Test Printing
Quality of images all looks good, the only thing is that the printers in the library aren't good. I will definitely be asking uniprint to print my final outcome as the quality will be better. Thicker paper will also be better so the book is less flimsy. I need to look at paper weights to progress with printing.

Week 7
Paper Research
For the prototype I made, the card was 160gsm, it was a good quality but I want it a bit thicker so 180-200gsm, so that it can fit in the normal printer. I had a look at Uni but there wasn't all the colours I wanted. I looked online and found some paper on Amazon that should be good, if it isn't I have a backup plan of using the Uni's paper but the orange colour may have to be pink or yellow. The paper doesn't arrive until Monday, so if it isn't right, I will look at some stationary shops (I already looked at UniPrint).

Knitting and crocheting have rules just like embroidery; you decide, which ones you follow.
I've heard people say weird st ff about knitting socks, about yarn quality and all - my favourite pair was originally store bought wool socks, which i frogged and re-did. My grandma had almost had a heart attack when she saw me. "Wrong needles! Where did you get this yarn? Has it been used once before? Then you must'nt use it!"
🙄 who cares. I loved my socks. 🥰
Also fashion has got SO MUCH worse over the past decade. I have shirts from that time and they look so much better still than new ones?! The new ones are ALL almost see through?! And these are some uniprinted, regular t-shirts made of cotton. They should NOT be almost seethrough! And yet they are!
I try to speak against the whole "guilt about consumption" thing in environmentalism but god damn if it doesn't Get Me sometimes (all the time)
I've been putting off buying new clothes for like a year because I just feel bad buying stuff but it's getting to a very bad situation as I am running out of pants that are warm and have few enough holes to be decent to wear in public.
I'm trying to mend some of them by embroidery but that's very slow and they're so poor quality to begin with that running embroidery floss through them stretches new holes in them.
I bought my one and only decent pair of work pants when I was still recovering from The Situation a couple years ago and had lost a really unhealthy amount of weight, so now they're starting to feel too tight and hard to move around in.
I've read articles about sustainability where people talked about downsizing their wardrobe to just like 4 outfits, and I don't comprehend it! The fewer clothes you have the more you have to wear them. I bought a new carhartt hoodie at the beginning of this semester, from the mens section too since those tend to be a little better quality, and I have been wearing it as an outer layer for maybe a month and a half and I have washed it ONCE and it is pilling like crazy. Like there's pills all over it not just in high-friction areas, everywhere! It gives it this awful rough scraggy texture and it makes me very sad.

Test printing I have found lots of problems that need to be solved
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Things to change:
Pngs so the black works
Trees and branches pixelly
The line up isn't good on the back, so I may have to find out if I can change the binding or not. I need to speak to uniprint again tomorrow and find out, becuase the alignment is a big issue.

Look book with cover
Here's the final outcome. The cover was a pain to get as it took UNIPRINT 4 hours to print it off.
There's a mistake with it too as its too small leaving it so you can see the crop marks still.
I am unable to get another one as I do not have the time.
I do think that the cover looks nice on the look book regardless.

FMP - Print - Final Book
I printed the inside pages of the book, and then left the cover and the binding process up to uniprint. In hindsight, the printers gave me so many issues that I should’ve just let uniprint do the whole thing, but overall I’m still happy with how the book turned out:

Lay-Flat Binding
uses cold glue instead of hot glue, that is thinly applied to the spine
once dry the cover is attached to the end papers on each side of the spine
the spine of the cover is not attached to the book block
book opens completely flat across the centre fold - images can be run across both halves of the spread - gives more opportunity for design
easier to use
Tumblr media
I emailed uniprint to see if they could lay flat binding, but they don't have the setting for it on the binding machine they use. I emailed printroom and Joseph is currently away so I will have to wait until he is back to see how this concept can progress.

Tutorial
Due to feeling unwell I ended up missing my tutorial which was something I was very adamant on attending as I felt sort of lost with what to push next. I was able to email my tutor Mark images of my packages and notes for them which Mark read and gave me the feedback that I needed.
Tumblr media
this feedback was incredibly helpful in guiding me into what to do next to progress within this project. I need to get my design done and finalised whilst creating thumbnails for my poster this weekend so I can be on top of everything. With the feedback that Mark has supplied I feel confident that I am able to complete this now - with some stress.
Mark mentioned that out of the designs I showed the Grungy style one, inspired by Chris Ashworth, was the one to develop and I think that that's the one that I am happy to move forward with. It does however need a lot of development for it to be improved and work. One thing that was mentioned that I had never really considered was the fact that it needs to look like a package people want to eat from (ie you don't want it to look "dirty") This is something that I will definitely consider when developing the design idea.
Adding colour was something else that was mentioned. I was going to leave it the black and white but I think that it might work better with colour so I will develop it like so. I am a big fan of messy grungy style of design so I am happy to move forward with this design.
I was also stuck with the material to use as the window into the design. I got my answers her with the suggestion of Acetate that I may be able to get from the UniPrint shop on Campus.
The tutorial here was very helpful in the progression of design ideas.

Binding and Paper stock
I spoke with Mark during my tutorial where he mentioned they do not have the tools to do the binding that I want done. So I was led to UNIPRINT the print shop within the university. I was able to find out that they can do the binding that I want done and I got a quote for it in order to understand the pricing for everything.
The Binding itself will cost £4
I also got a chance to look into the different paper stock in order to find something that’ll work for my designs as the normal weight would be too light and easily breakable.
Cover and Back - 160 GSM Silk
Pages - 120 GSM Uncoated
I will be purchasing them once I get a better understanding of my layout. I may have to upsize to A3 which might change the price of the paper but that won't effect too much.
