Upon closing, the original #neon sign which wrapped around the corner, was carefully removed and stored by the owners. They recently reached out to us to let us know that they donated their #neonsign to the American Sign Museum in Cincinnati. Sadly it closed in 2008 as the 2nd generation owners decided to retire and the neighborhood began to gentrify with younger,single people moving into the area. I spotted this gorgeous poster at the Brooklyn historical society in Brooklyn heights. I did some research and... After a collaboration with their New York counterparts was postponed, Brooklyn women, representing various relief societies, took it upon themselves to erect their own fair. Housed at the original Brooklyn Academy of Music premises on Montague Street, the Brooklyn and Long Island Sanitary Fair ran from February 22 to March 8, 1864, and raised over $400,000, the highest sum of any Sanitary Fair in the country up to that time. Founded after the outbreak of the Civil War, the United States Sanitary Commission was setup to supply food, potable water, clean clothing, bandages, hospital equipment, bedding, writing supplies, and postage to soldiers in the Union Army. The Sanitary Commission stated in 1861 that “four soldiers die of diseases incident to camp life for one that falls in battle… Sanitary measures, prudently devised and thoroughly executed, will do more to economize the lives of our soldiers, and thus save the nation men, money, and time, than could be effected by any improvement in the arms put into their hands.” At this time almost 3,000 nurses worked in makeshift Union hospitals. Head nurse Dorothea Dix, stated that her nurses needed to be “past 30 years of age, healthy, plain almost to repulsion in dress and devoid of personal attractions.” Sanitary Fairs were Organized via a network of women’s charitable societies, and raised over $25 million for sick and wounded Union soldiers. 339 Grand Street, also addressed as 57 Ludlow Street, located at the corner of Ludlow Street in the Lower East Side neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City was completed in c.1831-33 in the Federal style as one of five row houses constructed by John Jacob Astor on property he purchased in 1806. The early tenants of the building were several dry goods merchants. The rear addition on Ludlow Street was built c.1855. The front of the house has been a storefront since at least 1884.[1]

The house, a rare example of a surviving Federal-style house in Manhattan, is the only one of the five row houses built by Astor that is still largely intact. It features "a front facade with Flemish bond brickwork, high peaked roof and dormer", and the rear retains its "flat roof, stone lintels and sills, and cornice." The house is 3.5 stories in height in the front – three in the rear – and is 17 feet (5.2 m) wide.[1]

The house was designated a New York City landmark by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission on October 29, 2013.[1]

We announced last year that the Federal row house building that houses Ideal Hosiery is up for sale and we recently checked up on the shop and found that it is still open for business. This long-time men’s hosiery #storefront on Grand Street (its been open since 1950) which we photographed for our book “Store Front: The Disappearing Face of New York” in 2004 never ceases to amaze us as the window displays are full of dusty faded undershirts 👕and inside are rows of boxes 📦 of products that form a narrow aisle, and don’t look conducive to a vibrant business.
