Tumblr media
I'm interested :3
YES BAE OFCC 😋😋
Tumblr media
also ima use this post to say im sorry for being inactive i just took a quick break from my phone after shit went down irl but its all good now! 😝
Anyways MY SPIDERSONA :
Name : Astra
Age : 15
height : 5’6
race : Black carribean
ethnicity : Bajan / Hatian
Hometown : Greenwich, London
Nationality : British
Speaking languages : French, English.
Bit of backstory :
She lives in a tiny apartment In south east london, with her mum. Who she doesn’t even recognise anymore. Her father left her and her mother for another woman when she was 4 years old. Everything was fine before then though? no arguments, no divorce notices? no not getting along? it was just… normal. Until he packed up and left, and she just watched him with the two huge bags in his hands. Packed with everything he owned.
While her mother sobbed and begged for him to stay, astra did nothing except watch him walk away, treating her mother like a street beggar.
It beats her up to this day. The way she just observed one of the people she was meant to look up to walk out of her life just like that.
It wasn’t easy trying to adapt to life as a single mother, so the same way her husband walked away she was made to think astra did too. She just reminded her more and more of the person who ruined her life.
So she turned to drinking and taking drugs. And again astra just watched. She just watched yet another person walk out of her life and did nothing, though you couldn’t really blame her she was 4. But its still engraved in her mind like an old television stuck on replay, it haunted her.
Now her mother was unrecognisable, lost in the shadows of drugs and alcohol. Waiting day by day for her husband to miraculously come back, so that they could go back to the life they used to live.
But it never happened.
So Astra grew up on her own, and every night she’d go for a walk outside. And gazed interestingly at the stars. Since she believed that maybe, one day a shooting star would fly past her. And one day bring her dad back home.
Thus the name Astra.
Spider bite :
After a long history of looking at stars from afar she worked hard and made up enough money to buy herself a traditional telescope.
One day while she was looking at the stars a spider crawled down the telescope onto her hand and bit her, i might go into detail with this laterr
Interesting facts :
She enjoys stargazing of course, she believed her father was a shooting star. And maybe he would turn up again! (yeah he never did)
She plays sports (sometime) : Volleyball and badminton. But not competitively, just for funsies with her friends. Mostly in school during PE or acter school clubs. (friends dragged her into it but it was fun the first time so she just gave in)
She enjoys crochetinggg 😝 (never finishes her pieces.) There could be like 4 unfinished works under her bed and she just started a new one (me.) she picked up crocheting from her mother, and does it in her spare time.
She used to cook with her mom but now she just cooks by herself, doesn’t mind it though. The music blasting in her ears is all she needs😻 (until she accidentally cuts her finger off.)
Yeah this is what i had in my notes its not a lot but ima add onto itt 😋

Skts + desi trans (MTF) Atsumu, transphobia & comfort
Kiyoomi knocked on the door, waiting for Atsumu to reply, but there was no answer in return!
Atsumu had asked him to wait outside; she was confused between two outfits she wanted to wear for her cousin's wedding, and Kiyoomi, who would tell her she looked like the most beautiful person even when she was wearing her old torn clothes, was the judge!

Kiyoomi had been waiting outside for more than half an hour, and with every passing minute, his tension was increasing. He knocked on the door again, calling out to her.

"Atsu? Baby, are you done?"
"Love? Are you okay?" He called out again, debating whether to break it. He heard the click of the door, and instead of Atsumu putting on a fashion show for him as she usually does, she ran towards her bed, hid under the blanket, and blew her nose, throwing out the tissue paper and screaming.

"Omiomi, I'll pick it up laterr, promise!"

Kiyoomi groaned, but this was not the time to get disgusted; Atsumu had a running nose, and the only reason she could have one was if she had cried! And Kiyoomi had promised himself never to see tears come in Atsumu's eyes; whoever had caused this should better be prepared; Kiyoomi would take Atsumu's revenge!
Atsumu's outfits were laid out perfectly, with jewellery still in their boxes, the makeup products untouched, and a half mehendi cone lying with stained tissue papers beside it!

Kiyoomi sat down besides Atsumu, gently caressing her arm and sliding the chocolate he found on the side table inside the blanket, hoping it would get her out, and it did!

Atsumu grins as she slowly comes out like a tortoise and gives Omi her prettiest smile. Kiyoomi's hand immediately went towards her face, wiping down the wetness from her cheek.

"Are you okay, darling?" He asked once Atsumu had finished eating. Atsumu looked hesitant but gave up once she saw the determination on his face. Kiyoomi was not going to give this up.
Sighing, Atsumu showed Kiyoomi her mehendi, stained hands.

"Well, I wanted to try some nice designs! Mehendi would look soo good with these outfits, so i decided to try, checked some YouTube videos- IN THAT THE LADY DOES IT SOO QUICKLY AND EASILY!! BUT- but when I went to try- well, it was a disaster, like, I can't even draw a straight linee!" Atsumu cried,

"When I was a kid, I always wanted to put mehendi on, but you know, no one would let me EXCEPT that one time Rima-
My cousin..... The BRIDE" Atsumu continued as Kiyoomi nodded, finally understanding.

"Now where was I-haa, except that one time Rima practised on my hand and told everyone that it was a tattoo art, I wanted to surprise her, with a similar design, but it's just too muchh" She sulked

Kiyoomi chuckles as he gets up and searches for something.

"HEY! DON'T LAUGH AT ME ITS A VERY SERIOUS MATTER OMI!!"

'Did you know, love? The 15-year-old Kiyoomi wanted to be a tattoo artist. He wanted Tattoos all over his body, small, big, large, tattoos of every size, with small intricate details that he was convinced no one else could ever do, so he practised, practised on paper, practised with pens with different kinds of pens, practised on his body till he was decent in it, so um, do you want me to channel that Kiyoomi? He will do some decent work!" he asks with a sweet smile, sitting back down.

Atsumu giggles as she nods her head and starts showing the design she wanted.
Kiyoomi paid attention to every little detail; all the flowers matched, and all the dots were perfectly aligned!

"You're giving some serious competition to the mehndi wali didi, Omi!" Atsumu giggles, poking his thigh with her toes.

"That mehendi wali dhidhi-"
"DI-DI"
"Yes, mehendi wali didi! She is no one in front of me!" Kiyoomi smirks

"But wait, why didn't you get your mehendi done from her, babe? I remember seeing you sitting over there!"
Atsumu goes quiet; she really didn't want to remember all that, but she knew Kiyoomi wouldn't let it go, so she made him give a promise.

First, you promise me you won't do anything!"
"Atsumu, what happened?'"

Fuck, he took her full name, NOT GOOD.

"Omi- first promise me! Otherwise, Im not going to tell you ANYTHING," she stressed.

"Atsumu-"
"NO! Promise me first!" She says, putting her palm forward.

Reluctantly, he promised, He can ask for forgiveness later!

"Okay so, so you know how she is, no?"
"Who?"
"Aunty, Rima- rima's mother, how she, well, quite literally outed me in front of everyone? I told you about her, no." Atsumu whispered

"Did she do anything?" Kiyoomi asked worriedly.

"Nothing special, she was doing what she normally does, telling everyone around her how I used to be such a 'nice boy, how I have spoiled the 'Khandan ki izzat' nonsense, how she doesn't want to involve my mom and Samu because of my 'influence' and other things. I usually take it, Omi, but then she started speaking badly about you, Ma, and Samu, and that was something I couldn't take, so I just got up and left. I really didn't want to create a scene; I know how important this is to Rima, and I wanted to be there for her, Omi! But I just couldn't!" Atsumu cried; she didn't want to, but the tears just started rolling down her face.

"You know, when I was a child, she was my favourite aunt! She would always buy me things! Would always take my side whenever I used to cause some trouble! Uhh who knew the one who loved me the 'most' would suddenly want me dead-"

"Atsumu, you know you don't have to tolerate this! I can book the next flight tickets and-"

"Omi, you promised!"

"But Atsu!"

"I want to stay, Omi! I want to stay for Ma, I want to stay for Samu, I want to stay for Rima! AND I WANT TO STAY FOR US! I don't want anyone to think of us- of me as someone different! I want everyone to know that they can't break me. I mean, it does hurt sometimes, but because of that, I have become stronger! NOW DONT CRY OMI-OMI." Atsumu squeals, wiping down the tears running down Kiyoomi's face!

"And ANYWAYS! This is the last function with Aunty; after Rima, only two people are left to get married: me and Samu, and I don't think we are going to call her! She put me through lots of trauma and gave Ma and Samu unnecessary tension! No one is going to call her! So now it's just a matter of bearing her for a few days!" She continues, giving him a small peck on the lips.

"Now Stop crying and finish the mehendi, Omi!" Otherwise, it will dry! And it will be a mess!"
"Yes ma'am!"
"And after this, you have to dress me up in the saree!"
"WHAT!? WAIT BABE-"
"OMI! My hands will be full of mehendi! You want me to spoil my beautiful saree?"
"But how will I?"
"YOUTUBE!"
"YOUTUBE?"

It took him an hour to wrap the saree and another hour to figure out the jewellery, and the day ended with them going on a small 'watching the sunset' date that Kiyoomi had planned for his precious Girlfriend!

Well, the aunty somehow ended up with her face coloured with pakka colour on the Haldi day, and no one could figure out who did it. In the distance, Kiyoomi and Osamu just drank the chaas that was being served, and Atsumu, at the side showing Rima her mehendi, all four of them totally unbothered by the chaos!

A Biloxi man was sentenced to 30 years in prison for the sexual battery of two children, District Attorney W. Crosby Parker announced Wednesday in a press release.
Laterrance Nathan, 43, pleaded guilty to two felony charges in court earlier this week before Judge Christopher Schmidt imposed the sentence.
Nathan molested two girls — ages 14 and 15 — over a period of several months in 2019, Parker said in the release. The victims did not initially come forward because they feared Nathan.
That changed in May 2020 after one of the girls learned she was pregnant. DNA testing confirmed Nathan as the father.
“The victims in this case have shown an unbelievable amount of strength through this difficult time,” prosecuting Assistant District Attorney Alison Baker said in the press release. “Children don’t always tell immediately when abuse is going on, especially when it occurs at the hands of a friend family member, or other trusted adult.”
Nathan will not be eligible for early release or parole.

3 main leads time
So our three main characters are Nix, Kassi, and Abbigale
I’ll start with Nix! Nix firstly is a TRANS WOMAN AND I LOVE HER. She’s around 30, kinda snarky and sarcastic, kinda a pessimistic but cares a lot about the people she cares about. She’s also an alcoholic though is trying to quit. Her childhood wasn’t the greatest, she lived in the sky kingdom, raised by her paranoid mother who was terrified of the outside world. So Nix like never went outside for like 16 years of her life isolated with her mom. Until one day she ran away to join the Sky kingdom military, she was a rather good recruit especially since she wasn’t religious which was one of the things the military was trying to get rid of. As they want a more technology based society. During this time, a lotta things happened to her, Nix met her first partner, Polly Loliet (Real name Penelope Lawrence) A Stage performer and high class gambler. She was hella rich and the DEFINITION of a bimbo. The two met eachother at a bar with the rest of Nix’s military squad. Nix in a gay panic offered Polly a gambling bet. The bet was that if Nix won, Polly would have to give Nix her number. If Polly won than Nix would pay a month’s worth of her salary. Nix, however won that. Not by actually winning but because Polly purposely lost so she could give Nix her number.
The two started talking and eventually started dating. Though eventually the two decided they weren’t right for each other and broke up. Though they’re still friends. During this Nix got into a little accident. An accident that rendered her blind in her left eye, and giving a nasty scar as well. (Which I’ll get into later :)) Now after this Nix started to notice how corrupt and just awful the government was getting. (Along with a certain incident I’ll get into laterr) It kept bubbling within her but she wouldn’t do anything until she met Kassi. During a mission to the Moon Kingdom, she met the Elf and the two instantly hit it off. They became friends and eventually Nix started sneaking out just to see them. The two slowly fell in love and decided that they were sick of their current lives, and wanted a change. A change with eachother. So one day the two met up and ran away down to the earth Kingdom, which was directly under the Sky kingdom (the sky kingdom is obviously in the sky and the earth kingdom is directly under them) So the two ran away together, and because bounty hunters. Doing tasks and other jobs for the people of the Earth kingdom.
OH OH here’s some quotes from her as well
“Maybe the gods do exist. But that doesn’t mean I believe in them. Because they’ve never believed in me, they made my life hell and for what? To make me stronger? I think that’s bullshit. Why should you believe in a god if they don’t give a shit about you?”
“The day I met them, Kassi, they changed my life. I’ve never met someone so wonderful and amazing, someone who radiates happiness wherever they go. If I never met them…I don’t know what I’d do.”
“I don’t give a shit about what you want, I came here to do what’s right, and I’m gonna do that no matter what.”
“Trust is weird, you can trust the most awful people, even when you know they’re awful you can still trust them, but that doesn’t make you stupid. It just means you need to be careful. And there’s nothing wrong with being careful, if we didn’t do that, we’d all be 6 feet under.”
“Kid I may be an adult but that doesn’t mean I know shit, I don’t know anything, most adults don’t. The sooner you realize that the better.”
ONTO KASSI NIX’S PARTNER
Kassi is Nonbinary!! Around 28! They live in the Moon kingdom raised by their TWO GAY DADS. Their life was normal and comfortable, so they were hesitant to leave at first but they did want a change, a chance at a different life. A more exciting life. So when they went with Nix they just couldn’t refuse, plus they REALLY liked her sooo
They make potions! Healing, strength, you name it! Theyve got them all! Elvs are naturally skilled at making them after all.
They’re rather bubbly and positive. But can be a trickster when needed. They love Nix with all their heart, and will do anything to protect them.
Here’s a few quotes :)!
“Well, here’s how I see it! We get to choose our hair color, choose how we dress, what we eat! What we do with our lives! If we can choose all that, I think choosing your gender isn’t that shocking.”
“Aw don’t look too sad! Nix’s is just grumpy! *And probably hungover—* Don’t take it too personally! She might not admit it but she’s a sweetheart deep down!”
“Well, you have a choice. You can either sit here and cry your eyes out. Wondering what couldve been for the rest of your life, or you can get up and do something about it! And make things right! I know what I’m gonna do!”
“I trust Nix. And I trust her a lot more than I trust you, the choice us yours but don’t say we didn’t warn you.”
they’re the definition of “My wife is a bitch and I love her so much”
ABBIGALE!!!! OUR LAST OF THE TRIO
Abbigale is unfortunately cis /j she’s around 19, and is trying to become a bounty hunter.
She’s really energetic and naive but also pretty skeptical at times! Her lifelong dream was to help people and travel and being a bounty hunter fulfilled both! With the help of her brother Ezio, she trained to become one. Eventually bidding her brother and father a farewell to them and her home on the edge of the Star kingdom to travel to the earth kingdom. She left when she was 18 so it took her like a year to get there since she was traveling on foot. She met Kassi and Nix whilst she was attempting to fight off a wolf that was the two were supposed to kill for a bounty. After Nix and Kassi saved her and killed the wolf they asked the obvious question of “YOURE LIKE 19 WHY ARE YOU TRYING TO FIGHT A WOLF????” To where Abbigale explained her situation. Nix pointed out that she wasn’t even old enough to be a bounty hunter in the earth kingdom (in the star kingdom you have to be 18 whilst in the earth kingdom you have to be 21 but Abbi didn’t know this) and didn’t even have a license to be one yet and also clearly wasn’t ready for it. Distraught and disappointed Abbigale was gonna go home, but Kassi jumped in and offered that the two would help her until they could be a hunter! Nix was reluctant but eventually agreed. So the three set off :)! I imagine her and Nix bickered a lot at first but got along eventually.
Also fun fact her brother Ezio is disabled, a wheelchair user, I love him he’s very cool (I’ll tell you more about him laterr)
Some quotes as usual!
“Hey! L-Look you might be a trained bounty hunter with a lot of experience and stuff but that’s doesn’t mean you have to be a dick about it! I can do exactly what you’re doing and better!
‘You almost got mauled by a wolf kid.’
YEAH BUT I DIDNT—“
“This is getting bigger than all of us..I kinda wish we could just let it happen so we don’t have to deal with it, god that sounds awful—“
“I fucked up! I fucked up so much and I hurt you and I’m sorry okay? Is that what you wanna hear? I’m sorry and I just…I want all this to end..”
Shes my skrunkly
Abbi is the token cis and white friend ausjjsjs
(Nix is south east asian and Kassi is black)

Hi hi hi helloo, big fan of your works and all :p Anyway, is the update for your Earth 197320 series coming sooner or laterr? I mean, you can take as long as you want ofc, I just needed something similar I guess 🥲 Any recs maybe?? I'm searching for something angsty haha
Hiiii thank you <3 That's always a lovely thing to read, I appreciate it, Nonny.
So my plan was to start regularly writing the final(!) story for Earth-197320 since like, 2020. Then 2020 happened and my muse noped the fuck out for about 8 or 9 months. But I was very prepared to start writing it in 2021! Then several things happened:
The Blood in Your Veins, taken from a prompt of all things, decided that it wasn't going to be a 20k fic, but a 90k fic, and since I was publishing it as a WIP it took some precedence.
I changed jobs for what turned out to be a really sucky job and then got weirdly sick in the summer which really killed my muses for like, 3 months.
But! I started working on it in October! ... then half-way through, my Marvel muse decided it needed a break and I didn't do anything in the MCU (including watching TV/movies) for two months.
Okay, fine, I could still start working on it in December and that counts as 2021.
Then I decided to join an IS gift exchange and am now finishing up with the monster currently a WIP on AO3.
Then NWH came out and I am of course writing something for that (that also was supposed to be a one-shot but guess what, it's not a one-shot anymore).
And... yeah. My poor little finale got pushed back again and again and again. So I don't plan on doing anymore challenges and want to really work on the finale of Earth-197320 once the NWH fic is done. I have prompt replies to get to from 2019 and 2020 but those are the only other works on my eventual to-do list. But I desperately want to finish the Earth-197320 series this year. I love the ideas I have for it and I've got about 12k written so far (it's hard to know for sure with all the notes in the doc too). Which is not much, but it's a start. Also, I have to finish this before I work on what is probably gonna be my magnum opus in this fandom if I pull it off right. Assuming MoM doesn't change my muses.
This reply was significantly longer than it needed to be. xD
(Also, as for fic recs, see the ask two posts below! Some of those are very, very angsty. Otherwise, there's definitely angsty one-shots I have favorited in my public bookmarks on AO3).

Best Space Operas of 2019
https://ift.tt/2NPOHv1
From A Memory Called Empire to Star Wars IX, here are all of the space operas, on screen and on the page, we're looking forward to in 2019.
facebook
twitter
tumblr
Here at Den of Geek, we love a good space opera: that delightful subgenre of science fiction that combines action, adventure, romance, and melodrama and sets it all in space.
Between now and the end of 2019, fans of space opera have a lot to look forward to. Whether or not you're excited about the December 20, 2019 release of Star Wars Episode IX, the year should be a good one for space opera—especially for novel readers, but with a few films and comics thrown in for good measure.
Here are the space operas (and some stories that are space opera-adjacent) we've already consumed or are most looking forward to consuming at Den of Geek...

January
Fire Fury Frontier by Amanda Rose
This dystopian novel follows the remnant of humanity aboard the single ship, the Saisei. Refugees from a dead planet, humanity has lost any knowledge of what it is to live on a single world instead of traveling the stars—but space is not always a hospitable home. Set 200 years after the events of her 2018 novel Fire Fury Freedom, the book looks into what could be humanity's last days...
Io
In Io, a young scientist wants to save a post-apocalyptic Earth, but has to make a choice of whether to leave for the moon Io with Earth's last survivors. The Netflix film, starring Margaret Qualley and Anthony Mackie, the made-for-Netflix original didn't get great reviews, but for viewers looking for a post-apocalyptic space fix, this may be a good way to spend ninety minutes.
Shadow Captain by Alastair Reynolds
The two sisters of Reynolds's 2016 Revenger return to face old wounds—and seek new adventure—in this second part of the "Revenger" trilogy. Adrana and Fura Ness signed on to a mercenary ship in Revenger, and events separated them, including Adrana's capture by pirate Bosa Sennen. The two decide to go after Bosa Sennen's treasure ship, but those who want the pirate dead won't care whether Bosa Sennen is flying the ship, or two sisters out for their own revenge.
Dragon Pearl by Yoon Ha Lee
Korean mythology and space opera intersect in this fantastic middle grade offering from well-known SF writer Yoon Ha Lee (also a writer on The Vela, below). Min, a fox who—like her family—takes human form to avoid cultural prejudice about foxes being unlucky, cons her way into space to find out what happened to her older brother, Jun.
A young enlisted member of the Space Forces, Jun has been accused of desertion, and Min's determined to prove that's not true—and find him, before something horrible can happen to him. Could he really have gone searching for the Dragon Pearl, an artifact that can perfectly terraform a planet without the intervention of the dragons?
Although this is aimed at a younger audience, there's plenty here for older readers to enjoy, especially the foxes, dragons, goblins, and ghosts that Lee introduces to a universe of multi-world governments, space pirates, and terraforming.

The City in the Middle of the Night by Charlie Jane Anders
On a planet divided between eternal night and eternal day, most cities are located on the border between those two extremes in Anders's new novel. The dystopian world, where time itself is controlled by the government, may find itself looking to be saved by a girl once exiled to night—who found a way to survive.
Read our full review of City in the Middle of the Night.
No Way by S. J. Morden
In the sequel to One Way, Frank Kitteridge is stranded on Mars and determined to find his way home. Abandoned and left for dead by the corporation XO, Frank discovers that he's not as alone on the planet as he expected—and the survivors of an SO base on Mars may try to take everything he has left.
Polaris Rising by Jessie Mihalik
For two years, Ada von Hasenberg has been a princess on the run—into the stars—to avoid a betrothal she doesn't want in this first volume of a new space opera trilogy. Captured by an outlaw hired by her father, Ada's fate gets worse when the outlaw, known as the Devil of Fornax Zero, encounters the ships of her jilted fiancée's family. Can she make a deal with the Devil to save her family's face, and choose her own fate?
Terminal Uprising by Jim Hines
If you missed Hines's series opener, Terminal Alliance, you've yet to meet space janitor Marion "Mops" Adamopoulos and her team. While their original plan was just to clean up after their ship, they stumble upon some truths about the fate of Earth (now overrun by zombie-like feral humans) and the aliens who supposedly saved humanity. With the truth in her hands, as well as her own ship, Mops is off to change the fate of humanity.

March
Sky without Stars by Jessica Brody and Joanne Rendell
Imagine a YA version of Les Miserables set on a French colony planet. That's the premise behind Brody and Rendell's series opener. The planet of Laterre was settled by the wealthy French and their descendants when Earth's end was nigh. But while the wealthy continue to rise, the poor starve, and the discontented inhabitants of Laterre plot a revolution that will rival the rebellion of their historical ancestors. Chatine, Marcellus, and Alouette—a thief, an officer, and a library guardian—find their fates intertwined as revolution comes to Laterre, and no one's destiny is certain.
Ancestral Night by Elizabeth Bear
In Bear's new series opener, Haimey Dz and her salvage crew stumble upon information at the edge of the Milky Way that could change everything. With revolutionaries seeking to use ancient tech to start a war, Haimey has to get to the bottom of the mysteries of an ancient civilization first, before that knowledge can be used against everyone she cares about.
A Memory Called Empire by Arkady Martine
Mahit Dzmare, the ambassador from a small mining Station, makes her way to the center of the Texicalaani Empire, a hungry growing empire whose ambitions might have led to the murder of her predecessor. Mahit is determined to keep Station free and independent—and bring the murderer of the previous ambassador to justice.

The Vela
In Serial Box's first space opera serial, mercenary Asala Sikou isn't that concerned about her dying star system—she's looking out for number one. But when she gets paired with a rich president's kid on a rescue mission, she finds herself in the middle of a situation where the universe may be in the balance—and she will be the one to decide who deserves to survive. The authors for the serial are Becky Chambers, Yoon Ha Lee, Rivers Solomon, and SL Huang, all of whom have earned critical acclaim for their previous SF works.

The Colossus by Jay Allan
Allan's "Blood on the Stars" series hits its twelfth installment in this novel, in which the Confederacy and the Hegemony struggle for dominance of the known worlds. When the Hegemony appears in control of an incredible weapon, a superbattleship known as the Colossus, it appears that the tide of war has again turned. But even while the battle for the Rim seems to be at its peak, there are other, older enemies waiting for their turn to enter the fray...

May
Vessel by Lisa A. Nichols
NASA astronaut Catherine Wells and her crew are lost in deep space, and everyone believes that they are dead. When Catherine returns after ten years, with little memory of what happened to her or the rest of the crew, readjusting to life on earth is difficult. Her husband has gotten remarried. Her young daughter is now a teenager Catherine doesn't know. And Catherine herself suffers from jumps in memory and consciousness—she increasingly finds herself waking in places she shouldn't be, including highly secured areas of NASA. Everything happening makes her wonder what actually happened to her and her crew... and what might truly be happening now that she's back on Earth.
Octavia Gone by Jack McDevitt
Alex Benedict returns in an eighth series installment of space mystery. Alex's teammate, Gabe, has reappeared after eleven years lost in space. As Gabe tries to rebuild his friendships with Alex and Chase, and they try to readjust to Gabe's presence, an artifact from Gabe's old collection is stolen, giving the team a chance to work together and solve a mystery, just like in the good old days. With leads from a dead pilot pointing them toward infamous missing scientists, the three may be on one of the greatest archaeological adventures of their time.
Aurora Rising by Amie Kaufman & Jay Kristoff
Legionnaire Tyler Jones misses the Draft, which would have assigned him to a more prestigious squad than the bunch of misfits he ends up with, because he's on a mission to rescue a cryogenically frozen girl from a lost transport ship. But missing the Draft isn't the only problem the girl causes Tyler. Just as he and his squad are out on their first mission, they discover that the girl, Aurora Jie-Lin O'Malley, has stowed away with them. The entire Terran Defense Force is looking for her—most likely because she has superhuman powers. This YA series starter introduces seven mismatched crew mates, both human and alien, and launches them into an intergalactic adventure.
Ad Astra
Because of the hard science angle, Ad Astra is unlikely to really qualify as a space opera. But the Brad Pitt film about an engineer who goes into space, seeking for answers about his father's failed mission to find extra terrestrial life on Neptune, should have plenty of beautiful space cinematography.

The Lesson by Cadwell Turnbull
While The Lesson is entirely set on Earth, its storyline, five years after first contact of humans with a super-advanced alien species, earns it a spot on this list. A Ynaa ship hovers over Water Island in the U.S. Virgin Islands, and the Virgin Islanders have developed a tenuous peace with the aliens. A year after the death of a boy, at the hands of the Ynaa, three families lives intertwine as everything begins to change on the islands once again, and the peace is broken. Not only does this first contact story beg to be read, but its unique setting from an #OwnVoices author (Turnbull is from the USVI) make it an appealing way to spice up your SFF reading list.
Children of Ruin by Adrian Tchaikovsky
This sequel to Children of Time continues the saga of terraformers from a dying Earth—who woke something on their new planet that would have been better left sleeping. Thousands of years after Earth's civilizations fell, the remaining humans have made allies with a spider-like people, the Portiids. When these humans receive a signal being transmitted from Nod, they are excited at the possibility of finding human cousins… unaware that they're walking into danger.
Empress of Forever by Max Gladstone
Vivian Liao is an innovator, and she never expects her own work to fling her into the future. But the time in which she finds herself is no utopia—instead, an Empress who can destroy worlds with a thought reigns supreme, and Viv has to lead a rag tag team of subjugated misfits into a rebellion that will let her reclaim her old life.
Orphans by Roberto Recchioni and Emiliano Mammucari
Italian authors Roberto Recchioni and Emiliano Mammucari continue this sweeping tale of an alien war against Earth, and the five "Orphan" heroes who stand against the aliens. The first two volumes were finally translated into English and released in the United States in 2018, and Lion Forge is keeping the European import coming with a third volume, Truth, that explores whether the true enemy is the alien forces—or within the elite Orphan Squadron's own ranks.
The Sol Majestic by Ferrett Steinmetz
Kenna and a band of misfits must come together to save everything they've come to cherish—in this case, the galaxy's most renowned restaurant, the Sol Majestic. This humorous interplanetary tale takes a poke at some of the epic nature of space opera, while also building a story about staying true to one's ideals and learning about strengthening friendship and love.
Velocity Weapon by Megan E. O'Keefe
In this debut novel, two siblings are destined to save the universe—but when soldier Sandra has her gunship destroyed, she wakes more than two hundred years in her future. The war she and her brother, Biran, were supposed to end is over, but with both sides destroyed in the process. Everyone she ever knew is dead. Separated by time and space, will she and Biran find a way to set things right? This looks like a series launcher, so odds are good that the novel will leave that question open, and take us deeper into space-time looking for the answer.

Across the Void by S. K. Vaughn
When Commander May Knox wakes, she doesn't have any memory of her mission, or even who she is. She discovers that her ship is failing, and she is the only surviving member of a crew bound for one of Jupiter's moons. Everyone believes that May is dead, and her husband, Stephen—estranged due to the mission—is on bereavement leave from NASA. But when May's voice finally reaches Earth, Stephen returns to guide her to safety—not realizing that not everyone wants May to survive. This thriller takes notes from previous SF thrillers and space missions gone wrong, such as Arrival and The Martian.
Salvation Day by Kali Wallace
Deadly viruses and abandoned starships mix in Wallace's fast-paced sci-fi thriller. Zahra and her crew are hired to infiltrate the abandoned exploration vessel House of Wisdom. All they need is to kidnap Jaswinder Bhattacharya, the only survivor of the virus that killed the rest of the ship's voyagers. Bhattacharya's DNA allows entry into the vessel, but breaking into the ship opens a can of worms that Zahra and her crew never anticipated—the truth to a secret the government has been hiding for years. Packed with explosions, betrayals, and unexpected twists, this suspenseful thriller may well keep you up at night...
Dark Age by Pierce Brown
Brown continues his "Red Saga Rising" series in this fifth installment, revolutionary Darrow begins to wonder if he is still a hero. Though he still dreams of a Utopian society beyond the color-coded corruption he fought for so long, he's become an outlaw in the very nation he founded. Meanwhile, Lysander au Lune, is determined to bring peace to the system, by force if necessary, even if Darrow stands in his way. So much has happened in the first four books of this series that starting in book five is probably not a great idea, but for fans used to long series reads (some critics compare this in tone to a Game of Thrones set in space), grabbing book one might be just the thing.
Medusa in the Graveyard by Emily Davenport
After the revolution in Medusa Uploaded, the heroes have taken the helm of government... but they soon realize that the Old Guard they displaced knew how to do things like keep the lights on. Ruling isn't all it's cracked up to be, especially when the new leaders of the generation starship Olympia are faced with judgment from three ancient, sentient starships guarding their way to a planet known as the Graveyard. As the second book in a trilogy, this title depends on knowledge of what has gone on before—and while the series has plenty of levity, some familiarity with Greek tragedy may enhance your reading experience.
The Redemption of Time by Baoshu
This fanfiction become canon is a prequel to Cixin Liu's extremely well-received "Three Body Problem" series. Focusing on Yun, a traitor to the human race who has helped the alien Trisolorans conquer Earth, the novel delves into the man's life, from his battle with cancer through his work with the aliens. As his life nears its end, he's once again drawn into conflict—but now, he refuses to be anyone's pawn. While some readers feel this work, approved by Liu, can be read alone, others find it highly dependent on having read The Three Body Problem and sequels for enjoyment.
The Last Astronaut by David Wellington
When Sally Jansen's mission to Mars ended in disaster, she believed that her days in space were over. But when a large alien object threatens Earth, NASA reaches out to Jansen, one of their most accomplished astronauts, for one more mission. This could be the redemption Jansen has always hoped for, but if she doesn't succeed, it could be the end of humanity.

Escaping Exodus by Nicky Drayden
Seske Kaleigh's clan has long voyaged the stars in spacefaring beasts, carving up their insides to create systems of mass transit and cities in which their people can live. The barely-living creature keeps its human occupants alive and able to survive until they use up the creature's resources and have to move to another. The system works... until something goes horribly wrong.
Read our review of Nicky Drayden's last novel, Temper.
Arch Allies by Audrey Sharpe
Sharpe launches the first in her new space opera, the Starhawk Rogue series, with the tale of a down-on-her-luck pilot who just wants her own ship. When Natasha Orlev discovers a buried starship, she knows it's the key to finding her way to prosperity—as long as she can dig it up before the Feds realize she's performing illegal salvage. And of course, she's not the only one interested in claiming the ship for herself. Readers won't have to wait long to find out what happens next in this series; Sharpe already has the second novel, Marked Mercenaries, available for preorder ahead of its September publication date.

Infertility within your couple
There are several reasons for a couple not to be able to conceive without having to resort to medical support. The term infertility is applied to couples who fail to have a child after one or two years of regular unprotected sexual intercourse, which does not necessarily imply the impossibility of fertilization in the longer term. Most types of infertility can be treated with medical procedures or traditional techniques
Indeed Pain in the lower abdomen and lower back.     Period of disturbed periods with unbearable pain     Chest tightness especially during the night (Feeling of suffocation).     Feeling generally tired in the morning when waking up with body aches.     Sometimes a feeling of disgust towards the husband.     A tightening in the heart from dusk to halfway through.     A nervousness that occurs regularly     nightmares: making love while sleeping with someone close to you or someone else taking on her husband's face; often bear children during this same sleep; see blood; see a madman; breastfeed; see large numbers of fish etc.

The Saturday Review is a weekly meme hosted by me (Taylor Fenner's Bookish World) where fellow book bloggers and readers can share what books they've recently reviewed.  A Game of Thrones by George R. R. Martin Blurb: Published in celebration of the twentieth anniversary of George R. R. Martin s landmark series, this lavishly illustrated special edition of A Game of Thrones featuring gorgeous full-page artwork as well as black-and-white illustrations in every chapter revitalizes the fantasy masterpiece that became a cultural phenomenon. And now the mystery, intrigue, romance, and adventure of this magnificent saga come to life as never before.  A GAME OF THRONES A SONG OF ICE AND FIRE: BOOK ONE With a special foreword by John Hodgman  Winter is coming, and in the frozen wastes to the North, sinister and supernatural forces are massing beyond the kingdom s protective Wall. At the center of the conflict lie the Starks of Winterfell, a family as harsh and unyielding as the land they were born to. Sweeping from a region of brutal cold to a distant summertime kingdom of epicurean plenty, here is a tale rife with plots and counterplots, tragedy and betrayal, victory and terror, as each faction endeavors to win that deadliest of conflicts: the game of thrones." My Review: Cover: 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 (I've seen a lot of different covers for this book, but since this is the illustrated edition, I think it really compliments the edition well.) Summary/Tagline: 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 (“When you play a game of thrones you win or you die” – George R.R. Marton, A Game of Thrones" So many lines in this book are quotable but this one is probably the most telling of the story. There will be death. There will be betrayal and intrigue.) Characters: 🌟🌟🌟 🌟🌟   (This book is told in multiple perspectives: Jon Snow, Tyrion Lannister, Daenerys Targaryen, Ned Stark, Bran Stark, Sansa Stark, Arya Stark, Caitlyn Stark, and more. There are some characters you hate straight off like Joffrey and Cersei, characters you love instantly like Dany, Khal Drogo, and Jon, but overall they're all really well developed.) Worldbuilding: 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 (From Winterfell to the Eyrie, King's Landing to the Dothraki lands this book is gorgeously set, with diverse landscape and imposing castles, desert lands and haunting woods.) Story: 🌟🌟🌟🌟 (I went into this book not expecting to like it. I've tried watching the show a couple times but never from the beginning and I thought, it's time. I need to start from the beginning, read all the currently published books if I can, and then watch the show. The first chapter in the woods beyond the wall dragged for me but everything after that was fantastic. I devoured this book in a week, fell in love with the characters, and now eagerly await the arrival of book two so I can return to this fantastic story. The only thing I did not care for in the plot was all the killing of the horses and direwolves. I'm an animal lover and while I don't care what humans get killed in battle scenes, I dislike the killing of animals and could barely stomach those parts. I suppose they are casualties of war, but I'd rather remain oblivious.) Overall: 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 4.8 of 5 Stars! My Rating: 🌟🌟🌟 🌟🌟 4.8 of 5 Stars! The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson Blurb: The classic supernatural thriller by an author who helped define the genre. First published in 1959, Shirley Jackson's The Haunting of Hill House has been hailed as a perfect work of unnerving terror. It is the story of four seekers who arrive at a notoriously unfriendly pile called Hill House: Dr. Montague, an occult scholar looking for solid evidence of a “haunting;' Theodora, his lighthearted assistant; Eleanor, a friendless, fragile young woman well acquainted with poltergeists; and Luke, the future heir of Hill House. At first, their stay seems destined to be merely a spooky encounter with inexplicable phenomena. But Hill House is gathering its powers—and soon it will choose one of them to make its own. My Review: Cover: 🌟 (Like Game of Thrones, The Haunting of Hill House has many variations when it comes to cover. This is not one of my favorites. I much prefer the Penguin Horror Classics cover for a creepier vibe.) Summary/Tagline: 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 ("Makes your blood chill and your scalp prickle" - from a New York Times Review Blurb on a different cover. This tagline prepares you for a chilling read.) Characters: 🌟🌟 (Oh Eleanor, Eleanor how I hate you. You're weak, your gullible, you're.. annoying. The problem I had connecting with the characters in this book has entirely to do with the differences between the book and the 1999 movie adaptation, The Haunting [my personal favorite adaptation]. ) Worldbuilding: 🌟🌟🌟 (I like the picture Ms. Jackson paints of Hill House and it's horrifying past, I'll give the book that.) Story: 🌟🌟(Again, I have the horrible problem of having seen The Haunting many, many times. It's one of my favorite movies. So I knew the basic premise of the story going in. It's a bit of a chicken before the egg dilemma for me. Did I love the movie more for the liberties the director took with the source material? Did I hate the book for being so different from the movie adaptation? Is it just because I dislike Eleanor Vance that much? I cannot say. All I can say is that I've heard popular horror novelists describe this book as truly frightening and for me it just... wasn't.) Overall: 🌟🌟🌟 2.6 of 5 Stars! My Rating: 🌟🌟🌟 2.6 of 5 stars!  Sky Without Stars by Jessica Brody and Joanne Rendell Blurb: A thief. An officer. A guardian.  Three strangers, one shared destiny . . . When the Last Days came, the planet of Laterre promised hope. A new life for a wealthy French family and their descendants. But five hundred years later, it’s now a place where an extravagant elite class reigns supreme; where the clouds hide the stars and the poor starve in the streets; where a rebel group, long thought dead, is resurfacing. Whispers of revolution have begun—a revolution that hinges on three unlikely heroes… Chatine is a street-savvy thief who will do anything to escape the brutal Regime, including spy on Marcellus, the grandson of the most powerful man on the planet. Marcellus is an officer—and the son of a renowned traitor. In training to take command of the military, Marcellus begins to doubt the government he’s vowed to serve when his father dies and leaves behind a cryptic message that only one person can read: a girl named Alouette. Alouette is living in an underground refuge, where she guards and protects the last surviving library on the planet. But a shocking murder will bring Alouette to the surface for the first time in twelve years…and plunge Laterre into chaos. All three have a role to play in a dangerous game of revolution—and together they will shape the future of a planet. Power, romance, and destiny collide in this sweeping reimagining of Victor Hugo’s masterpiece, Les Misérables. My Review: Cover: 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 (I love the cover of this book! It's what first made me notice this book when I saw it mentioned online, even before I read the blurb.) Summary/Tagline: 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 ("A thief, an officer, a guardian. Three Strangers, One Shared Destiny." - This tagline in the blurb really drew me in and made me want to learn more.) Characters: 🌟🌟🌟🌟 (You need to consider the characters as I did: Chatine, Marcellus, and Alouette are mainly the only characters that matter in this story. Sure, there are other characters in this story; Chatine's parents and sister, Marcellus's grandfather and former governess, Alouette's father and the sisters, and Inspectuer Limier - but they're mostly varying degrees of background noise. We have Chatine masquerading as a boy named Theo, Marcellus trying to become the man his grandfather wants him to be while having insecurities and fears that he could be like his father, and Alouette who wishes to explore the world above her underground refuge and has forgotten memories of her life before coming to the refuge. I liked Marcellus and Chatine but for some reason I really did not like Alouette.) Worldbuilding: 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 (I loved discovering the world of Laterre. With its fabulous world of the elite in Ledome to the slums of the frets, the peace of the defector camps, and the vast nothingness of the land beyond the capital and the horror that is Montfer. I can't wait to see more in the second book!) Story: 🌟🌟🌟🌟(This book grabbed me right away, from the 75 page readalong hosted by the authors to the rest of the book - I was hooked. I've never read Les Miserables, only once briefly watched a few minutes of the horrendous movie adaptation with Hugh Jackman (I like musicals okay? Just not when there's no dialogue and just singing) so I really am unfamiliar with the plot of it and can't tell you how closely this reimagining compares to the source material. There was a brief section in the middle where it felt like the story dragged (only about 50 pages) but the story quickly picked up again and the ending left me breathless! I can't stop thinking about this book and all I can say is: I WANT MORE!) Overall: 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 4.6 of 5 Stars! My Rating: 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 4.6 of 5 stars!  Wicked Saints by Emily A. Duncan Blurb: A girl who can speak to gods must save her people without destroying herself. A prince in danger must decide who to trust. A boy with a monstrous secret waits in the wings.  Together, they must assassinate the king and stop the war. In a centuries-long war where beauty and brutality meet, their three paths entwine in a shadowy world of spilled blood and mysterious saints, where a forbidden romance threatens to tip the scales between dark and light. Wicked Saints is the thrilling start to Emily A. Duncan’s devastatingly Gothic Something Dark and Holy trilogy... My Review: Cover: 🌟🌟🌟 (The cover is pretty to be sure. It's vibrant and in person, sparkly which I love. It's not my favorite cover this year, but it's not bad.) Summary/Tagline: 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 ("Let them hear her." Oooh I love that tagline! It makes me think of fierce female leads.) Characters: 🌟 (I honestly could not connect with any of the characters in this book. I wanted to like them but I just ended up finding them lacking. It's infuriating with a tagline on the cover and the premise of a fierce female lead that I'm left with the impression that the female lead is more of a side note in someone else's story.) Worldbuilding: 🌟🌟(This book should have had amazing worldbuilding, the blurb sets you right up for it but in the end I found it unoriginal. Maybe I've read too many fantasy novels of late, but this setting just didn't stand out for me.) Story: 🌟(I really tried to like this book. The premise sounded good but this book fell flat for me. I often find that when a book is as hyped up as this book has been, described as "one of the biggest hits of the year," that I struggle to get through it. I found myself skimming this book more than actually reading it. I have peculiar reading tastes and this book just wasn't for me.) Overall: 🌟🌟 2.4 of 5 Stars! My Rating: 🌟🌟 2.4 of 5 stars!  You'd Be Mine by Erin Hahn Blurb: Annie Mathers is America’s sweetheart and heir to a country music legacy full of all the things her Gran warned her about. Superstar Clay Coolidge is most definitely going to end up one of those things.  But unfortunately for Clay, if he can’t convince Annie to join his summer tour, his music label is going to drop him. That’s what happens when your bad boy image turns into bad boy reality. Annie has been avoiding the spotlight after her parents’ tragic death, except on her skyrocketing YouTube channel. Clay’s label wants to land Annie, and Clay has to make it happen.  Swayed by Clay’s undeniable charm and good looks, Annie and her band agree to join the tour. From the start fans want them to be more than just tour mates, and Annie and Clay can’t help but wonder if the fans are right. But if there’s one part of fame Annie wants nothing to do with, it’s a high-profile relationship. She had a front row seat to her parents’ volatile marriage and isn’t interested in repeating history. If only she could convince her heart that Clay, with his painful past and head over heels inducing tenor, isn’t worth the risk. My Review: Cover: 🌟🌟🌟🌟(This cover definitely grabbed my attention when I first saw it. I love the title font but I wish the tagline would be a little more visible and the author's name kind of blends in with the... is it wheat?) Summary/Tagline: 🌟🌟🌟🌟 ("Love on the line. Life on the open road." This tagline sounds interesting, but it's the blurb that really draws the reader in.) Characters: 🌟🌟🌟🌟 (Annie is country music royalty but she's reluctant to step into the spotlight. Clay is a rising star and the bad boy you can't help but fall for in this story.) Worldbuilding: 🌟🌟🌟🌟(I honestly think if you liked the show Nashville, you'll probably love this book because that is the vibe I got from it.) Story: 🌟🌟🌟(I liked this book well enough. I'm a big fan of books about musicians, opposites attract, hate-to-love that kind of thing. But this book lacked a little of the drama, sass, and bickering I've come to expect, but then I think - this is YA and most of the musician love stories I've read are aimed at a NA age group so perhaps that's where it deviates for me. If Kylie Scott's Stage Dive series could be compared to a sexy lifetime movie, You'd Be Mine is a cute Hallmark type book.) Overall: 🌟🌟🌟🌟 3.8 of 5 Stars! My Rating: 🌟🌟🌟🌟 3.8 of 5 stars!  Smoke and Key by Kelsey Sutton Blurb: A sound awakens her. There's darkness all around. And then she's falling... She has no idea who or where she is. Or why she's dead. The only clue to her identity hangs around her neck: a single rusted key. This is how she and the others receive their names—from whatever belongings they had when they fell out of their graves. Under is a place of dirt and secrets, and Key is determined to discover the truth of her past in order to escape it. She needs help, but who can she trust? Ribbon seems content in Under, uninterested in finding answers. Doll’s silence hints at deep sorrow, which could be why she doesn't utter a word. There's Smoke, the boy with a fierceness that rivals even the living. And Journal, who stays apart from everyone else. Key's instincts tell her there is something remarkable about each of them, even if she can't remember why. Then the murders start; bodies that are burnt to a crisp. After being burned, the dead stay dead. Key is running out of time to discover who she was—and what secret someone is willing to kill to keep hidden—before she becomes the next victim… My Review: Cover: 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟(I love, love, love the cover of this book! It's dark, mysterious, and gorgeous!) Summary/Tagline: 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 ("The End is Only the Beginning." Hold for a minute while I think of the line from The Mummy, "death is only the beginning." I do love the tagline for this book, it makes me want to see what that cryptic line means.) Characters: 🌟🌟🌟🌟 (I like the unique names of the characters in this book. Instead of the names they had in life they are named by the objects with them when they come back from their graves. Key, Ribbon, Smoke... unusual, but kind of cool character names. I thought the characters were reasonably developed, I feel like I got a good handle on their personalities.) Worldbuilding: 🌟🌟🌟🌟(This book, above all things is creative, and that definitely extends to the worldbuilding. I enjoyed seeing the world through Key's eyes... The world of Under is dark and delightfully creepy which I absolutely loved!) Story: 🌟🌟🌟🌟(This book is so unique and creative... there's just something so different about it. I was hooked from the beginning and the story did not let me down. It was a little confusing at times and dragged in a few places but overall, it was a good read! The writing is easy to get into which makes for a quick read that will keep you dying for answers alongside Key to the very end.) Overall: 🌟🌟🌟🌟 4.4 of 5 Stars! My Rating: 🌟🌟🌟🌟 4.4 of 5 stars!

Sky Without Stars (System Divine #1) by Jessica Brody & Joanne Rendell Publisher: Simon Pulse Release Date: March 26th 2019 Genre: Retellings, Young Adult, Science Fiction Review: Sky Without Stars by Jessica Brody and Joanne Rendell is fantastic. I am loving this book. If the cover doesn't grab you right away then the story will draw you in. As the reader you are introduced to three characters, Chatine, Marcellus, and Alouette. These three people couldn't be more different but they will all touch each others lives in a different way. Chatine is a thief. Chatine has lived a hard life. She is considered to be part of the lowest part of society, the third estate. No one cares about her or others like her. Obviously she doesn't have the best outlook on life.  Marcellus is the son of a renowned traitor. Marcellus wants to be the best solider that he can be but he just isn't cut out for it. He is so used to being alone that he really just wants to be loved by anyone. Alouette has a secret. She has lived underground her entire life. She grew up helping the sisters record history. Now she lives in a time that people don't remember the written word. Alouette wants nothing more than to go outside but once she is outside she discovers secrets about her past that she wasn't ready for.  I really enjoy these characters. Just as importantly, I enjoyed the world building. Brody and Rendell brought us a beautiful world that is so vivid. Even the drabby parts were described so beautifully. I really enjoyed this book. One thing I really appreciate is this book makes me feel like I am there and that I am part of the story. I have read Les Miserables and I have to say that this is a great retelling of Les Miserables but I feel like a lot of backstory is left out compared to the book it is based on. I think someone who has not read Les Miserables  won't have any issues with this story and they will probably breeze straight through it. Someone who has read it, will definitely notice the differences and the backstory that is missing. You should definitely check out this book. I really like it and I think it is worth your time to read. Plus there are so many good and fun things coming out about this book. Check it out because I don't think you will regret it. Favorite Quotes: High on a hill, the family built their Grand Palais under a vast climate-controlled dome. And in the flatlands below lived their chosen people.  Since the day she was born into this Regime, she was fated to die young. She would never see the stars. She would never feel the warmth of real Sol-light on her face. She would never escape. He had to prove to himself, once and for all, that he was not his father’s son. He was a loyal grandson and a proud member of the Second Estate. She was so sick of it. The secrets. The mysteries. The torn-out pages. The hidden boxes. She needed answers. And she needed them now.  The Map: Excerpt: Chapter One Chatine The rain was falling sideways in the Marsh. It was never a straight downpour. It was always crooked. Just like the people here. Con artists and hustlers and crocs, the lot of them. Anyone can be a saint until they’re hungry enough. Chatine Renard was perched high above it all, watching the stream of people churn through the busy marketplace like clotted blood through a vein. She was straddling an exposed metal beam that once connected the old freightship to its roof. At least, that’s what Chatine had been told—that the Frets were once titanic flying vessels that soared across the galaxy, bringing her ancestors to the planet of Laterre, the coldest and wettest of the twelve planets in the System Divine. But years of neglect and crooked rain had corroded the PermaSteel walls and ceilings, turning the staterooms in the passenger freightships into leaky, mold-ridden housing for the poor, and this cargo freightship into an open-air marketplace. Chatine pulled her hood farther down her forehead in an attempt to block her face. Much to her dismay, she’d noticed over the past few years that her eyelashes had grown longer, her chest had filled out, her cheekbones had become more pronounced, and her nose had slimmed to a dainty point, which she despised. She had streaked her face with mud before coming to the Marsh today, but every time she caught sight of her reflection in a puddle or the metal of a partially collapsed wall, she cringed at how much she still looked like a girl. So inconvenient. The Marsh was far more crowded today than usual. Chatine leaned forward and balanced on her stomach, hugging the beam to her chest as she scanned the countless faces that passed beneath her. They were always the same faces. Poor, downtrodden souls like her trying to find creative ways to stretch their weekly wages. Or con their neighbor out of a larg or two. Newcomers were rare to the Marsh. No one outside of the Third Estate bothered with the picked-over cabbages and mangy turnips for sale. With the exception of Inspecteur Limier and his army of Policier droids tasked with keeping the peace, the Frets and the marketplace in its center were normally avoided at all costs by anyone who didn’t live here. Which was why the man in the long coat immediately caught Chatine’s eye. His wealth was written all over his groomed black beard, matching hair, pressed clothes, and sparkling adornments. Second Estate, to be sure. She’d never known the First Estate to ever venture out of Ledôme. The climate-controlled biodome sat high on the hill just outside the capital city of Vallonay, shielding the First Estate from Laterre’s persistent downpours. And the slums below. Chatine’s eyes raked over the man, taking in every stitch and every button. Her gaze expertly landed on the gold medallion dangling like bait from his neck. She didn’t have to see it up close to know it was a relic from the Last Days, rescued from the burning embers of a dying planet. The Second Estate loved their First World relics. Five hundred largs easy, Chatine calculated in her head. Enough money to feed an entire Third Estate family for weeks. But it wouldn’t be long before the rest of the crocs in the Marsh spotted the treasure too and made their play. Which meant Chatine had to move fast. Gripping the beam with both hands, she swung her legs over the side and launched her body to the nearby catwalk, landing silently in a crouch. Directly underneath her, the man continued farther into the marketplace, weaving around the loose chickens that roamed the stalls searching for scraps. His gaze swept left and right as though taking mental inventory of the space. For a moment, Chatine wondered what he was doing here. Had he gotten lost on his way back up to Ledôme? Or was he here on some kind of business? But then she remembered the annual Ascension happening later today and reasoned he was probably a foreman of a fabrique, come to round up his workers who were skipping out on their shifts to get jacked up on weed wine, all the while hoping to win a new life. “Win a new life?” Chatine muttered to herself and let out a bitter laugh. Deluded fools, all of them. She crept across the grid of overhead walkways and ramps, skillfully ducking to avoid broken water pipes and leaping over giant chasms in the grated floor. All the while, she kept a close watch on the man, making sure she was never more than a few steps behind him. He finally slowed near Madame Dufour’s stall, pulled an apricot from his pocket, and took a large bite, the juice dripping into his beard. Chatine’s mouth started to water. She’d only ever tasted an apricot once, when a crate had fallen off the back of a cargo transporteur delivering fruit from the hothouses to Ledôme. Chatine watched Madame Dufour size the man up with sinister fascination. The old croc was practically licking her lips at the sight of such an easy mark. It was now or never. Ducking under the broken railing, Chatine grabbed onto the raised rim of the walkway floor and somersaulted over the edge. She whipped her body forward, fell three mètres down, and adeptly caught the beam below her. She circled around until it rested against her hips and she could balance there. She was now only a mètre above the man’s head. Yet with the buzz of the busy marketplace, no one even bothered to look up. “What a pitiful sight,” the man said, taking another bite of his apricot. He didn’t even bother to hide his disgust. The Second Estate rarely did. It was something about being stuck in the middle, Chatine had always noticed—not quite rulers and yet far from being one of the wretched like her—that gave the Second Estate their shameless sense of arrogance. They were almost more intolerable than the First Estate. Almost. Chatine’s gaze cut to the left, taking in the tower of empty crates stacked up next to Madame Dufour’s stall. She shimmied along the beam until she was directly above them. Then, she tipped forward, rotated around, and kicked both feet out in front of her. The crash was louder than she anticipated. The crates toppled to the ground, avalanching around the man as he fell to his knees with a grunt. Chatine moved quickly. Landing in a squat, she crawled through the wreckage until she found the man and graciously helped him back onto his feet. He was so busy brushing dust and cabbage leaves from his coat, he didn’t even feel the medallion being lifted from his neck. “Are you all right, Monsieur?” Chatine asked in her friendliest tone, slipping the pendant into her pocket. The man barely looked at her as he straightened his hat. “Quite all right, boy.” “You must be careful in the Marsh, Monsieur. It isn’t safe for someone of your rank.” “Merci,” he said dismissively as he tossed the apricot he’d been eating toward Chatine. She caught it and flashed him an appreciative smile. “Vive Laterre.” “Vive Laterre,” he echoed before turning away. Chatine grinned at the man’s back as she turned on her heels and slipped the half-eaten apricot into her pocket. It took all her strength not to consume the entire thing here and now. She knew the man would hardly even miss that gold medallion from his neck. He probably had ten just like it back in his manoir in Ledôme. But to her, it was everything. It would change everything. The wind picked up, howling through the stalls and biting viciously at Chatine’s skin. She pulled her tattered black coat tighter around her, trying in vain to stave off the chill. But the holes and ripped lining of her clothes weren’t the problem. It was the hunger—the ribs poking through her skin. There wasn’t a single shred of insulation left on her body. But after that score, she was finding it hard to care. As Chatine headed toward the south exit of the Marsh, weaving through stalls selling moldy potatoes, slimy leeks, and pungent seaweed dragged in from the nearby docks, there was a new lightness to her gait. A new hopefulness in her step. But just before passing through what used to be the old cargo ship’s loading bay, Chatine felt a large hand clamp down on her shoulder and she stopped dead in her tracks, a shiver running through her. “So nice of you to help out a member of the Second Estate,” a cold, robotic voice said. “I’ve never seen such chivalry from a Renard.” The emphasis he placed on her last name made Chatine squirm. She closed her eyes, mustering strength, and painted on a blithe smile. She slowly turned around. “Inspecteur Limier,” she said. “Always a pleasure.” His stony expression didn’t change. It hardly ever did. The circuitry implants on the left side of his face made it nearly impossible for the inspecteur to express any emotion. Chatine often wondered if the man was even capable of smiling. “I wish I could say the same for you, Théo.” His tone was flat. Only her parents called her Chatine. Everyone in the Frets knew her as Théo. It was the name she’d given herself ten years ago, when they’d first moved to the capital city of Vallonay and Chatine had decided that life as a boy would be much less complicated than life as a girl. Chatine clucked her tongue. “I’m sorry you feel that way, Inspecteur.” “What did you take from the kind monsieur?” Limier asked, his half-human, half-robot voice clicking on the hard consonants. Chatine refreshed her smile. “Whatever do you mean, Inspecteur? I know better than to steal from the hand that feeds me.” She nearly gagged on the words. But if they saved her from a one-way ticket to Bastille—the price you paid for stealing from an upper estate—then she could choke her way through them. Chatine held her breath as the inspecteur’s circuitry flickered on his face. He was computing the information, analyzing her words, searching for hints of perjury. Over the past ten years of living in the Frets, Chatine had learned how to lie. But lying to a human being was one thing. Lying to a cyborg inspecteur, programmed to seek the truth, was quite another. She waited, keeping her smile taut until the circuits stopped flashing. “Will that be all, Inspecteur?” Chatine asked, smiling sweetly while pressing her hands against her tattered black pants. Her palms were starting to sweat, and she didn’t want his heat sensors to pick up on it. Then, slowly, Chatine watched the inspecteur’s gloved hand extend toward her. With a soft touch that chilled her to the bone, he pushed up her black hood to reveal more of her face. His electric orange eye blinked to life, scanning her features. It seemed to linger a beat too long on her high, feminine cheekbones. Panic bloomed in her chest. Can it see who I really am? Chatine hastily took a step back, out of the inspecteur’s reach, and yanked her hood back down. “My maman is expecting me home,” she said. “So, if you don’t mind, I’ll be going now.” “Of course,” the inspecteur replied. “Thank you, Inspecteur. Vive Laterre.” As Chatine turned to leave, she felt her entire body collapse with relief. She had done it. She had fooled his sensors. She was a better liar than even she had come to believe. “I’ll just need to check your pockets first.” Chatine froze. She quickly surveyed her surroundings. She spotted five Policier droids in her vicinity. More than usually roamed the Marsh, due to the annual Ascension ceremony today. The droids—or bashers as they were referred to around here—stood at almost twice the size of an average man and their slate-gray exoskeletons crunched and whirred as they walked. Chatine wasn’t afraid of them, though. She’d escaped Policier droids plenty of times. They were fast and stronger than ten men, but they still had their limitations. For instance, they couldn’t climb. Careful not to move her head, Chatine glanced up, thanking her lucky Sols that there was an old pipe running directly over her head. She refused to get flown off to Bastille. A neighbor was currently serving three years for stealing a measly sac of turnips. A First World relic lifted off a Second Estater? She’d be looking at ten years minimum. And hardly anyone lived that long on the moon. She slowly spun back around to face Limier. “Of course, Inspecteur. I have nothing to hide.” Flashing another smile, Chatine stuffed her hand into her pocket and felt the medallion cool and smooth against her skin. The inspecteur once again reached a hand in her direction. Then, before he could react, Chatine hurled the apricot the monsieur had given her straight at the inspecteur’s face. His circuitry sparked as his brain tried to make sense of the incoming object. Chatine bolted, scrambling onto a table full of fabric scraps before leaping toward the pipe. For a second, she was flying, soaring above the inspecteur, the shoppers in the Marsh, and the Policier droids who were just starting to take notice of the disturbance. As she caught the pipe, she used her momentum to circle her legs around until she was straddling the rusty, metal pole. “Paralyze him!” Inspecteur Limier shouted to his droids, peering up at Chatine. His circuitry was going haywire, like someone had hacked the signal. “Now!” The bashers maneuvered their bulky PermaSteel bodies around one another, assembling into attack formation. Chatine knew she had to move quickly. One rayonette pulse she could dodge, but five? That would be rough. The pipe was too narrow to walk on, so Chatine shimmied across it on her stomach, weighing her options. The north exit was out of the question. It backed up to the Vallonay Policier Precinct, where she would certainly run into more droids. There was a catwalk about three mètres ahead of her. If she could reach it without getting shot, she could crawl the rest of the way to the east exit, back near Madame Dufour’s stall. A split second later, she felt the heat of the first rayonette pulse whizz by the side of her face. She sucked in a sharp breath and shimmied faster. A second droid took aim below her, its shot perfectly aligned at her left knee. She braced herself for the impact. But just then, a group of drunk exploit workers stumbled through the fray, arguing about who among them had the most Ascension points stored up. One of them crashed right into the droid, and the pulse barely missed her leg. “Oh, excuse me, Monsieur,” the drunk worker slurred to the droid, bowing ceremoniously. His friends broke out into hoots of laughter while Chatine took the opportunity to slide the rest of the way across the rusted pipe. Thank the Sols for strong weed wine, she thought as she launched herself toward the catwalk. She caught the railing with both hands just as a third pulse was fired from below. This one glanced her left shoulder. It wasn’t a direct hit, but it was enough. The pain was instant. Like someone had scraped her skin with a blazing-hot knife. She bit her lip to keep from crying out. The sound would only improve the droids’ aim. Within seconds, her left arm started to lose sensation from the paralyzeur now pumping through her blood. She scrambled to swing her feet up over the ledge of the walkway but was unsuccessful. Now she was just dangling there, her feet paddling against the air. The droids shoved people aside as they zeroed in on her location. More rayonette pulses tore past her, rippling and bending the air. It was only a matter of time before another one found its target. Chatine knew she needed a distraction. She spotted a crate packed with chickens directly in front of her. She shook out her left arm, trying to chase away the numbness that was spreading toward her fingers, but it was no use. The paralyzeur was quickly working its way through her muscles. Favoring her right hand, she gripped the railing as tightly as she could and pumped her legs until she’d built up enough momentum to reach the crate. She arched her body and kicked her legs out hard. The crate crashed to the ground and busted open. The chickens squawked and tried to fly away, but their useless wings barely allowed them to get off the ground. The commotion was enough, though. People were screaming, the stall owner was desperately trying to wrangle the loose birds, and the Policier droids fought to barrel through it all. But their efforts only managed to rile up the birds even more. They fluttered about, scraping people with their sharp claws. The droids started firing with abandon. But with all the chaos below, their aim was poor. They hit more chickens than anything else. The birds absorbed the stun of the rayonettes and fell limp to the ground. They wouldn’t be able to move again for a few hours. With the droids distracted, Chatine was finally able to pull herself onto the catwalk and crawl, one-handed, across the rusty, metal plank before shimmying down a support beam next to Madame Dufour’s stall. She glanced back to see the bashers still trying to push their way through the crowd to reach her. But with the number of people in the Marsh today and the riled-up chickens, it wasn’t an easy task. Madame Dufour glared at Chatine, her wrinkled arms folded across her chest. “Like father, like son,” she said, making a tsk sound with her teeth. “Mark my words, boy, you’ll be rotting on the moon before the end of this year.” Chatine flashed her a goading grin before swiping a loaf of chou bread from one of Madame Dufour’s crates and darting toward the exit. “Arrête!” The old woman’s command sounded like a croak. “Get back here, you wretched croc!” “Thanks for breakfast!” Chatine called back in a singsong voice. And then, before the droids could track her or Madame Dufour could catch her, Chatine was gone. Once she’d put a good distance between herself and the marketplace, she slowed to a walk and massaged her dead arm with the opposite hand. It wasn’t the first time she’d been shot by a rayonette. And it probably wouldn’t be the last. The sensation would return soon enough. Chatine reached into her pocket and pulled out the pendant she had lifted from the Second Estater. She sucked off the sweet apricot juice and held the medallion in her open palm, studying it. For the first time, Chatine noticed the ornate golden Sol carved into the surface. It was unlike any of the three Sols that hung in the sky of the System Divine. This was a First World Sol. Its brilliant, fiery rays flared out to the edge of the medallion. Chatine reverently clasped the pendant around her neck, a rare genuine smile creeping across her face. She hadn’t seen the light of a Sol in nine years. This was definitely a sign of good things to come. Excerpted from Sky Without Stars by Jessica Brody and Joanne Rendell. Copyright © 2019 by Jessica Brody and Joanne Rendell. All rights reserved.
