Fire breaks out at Hayes restaurant

A fire broke out at a popular Hayes restaurant with flats above on the Uxbridge Road last night (4 July) triggering a swift response from ten fire engines and approximately 70 firefighters.   The London Fire Brigade swiftly responded to calls at 9:41pm. Around 70 people left the building before firefighters arrived.   An eye witness who wished to remain anonymous told Hillingdon Today: “I saw blue lights at the rear of the property in the alleyway, the staff of the restaurant had evacuated out of the front and a group of people who were dining there evacuated to a nearby minibus they had come in. They all seemed in good spirits.”   The fire was brought under control by 12:24am.   There are no reports of any injuries.   The cause of the fire is under investigation.   #hayes #uxbridgeroad #fire #restaurant Read the full article

Fire at Uxbridge flat

Firefighters tackled a fire at a flat above a shop on Uxbridge High Street this morning just after 7am where part of a four-roomed flat on the third floor of the building was damaged by the fire.   Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus led a woman to safety who was treated on scene by London Ambulance Service crews.   999 Fire Control Officers gave vital fire survival guidance to those inside on how to stay safe before the firefighters arrived.   The cause of the fire is under investigation and was under control by 7:58am.   #uxbridge #highstreet #uxbridgehighstreet #flat #fire Read the full article

Have you ever wondered what you'd get if you mashed up Eliza and Her Monsters with a Courtney Summers novel? Then look no further! I Hope You're Listening is a straightforward little mystery with a focus on the power of the internet and a sweet f/f romance to round things out.

Delia reminded me so much of Eliza Murk with her surliness and her secret podcast that's garnered worldwide attention without anyone in her face-to-face life ever noticing. Her struggle to move forward from witnessing the kidnapping of her childhood best friend is written so gently and I loved that Ryan took the time to show how Sibby's disappearance affected everyone in her community.

To be honest, I didn't find any of the missing person stories all that compelling and the direction Ryan went in solution-wise for each of them weren't that satisfying but all's well that ends well, I suppose. At least he drew attention to the fact that missing person cases involving women of colour are often underreported and underinvestigated.

An interesting book but not one that blew my socks off.

Moreover, the very question of what precise emotions people are actually experiencing remains empirically underinvestigated or, at best, naively researched. There is an unwritten assumption in political life that people know what they want, or at least that politicians can persuade people about what they want. How would a political life play out that includes the idea that people might not know what they want, because they might not know what they feel? What would politics look like if it encompassed this emotional, affective domain? People in general are not that good at recognising or labelling their feelings. While there are differences, this finding has been validated across cultures. Either as a lifelong trait or as a state, people often show poor affective insight because they can’t produce the right inferences about their physiological states – they have poor interoceptive awareness. As a result, we routinely misidentify and mislabel or confuse our emotions.

we’ve got another episode about racism, this one specifically about police underinvestigating crimes against Black women. i do respect the show for going there, and I’ve been pleasantly surprised by the show’s handling of antiblackness before? (I suspect it helps that one of the executive story editors, and the writer for these specific episodes, is a Black woman. I do wonder what the makeup of the writers’ room in general is like but I’m glad she’s in a position of authority)
