#ReturnOfAdam #DSM #RP Part Two

Colt Things hadn't gone as planned, Sammy had been cremated and he hadn't bothered telling a bunch of people he couldn't handle it. He'd been buried out on the property under an Oak tree. John was off on a hunt down in Colombia and couldn't make it back. And his Dad had bailed without a word leaving Colt to deal with it. So the remaining Winchesters were pretty far from being close and he, in particular, knew that he'd have to get his shit together for his kids if nothing else. Asher was a big help and he was happy but somethings you a gotta break on your own. His /issues/ could get pretty severe so he'd chosen to start seeking professional help. It was a step in the right direction, he couldn't expect anyone else to save him from himself. Ethan wasn't gonna come sweeping in to save the day either so he'd need to take things seriously. He was devasted but he pushed that down and refused to wallow in it anymore. Going on back to the office he made his rounds to see what was going on in the world according to their analysts. -

Sam - Since getting his life turned around from escaping his world with all the zombies and now settling his life here in Austin with clone family in this world. Now he just needs to get himself set up with a job in his Clone brother and father in Colt and John Winchester. This world was quite different from his world. This world had light and shade and not the constant running and living for our lives. When my life here was found and managed to get along with everybody and the family here seem to be all happy. According to Colt, there was a rift of multiple worlds giving a window to another world to come here and giving all the other clone to survive in this world if they find a way to there rifts. This gave me hope that I might one day find my true brother in @DemonhunterDW someday. When we were separated in the last fight with zombies. He hopes his brother managed to get out before his world exploded as he heard by Colt that Chuck was cancelling worlds that couldn't contain the demons and now. He sighs and hopes his Dean Got out before his world just vanished with everyone loved and cared about was now dead.

John had decided to send a text to the boys to have a get together at the headquarters building so that Sam and he could meet one another. They'd lost one Sam and gained another in a short amount of time. John couldn't fathom what the big guy upstairs was doing but they had to make a plan to get everyone on the same page. So as he sat with a hot cup of coffee waiting for the boys to show up he read through the mornings briefing. Specifically about the rifts showing up here and there, depositing at this point Winchesters but he had his suspensions more was going on that they didn't understand.-

Adam had been quiet for a few days. he hadn't had any control over his body for the last few days, to be honest. Michael has put him in his trance. as the last few days were kind of a blur. as he never knew what going on with his so-called family. he logged onto his laptop to track on his family to see where in this miserable world where exactly they would be. living their perfect lives. he could see his elder brother has gone up in the world living in Texas Austin. when he google him to see what's going on with the three Winchester his father didn't even care about him. it was always about him and dean and Sam from the minute I meet him as a child. Adam knew if he could track his elder brother Sam and his father wouldn't be too far behind him. so he made a plan to head to Austin Texas the following day. he was booked into this crappy motel for one more night.

Colt got a message from his father about meeting up with him and Sammy. Looking at his watch, he had somethings to do but he texted back he'd be there but late. A local haunting had caught his attention when the guys mentioned it. Normally he didn't roll on things like this anymore, honestly didn't get the adrenaline pumping and he lived off of that. Since booze and sex had been quelled adrenaline was pretty much all he had to get through the days. Of course now with Asher in his life and again was a good thing for him and the kids. He worried about them, he knew he hasn't graded A father material but he made efforts to become more of what they'd need. Adapt and survive that was what he did.

Lost in thought till Justin reached over and slapped the back of his hand against his arm. "We're here Colt." Looking up at the old abandoned mental institution with a laugh. "Hope you did your homework Justin, hell, a place like this could have multiple spirits haunting it. What did the construction workers say exactly about this place?" Listening to Justin describes a young teenage girl bloody and bruised up dragging a bloody axe down the corridor. And that the lead foremen clutched his chest and dropped right there on the floor. they described the young woman as he flickered like an old movie projection glitching something out of a horror movie. One of the guys had grabbed the guy by the wrist and trying to get him into the elevator but the girl snarled at them punching her small hand into the foreman's chest like he was squeezing his heart literally. They guys ran for it and managed to get out of there, but they said when they looked up at the window she was standing there dead and pale staring at them. Fire, EMS and cops rolled and they searched the place best they could but couldn't find any trace of the young woman. EMS starting CPR right away but the foreman was DOD (dead on arrival) at the hospital.

Rumor's had gotten out and apparently, no one wanted to take a stab at the renovations. So the recent owner called in a Catholic Priest, Father Gentry. He went in and never came out. Fire and cops searched what they could again but they didn't find him. Colt grabbed his duffle and shotgun. There was a chance the priest could still be alive so he slung the bag over his shoulder and went in, Justin guiding with top of the line GPS and map configuration of the building plans but as soon as they crossed the threshold the equipment began to falter. Colt didn't need EMF to tell him they had a very real problem here but one of the guys held one holding it up. It's was going off like crazy. "Okay stick together, this place has been searched twice but we're looking for anything out of the ordinary. Be suspicious of everything. These places used to do underground work trying to find ways to fix people and who knows what kind of evil went down here. It Gotta be a place big enough to hold a grown man but if he's already dead it may be smaller. Check for hidden rooms, panels in the floors or ceilings etc. Break into teams of two. Work back to back if anything goes down and make damn sure to use your training. Everyone's going home tonight and hopefully the priest as well."

Sam: It's been a few days with now having my apartment and new Papers with new I.D in this world after being set up by Colt. Next on my agency was to spread my legs out and get set up in this new world and just blend in. Maybe get to own the people of this world. Maybe in time, I might be able to start working for black waters and through some cases under my belt. Right now all I was doing is studying about this world as I wouldn't want this world to fall like my own. The people here under John and Colt Winchester were protected, but for how long.

Sam was sitting in the local library having a cup of coffee. Reading up on any cases that maybe be in the area as he wasn't exactly working at blackwaters but liked to read and see what was happening in this world and maybe looking out for clues of any of his people may be found there way here. When he felt the vibration from his phone sliding across the table. He looked at his phone and there was a message from this world John's Winchester requested him and some of his siblings to come and have a meeting with him at his office. He nodded his head as he read the message from John, he was curious to wonder how many cloned Winchester were here. When he wrote up a quick reply to John. 📱 Sure thing John, I can be there in about thirty minutes or so. 📱 Sam picked up his phone stuff in his shirt pocket, picking up the books and returned them to the shelves.

John checked his phone and laughed, might be different worlds but typical responses from both. He laid the phone down and went down the hall and into the Operations Command Room. Monitors up all over the places and people monitoring each hunt from their station. He talking to Gilbert to get an update of what was going on. John sipped his coffee as they rattled off several vampire cases, hauntings and a possible ghoul problem. They talked a little and he was about to walk out when one status came back "We've lost coms with Team 8." John walked over and watched them try to figure out any possible problems. "What's the case they are working and where are they?" The analyst looked up. "It's a haunting sir, one confirmed dead and one missing. John looked at the computer screen to see if he recognized any of the operators on the case. He recognized /Justin Hartgrove/ and then the next name /Colt Winchester/. He frowned and shook his head no wonder the kid said he was going to be late.- "How long have coms been down?" The analyst answered "Twenty minutes sir." John took a breath. "Keep me posted on the situation and send me the case file to my office." With that, he turned around and walked out. Colt was a top tier operator but that didn't matter, every time these guys went out in the field he worried. Not just for his son but all of them.-

Adam In the next morning Adam couldn't wait to check out of this motel. He liked to have his morning coffee outside watching the world go by. This might be normal to others around the enclosed motel with the busy parking lot. He stood watching the people coming and going in their lives. When they were doing the hustle and bustle. He had been locked up in the cage for hundred of years with Lucifer and Michael. When somehow Lucifer managed to escape with some ease. Whereas Michael and himself took a lot longer. Now they were finally Free he had Michael for the company on his body and mind. This one thing that was on Adam mind was a showdown with his family. Since they never looked for him. They simply just forgot about him. It's so true out of mind out of sight. Both Michael and himself had issues that needed to be settled. Michael was helpful since he would often help Adam to track his so-called family with a location. He knew that the Winchester had moved on from Kansas now they have a headquarters n Austin Texas. This Is where he was going to be heading too. Michael had offered to get him there in seconds but Adam wanted the surprise on his side. When he had chose to make the three days drive down to Texas. But he may change his mind in due course. Adam finished his coffee-making his way back inside his room. Putting his coffee cup on the sink. When he turns to pick up his bag. Leaving this motel room, to head towards the reception area to check out. He stepped in placing the key card in the drop off box. saying ”Cheers” to the receptionist. Making his way outside. Walking to his truck. Unlocking the trunk throwing his bag in. Making his way into the driver seat. To begin the drive down to Texas.

Colt The top floors had been searched first and they'd found nothing now the team descended the stairs to what they believed to be the basement containing the bowler room etc. Dank and dark the basement was pretty damn big with rooms in itself. This was making Colt wished he'd called for a backup team but them again more men, meant higher possibilities of casualties. Signaling they split up, weapon at the ready he went point and led his guys down the east hallway looking for anything that stood out. Lights flickered overhead which could be a sign but could also show the date and faulty wiring of the place. Moving on coming up on a thick door to his right, Justin moved to the left and Colt turned the knob pushing it open. Quick scope of the room then pulling back, having not seen anything he moves around the frame and disappears into the darkness, Justing reaching for where normally a light switch might be flipping it on. Fluorescent lights overhead flickered and Colt moved further into the room checking it. Papers were strewn across the floor. He thought he saw what could be fresh blood on the floor and disappeared behind an old bookcase. Cast in the darkness he thought he saw something in the distance. On the other side of the basement, the rest of the team was mirroring his actions with nothing in sight yet.-

Sam walked out of the library with the sun splitting the sky. A pair of sunglasses would become in handy when he popped into a nearby store to pick up and pair of sunglasses to be able to see, with Texas been so sunny. Paying for the glasses and a packet of gum and a bottle of water. Sam continue with his travels as he was going to walk to the headquarters of Blackwater to meet with John and any other siblings. Arriving at the pretty impressive building and clearing the securities by giving his name he was escorted up to John Winchester office. Even this John Winchester had a duplicate clone which made Sam feel a little unease with not one John Winchester but two in this world. He had met either of them yet but were they just like his own father John. Sam and his own father were never on the best of the team with Dean always stuck in the middle. Now I was in a world I was learning about and with two John Winchesters and I don't have my own brother anywhere to be seen. How was this meeting going to go? He was a little concerned about the whole thing. When he knocked on John office and waited for a reply before opening the door. When John was sitting at his desk with piles of files. Through working them. "Erm John? It's San Winchester you sent me a text to come here"

John looked up from over the frame of his glasses at the young man coming through the door. The circumstances could not have been weirder but the love he felt for his boys had his heartwarming at the sight of Sam, even if he wasn't technically his son. Standing he pulled his glasses off and laid them on the desk and walked around to meet Sam, offering his hand.- Welcome to family Sam. I'm hoping we can put your mind to ease and help you any way we can. Would you like something to drink?

Adam was taking his time his drive down to Texas to go and see his family. Driving along the interstate. Sometimes the roads were busy and quiet. The road that was black in the day time just melted into the darkness of the night. When a car passed its headlights were reflected in the water that lay over the surface. There were street-lamps but they looked like they all had been sabotaged for their solar triggers. They rig things up with dirt over the sensor and then after some rain whatever they have rigged up explodes. roads are dark and the days are anxious, who knows what days would bring and what would strike would be next. The quietness of the traffic goes on his travel to Texas. He was getting tired from all the miles he was putting down. When he stopped off at a local gas station. When he needed to fill his truck up with some gas to make the rest of the journey. Stepping out of his truck. Cracking his neck from side to side. ” wow that's felt good” asking the attending to fill her right with up.

Throwing his keys to the attend. Making his way inside the station to pay for the gas. Taking a Break from the drive when he orders a coffee and bagel. He sits at the window. Nursing his coffee when his mind wandered to the recurring flashback that saved him from the torture of when he was in the pit. His dream as of the day when him Dean Sam and Father would have a day out with no stress. They dreamed of the day when all the guys. They were all on a fishing boat on the lake doing some fishing. Even when he had never gone fishing before, trying to catch some fish from a bbq when we're intending to have that day when the sun when down. Having a real family day together with no worries and having some beers. Telling jokes and have some beers. He laughed when he could see the day ended end too well with himself falling in the lake trying to catch the bloody fish. But this was only a dream and he doubts this day would ever happen. With his family, all moved on with their lives in their own ways. Adam shaking his head to come back to this reality knowing he needed to get back on the road to get down to Austin. Where his father and Sam was. Taking his coffee and bagel with him. Leaving the gas station to walk over to his truck. Stepping in and buckling up his belt to set himself on his way. He wondered where his brother was. Michael sensed he wasn't with his father and Sam.

Colt: Moving forward he knew if this was a spirit they already knew they were here and where but if the priest was down here somewhere he wouldn't so Colt spoke loudly.- “Father?! You down here! If you can help me somehow let me know where you are it would help! We're gonna get you out of here!! -As he moved further into the darkened area books began to fly at his head from around the room, concentration on avoidance of being knocked out he didn't see the teenage ghost until she'd rammed her hand into his chest squeezing his heart. Gun had dropped from his fingers as he gasped, face straining of the lack of blood flow. Seconds later Justin fired a salt round causing the ghost to disappear, Colt grabbed his own chest trying to recover, his other teammate handed him back his shotgun. “You okay boss? Looking peakish.” Colt laughed despite how bad his chest hurt and took the gun. “Spread out, look around. He's gotta be here somewhere.” They looked for a lightswitch, finding one but it didn't work. Cracking glow sticks they tossed out several. Looking things over Justin spotted some ectoplasm near what looked like another bookcase. Colt came closer and listened looking at the bookcase over running fingers under the shelves when he felt a cold rush of air go past him and behind the bookcase. “I think there's a passage back here.” Check the books as they did Justin pulled one and the lock clicked, the bookcase swung open. “Good job man, let's see if we can't find a priest and send Casper home.” Colt tossed several glow sticks out into the darkness ahead and the three hunters worked their way down a narrow hallway.-

Sam took a seat in front of John when he glanced around looking at John office. Many thoughts popped into his head over how many time he was put in front of his father like this before. When it was like deja vu playing in his head when he snapped out of it. Shaking John’s hand, when he gives a little nod to John .* erm Sure. Michael was monitoring where Colt was. He had run off to be the goodie to shoe guy away running off trying to save someone else other than his brother. In that instant Adam was pissed. One doctor had been suspected of her disappearance but they couldn't prove it. Blackwater had sent someone out to go talk to him and being in his nineties he'd caved to killing her and burying her in the back of the asylum. Colt joined the part of the team to dig and pulled the rest out for safety. She was going to be mad as hell when they salted and burnt her bones.-

To get you started on your next stage of digital adoption we explain below our favourite seven digital tools that we rely on to connect with our team, customers and suppliers wherever they are and to improve processes in our business.

1. Safe Password Management

How many logins and passwords do you have? How much time do you spend each week resetting passwords because you can’t recall them? If you write your passwords down in a little book or a piece of paper, stop doing that now! You are making it too easy for this vital information to be lost or stolen.

There are legal firms now offering secure storage of documents with all of your important account, insurance, passport, logons, password details, so that should something happen to you, your accounts can be accessed and all of this other “life admin” information is easy to retrieve. But you don’t need to pay a solicitor to do this for you and these details change periodically so you have to be able to easily update them.

There are app-based tools, with heavy security encryption in them, where you can store all of these details. Our favourite is 1Password. When I started using 1Password on my phone and laptop (where I now have over 200 logins and other valuable records), I calculated I’m saving at least 30 minutes per week in password retrieval and resetting and my passwords are much stronger.

2. File Storage and Back-ups

We use Dropbox as our primary data storage platform and to ensure we use it efficiently we’ve implemented an organised, logical folder structure, some folders are shared with the team, some are just for the directors. We synchronise most folders to our computers and some folders, e.g. those holding large video files, we don’t synchronise so as not to cause all that data to be downloading to every team member’s computers unnecessarily.

With all of these files in Dropbox, it’s very easy to share files with clients and saves large email attachments. Because Dropbox is on the cloud and we’re synchronising to our computers we can always access documents offline and online and negating the need for daily back-ups.

We operate separate single user accounts, typically with 1 Terabyte of data for each member of the team (costs around $120 (AUD) per annum per person) to store all of our documents and other data files.

Of course, it is advisable to separately backup very sensitive and valuable data that your business relies on and you might choose to back this up to an external hard drive that you keep with you or store away from your office in a safe location.

3. Team Communication and Reducing Emails

Are you getting flooded with emails and is managing emails is taking up too much of your time? Are you sending emails back and forth between team members? There is a better way to manage intra-team communications about all sorts of topics and specific projects. We use the app Slack.

Has the internet become so ingrained that programmers don’t know a way to program around it?

Microsoft is not the only bad guy, because of this increasing dependency on internet resources, many software is no longer available as a stand-alone program. Instead, we are seeing a migration to a software-as-a-service (aka ”saas”) product model, instead of an actual decent stand-alone software product. Software companies figure they can release software on schedule and shake-out the bugs later through updates. But requiring an always connected system cuts a great deal of rural America out of the picture. Unless you live in a very large town or along the interstate, you may not even have real viable internet access options.

Quite honestly, the Professional version of Windows 10 still feels like it is in alpha (a trial that isn’t even public until the first Beta release). It functions like an OS, yes, but there is absolutely NOTHING professional about it.

As a business owner I know I can’t rely on it. I am distracted by advertising. I can’t afford to have an operating system shut down a project in progress without advance warning, EVER. That is absolutely sinful. It isn’t just Photoshop that will lose its settings, cashe, last loaded projects and undo’s, the whole Adobe line of products do, and this is what I rely on.

I can jump over to the Mac, yes, but the last time I was using Apple products I bought a brand new PPC system and it was obscolete in a year. Apple is going to be putting all their new computers on their own processor architecture next year, so again, I would have no upgrade path.

I might say that I am extremely pleased with the debian linux operating system and how professional it acts, except there are no Adobe software options for that platform. It is an extremely professional operating system, but has no professional creativity applications with an easy to use GUI. Plus, the Adobe UX is second to none (especially with its extensive shortcut keys library).

Nevertheless, I do have some older PCs that I will experimenting with using alternate Windows platforms. I mean, the Windows 10 Professional is actually completely unprofessional, absolutely unreliable, and cannot be used as a productive business software platform without suffering, misery and lost time.

Hockey can be a subjective game, the most of the major North American professional team sports. You thought so-and-so played a pretty decent game. Your buddy didn’t. There are only so many numbers to break the tie. Given it’s not a start-and-stop game, plus the speed inherent to hockey, some things can be tough to quantify.

Here’s one thing, however, that’s not subjective, especially when you’re around the Pittsburgh Penguins every day: Bob Grove, who’s unofficially considered the team’s historian, is nothing short of brilliant.

And also just a really, really nice person.

I’ve known Grove for years, since I worked where he once did, at the Washington Observer-Reporter. We chatted plenty when I was on the Penguins beat, too, and I’ve always been fascinated by how Grove does what he does. So, on Monday, I sort of invited myself into his Canonsburg home to check it out.

Picked a heck of a game, too, as we watched the Penguins dig themselves a pretty big hole in Boston — more on this shortly — rally, then lose a heartbreaker at the end.

2. “People have ways of scraping data,” Grove said as he sat at an upstairs computer, beginning the process of explaining to me how he’s able to look up some of the most nuanced facts about the Penguins in mere minutes. “I don’t have any idea how to do that.”

Scraping data is essentially taking the official game data from the NHL — say shots on goal or time on ice — and writing a computer program to where it will automatically update. It’s how sites such as naturalstattrick.com or the former war-on-ice.com pull info.

Grove does none of that. He has somewhere around 80 or 100 Excel files on his desktop computer (that syncs with his work laptop), 35 or 40 of them spreadsheets that he manually updates after every game.

“Anybody could do this,” Grove insisted to me. “It’s all available on NHL.com.”

With all due respect, Grover, you’re wrong here. I’m pretty sure there are very few people on the planet who can do what you do, which is what makes this all so neat to me.

3. The amount of data Grove has accumulated is incredible.

His most often used spreadsheet has data logged from all 4,062 games throughout Penguins history. An abbreviated list of what’s tracked includes attendance; whether it’s a division or conference game; whether it’s a part of a home-and-home series; the game time; shots on goal; power-play opportunities for both teams; who scored the first goal and in overtime, if necessary; goalie information; short-handed goals; who was coaching the Penguins; the officials; whether they were winning or losing after two periods.

Did I mention that Grove enters this stuff manually after every game?

Two summers ago Grove got an itch. Like many of his research ideas, it started with something that he wanted to know. So he broke down each game even further, logging how many goals and shots the Penguins had per period for each game in their history.

This came in handy after the second period Monday, as Grove rushed upstairs to see how 21 shots and four goals fared throughout Penguins history. It took him less than 4 minutes.

Tonight marks just the fourth time Pens have scored 4 goals in one period @ Boston. Last time was Feb. 8, 2003, when they also got 4 in the second period.

“I guess you just have to have a natural curiosity about stuff,” Grove said.

Ugh, yeah. Something like that.

4. The Penguins are currently in an 0-for-21 power-play funk. That, too, has had Grove’s wheels spinning. So this past weekend, instead of enjoying some gorgeous weather, he sifted through his own game logs, looking for games with extended strings of zeros, then counting up the missed chances inside each group.

“It took me a few hours just to go back 20 years,” Grove said.

Eventually he settled on this:

So far, the longest PP drought I've seen for Pens (not done looking) is 42 straight from Dec. 3-23, 1967. Since the turn of the century, longest was 33 straight, from Dec. 23 to Jan. 6 in the 08-09 season.

5. Grove has another spreadsheet with player info: Everybody who has ever played for the team, complete with their date of birth, where they were born, how the Penguins acquired them, where they played college or junior hockey, what they did in their first/last games with the club, etc.

“If someone says, ‘Who from Oshawa has played for the Penguins?’ I can just sort it,” Grove said.

There are also files including the Penguins’ trade history, how other goalies have fared against them, power-play information, all of them updated after each game. Ditto for probably 20 or so files specifically dedicated to Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Jake Guentzel and Matt Murray. On the shootout spreadsheet that Grove keeps, he invented a stat called Game on Stick, where he tracks whether the shooter had a chance to win the game right then and there.

While updating, Grove will notice trends, those thoughts producing the next day’s notes.

“I always thought it would be so much easier if this information flowed in here,” Grove said, alluding to the scraping of data. “It would be a lot less time consuming, but I wouldn’t notice the things I notice by putting them in by hand. That’s the good thing about it. I’ve got it down to kind of a science the way I do it after the game.”

6. To better understand Grove, and why he does what he does, I suppose we should probably back up a little bit.

The Sarver native attended his first Penguins game on Dec. 26, 1970, a 4-2 Penguins victory over the Boston Bruins at Civic Arena. On the other team, of course, was Bobby Orr.

Grove, who was 11 at the time, had been a hockey fan before that, but this was sort of the point of no return. He was enraptured.

“You think you have an interest in this game, you go watch it live, and your life is never the same afterward,” Grove said. “At least that’s the way it’s been for me.”

7. Grove went to Penn State and interviewed for a job at the Observer-Reporter in 1981, where he would work until 1998 before getting out of the newspaper business and ascending to his current role: vice president of public relations for Comcast’s Keystone Region.

During his time at the O-R, Grove — like all of us who worked there — did a variety of things, though his most notable work came covering the Penguins.

But Grove, unlike writers for the bigger Pittsburgh papers, did not travel for road games in the regular season, only during the playoffs. The 60-year-old began charting stats and trends by hand as a way to find stuff to write when the team was on the road.

“I would look at this stuff, and it would give me some notes for a notebook,” Grove said.

8. Grove actually used to call a fax number given out by the NHL, where you could request game sheets from specific teams.

Those helped, though the ink eventually smeared. Former Penguins PR man Steve Bonino once came up big when he handed Grove copies of every game sheet ever. Grove keeps the hard copies, scanned into his computer.

“He said, ‘We have all the game summaries since 1967. Do you want a copy?’ ” Grove recalled. “I said, ‘Think about what you just asked me.’ ”

(Grove and I had a separate, lengthy discussion about how different journalism is today, but we’ll save that for another time. I did tell Grove I’m jealous of those who covered sports 20 or 30 years ago and were actually able to watch what they were writing about.)

9. Grove didn’t play a ton of ice hockey growing up. He could skate, sure, and he and his friends routinely played street hockey, but hockey just wasn’t as much of a thing back then.

Recently, though, Grove’s neighbor and his son, Brent, have gotten him into playing pickup games.

“I’m definitely not the best one out there,” Bob said. “But I love it.”

10. What Grove does scratches an important itch for him.

In August 2015, the Penguins decided to change up their pre- and postgame shows on the radio side, which effectively removed Grove from the role he held for the previous 10 years.

Coming off a lackluster season, the Penguins wanted someone full-time in that role, and Grove couldn’t be around the team as much as the job would require. The position eventually went to Josh Getzoff, another friend and a talented broadcaster who’s incredibly deserving.

“For me it’s simply a way to stay close to a game that I love and stay close to the team,” Grove said.

11. I also give Grove a lot of credit for this next one: I think it would be easy for someone in his position to be upset over how things went down.

Sure, Getzoff is beyond capable. It’s not about that. Grove’s voice, to me, is synonymous with the club’s history, the same way you think of Mike Lange or Paul Steigerwald. You don’t hear any of the three and think anything other than Penguins hockey.

Grove is a trove of information, and he’s just a really smart hockey guy. He was also all class in how he addressed my next question on whether he misses broadcasting and if it was hard to remain a fan given how things went down.

“I don’t have any hard feelings,” Grove said. “It hit me hard. I really do miss it a lot. But the team, look, they had reasons for doing it.

“I have no complaints by the way I was treated by the Penguins. Are you kidding me? They gave me an opportunity to write a book about the team, which was a thrill. Gave me a chance to do 10 years of the radio show. I never had more fun than I did doing that.

“It gave me a chance to be on the broadcast team with Mike Lange and Phil Bourque. I was listening to Mike when I was a teenager, so you can imagine what a thrill that was for me to work on the same broadcast team as Mike Lange. They gave me a chance to ride with those guys during the Stanley Cup parade in ’09.

“I got treated tremendously by the Penguins. They made a decision. That’s how it goes. At the end of the day, I gave that job everything I had and more. That’s really all you can ask of yourself.”

12. Now, Grove said he spends around two or three hours a day researching various Penguins-related items, in addition to his Comcast work. He also writes columns and makes regular appearances on 93.7 the Fan.

Grove is active on Twitter, and it’s not uncommon for fans to pose random questions to him involving Penguins history.

“I enjoy interacting with the fans,” Grove said. “I really enjoy that. I can’t answer them all. But there’s few times people get back to me and ask me a question that I can look up and I enjoy sharing that with them.”

13. If you follow Grove on Twitter, he’ll tweet out a flurry of info before games. When I was on the beat, I would sit in the press box, crank up some Grateful Dead or Jason Isbell and type those notes into a separate file for easy reference once the game started.

Grove told me he actually schedules the tweets the night before.

“Because I couldn’t be at practice, it was how I got ready for the broadcasts,” Grove said of his pregame notes. “That gave me stuff to lean on in the pregame and postgame and between periods. I just started to take some of those notes that I had prepped and tweeted them out. Then it grew from there.”

14. Couple more random Grove tidbits before I move on …

Around five or six years ago, Grove took on one of his biggest research projects: Gordie Howe hat tricks. This is not an official NHL stat — it’s when a player has a fight, a goal and an assist in the same game — so Grove had to figure it on his own.

He started by weeding out games where the Penguins were shut out or scored one goal. Then he’d look for fights. If someone fought, he’d look to see if that player scored a goal, then if he had an assist.

“You have to lay eyes on the game summary of every game they’ve ever played,” Grove said. “It took months, but I just got this bug and said, ‘I’m going to get this list.’ ”

15. Grove, like many in the local media, is a big English Premier League soccer fan. Specifically he’s a Manchester City supporter after he became hooked on the final day of the 2012 season when City scored twice in extra time to claim their first league title since 1968.

“I was the guy rooting for the Cubs and Red Sox to win the World Series,” Grove said. “I love teams that haven’t won in forever finally finding a way.

“[Manchester City winning] struck me. I said, ‘This is my team.’ I could identify with how long they had suffered until they won.”

Now, Grove listens to multiple soccer podcasts every week. The sport has become a close second to hockey for him.

“It’s so different than North American sports,” Grove said. “I think that’s what I like about it.”

16. We also spent time talking about the current Penguins beat, how competitive it is and how much good work is being done there.

(It’s true. It’s probably the most competitive beat in the city.)

“There’s never been more coverage of the Penguins than there is now,” Grove said. “And there’s some really, really good writing going on about the Penguins. I never remember seeing the kind of coverage that is put forth these days.”

Couldn’t agree more with that. Some very talented people over there, and I’m especially proud of the work our guys, Matt Vensel and Mike DeFabo, have done recently.

17. Moving on …

I’d really like to start seeing more out of Alex Galchenyuk. I think it’s in there, but if you’re going to play with Evgeni Malkin — where he probably fits the best — the Penguins absolutely need more finish out of him.

Saw it last night again. I get that he’s had a tough start with health, but now, with Patric Hornqvist out, it’s time to get going.

18. Brian Dumoulin doesn’t get nearly enough credit.

So steady, so quiet. His game isn’t sexy, and it doesn’t need to be. He’s the perfect running mate for Kris Letang.

“He doesn’t get his due, does he?” Grove said at one point during our discussion.

No, he most certainly does not.

19. Why not try Jared McCann up with Crosby and Guentzel?

I was definitely in the camp of letting Dominik Simon work it out. We’ve been there, we’ve seen it, and it’s .... well, not exactly perfect.

The Penguins could also be getting more out of McCann than they have thus far, at least in terms of him consistently having an impact on games.

Would love to see coach Mike Sullivan revisit that trio later in the week, although I’m not terribly confident we’re going to see it.

20. I like the way the Penguins are playing right now.

I realize they’ve lost five of seven, four of those coming in regulation, but I don’t care. Grove and I agreed: There’s something different about the Penguins right now, something more repeatable, a tenacious style that will matter once they get their power play going and (finally) get healthy.

This isn’t the sloppy, lackadaisical brand of hockey that had the Penguins languishing through the first couple months each of the past couple seasons.

I have a question about car insurance. I was recently shopping around for quotes for car insurance. I had gotten an email about Washington Mutual Car Insurance, so I decided to get a quote. I was astounded when they quoted me with $2500 every 6 months or $5,000 a year. I was just completely blown away. My car, a 2004 Nissan Sentra, is barely even worth that much. I called them up and asked why they were quoting me that rate and they said it was because of my age and credit score. I am only 23 and I have really bad credit, but there is NO OTHER insurance company that quoted me a rate anything near as high as that. Progressive quoted me $600 every 6 months or $1200 a year. Geico $613 every 6 months or $1200 a year. Allstate was $1,200 every 6 months or $2,400 a year. And State Farm was $800 every 6 months, $1600 a year. These quotes were all for identical insurance policies. I have never been in an accident, never been arrested, never been given a ticket for ANYTHING. Does age and credit score make that much of a difference? That is insane, no one in their right mind would pay the full value of their car every year in insurance fees. What do you think?""

Using Storybook with Nuxt

Nuxt.js has been a lot of fun to use in production web apps and side projects. It’s simple, fast, and seems very in line with web standards when it comes to creating components, importing plugins, etc. Equally as exciting has been the rise of Storybook. It’s gained quite a following in the last year for it’s ease of use in creating component/pattern libraries and in it’s ability to do component based snapshot testing in isolation.

Recently I was wanting to start a new side project and wanted to use Storybook with Nuxt. I was excited to see their documentation on using Storybook with Vue (though React, React Native, and Angular are also supported) but as I was getting started found some bumps in the road. After pulling an all nighter and a few pull requests, I got everything working! This is a repo of the final product and this the story of my journey that night.

Background

For those unfamiliar with Storybook (as I was a last week) or Nuxt I’d like to share a bit about them. Nuxt is an objectively great framework for build applications. It’s community driven, easy to learn, and plays well with existing projects that use Node.js. There’s a lot of great projects out there using Nuxt and a few key developers that I’d suggest following for more info would be Sarah Drasner, Evan You, and Rachel Nabors. Storybook has quickly grown in the last year to become an essential part of many teams testing suite and a great way of keeping track of component UI. The main premise is that after creating a component you create it’s “story”. The story will contain different states of a component which provides a visual representation. When you write multiple stories you have your Storybook.

Installing and Setting Up

This was starightforward. I use vue-cli to create a new Nuxt project (specifically the Express flavor) and then used Storybook’s documentation on installing their package with Vue. In their documentation they show an example of a config file for Storybook. It discussed using Vuex as a plugin but that’s not required to get things going. If you wanna start without the plugins for now you can check out the config file in the repo of my journey.

Storybook has built in “add-ons” that add a lot of value to the package. I was interested in getting the Action and Storyshot addons working. Actions allow Storybook to display data from event handlers in a panel. It’s especially useful when you’re wanting to see what data is passed when a button in clicked or some other type of event is triggered through interaction with the UI. Storyshots create a snapshot of the component in isolation so that as updates are made you can run a comparison test on components to ensure that there aren’t unexpected changes to it’s UI. If I’m honest, snapshot testing was a new term for me a week ago, but it’s really proven to be useful. Under the hood Storyshots is using Jest to do it’s testing. We’ll get to my misadventure with Storyshots and Jest in a bit. If you’re interested you can find a full list of add-ons, both native and community created, on their website.

Actions

The only part that I struggled with in setting up this addon was getting the package to run properly when I launched npm run storybook. This command is what starts the localhost server for Storybook’s UI. Initally in doing this I ended up seeing a stories but no action panel, despite install storybook/addon-actions through NPM. Turns out I was missing an addons.js file from the .storybook directory. That file should look like this to import the add-ons you want to use within the Storybook UI:

After adding that file the panel appeared but I still wasn’t seeing actions appear when I clicked the button in the Button/template + methods story. I figured out through trial and error that changing @click in the button template to :handle-click would give the result I expected. I’m guessing that’s because we are testing the component in isolation so the action panel is looking at changes in data and listening to event handlers inside that specific component. I’ve not confirmed this yet with the community, but I believe it make sense.

Storyshots: Round 1

This is where our journey turns rocky. To install the right packages I had to go a bit outside of what is provided in the docs. Here’s the full command to use for all the correct packages: npm install --save-dev @storybook/addon-storyshots jest react-test-renderer jest-vue-preprocessor. I’m still unsure why react-test-renderer is needed. I believe it’s a bug but I’m still confirming that. At this point there were some errors and I submitted a couple of issues. While I waited for those answers, instead of going to sleep like a sane person, I decided to mess around with Jest a bit to do some end-to-end testing.

Down the Rabbit Hole We Go

I hadn’t used Jest before and wanted to dig in a bit under the hood to see how it worked. I started by creating a test/unit directory to hold the specs directory and some config files. Searching around I found a repo by Brant Willis on GitHub that really helped resolve what the jest.config.js file should look like when working with Nuxt. Turns out this file would also be used by Storyshots later. (So maybe this wasn’t a completely off topic decision!)

After sorting out the config I was able to get passing tests! I didn’t do anything insane for the tests. There’s plenty of tutorials online for creating tests with Jest. I created a simple test for each component, the default layout in Nuxt, and each page in Nuxt. When I tried running the test on Footer.vue I did receive an error. It ended up being due to Footer.vue not having a script area in the file.

Storyshots: Round 2

After figuring out Jest I still didn’t have an answer to the submitted issues. In classic 3am logic, I decided to go searching again and I came across a buried file in the Storybook official repo. This is the file needed to tell storyshots where to find the config file, what framework to use with Storybook, and some other peripheral options. I configured it for Vue but I was still running into errors. It was saying that storybook/react wasn’t find, even though I set Vue as the framework. After using npm install --save-dev storybook/react all was well. (Yes, very odd.) When trying to run npm test it provided me with an unexpected token error. Something that wasn’t documented well was the need to have a .babelrc file. Turns out it wasn’t transpiling the code with Babel before running the tests. I ended up with this .babelrc file after seeing this issue in the jest-vue-preprocessor package.

The next half hour from here was a blur. When I snapped out of it I had really messed up the repo and decided to rollback to a commit that I knew was working. Also my wife woke up and told me I was typing too loud and to move to my office. #truLove (Who thought this was a good idea?)

After some caffine I realized that I had added a webpack.config.js file in .storybook that was overriding a lot of settings in the Nuxt config file. I put humpty dumpty back together again and knew I was getting close. After running npm test and trying a few different things I still got an error saying storyshots is intended only to be used with storybook. Turns out Storyshots is available starting in Storybook 3.4.0-alpha.5. To update to that version I had to set the version for storybook-vue, storybook/addon-action, and storybook/addon-storyshots. I also figured out that @storybook/addon is required to get addons working. It appears it’s a newer way of getting add-ons to work in an upcoming update.

Thanks to the community at Storybook I found out that there was a workaround to the this bug by adding the following to jest.conf.js

transformIgnorePatterns: [ '/node_modules/(?!(@storybook/.*\\.vue$))', ],

And TA-DA!!! It works!

As the Sun Began to Rise…

I was really excited to see it working. Turns out my Jest tests were creating snapshots for my specs and Storyshots was creating snapshots of the stories. It also comes with coversage stats which was a nice easter egg. Though I’m not sure why I only get 50% coverage on my Button.vue file. (Anyone know why? Leave a comment!) Along the way I found a great resource for Jest specs with Vue. I’m excited to dig in more with the specs and play around with a few more add-ons for Storybook.

Feeling invincible and extremely worn out, I decided to close the laptop and lay down for some rest. And that’s when I heard it…the cry of my 2 year old daughter, the whine of a grouchy 4 year old little boy, and the loud barking of a puppy needing to go outside. Seriously…whose idea was this?!

Using Storybook with Nuxt

Background

For those unfamilar with Storybook (as I was a last week) or Nuxt I’d like to share a bit about them. Nuxt is an objectively great framework for build applications. It’s community driven, easy to learn, and plays well with existing projects that use Node.js. There’s a lot of great projects out there using Nuxt and a few key developers that I’d suggest following for more info would be Sarah Drasner, Evan You, and Rachel Nabors. Storybook has quickly grown in the last year to become an essential part of many teams testing suite and a great way of keeping track of component UI. The main premise is that after creating a component you create it’s “story”. The story will contain different states of a component which provides a visual representation. When you write multiple stories you have your Storybook.
