A rendering for the Norman Foster-designed JP Morgan headquarters at 270 Park Avenue has been released. Likely the future third tallest building in the city (by roof height), the tower is projected to rise 1,425 feet with 2.5 million gross square feet. The site was home to the 707' Union Carbide Building, which is quickly being dismantled, setting a new record for the tallest building demolished in the world, breaking the record of Manhattan's 612-foot tall #SingerBuilding, demolished in 1968 and replaced with One Liberty Plaza. The Foster + Partners-designed skyscraper will be the first to take advantage of the 2017 Midtown East Rezoning, which allows developers to purchase and transfer air rights from adjacent landmarked buildings – they've already made a deal with St. Bartholomew’s Church to purchase 550,000 square feet of air rights for $20.7 million. Approved by the city, the new skyscraper will have a 10,000-square-foot, privately owned public space, in addition to $42 million in investment towards transit upgrades. Approved by the city, the new #skyscraper will have a 10,000-square-foot, privately owned public space, in addition to $42 million in investment towards transit upgrades. The rendering (above) was first released by New York YIMBY but appears to be Macklowe's Tower Fifth rendering with 270 Park rendered in. Because of this, we are skeptical it is actually an official rendering. Still, it’s likely a realistic view of how the skyscraper will transform the Park Ave skyline. #parkave #270park #architecture #tower #normanfoster #architect #midtown #parkavenue #eastmidtown #rezoning #urbanism #newyorkcity #nycarchitecture #aianyc #realestate #nycrealestate #manhattan #unioncarbide #modernism #modernistarchitecture #airrights #construction #demolition #steelworkers #nycurbanism (at 270 Park Avenue) https://www.instagram.com/p/B3pj1WlngII/?igshid=23m0p6lp6hs0

My artifact is an image about the Bhopal Union Carbide gas tragedy. Throughout this week’s reading we’ve encountered references to Union Carbide and the havoc they wrought in NJ and in the Bhopal area. I pulled this image from the Wikipedia page.
Memorial by Dutch artist Ruth Kupferschmidt for those killed and disabled by the 1984 toxic gas release.

On the night of December 2, 1984, an accident at the Union Carbide pesticide plant in Bhopal, India, released at least 30 tons of a highly toxic gas called methyl isocyanate, as well as a number of other poisonous gases. The pesticide plant was surrounded by shanty towns, leading to more than 600,000 people being exposed to the deadly gas cloud that night. The gases stayed low to the ground, causing victims throats and eyes to burn, inducing nausea, and many deaths. Estimates of the death toll vary from as few as 3,800 to as many as 16,000, but government figures now refer to an estimate of 15,000 killed over the years. Toxic material remains, and 30 years later, many of those who were exposed to the gas have given birth to physically and mentally disabled children. For decades, survivors have been fighting to have the site cleaned up, but they say the efforts were slowed when Michigan-based Dow Chemical took over Union Carbide in 2001. Human rights groups say that thousands of tons of hazardous waste remain buried underground, and the government has conceded the area is contaminated. There has, however, been no long-term epidemiological research which conclusively proves that birth defects are directly related to the drinking of the contaminated water. . . . . . #bhopal #bhopaldisaster #chemicaldisaster #india #history #nonfiction #pesticide #poisons #justice #humanrights #contamination #contaminated #gases #disaster #incident #unioncarbide (presso Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh) https://www.instagram.com/p/CEHJidiFbpW/?igshid=v1x7zras4vx2

Early morning , speculated around 3A.M IST(Indian) , 7MAY2020/12020H.E.C .. Deadly #Styrene #gas leaked from a facility / factory of #LGPolymers at Vizag/ #Vishakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh State, India.
11 people have been killed in the incident including Hundreds have been seriously injured and taken to healthcare facilities , National Disaster and Rescue teams of NDRF have been deployed, more than 5KM area surrounding the facility have been affected and got contaminated , Local Police have launched FIR and investigating the incident according to official report and news media. Many birds , animals and trees also died because of the poisonus gas in the area and local environment got heavily effected. Numerous Dead bodies of humans and dogs were found in the open streets.
This is the second disastrous #chemical leak incident after An American company DOW Chemical Company's chemical facility leaked poisonous gas in Bhopal in 1984. When hundreds and thousands of people got effected and died due to the leak and fell in to long term illnesses and gene defects.
Some news agencies like ABP Ananda , Zee 24 ghanta and news18 Bangla is reporting , this happened due to no maintenance workers been able to come to that facility due to ongoing #COVID19 #Coronavirus Lockdown. And refrigeration equipment failure.
earlier some reports emerged that authorities told the people of contaminated area to stay homes at the begining! My question is why ? When chemical leak or attack of this magnitude happens , the first thing every single authority and people should do is , evacuate evacuate , evacuate. Later NDRF stated that they evacuated around 500 people from the area but it's still not enough. Surely no authority in the area has gas masks or protective gear like hazmat suits to protect all the people of 5km radius from harmful chemicals and it's effects , where the incident happened. By not evacuating enough people , in my opinion they are endangering the lives of those people.
Plus, I also think there was negligence among the LG Polymers employees , who somehow possibly triggered this diaster knowing about the Styrene gas storage in their facility and refrigeration unit not being maintained for almost a month when experts stated it should be contained below a specific temperature set by that refrigeration unit in liquid form.
In the end, those who are responsible must be brought to light.

Thirty-four years after thousands of lives were snuffed out at an instant on the intervening night of December 2-3, 1984, significant number of children still struggling through their disabilities caused by Union Carbide’s toxic Gas tragedy and contaminated groundwater in Bhopal, India. ‘Children disabilities: a forgotten case of Union Carbide’s poison’ a photo story featured in Indian English daily The Hindu, today. Certainly such stories aren’t a delight to see and read on a Sunday morning. I wish I would not have to do such stories in future as tragedy like this should never happen again! This issue is tragic for the affected ones and for all of us. It was a sad and tensed work for me as seeing these children and their families was too emotional for me. At a point I thought to discontinue this photo story. I thought my work is not going make any difference in their life. I went deeper in to emotional pain during a month period I stayed in Bhopal for this story. I persevered with support from my friends and seniors. I hope this work can awake all of us including industries and governments. These children and families must receive a needful support from government. We have to make their life better. I‘m grateful to the families and children who invited me to their homes and talked with me. Around hundreds of people supported me for this story. I am thankful to @sambhavnatrust Chingari Rehabilitation Center, Mr. Satinath Sarangi who explained me each and every detail of whole issue, Rashida Apa and Champadevi Didi for their guidance along with many other activists, staff members of Sambhavna and Chingari, Ian Jarvis for his valuable inputs on day to day basis and making me at ease with motivational talks, and Shankar who was always a call away for any help. My friends Anuj @tiltedlenz , Shravanthi @symbolically_sarcastic and my editor @dinkrish who pushed me further for this work. Two people who are always there for me in guidance and inspiration @gurinderosan and Rahul Sir. @pulitzercenter for supporting the story. #PHOTOGRAPHYFORACTIVISM #unioncarbide #whp #bhopal #instagram #everydayeverywhere #documentaryphotogra #p3top #creativeimagemagazine https://www.instagram.com/p/BtIxbrnHW2H/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=z2o0pgh6vwp1

An article and photo series describing the past and present effects of the disastrous explosion at the Union Carbide pesticide plant in Bhopal, India, which Altman (American Petrotopia, Aeon, 2017) alludes to in her essay. The span of time represented in the photos reminds us of the permanence of toxic harm that both Altman and Liboiron conveyed.

270 Park will be the tallest building to be intentionally demolished in the world! Last week demolition permits were filed for the Union Carbide building at 270 Park Avenue, which will be replaced by JP Morgan Chase with a new 70-story tower designed by Foster & Partners. Due to its location, the building will not be demolished using explosives. Instead, it will be covered in cocoon netting and disassembled piece by piece, first removing harmful materials, then working inside out to remove everything from doors and fixtures to the steel structural columns and concrete slabs. JP Morgan's new skyscraper will take advantage of the recent #Midtown East Rezoning, which allows developers to purchase and transfer air rights from adjacent landmarked buildings – they ave already made a deal with St. Bartholomew’s Church to purchase 550,000 square feet of air rights for $20.7 million. Currently, no renderings have been released for the new tower, which will break the world record of NYC's 612-foot tall #SingerBuilding, demolished in 1968 and replaced with One Liberty Plaza. #unioncarbide #jpmorgan #270park #modernism #modernistarchitecture #moderninteriordesign #architecture #nychistory #midtowneast #airrights #parkave #seagrambuilding #leverhouse #urbanism #nycurbanism #urbanist #historicpreservation #lpcnyc (at Union Carbide) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bs55wmZlkuY/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=a5jq7tsopb4x

Children try camera in Atal Ayub Nagar, one of most affected areas. Playing with children always makes me feel calm in otherwise hectic, tensed and emotionally lonely day during such difficult project. Recently I have finished a photo essay about children affected by toxic gas methylisocyanate (MIC) one of the most toxic gasses we have, then and now, spewed from the factory owned by the US chemical giant Union Carbide (UCC) in 1984 in Bhopal, India. This photo project is supported by Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting and soon it is going to be published by a major English daily of India. #children #childrenwithcameras #documentaryphotography #instavideo #unioncarbide #bhopal #whp #bestoftheday #videooftheday #instagram (at Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bs21hfaHTvh/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=xz0ueqqtkr7z
