By • Olalekan Fagbade One person Killed, 3 others njured in fresh University Cult War Tragedy struck at the University of Benin (UNIBEN) on Friday as a renewed cult clash claimed the life of a 500-level student of the institution. According to reports, the student was shot dead inside the University campus, while three other students of the institution sustained various degrees of injury during the cult attack. As of press time, it was reported that the injured students have been rushed to a hospital for treatment. The cult clash reportedly began when the rampaging cult group members stormed the Anatomy Department back gate to kill their target before they proceeded to Physical Science and Laboratory Department. It was gathered that the deceased student was shot at a close range in his car while the three others were shot while they were trying to escape. The incident caused panic among the students and staff on the campus as they scampered for safety. According to sources, the rival fight began in Ekiadolor area, a suburb of the school, some days ago during which about three persons were allegedly killed. The fight later spread to the Ugbowo campus of the institution. A viral video of the incident showed a red car with bullet holes. The body of a man was seen removed from the car and taken to the back of a pick-up van. The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, SP Chidi Nwabuzor, said he was yet to be informed about the incident. “I am yet to be briefed of such an incident. UNIBEN announces Supplementary Post-UTME screening for 2022/2023 session

The University of Benin (UNIBEN) Supplementary Admission Screening Exercise for 2022/2023 Academic Session; is scheduled to take place on 7th December 2022 in designated centres within the Ugbowo Campus of the University. The Screening Exercise shall be conducted using the Computer Based Test (CBT) mode. All candidates are expected to be seated, latest one hour before the stipulated time for their screening exercise UNIBEN announces Supplementary Post-UTME screening for 2022/2023 session ELIGIBILITY - PLEASE NOTE: Candidate must fulfill the following criteria: Only candidates who applied through JAMB for the 2022/2023 UTME Admission and chose the University of Benin as First Choice and scored 200 and above are eligible for this Screening Exercise NOTE THAT CANDIDATES AWAITING RESULTS CAN GO AHEAD TO APPLY FOR SCREENING Obtained at least five (5) credit passes at GCE O/L, SSCE, NECO, or their equivalent. Bioremediation of Used Engine Oil Polluted Soil Using Goat Manure

Abstract

Hydrocarbon contamination of land, water, air, vegetation and human is a widespread global environmental concern. The aim of this study was to evaluate the performance of goat manure for the bioremediation of used engine oil polluted soil. 10kg soil sample was collected from a site free of used engine oil contamination (from an agricultural land in The Department of Petroleum Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, University of Benin, Ugbowo Campus, Benin City, Edo State in Nigeria) using a 22-cm hand-dug soil auger and stored in labeled black polythene bag. The sample was air dried, grinded and sieved through 2mm mesh before use. Before contamination, the soil sample was subjected to chemical digestion using 1:1 ratio of 0.25M hydrochloric acid and Nitric acid. Thereafter it was characterized to determine the physio-chemical properties. The physio-chemical properties determined include Total Heterotrophic bacterial, Moisture content Soil, pH, Electrical conductivity, Total hydrocarbon content (THC), Total organic carbon, Total nitrogen content in addition to the soil composition including percent sand, Total Phosphorus, Lead (Pb) and Iron (Fe). The used engine oil was added gradually into the bowl containing the unpolluted sieved soil sample and was properly mixed.

The used engine oil was to serve as the pollutant. The soil samples were left for 4days for stabilization before the commencement of treatment process. The experiment was monitored for a period of eight (8) weeks under which appreciable level of remediation had been obtained. Result obtained shows that there was a gradual increase in pH, Electrical conductivity (EC) and Total Heterotrophic bacterial (THB), and also a gradual decrease in total nitrogen content (TNC), total organic carbon (TOC), total phosphorus (TP), lead (Pb), Iron (Fe) and total hydrocarbon content (THC). The result explicitly showed that goat manure is a good substrate for bioremediation of used engine oil polluted site with calculated engine oil removal efficiency of 62.67%. The kinetic modelling shows that the experimental data fitted well with pseudo-second order kinetic model. On predicting the rate of hydrocarbon loss with time the non-linear regression model gave higher coefficient of determination of 0.9874 compared to the linear regression model that gave 0.9665.

By • Olalekan Fagbade Fuel subsidy Removal: Jubilations as Governor declares free transportation for Residents Residents of Benin metropolis have commended Gov. Godwin Obaseki of Edo, for introducing free transport service to cushion the effect of fuel subsidy removal on the people in the state. The residents spoke in separate interviews on Wednesday with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Benin. Mrs Agnes Ogieator, a trader at Oba of Benin market, said provision of free transport service was one of the best steps the governor had taken to cushion the effect of the hardship orchestrated by the new fuel regime. According to her, “I used to spend nothing less than N5,000 on transport on daily basis before the flag off of the free transport service. “That is history now, thanks to Gov. Godwin Obaseki for this initiative to reduce the hardship as I have now channel that N5,000 to other expenses.” Also speaking, Mr Gabriel Enalogholase, a media practitioner, said he appreciated the new development initiated by the governor. According to him, it is not everyone that can afford the recent hike in transportation. “Obaseki has done well as this will create an avenue for some persons to cut cost and save for better days.” On her part, Mrs Joy Idemudia, a judiciary staff, said because of bad roads in the state and hike in fuel, she had parked her vehicle and keyed into the free transport service provided by the state government. “I conveniently board the free bus in front of my house at Ekewam road on daily basis straight to king’s square, thereafter join another one on Aduwawa axis to my office without paying a dime. “In the evening when going home after close of work, I also still join the free bus home, I say thank you to our governor.” she said. Other beneficiaries also commended the state government for the initiative. They said Edo people are being relieved of the burden of high cost of transportation as a result of the rise in the cost of petrol occasioned by the fuel subsidy removal by the Federal Government. NAN reports that the free transport scheme operates between 6am and 7pm daily, covering all ECTS operational routes, both intra-city and inter-city routes, including Auchi – Igarra – Ibillo–Ososo; Uzebba–Ikhin – Otuo, and Abudu-Ubiaja, Abudu-Urhonigbe and Ewohirin to Ewatto.
