to be because he crossed the barrier twice, maybe he went back for Bonney?

I think we all would've liked to see more of Luffy vs Kizaru, but perhaps Oda doesn't want to make the admirals look weakened. Still Kizaru held his own against Yonko-tier Luffy, granted it was only Gear Fourth but it still increases Admiral stocks.

The Kuma stuff is still interesting, and I still want that flashback, but we are all in the dark about his current agenda, it's just heartbreaking that his body is becoming even more damaged at this point, since we want there to be a chance to save him and for Bonney to get her father back.

Kizaru may be playing a bit of a con here, it might be the scanlations, but honestly if he wanted to kill Vegapunk I feel like Vegapunk would already be dead, no posturing or chatting, perhaps he was giving his opponents time to stop him? Who knows. I doubt he can stay in Luffy's grip forever, I mean Haki of course will keep him from slipping out but with Sanji grabbing Nami's bubble gun there will need to be a new means of containment right?

Speaking of, his absence possibly means he's fighting with Zoro? Jinbe, Chopper and Robin's absences remain noted too, what are they up to?

But with the Vega Force 1 destroyed, opportunity arises with the ancient robot. Giant Luffy's heartbeat activating it does lean into the 'Joy Boy was a giant' theory, but the fact that the drums activated it is interesting, is music its infinite power source? How capable is this ancient kingdom bot too compared to the Vega Force 1 in terms of the escape plan, I mean the Sunny isn't in position yet either, more questions to stack on, but another enticing chapter.

WHY

Working on asks and also the next chapter post today, but I just skimmed the official release, and I really have to ask why there is a mass conspiracy between the leak summary people, the early fan translators, the scanlation team, and Caleb Cook to collectively ignore the death kanji in Toga's Sad Man's Parade.

Maybe I'm just primed to notice it because I've been calling this whole concept - Toga using Twice's blood to whip out one last infinite doubles attack for the road, thus thematically invalidating Hawks' justifications for murder - Dead Man's Parade for the entire two and a half years it's been since Twice's death. But seriously. Seriously.

“We have to kill him! Now!” or how claiming you want to murder someone might change the game

There has been a lot of discussion on how Hawks’s words had been a disappointment for a part of the fandom because they seem to show he didn’t really change his mindsetting from when he killed Jin.

(By the way, I know the official translation used ‘Kill THEM! Right now!’ but Hawks said ‘Soitsu o korose! ! Imasugu! !’そいつを殺せ！！今すぐ！！And ‘soitsu’ (そいつ/其奴) means “that person”, “that guy”, “that fellow”, “that one” [其= “That” 奴= “a thing”, “an object”; (derogatory, familiar) “a person”], so it should be singular and therefore I’m using the translation used in the scanlations... even if yes, I guess Hawks wouldn’t be adverse to kill Touya either...)

On the other side I wonder if this couldn’t turn out into something more than that, another factor that would affect the tide.

Heroes aren’t supposed to kill people. It’s something that’s well known to the public and to the kids, in fact, when Hawks killed Jin, he had to explain his reasons to the public. People were worried with other pressing matters (their own safety), so they didn’t really care Jin, a villain, died, but still Hawks was asked to explain his reasons, to justify himself and apologize because heroes aren’t supposed to kill people.

The kids know as well. When Ending is all but begging Endeavour to kill him, the kids capture him alive, insisting NO ONE will die on their watch and, likely, they’re still in the same mindsetting.

During the Paranormal Liberation War Arc the situation was dire and, when the war ended, the kids were dealing with so many heavy stuff (the pain for Midnight’s death, the destruction they witnessed and then the disappearance of Midoriya) that they likely didn’t dwell much on how Hawks took a life nor knew Jin so they just accepted his explanation that he had no better option and decided not to think at it.

There’s something else figuring into the equation.

During the Paranormal Liberation War Arc Tokoyami happened to witness Jin’s body and hear from Touya how Hawks killed Jin, how the Pros’ hands are dirtier than the ones of the Villains. Tokoyami’s expression was shocked when he heard Hawks stabbed Jin [Chap 271]. But then Hawks wakes up and calls him and Tokoyami focuses solely on protecting Hawks, whom Touya had badly injured.

Tokoyami has a bond with Hawks, whom he respects. We can see that Dark Shadow has tears in his eyes when he notices how badly burned Hawks’ back so it makes sense Tokoyami focused on protecting him (and himself as, although Touya didn’t immediately attack him, Tokoyami could have still felt threatened by him for the mere fact Touya was a villain using fire, against which Dark Shadow is weak) and simply pushed in a dark corner of his mind what Touya said.

However now Hawks is yelling to kill ‘Twice’ or better Himiko transformed in Twice, right now. He’s not making attempts to persuade her to stop or ‘help her atone for her crimes’.

Yeah, undoubtedly slaughtering all the Villains would be an ‘easy’ way to end the war because dead people don’t fight wars, but the kids had been fighting so far thinking they could STOP the villains, without getting so far as to kill them. An hero saves, not murders, this has been so far the theme of the story (unless Horikoshi plans to change it).

Being now pushed into a situation in which they’re asked to murder someone, Himeko being a girl a year older than them and Touya being Shouto’s brother, might cause them to falter.

Ochako had heard Himiko ask her what did she want to do with her, if she wanted to kill her and express her grievance toward Jin’s death but it was easy to ignore it when she believed no one wanted to kill Himiko and she was the only one going around murdering people, Jin’s death being merely an ‘unfortunate accident’ she didn’t think too deeply about.

If she will also hear Hawks telling them to murder her she might end up being forced to truly think at the situation from Himiko’s perspective, a perspective in which the villains who stole lives and other people’s happiness are actually the heroes who instead were sworn to save lives.

Tokoyami might be reminded about what Touya said and hesitate, vondering if, as Touya said, heroes really have more blood on their hands than villains and he was always blind to this.

Also, I’ve no doubt All for One will try to exploit the moment because All for One knows heroes pride themselves for not being murderers, for being better than villains so yeah, Hawks’ words should feel like a Christmas present to him to further taunt heroes but, while it’s true he does what he does for his own sick purposes, his words often hit way too close to the mark and might push forward more reflection into the kids.

So yeah, while Hawks’ words can end up throwing the kids into emotional chaos, maybe, in the long run, they might be what will cause things to change, forcing the kids to ponder on things and rejecting the idea that murder is the sole option and decide that it’s possible to stop a person by saving said person as well.

But well, we’ll see.

While I'm happy for the author I'm very sad that He Was My Brother got picked up for professional translation because now I will probably have to wait more than a year for the translation to catch up to where the scanlation was.

14 Newest and oldest manga you read

The newest was prooobbbabbly some stupid one shot I came across and don't remember but the one I'm actually following is Takatora Kun to Omega Tachi, which started publishing in 2022 apparently. The oldest was probably Maya No Souretsu (1972)

20 Drop your 2024 reading list (if u have any)

I really want to read Land of the Lustrous but it's not at my library and the fan translation is... bad... so we'll see. I want to re-read and finish Blood on the Tracks. Finally read the Memoirs of an Amorous Gentleman which I downloaded. I also would love to read Angel Sanctuary and Ikoku Nikki.

20 mensou is all over the place with age and grade inconsistencies and I can’t tell if it’s just errors in the English version or if it’s there in the original because I don’t own it in Japanese to be able to check

like there’s the stuff where it keeps saying Akira’s a 3rd grader until he’s suddenly changed to being in 4th grade and I’m fascinated to know if that was in the original Japanese version as well. These are from the start of the manga and the Christmas chapter:

The way the story goes from summer into summer of next year he really SHOULD move up a grade but it would also mean Nokoru has to move up into middle school and Utako has to move up into first grade. But this never happens so it’s like they’re just collectively doing the same grade year again??

It would’ve made some sense to start with Akira in 3rd grade and have him enter 4th in April but his birthday chapter would need to be changed to being about his 9th birthday instead of his 10th.

Speaking of birthdays, Utako seems to turn 6 twice at least according to the English release. The birthday where the ice sculpture is stolen is specifically said to be her sixth birthday.

But then later on during Akira’s birthday chat with his dad who is disguised as Santa, he’s asked how old Utako is and in the English version he says she’ll be turning six, not that she’s already six.

Again, curious to see the original Japanese for that too. Either way if she was 6 in the first birthday she would be turning 7 in the second one despite still being in kindergarten so really the first one ought to have been her 5th and then we would see her 6th later. Also, probably more of a translation thing here, but the English release says that Ryusuke is a sophomore, so in his 2nd year of high school (which would make sense at a glance since he’s stated to be 16) but online on Japanese sources I’ve seen him stated to be in first year.

His birthday is in April so that actually does make sense if he entered first year still 15 and then turned 16. There are bits of old fan scanlations of 20 Mensou floating about that I’ve seen that translated the Ryusuke profile to say he was in ‘tenth grade’ which aligns with 1st Year high school. So I assume the original Japanese says he’s in 1st Year and the English version got it wrong;;;

i was reading ousama ranking and really enjoying it and i was gonna write up a whole post (well, you know, just the kind of post i write, nothing special) and i started watching the anime too and then i realized. that the whole manga has not been translated yet. i thought it was only up to chapter 69... but there's nearly twice as many... i noticed because the anime suddenly caught up to the manga with many episodes left. now i can't do my preferred thing of catching up with the manga before watching the whole anime... do i keep watching and let the story get revealed to me through the anime first instead of the manga??? i never do that!

oh shit, the official translation was put on hold because the translator was stealing from scanlations... although if it's a good and accurate translation of what is being said, then to call it "plagiarism" is very iffy. like maybe that's just what was being said and they translated it right. however apparently it also contained mistakes and mistranslations, both of which are not permissible, least of all when copied. anyway probably everyone but me already knows this. anyway so i can't get the official translation beyond chapter 69 either is what i'm being told here. :(...

How To Break Into The Manga/Light Novel Industry - Notes!

Manga is doing really well in the American market right now. According to Bookscan (NPD.com), manga sold about 26.69 million copies in 2021, with 10.99 million copies having been sold this year (2022) so far (I believe the date this number was pulled was from May or June).

Some of the biggest names in the US-based part of this field right now are VIZ Media, Seven Seas, Yen Press (and their new imprint IZE Press), Kodansha, DENPA, and the like. There are also a lot of other names to consider, like J-Novel Club, VAST Visual & J-18 Publishing, Star Fruit Books, and more.

What are some of the things you need to get into this industry?

Realistically, translating is essential for most of this work. You need to know some part of the language and--if possible--the culture to be in this industry. Not every publisher will require this, but on the editorial side, it is good to have this as a skill set. (J-Novel Club, for example, does not require you to know the Japanese; Kodansha, however, does require you to be able to read full volumes in Japanese.) NOTE: You do not need a JLPT Score. It's nice to have but not necessary to prove skill.

In fact, the majority of the panelists started off in translating and recommended freelance translating as a means to enter the field. Quality Control (or, QC) is also a great point of entry--such as proofreading copy.

Sometimes translators will be asked to provide a portfolio. Portfolios can be sampled from raws (with a note that this was privately used—though please do NOT use scanlations or share work you've done for a scanlation team).

Portfolios are generally a necessity, particularly for translators. You can use raws, or you can even ask the authors directly for permission to translate their work, like on Twitter. If you have author permission and can prove it, this would be a huge boost to your application. Any experience you might have in this regard is also a plus.

Resumes are also necessary (just remember that they should be one page, not more!).

Creative Writing is a plus too.

Following-up: If you don't hear anything, you can follow up (really, try to do so only once or twice over the course of a week or two).

If you have questions, ask them. And, if you are rejected for the job, always ask for feedback. Making those improvements before applying again or at another location can help get you into this industry too.

As a final note: it is always better to overmark than undermark and explains editorial decisions made while translating or taking an edit test. Helping the test reviewers understand your thinking and process takes out the guesswork. Though on that note: if something is not there--don't correct it yourself. Note it and tell the editor (this is for letterers, translators, and proofreaders).

Signs of how much my computer storage has grown over time... I just bought my 3rd passport drive. The original is a 2TB I bought out of a Christmas gift card back in Dec 2014; at the time it was twice the size of the disk drive in my PC, ditto my laptop, which meant I could swap it back and forth to backup files from both on one device.

That old PC is now kaput, and the only thing the old laptop gets used for is to on very rare occasion watch a movie while I do something on the much newer gaming laptop. The original passport drive was still my backup device of choice, though it’s good I’m doing a selective backup (using a robocopy batch) as my current laptop has 4TB of SSD space installed, so twice its capacity. I also have a second passport drive (also 2TB, bought a year ago) that I backup stuff to monthly and keep in my emergency go-bag.

Note that was. A couple days ago I finally got around to buying and installing Cyberpunk 2077, in all it’s 70-ish GB of glory. Which tipped the old passport drive from coping to noping.

So I’ve bought a 3rd passport drive, since so far I’m pleased with their performance. There was a mere $10CAN difference between getting a 4TB and a 5TB, so naturally I’ve gone for the 5TB. Hopefully it’ll be another almost-a-decade before I again have way too much stuff trying to backup to that (though I’m not going to be surprised it it ends up less).

Meanwhile, I’m kicking myself for only buying a 2TB drive last year, since obviously it’s going to run into the same not-enough-space problem the next time I go to do monthly backups at the beginning of August. I figure I’ll have to take my existing backup batch and copy it off into two different batches, setting up one to backup all my media (music, movies, ebooks, and manga scanlations) to one drive and the other to backup everything else (mostly games and personal documents) to the other, and keep two passport drives in the go bag. And moving forward edit two batches any time I need to add a new line to the main backup batch (such as where to find the save or mod files or screenshot locations for new games, since those end up all over the place and not necessarily within locations already covered by the batch).
