yoke like tyranny. yolk like egg. it’s really interesting how the canonical spelling is new yoke city instead of putting the egg pun front and center in the name as i expected and had initially thought. i think the yolk pun still reads well but it’s neat how they elect to not leave yoke as subtext but instead just fully text

oh my fucking god I just realized that if season 3 follows the precedent of being set in the immediate present day, and if it doesn't come out until 2025/2026, LIKE 3/4 YEARS WILL HAVE PASSED BETWEEN THE DIVORCE™ AND S3 WITH ZERO CONFLICT RESOLUTION IN THAT TIME

I don’t believe in fate, and I don’t believe that objects have souls, but sometimes the universe is serendipitous.

When I bought this collar, all I knew was that it was a) definitely Edwardian, and b) it was mine, because somehow it had not yet been claimed even though it had been over an hour since it was listed and this seller’s listings get claimed within seconds of posting. It arrived. It was Edwardian. It was so fucking beautiful. The lace is soft and airy and seemingly delicate, but the threads are in excellent condition.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And like I mentioned before, I am not shy about using antique textiles. I did know that I didn’t want to cut into the lace, because it had finished edges and was not an infinite repeat in the way that lace edgings or insertions often are—the flat yoke and the flounce were both discrete pieces. So I spent several hours painstakingly taking out the original seam holding the two together. This was thankfully a simple running stitch and I was able to remove it without damaging the lace at all. The flounce was long:
Tumblr media
It is folded in half in the image above. Much too long for me to sew into any kind of blouse without cutting it. So I toyed with the idea of making it into a frilly Edwardian petticoat.
Guys.
Tumblr media
Guys. It is exactly the right length. That is some serious serendipity at work.

not to post about something i have posted about 100 times but man they could have done such a good thing with the tcho tcho. like perhaps this is too fucking like "tragedy porn"-y, but i can't get the idea out of head of like how fucking awful do things need to get for a large part of a people, not like a few guys, to willingly go interact with the mythos. like it is the perfect thing to just highlight how no matter how good a delta green agent you are who makes sure to never hurt civilians, you already have supported a system that has relentlessly brutalized millions if not billions of people and everytime you go out to kill some tcho tcho because they are a "vector" you are continuing that, murder them because if ypu don't they'll free themselves and your boss the United States doesn't like that so shut fuck up, take that sanity loss and start to wonder if you are the worse evil here.

extremely normal thing to do when your loved ones are away somewhere for a couple weeks to vividly imagine their deaths and the trajectory your life would take and glimpsing just the barest shadow of the grief that would tear you apart every second of your remaining life very fun very recommendable

Sub iugum mittere Battle of Caudine Forks 321BCE To ‘send under the yoke’ was a practice in ancient Italy whereby defeated enemies were made to pass beneath a yoke constructed of spears either to humiliate them or to remove blood guilt.
The custom was a ritual humiliation of enemies practiced by the people of ancient Italy.
Both the Romans and the Samnites forced the captives of their defeated enemies to pass under a yoke formed from spears.
The practice is said to have originated as a form of expiation.

IT IS TIME: Miss Universe National Costume 2023
it's here! the Met Gala for people who actually understand what camp is!
yes I'm like 3 months late, but I sat down and watched the damn thing. I put up with the horrible little rhyming couplets for each contestant so you don't have to. and without further ado:
Tumblr media
Albania: Starting off very Victoria’s Secret this year! Apparently it’s gold for important symbolism reasons, not just because everything in this competition is blinged out to within an inch of its life. The wings do look nice in motion!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Angola has a good balance of bling, actual cultural dress, and oh hey it has surprise bonus art on the back! That will be a theme this year.
Tumblr media
Argentina: Why is there a guy in a hat right down at the bottom edge of her cape. He looks like he’s staring at her butt. How does this represent their flag.
Tumblr media
Aruba: This is fine. I like the coral. She thinks climate change is bad. Her parrot is clearly way too heavy to hold up and it wobbles like crazy in motion.
Tumblr media
Australia: This is now multiple years in a row that Australia has just worn a fucking prom dress. It’s got native wildflowers on. You could have made this exact same dress with a Great Barrier Reef theme and I would have liked it 80% more.
Tumblr media
Bahamas: This costume is allegedly based on a 19th-century doll from the Bahamas “world famous straw market,” which is already bullshit; I googled “bahamas straw market antique doll” and like. they both have big skirts? I guess? Anyway now I’m too distracted by the way she has a hoop skirt awkwardly jammed under there and hiked up on one side. Minus ten for poor construction.
Tumblr media
Bahrain's theme is “Bahrain’s pearl heritage,” which like. I guess? The headdress and yoke are pretty. Put more pearls on the actual outfit. Kudos for getting to wear pants.
Tumblr media
Belgium: Girl. No. Why is your theme “Latin dance” and why are you wearing a spangly cocktail dress with a totally unrelated piece of fabric fluttering behind it? (Apparently the fabric was designed by a member of Belgium’s royal family? Who is a fashion designer? This is what nepotism gets you.)
Tumblr media
Bolivia saw Aruba’s parrot and was like, I can do that better. And she was right! It’s way less wobbly and the costume as a whole does work better. Also made from recycled materials, so we’ll see if that’s a theme again this year. The back of the cape is nice too.
Tumblr media
Sadly, Bolivia's parrot supremacy was short-lived, because Brazil was like, bitch please. I see your sad little parrots and raise you FOUR giant parrots, and also the shoulder parrots are articulated and can turn their heads back and forth. I think Brazil wins the parrot competition that only she knew she was in.

For every man in your camp, there are thousands somewhere in the West Indies living under the same yoke, chained in fields, pressed on ships, sold into indenture. When they see a sitting governor protected by His Majesty’s Navy, deposed by an alliance of pirates and slaves, how many consider joining that fight? How many thousands of men will flock to Nassau, join your ranks, and help you defend it?

As a trans man who has had to put painstaking work into body positivity, body neutrality, and my own sense of manhood, I can't help but feel so bad for men who have, seemingly, never felt permission to have any positive feelings about their body and their manhood.
Yes, body positivity and body neutrality are for you, men. You owe nobody washboard abs, or beautiful facial hair, or clear skin, or unblemished skin, or "masculine" features. Genuinely, you are under no obligation to perform any of it. The weight of those expectations is genuinely suffocating. Let yourself remove that yoke from your shoulders and actually live.

last night i set a timer on my phone to let me know when my tea was done steeping. when the timer finished it made a different alarm sound than expected, and the old one is no longer available. it was changed for me without my input and cannot be put back the way it was. i'm welcome.
a few hours later i opened up the calculator app on my phone. first thing it did was pop up a little alert telling me where i could find the privacy policy. a privacy policy! for a calculator. i guess i should be grateful they're at least providing one, and letting me know how analytics on my calculator usage are gathered and subsequently shared, instead of just taken and shared without my knowing. smartphones are bad
