I really love reading the writings that companies send their shareholders and fellow travelers, because it feels so absurd
But like, the best kind of absurd? Like, half the time they'll just sound directly supervillainish about their aspirations. But then you'll find out what they've actually done in the real world, and it's usually pretty good. Like, it'll be a bunch of stuff that's really incommensurate, but when you weigh it up it's roughly positive.
This isn't a true example of internal corporate writing, because libraries are harder to quote/copypaste, but QSRmagazine on McDonald's is hilarious. My favourite part (near the end) is:
>[McDonald's CEO Steve Easterbrook] “We looked at ourselves and thought, if we’re creating a world-class team to lead a world-class business, does a steady growth plan meet our expectations? And of course, our ambitions are greater than that,” Easterbrook says. “So we challenged ourselves to say, are there additional growth drivers that we can put on top of our traditional growth plan, which would really accelerate growth?”
>Those growth accelerators were the Experience of the Future store prototype, delivery in partnership with UberEats, and customer-forward tech platforms like the mobile order and pay app functionality.
Steve and his bougie friends want to be richer than God and talk a lot about "growth" because it's the only metric for getting richer they know how to grip. What does that lead them to do? Create* new and useful APIs for McDonald's core service - quickly and cheaply putting food in your hands.
Future Experience stores are getting a burger in a sci fi restaurant. The UberEats partnership is getting a burger brought to your door. The McDonald's app lets you perform every part of the order and transaction before you arrive and is actually v useful. The pay apps are just phone APIs for getting the money to McDonald's so they can get the food to you.
Most things on the market work roughly like this. Even if the company's boss is motivated by getting mega rich, usually the only way to do it is to make it easier for you to perform a useful transaction. You want a thing, they can do the thing at lower cost to them, so they offer to do it for money. It only works if you actually want the thing and tricking you into it isn't a stable solution. People who buy burgers genuinely want to eat burgers, and we're better off when we have better methods for doing so.
*I don't think Steve is likely responsible for these innovations, or that his management structure properly compensates the people who are, but they've got enough surpluses sloshing around that somehow they encourage some good ideas and occasionally route them to management.
