Concept Albums About Future and Technology

Music is always about looking forward, hence the fascination with concept albums and themed songs about future and technology. Usually, it doesn’t always work as well as the artists hopes, for whatever reason. In my definition, a pop album is themed or a concept if there are any of the following factors present: interludes, character names, pretentious quotes that will age badly that are conveniently located on the Wiki page, and a sudden focus and discussion with the making of the album. These albums will be rated on how well they stick to the theme rather than quality alone because we all can rank these from best to worst, right?

Bionic by Christina Aguilera: Interludes (yes), character (alter egos), pretentious quotes (yes), sudden focus on creation (yes). Bionic and Not Myself Tonight feel like introductions for sci fi projects gone mad. Elastic Love, Woohoo, and Desnudate sound very detached and icy. Glam/Prima Donna/I Hate Boys/Bobblehead/Vanity sound like some villain montage song. Don’t even get me started on genuine mind screeds Birds of Prey and Little Dreamer. With all the collaborators, I know more about the making of this album than the modern history of Armenia. Overall grade: B-

Discipline by Janet Jackson: Interlude (yes), character (Keiko), pretentious quotes (I wish), sudden focus (hell no). Futuristic interludes, electropop sounds with intentional overproduction (ie- Feedback, Rock With U, So Much Betta, Rollercoaster) help this album out, but Janet has done futurism before, with the video for If, Scream, and the song topic for Empty, but by 2008, Janet ran out of creative juice, unless if you count a 4 word interlude. Imagine an album with commentary on social media and the digital gap by class. Oh well, Janet took a much needed break and joined the social media era in 2015. C+

Fanmail by TLC: Interludes (yes), characters (yes), pretentious quote (no), focus (no). Fanmail, Lovesick, and Silly Ho are the main electronic songs on the album compared to some of the adult contemporary ballads. I’m actually disappointed that we don’t know more about the making of this album, because from the little futuristic stuff we got, they did great with it. The Fanmail chorus is so simple and poetic but all the ballads and midtempos.... no ma’am Pam. Can Drake let them open for him? C

Dirty Computer by Janelle Monae: Interludes (yes), character (yes), quote (yes), focus (no). Okay, so Jabnelle’s whole career is this but I know Dirty Computer the most from her albums. The album itself isn’t that sci fi, but she put a whole damn movie for us, no paywall attached, in 2018. I’ve seen other people say it’s not really a clear concept album, but with her video and other albums, Janelle gets a lifetime B+.

Poppy.Computer by Poppy: Interludes (no), character (yes), quote (no), focus (no)- The lyrics are literally about technology and even if this Adult Swim concept of a pop star didn’t give us insight about our technology use, she got the rough idea down. Personally, I like her dancehall and Mac DeMarco karaoke more, and even more when her creative director isn’t being an alleged creep. C

Metallic Butterfly by Princess Nokia: Interludes (yes), character (yes), quote (no), focus (no). Yes, I swear I don’t make my posts planned around whether or not I can include this project in. When people think of music’s biggest transformers, Cher, Madonna, and Lady Gaga come to mind. Destiny Frasqueri should also be on your list. Going from rap to house to emo t soul, Princess Nokia’s 2014 trip hop mixtape Metallic Butterfly sounds equally 1998, 2002, and 2192. This time, she was a coding expert hacktivist searching for a place for all girls to succeed and be themselves. Fortunately, each time Princess Nokia gives us a crash course in her influences, so we can learn about all her interests from jungle music (the electronic genre) to Dragon Ball Z. Princess Nokia shows us the necessity of concept albums in the streaming era. A+

Black Eyed Peas’ The End/The Beginning: Interlude (no), character (no), quote (no), focus (no). Although not a true concept album, it was one of the biggest successes of the EDM era. They were originally more old school influence wise, but now the Peas have upgraded that for futuristic references and imagery, making this project feel more cohesive than it should be. Still, no characters, interludes, and messy quotes about the making of the album, so that doesn’t make the basicness feel any better. Probably just listen to The Gorillaz instead. D+

But You Caint Use My Phone by Erykah Badu: Interlude (no), character (no), quotes (yes), focus (no): This is a mixtape with songs revolving around cellphones and communication. Erykah updated her sound to include more electronic stuff. Even if she was mostly goofing around, it was still fun. One highlight was a snarky voicemail. C

Ciara: The Evolution by Ciara: Interlude (yes), character (no), quote (yes), focus (no). While not technically an album about the future, it’s about evolving in different categories like dance and music. Some, like fashion, only have 1 song, while others have more dedication to the concept. Having an album about your growth at 2 albums is premature at best, especially if you’re still known as the Princess of Crunk in 2018. D

Your homework is to listen to Billy Idol’s Cyberpunk, another concept album about future and technology, because I certainly will not at the moment.

1. What’s the most depressing movie you’ve ever watched?Definitely My Life As A Zucchini. It’s a really sweet claymation movie about children and found family that, while it still has a happy ending, made me cry so hard and still makes me cry whenever I rewatch it. It lost the Best Animated Feature Oscar to Zootopia in 2016, and it’s a robbery that has me reeling to this day. (It’s on Netflix right now, go watch it everyone!)

2. What’s the most disturbing movie you’ve ever watched?Ahh I haven’t seen a lot of horror movies so I guess Hereditary? It’s the most visually disturbing I’ve seen, at least. Rosemary’s Baby would probably take most psychologically disturbing.

3. An actor/actress you’ve seen in more than 8 movies? Name the movies.If I’m cheating; Emma Watson - Harry Potter films + Beauty and the BeastIf I’m not cheating; Jim Carrey - the Truman Show, the Mask, Dumb and Dumber, How The Grinch Stole Christmas, Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, Batman Forever, Liar Liar, A Series of Unfortunate Events, Man On The Moon, Ace Venture: When Nature Calls, The Cable Guy, etc. etc. I know this comes off like I’m a really big Jim Carrey stan, but I’m not, it’s my Dad…so I’ve seen a lot of his stuff lol.

4. A film you could watch on repeat for the rest of your life?Moulin Rouge! I liked this movie so much when I saw it that I watched it again the next day and again a week later. It’s a lot of fun, has a lot of hidden meaning, and is overall just a very good movie with a bangin’ sound track, and I will defend it until I die.

5. What’s the very first film you remember watching?The Rescuers. From Disney’s Animation Bronze Age, it certainly fits right in with Disney’s trend of darker and more implicitly grounded stories, and it holds a lot of nostalgia for me. I haven’t seen it in a while, but I used to watch it all the time as a kid. It was probably my second favorite movie, behind Robin Hood.

8. Which book would you like to see adapted into a film?This is a hard one because most of the books I want adapted have already been adapted! I suppose, and this is cheating, The Handmaid’s Tale. I want a movie with a female director and a female writer and Margaret Atwood as a consultant!

9. The most aesthetically pleasing movie you’ve ever watched?The Grand Budapest Hotel, easily.

10. What’s your favourite movie director?François Truffaut! I know that sounds pretentious but he’s genuinely one of my biggest inspirations, it’s really clear from his interviews that he understands film very deeply and I admire how he lived through the transition from black and white to color films. He was a great writer and a great director and it is truly a loss that he has passed.

11. Your favourite movie genre?I’m more partial to film movements than genres, but I do love a good drama.

12. A movie that holds a special place in your heart?Just, any Winnie the Pooh movie. I had a very personal connection to the books as a kid - I had a whole ass collection of ALL of A. A. Milne’s works for children that I must have read dozens of times, and I would always cry when I finished it, and the movies were no different. True story, when I went to go see the first part of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows in theaters, I almost debated skipping it to see the new Winnie the Pooh movie instead. I didn’t end up skipping Harry Potter, but I rented the Winnie the Pooh movie when it got released on Redbox, and I did still cry a ridiculous amount at the finish. Alllll through the credits.

13. Your favourite comedy film?Burn After Reading! I have no idea why people don’t like this movie, it is absolutely hilarious! Fun fact, the Coen brothers wrote this while they were writing No Country For Old Men to destress, which is about the most iconic thing I’ve ever heard.

14. A music video you would love to see developed into a film?Cheating but, hey, Gorillaz film! Please! Please oh my god I would go and see a Gorillaz movie SO hard!

15. A film everyone loves but you hate?Pacific Rim. I’m…still writing my Letterboxd review for this movie because I wanna make sure I don’t get anything wrong but I still want to express the level at which I didn’t really enjoy it. I think the plot got hyped up for me wayyy too much, because I felt that it was a competent mech/monster battle movie, but not so much a compelling action/adventure drama movie. Ehh. It looked very good, at least.

16. A film you love but everyone else hates?EVERYONE KNOWS THIS…..Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice. It was a good movie and even if I won’t defend the DCEU on other stuff anymore I will always defend BvS on the grounds of it being a good fucking movie that got absolutely crucified for no damn reason.

17. Which cinematic universe would you like to live in?Harry Potter Cinematic Universe, baby! They made it into movies so it counts, I’m a wizard ‘Arry!

18. What’s your favourite biopic?Amadeus. I know it’s more fictionalized than some other biopics, but it’s really a stunning movie in every possible way. It’s honestly an incredible watch, especially for me, someone who is bad at and thus has an aversion towards History and heavily historically based movies lmao.

19. Mainstream movies or indie movies?Indie movies any day of the week. Mainstream movies always let me down and usually have a scandal involved. Indie movies let me down a lot less and usually look nicer and have better writing. The trade-off of less big names for higher quality is worth it.

20. Old movies or contemporary movies?This is really hard! I’m gonna say contemporary movies because more of my favorite films are more recent, UNLESS it’s something from the French New Wave in which case old movies win out.

21. A film with an amazing soundtrack?Juno or Lady Bird are both amazing movies in their own right, and they both have a fabulous sound track. Lady Bird’s sountrack is a little more varied than Juno’s, but it’s all good stuff.

UCLA Radio’s Best of 2017 - Music and Genre Directors

This year, UCLA Radio’s music director and genre directors compiled a list of their favorite releases this past year. Take a peek and explore some of our favorite albums of this past year.

Alison Chi - Music Director

1. SZA - Ctrl

I don’t know a single person who doesn’t like SZA’s sophomore album Ctrl. There are so few albums that can capture people’s attention these days - it’s all about the singles and never the album as a whole but something about Ctrl is cohesive from start to finish. The way each song weaves into each other is seamless and you’ll truly be rewarded if you sit down and listen to the album straight through. Is there even a single bad song on this album?

Megan Hullander - Rock Genre Director

1. King Gizzard & The Flying Wizard - Flying Microtonal Banana

King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard’s Flying Microtonal Banana was the first in a series of five albums promised to be released in 2017 (one of which has still yet to come) including a concept album ridden with the drama of human and non-human emotions, a jazzy collaboration with Mild High Club, and an album given as a gift to fans - the rights of which are “owned” by all. Flying Microtonal Banana is unique in that the band customized their instruments in effort to find spaces between existing tones, or “microtones.” The album is named for one of these instruments which does, in fact, look quite similar to a banana.

Gabe Cortina - Rock Genre Director

1. Limp Wrist - Facades

Featuring Martin from Los Crudos on vocals as well as members of Hail Mary, Devoid of Faith, By the Throat, and Kill the Man Who Questions, the versatility of Limp Wrist sound has never been more apparent. Identifying as queercore, the band has a fast hardcore sound and lyrical themes concerning gay identity politics. The mixing of album is something which also stood out to me, it’s able to polished without sounding over produced. Martin’s vocal style perfectly matches the killer riffs and speedy drums in both intensity and aggression. Halfway through this album, the band’s sound switches to a disco-ey almost dark-wave- techno sound which they pull of with perfection. This album is solid and I highly recommend it to both longtime fans of punk and people who are looking for an introduction to punk music alike.

1. Beach House - B-Sides and Rarities

This compilation happened to be release on a day where I had only gotten around an hour of sleep the night before, and I cried within one minute of the first track. It’s Beach House at their most dreamy, their most blaring, their most haunting. Old tracks with new renditions and fresh ones meld into something spellbinding that doesn’t require the logistical unity of a formal album. B-Sides and Rarities has been on a weekly rotation for me for the entire second half of 2017, and probably for the entirety of 2018, unless they release something else for me to cry to during my morning routine.

1. Wolf Alice - Visions Of A Life

Looking back at this past September, I remember sitting in my apartment late at night, counting down until midnight when Wolf Alice’s second record Visions of a Life would be released. I haven’t ever heard anything quite like Visions of a Life before, and I think the reason it resonates so much with me is the way it perfectly encompasses the feelings that come with the uncertainty of young adulthood, and the feelings of life in general - love, anger, sadness, extreme joy, and everything in between. The album digs itself into darkness, but at its core, lies a piece of work that is ambitious, honest, and a solid listen from start to finish.

Alex Saakyan - Pop Genre Director

1. Lana Del Rey - Lust For Life

With an album cover that graces a smile, cheek to cheek of Lana Del Rey, it is no surprise as to why this record has been nicknamed as Del Rey’s first ‘happy album.’ Retiring from the ‘sad girl’ aesthetic of her previous records, Del Rey delivers an optimistic and authentic approach to her music. With tracks like ‘When the World Was at War’ and ‘God Bless America’ we see Del Rey take a more honest approach from her Americana aesthetic as she speaks of the hard times people in this country face. With tracks like ‘Get Free’ she delivers her mission statement: “Finally, I’m crossing the threshold/From the ordinary world/To the reveal of my heart,” She’s honest, she’s free, with a much optimism and a lust for life.

Christian Wright - World Genre Director

1. Jay Som - Everybody Works

Melina Duterte’s sophomore album is a bedroom production jewel. Every song, incredibly cohesive as a whole, traverses the beautifully lush sonic worlds her mind seemingly conjures up. That’s not to say the ten tracks that span Everybody Works are simple happenstances that fall together nicely; they definitely sound like labors of love. Rather her voice, certain of itself, transmits to the listener so powerfully, making sense out of all the disorder that comes with self-doubt and personal struggle. “Won’t forget to climb,” she sings on E.W’s. final track, “For Light,” beautifully steering the qualms of trying to make it in this world.

1. Nick Hakim - Green Twins

Nick Hakim blurs the line between psychedelic, soul, funk, rock, and jazz with his debut album, Green Twins. With lush melodies to command his songs and a spacey approach to recording production, Hakim creates his own unique sound and challenges the notions and implications of a music genre. With a brand of sound that emulates Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Hakim's soundscape fills in colorful textures with his diverse instrumentation on top of steady, pulse-like rhythms. From spacey, reflective post-R&B rock songs like "Bet She Looks Like You" to jazzy, rhythmic pulses in "Miss Chew" and slow, soulful ballads like "Needy Bees," Green Twins has just about everything you need in a debut album from an artist as complex as Nick Hakim.

Beliz Urkmez - Electronic Genre Director

1. Lorde - Melodrama

For me, Lorde's music means emotion in its purest, most honest form. Her sophomore album, Melodrama, captures her youth, her growth, her path to becoming a woman of her own and loving herself and all the ephemeral experiences in between. Mastering her craft, Lorde finds a cohesion between her atmospheric synths, harmonies, beats and the bittersweet wisdom in her lyrics. Especially in "Liability," a beautiful piano-ballad where she sings, "I understand, I'm a liability/ Get you wild, make you leave/ I'm a little much for everyone." Lorde is truly one of a kind and Melodrama proves she is one of the best artists today.

1. Kiran Leonard - Derevaun Seraun

This is probably the most sonically beautiful album I’ve listened to in years. 22-year-old Kiran Leonard blends voice, piano, and string trio into an album with each movement representing a different piece of literature, seeing as the album was written to celebrate the re-opening of Manchester’s Central Library. The album is intensely personal, and raw, as Leonard’s voice is in the spotlight, accompanied by mournful accompaniment. I recommend this album endlessly.

I do take lenghts to get out of my confort zone and talk to people though, but I always feel like it’s a risk involved, for everyone. H- horror yes or no? Y E S. Favorite genre when I was a child. Still one of my all times favorite things to read and to read about. (And maybe to create? In the future?) Ehh. I get along great with my dad although we don’t talk much, and i get along as well with my mom, just wish she’d realise i’m not a kid still lol.

The older i get the better we get along i guess, although there’s some things we’ll never agree on

I like Spanish accents a lot? I have a lot of Spanish & Portuguese friends and love their accent when they speak english :p Also Russian accents?? Don’t ask me why. I just really like them lol

Japan! I really want to go to Japan. And USA? And Canada? Like, big-city places because I’ve never been to one ;u;

Honestly? I’d probably leave it, OR if there’s any shops nearby, I’d take it to a store clerk, since the person that lost it is more likely to go into a nearby shop and ask if they’ve seen their wallet than to a police department, I think? idk

It wasn’t exactly my decision, but switching schools back in middle school. Would have never met my tiny best friend otherwise, or met some other amazing people & teachers

At a supermarket. And they still wouldn’t believe me until I showed them my university card as well. (Sad thing is it wasn’t even for me lol)
