NOTETAKING 101
In my country, the first uni semester usually starts at October (which means very soon) and i’m more that excited!.However, i can’t help but have some concerns. As a first year, i have no knowledge of the whole “University” concept, that’s why i’m currectly browsing on internet about uni hacks/tips and useful advice from other uni/college students.
Here are some EXTREMELY IMPORTANT notetaking tips by The Academic Success Center
BEFORE CLASS
~ Identify main concepts and terms you expect to learn
~ Write questions you hope the lecture will answer
DURING CLASS
~ Take notes in your own words
~ Use consistent abbreviations and symbols
~ Answer any questions you wrote before class
~ Capture main ideas and sufficient detail (definitions, examples, images)
~ Make and visualize connections between concepts
AFTER CLASS
~ Make time to return to your notes after class
~ Transform your notes into a new format (e.g., visual, mind map, quiz questions, study guide)
~ Summarize your notes in writing, verbally, or—better yet—both!
~ Connect current class notes to concepts from the previous classes/weeks
~ Compare notes with a classmate to catch missed info
NOTE TAKING MYTH BUSTERS
MYTH: All you need to do is take notes during class
FOR REALS: Notes are only as good as what you do with them after class. Learning happens when you put notes to use. Here are a few ways to commit notes to memory:
• Transform your notes into a new format (summary, visual, diagram, etc.)
• Explain your notes and main points aloud to someone else
•Write possible test questions based on your notes
•Create a study guide that you add to each week with new information and connections you’ve made
MYTH: You should write down everything you hear in lecture
FOR REALS: Don’t do that. You might end up tuning out content if you only focus on transcription. Or you might get super stressed if you miss a word. Instead…
• Listen for key points
• Translate ideas into your own words
• Listen 80% of the time and write 20% of the time
• If you know you have a question about a concept, don’t stress. Mark it, so you can review it later with other materials or in office hours
MYTH: Quantity = Quality
FOR REALS: Excessive note taking may not be quality note taking. Check your balance between listening, learning, and note taking by asking…
• Am I focused on comprehension during lecture (rather than on transcription)? • Can I recall and explain what I learned after lecture?
• Do my notes have enough main points and detail for me to use them later in a new way? (e.g. writing a summary, drawing a mind map)

Be a better student.
In my first post, I wanted to address a topic in which I feel most university students can relate to, it certainly was and still is a concern for me.
If you feel overwhelmed by all the extra baggage that comes with being a uni student, you’re definitely not alone. Keeping on top of deadlines while finding time to attend all those socials can get a little too much for even the best of us. Having nearly completed my third year of university, even I’m still trying to figure out the best way to do things and i’m far from the perfect student. Keep reading if you want to find out how you can make your student life a little less stressful.
Me first ! The most important piece of advice I can give you is to put yourself first. You have goals, both personal and professional and it’s important that you set yourself up to achieve them because at the end of the day, that’s why you chose to go to uni. Know where you want to be and what you have to achieve by this time next month; giving yourself small monthly goals will keep you on track and feeling that much more motivated to keep going, nobody wants to be in the same place in a months time, specially not in terms of uni. Simple habits such as keeping a to do list and ticking things off as you complete them will give you that sense of fulfilment. I personally like to start the year by investing in a cute planner, something that uplifts my mood and make me want to write in it every day, I use colours and quotes and cross off my goals as I achieve them. It’s important to have something that drives your passion and makes you feel good inside.
Clutter attracts clutter This applies to anything and everything in your life. Your workspace, wardrobe, handbag, laptop, car, bed etc. All of these thing need to be looked after. You will be surprised by how much a clean work space can help keep a clean mind. Personally I find it difficult to concentrate when my room is left untidy or my workspace is cluttered. This doesn’t mean you have to clean everything religiously every day, I certainly don’t. Start small, do your washing before it piles up, have allocated spaces for everything, put that curling iron away once you’ve used it, these little things will make your life so much easier and save you the stress of spending a whole day cleaning when you could be studying for next weeks test.
Balance Everyone needs a break sometimes. Your wellbeing is more important than anything so take time to enjoy yourself with friends, if you need alone time, take yourself out to that cute cafe and treat yourself, go on a shopping spree. There isn’t more to say about this than don’t spend all your time studying but don’t spend all your time partying.
So whilst there are no written rules to being the perfect student, always remember to do what makes you feel good and keep those goals in mind.
Lots of love

Paper Writing and Honesty
"Had I more time to devote to this project, I would have looked into [Author]'s work [name of work]."
"My sources led me to [Author]'s work on [topic]. Unfortunately, by the time I discovered their work, I no longer had enough time to devote to more research."
"[Author]'s work on [topic] would have enriched this paper, unfortunately I couldn't access said work in time for this project."
"Were I to conduct this inquiry project again, or revisit the topic in the future, I'd start with [Author]'s work [Name of work]."
The above are loose examples of phrases I've included in the conclusion of inquiry projects and/or term papers in the last year. This year I got the best grades I've ever gotten in my life. 2/5 of my courses came back with an A+ overall and a 3rd came back as an A.
Most professors aren't expecting some groundbreaking thesis from an undergraduate student. Nobody is expecting an undergraduate to conduct new research and create their own results. Most of the time, the term papers are to show what you have learned. You haven't earned the right to speak--you do not have a degree and thus are not considered an expert in anything. What they're looking for is your ability to use what experts have said in order to support a coherent statement/opinion/theory.
Sometimes stuff happens. You run out of time to devote to more research. You simply do not have the time to read everything there is to read on your chosen topic. There may be hundreds of articles on your topic and you realize, too late, that an article you didn't read/use would have been perfect for your project. If you don't have the option of an extention on the due date, or simply do not have time to negotiate that in the first place, mention it in your conclusion "I wanted to get into/use [work] but I couldn't". You're being honest and you're showing your professor that you did your research and just happened to miss out on an amazing resource. You knew of its existence and knew it's value--well done, you get points for that.
Professors are humans too. They were once students, just like you. If your professor is worth their salt as a human being, they'll understand that stuff happens. Sometimes the resource simply isn't available. Maybe it was checked out of the library and you couldn't get your hands on another copy. Maybe the copyright on the work is so strict that you couldn't access it. Perhaps you only stumbled upon the work from it being referenced in an article you had and at that point it was too late for you to dive into reading, comprehending, analyzing, and cross-referencing another work. Research takes time and plucking relevant quotes from scholarly articles takes time. Ensuring that your chosen quotes from resources support each other and/or your thesis takes even more time. If your professor is not an asshole, they'll understand, but you've got to tell them. Sometimes, even if the professor understands your situation, they're obligated to grade ONLY what is in your project. One thing that I've been told by my professors is that there is 1 surefire way for them to be fired--if their grading is called into question and deemed unprofessional. It doesn't matter if they're snorting cocaine between classes. In that case, they may be fired once the story makes it to the media and it's less trouble to fire the prof than it is to deal with all the complaints and lawsuits and whatever else. However, if a professor half-asses their grading they could be given the ax. It doesn't matter if you email the professor to explain your situation--they're not allowed to mark your email.
When in doubt--see your professor. Office hours are there for a reason and more than one professor has told me that they welcome students coming to see them. They're paid to be at the university regardless and having a student come in to visit or ask questions is much more enjoyable than hours of solitaire or tedious research for their own projects. Talk to your professors and be honest.

Code Design - #Unitips 01

Paper Writing/Citations
Lots of people will tell you that completing the references/bibliography is the most annoying part. It's not hard to do (well, maybe in 1st and 2nd year if you didn't learn how to do a proper one in High School), but it's time consuming.
1) Figure out what citation format/style your course and/or prof prefers you to write in: -APA -MLA -Chicago There are more than just these 3 (I'm sure) but I've found that these 3 are the most common. In my University, Chicago is preferred for History courses and the Social Sciences lean more toward APA. I’ve heard that literary courses (e.g. English, Writing) tend to encourage MLA. I use APA and am lucky enough that most of my professors are cool with whatever citation style we use, as long as it’s consistent throughout the paper.
2) Practice the citation style--every single time you get a resource, look up how to cite it. A quick Google search of "How to cite a book APA" or "How to cite a scholarly journal APA" or "How to cite a primary source Chicago style" etc. "How to cite a YouTube video APA" "How to cite a quote in-text APA" etc. Cite the videos you watch for fun, cite your bathroom reader, cite your manga--whatever you have on you, practice citing it in your chosen format (better to screw up on your own practice than screw up on a paper and run into a nasty prof that won't overlook it). There may be a resource available at your Uni where you can go in and learn how to cite or get help. If all else fails go to your professor before the paper is due and ask them if they could show you how to cite and check over your citations. Most professors are willing to do this, just be honest.
3) The 1st thing you should do before writing a paper--get your thesis down, and cite everything as you find the articles. It is WAY easier to cite the journals the moment you find them and type them into your word processing document than to come back at the end of your paper and try to find that exact article again to grab details like who the author is, what year the thing was written in, what journal it was published in and which volume and issue, location of the publisher etc. Do it right the first time and then you have it--if you end up not using the article in your paper you can simply delete the citation.
The first thing I do is my references/citations. Then I refine my thesis, pluck helpful quotes from the articles I've read, and then figure out how to connect all of them to support and/or refine my thesis. The citation is done and I just move the cursor back up to the top to write my paper. Citations aren't difficult, just time-consuming due to formatting. Writing the paper, figuring out your phrasing, and trying to figure out what your thesis is--those are the more difficult parts. However, once you get started you're usually on a roll and it'd suck to start that only to have to stop due to formatting citations.
