lmaooo honestly though. the Duality of man!!!

like, he IS confident. there is no question there. there is no shortage of internal validation. but!! i do think external validation means a lot to him. especially when it's from people he respects, people he cares about.

i remember in an interview with his dad once (sidenote: good lord jimmy chase does a lot of interviews. good for him!) he talked about how hard he was on ja'marr as a kid. not quite to the extent that i think a lot of these Athlete Borderline Abusive dads are of course, but just, very tough, very high expectations. how ja'marr and his mom thought of football as just fun, but jimmy knew it would be more for ja'marr, knew he could go all the way if he applied himself. and he really pushed him as a result of that, and he said he really only started like, excessively praising ja'marr's talent in 2019 (THE greatest season of college football). so like, it's not that ja'marr was starved for praise growing up, but it's something i think that wasn't given freely. it was something that really had to be Earned.

and now here we have a beacon of joy and light in human form - tee higgins, just always willing to praise ja'marr and give him his flowers. at the drop of a hat! he needs no excuse! he loves ja'marr and he admires him and his talent and who he is as a person and he's gonna share that! even if he doesn't like talking that much himself. he WILL say this. and ja'marr is gonna hear it! i can imagine that can get overwhelming at times for him!! and not in a bad way, just in a "wow, this feels really good i'm not exactly sure how to handle this, better joke about it!" way. (and again i've talked about ja'marr having Big Feelings but feeling like he has to hide them a lot of the time. could be a bit of a defense mechanism kicking in here!)

but even through all that, he manages to get himself into a sincere place towards the end of the interview, even amongst laughter and grinning at each other, and tells tee he appreciates it :')
