“Merlin? Is he hurt? Why didn’t you say so first, what happened-” “No,” Gwen says, and now she’s wringing her own hands in front of her, biting her lip and reminding him strongly of the maid she’d been five years ago. “No, Arthur.” Her voice is soft, it’s too soft, and Arthur braces himself, feeling his entire body go cold, as he expects her to tell him that while he’s been unconscious Merlin has been killed. “The sorcerer,” Gwen breathes in deeply, obviously gathering herself, “the sorcerer is Merlin.” Arthur’s mind goes blank.

 After defeating the Saxons and routing Morgana's army at Camlann, Merlin finds and brings Arthur back to Camelot's army, revealing his magic in the process.

That leaves Gwen and the others with the issue of how to respond to learning their friend is a sorcerer. And with what they will tell Arthur when he wakes from his wounds back in Camelot. Also, someone should probably figure out what to do with Morgana, because she can't stay in Camelot's dungeons forever.

normally im not into unrequited love that STAYS unrequited because it makes me sad but honestly the concept of unrequited mergwaine with gwaine being in love with merlin/having the FATTEST crush on merlin but knowing it will never be reciprocated because of merlin's undying devotion to arthur is just all kinds of angstily delicious to me

I really like mergwaine but all the fics I see are leadup to merthur or angst/unrequited. Do you know any good ones that aren't miserable?

I am going to turn you over to the expert on Merwaine, @the-astro-ace, who is a major Merwaine shipper and can point you in the right direction! I know I’ve read some cool ones, but I can’t remember their titles off the top of my head...

However, there is The Five Kingdoms by winterhill that I think you’ll enjoy. It’s got some truly excellent character development for Gwaine--and requited love.

Oh, and how could I forget Curses of Camelot!

I mean... expose me why don’t you? Merthur is the one I cry about in a dark room. Mergwaine is the one I stay up all night thinking about. Mergana is the one I will rant about endlessly to anyone who’ll listen. Merlot is the one I silently entertain, but can’t for long because I’ll fall down a rabbit hole. I just think his character was WASTED in that department. There could have been so many more interesting canonical story lines about him falling for people, not just subtext and forcing Colin Morgan to carry the show with pretty eyes and insane acting. He could have grown so much more. The giddy way Merlin acts with Freya, the hidden smiles, the TRUST, I wanted to see that so much more than we did, and I wanted to see it ACKNOWLEDGED. Just think about the angst we could have had if Mergana had shared one stolen kiss. Think about the extended COMPLEXITY. I think the writers were being lazy by having him be SO focused on Arthur nearer the end, without it being stated that it was romantic. If it was platonic, FINE (not really but that’s my own bias lol) but give Merlin at least more than ONE EPISODE where he explores something romantic then. Eoin said himself that Gwaine feels an unrequited love for Merlin... EXPLORE THAT. Gwen’s crush on Merlin? Where the fuck did that go? Like at least confront it. Mithian- she loved Merlin! They all loved him, and there’s no WAY he didn’t attract more people romantically than was let on. Arthur and Merlin were not platonic in my opinion- and I could defend that solely on the amount of lip staring that went on, let alone the “hold me”, the LOYALTY, the soulmates talk. But having Merlin pine away- when it’s not ever SIGNIFICANTLY clear that he was pining romantically- was just lazy writing. Even when he was flirting with Nimueh, that was crushed into five minutes before they went NOPE THATS THE END OF THAT. Kill the love interest off, sure, used to that, I don’t care. Just let him love, and let him be loved, and let us SEE that. The Gwaine/Merlin/Arthur dynamic is amazing. I wish that had been opened up more. Gwaine always reminded me of Captain Jack (DW), and the BBC had no issues with him being into guys. And they can’t throw the “it’s medieval” excuse around because they have no race or gender issues acknowledged so sexuality issues wouldn’t fit either. Like make it make sense! Wow I really didn’t realise how much I cared about this until you opened up this can of worms, but this probably won’t be the end of this rant, lol. Hope that is some form of an answer!
